Seems like any rom I use (currently on cm7.2 rc1 mirage) and every one of them are terrible when I have to touch something on the edge. Like dolphin HD browser. It always takes 4 or more tries to hit the refresh button. Using speedial or desktop toggle from the slide out addons pane is just as bad.

Did you try running Nook Screen Recalibrate?
Wasn't aware that existed. I can't say I notice any difference. The refresh button in dolphin is like roulette. Was the program supposed to do anything besides flash a blank screen for a bit then reset? I thought it was gonna be a touch here and there to calibrate thing.

What you saw was it. No "touch here" buttons. It helps but sensitivity at the edges will still likely be not quite as good as elsewhere on the screen. Better but not perfect.
The Nook Color's digitizer hardware and/or firmware is simply not as good as what's on other phones and tablets

That's it. It's pretty simple. You might also try a higher dpi setting. I found the NOOK app frustrating on CM using defaults -- I couldn't click the settings button -- but with a higher dpi (I like 220), it works fine. Everything's bigger, which I prefer anyhow.
There are a lot of programs to set dpi, but I use "LCD Resolution".
Myself and many other NC owners have found that using a screen protector helps with the sensitivity of the screen. I won't say it's perfect but it is a lot better than without one.

The irony is that the single worst example for this problem is the Android Nook app. It almost guarantees to drive you to the Amazon book store. I suspect B&N think they are "punishing" us for rooting, but it's only they who suffer. You listening B&N? Fix the top right buttons on your app under CM7 please. I want to use your store but it is just too painful.

i know hurts my eyes looking at it. supposed to give excellent battery life though.
no it does not, i ran a test (its in the general section) because of the "render" it slows your phone down considerably and wastes cpu cycles ergo negating any battery life you would have saved (if you had an oled screen), but since we have an lcd screen EVERY pixel is lit up regardless if its in use or not. i had 29 hours with almost no use, people on here get longer then that with a bit of use...
TL: DR slows your phone down, does make it look cool if your into that, but it doesnt save battery from what ive seen
I would love this app and I dont care if it kills my battery. The green is nice for using screen at night. Better then white screen at night. So do we have a answer where can we get it? Running droidX.
If you are using CM6, it is in Settings > Cyan Settings > Render effect.
You can also add a render fx widget to your home screen. Add it like any other widget.

You're right. The whole idea of showing only one color exploits the technology of OLED and its ability to only light up pixels on demand. LCD works by having the entire backlight always on, with polarizers selectively attenuating the light appropriately for each pixel. That's why LCD cannot achieve true black like OLED, and that's why OLED contrast ratio tests destroy LCD.
Since our Hero has the latter technology, this has absolutely no positive effects for us. Don't use it unless you like less colors.
So I have torn apart most of cyanogenmod's roms and settings trying to find this. So if anyone has it please upload that would be awesome

Hey guys,
Just to let you know there is an application out there now to take care of force recalibration of the screen.
When I first got my nook I know it didn't register touch properly, so I ran some commands and it started working fine.
Decided I should make my first app something that helps people, so here you go. Checkout "nook screen recalibrate". It's a simple minimalistic application the re calibrates then reboots
Updated Version 2.0
* Better GUI
* Button to start process
* Lowered MinSDK to support froyo (untested)
Here's the market link.
Helpful since you don't have enough posts to post links yet. But thanks for this app!
Ironically when I go to the link and try to push it to my NC, it says it's not compatible. :X
Fine print mentions that is only works with GB (android 2.3 and above).
yep.. i dont think any rom uses anything lower than that

The nookie froyo is based on 2.2.
If your software doesn't require 2.3 functionality, can you lower the required API to '7', which is the stock Android API level (2.2/Froyo)?

Ok maybe this is in my head, but if I run this every couple nightlies, touch feels slightly better and responsive.
Maybe it's the nightly, maybe the way it interacts, maybe the screen de sensitises over time, maybe it's all in my head

Thanks for the help!
if it persists after an initial reboot, you probably need to recalibrate the touch screen.
BTW, if you're having the screen bug out on you while plugged in, that's normal.
Anyway, sorry i don't have the link handy, but you can do a search for a touchscreen recalibration app. If you really can't find it after searching, PM me and i'll send you a link to a dropbox with the apk
It's a hardware issue. I had the same issue on my Nook color for a while. At first I thought it was software related due to CM7, but the issue persists even on stock and other roms. I actually exchanges my nook at best buy last night for a new one, and no longer have the issue at all.

Yeah I went back to stock and screen issues persist. Going to exchange it right now, hopefully get a working one this time. haha
I think it is a hardware issue... kinda.
Are you noticing any SD card problems too? I noticed some when my screen was glitching like this. It would show the sd card icon at the bottom (when I didn't have one inserted) saying "SD card corrupt need to reformat."
I bought mine on Sunday and it had the 1.1.0 OS on it. I was already noticing that it was difficult to "unlock" the slide bar because it wouldn't always follow my finger correctly... I think it's a bug in the 1.1.0 software that was factory installed. 1.2 seems to fix that.
For me I fixed it by replacing the 1.0.1 OS, then factory resetting it doing power+N twice (then N two more times), then upgraded to 1.2 using B&N's software.
Then, I formatted /system and /data and flashed phiremod 6.1
It's great now. Now problems at all. You'll still see the "Read forever" message at the beginning but that's ok.
Been using it for two hours without glitches... which is about 1.75 hours more than ever before! I will report back if the issues return.
Well got my new nook after exchanging it, works like a beaut.
hope i just didnt jinx myself.... hahaha
Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

Tap in the three xda letters; then, on the far left end of the suggestions, you should see xda itself; tap it. Once done, the bar should change to asking you if you want to add that word to the dictionary - tap that and it gets added.

That one raised by blood pressure more than a few points before I finally figured it out as well...
Also, if you go into Settings>Language & keyboards>Swype settings>Word suggestion and uncheck Auto-correction, it won't use the word it thinks you want in lieu of the word you typed when you hit the space key (which drove me crazy until I changed that setting).

I'm not seeing any lag with a non-overclocked NC.
Heck, it works beautifully on my Nook Color (7.0.2) and my HeroC
I was having constant lockups running CM7. I started uninstalling apps that were running services. When I uninstalled Swype, the lockups mostly stopped. I don't know if this was a coincidence. Anyone else experience lockups with Swype on CM7?
No lockups here and +1 for being super happy to have Swype on the NC. I had experimented enough to be able to hook up a usb keyboard and it worked, but it was a bit awkward using it. So I was looking for a small BT keyboard and then Swype sent me THE email. Very pleased and finally feel like my NC is all that it needs to be for my uses.
I feel very stupid, but where in the heck can I down load swype??? I go to the link but don't see a DL.
Thanks for your help

I come from the line of thinking that if my screen is darker then it's probably not using as much power, granted that difference may be minimal.
Is there anyway we can modify the layout of the pull-down device settings like the wifi tether icon doesn't seem to work on the Sprint version unless you have a specific data plan so I'd like to either remove it or swap it out with the application that I run for tether

Well, your line of thinking is incorrect. Imagine your phone is on full brightness and you put a piece of tint on the front of the screen. It will appear to be darker right? But in reality, it's just not projecting the light because you have a filter over it. Screen filter is exactly the same thing. There is no battery savings to be had with it.
Toggles will be edited for next release to fix/remove those that don't work or are useless. A
