[Q] Overclocking kernel - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a kernel that is able to overclock my cpu, that is safe to flash on my Serendipity 7 flashed Captivate? I searched all around the forum, but I could not find a direct answer. I want to be 100% sure which one is safe to flash, before I just go and flash one that I think is okay, then ends up bricking my phone. Can anyone help me please? It would be much appreciated.

A kernel flash will only give you a soft brick if it messes up. I would assume it works with a kernel appropriate for that version of Android
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate

Oh okay cool. I do have a user jig handy, so a soft brick wouldn't be a big deal. So it doesn't matter what one I flash? Or just keep flashing different ones until I find one that works? Lol.

Assuming Serendipity 7 is GB
Flash Corn Kernel 6 and KK4 modem.
Or another combination - see Apex ROM site for kernels/modems.

Thank you! I'll look into that soon.

How do I flash the unhelpful kernel

I am using the newest cog Tom and would like to be able to use a kernel that enables oc/UV and the different lagfix options. Can anyone tell me how I flash just the kernel over the cog Tom?

i wasnt aware that unhelpful had created a 2.2 kernel?
so what you want to do is flash a 2.1 kernel into a 2.2 rom? are you sure you have read the dev forums?
If there it is a 2.2 kernel, just flash the stock 2.1 kernel with odin and flash the one you want over (sorry vague) but just search it
*edit*
Its on the cognition wiki

i know how to flash a kernel, but the OP stated they were on the latest COG which is 2.2. unhelpful's kernel is a 2.1 kernel. flashing a 2.1 kernel on a 2.2 rom will end in boot loops....it wont be pretty.
the only kernel that i know of at this time for us to use OC/UV on 2.2 is setiron's, and its a modified i9000 kernel.
rather than trying to get someone else that has already done the legwork on learning ODIN to respond, I think the OP needs to read...a lot
I have been reading alot and can't seem to find a direct description on how to do this.

probably because you havent provided enough information....
i will repeat.
if you try to install unhelpful 2.1 kernel on a 2.2 rom, it WILL NOT work.
so, are you trying to do this on a 2.1 rom or a 2.2 rom?
there are plenty of instructions out there, so you havent read enough.....there are really only 2 ways to flash a kernel. through Clockworkmod or through ODIN.....pick your poison.
If you flash cog 2.1.7 you will have unhelpfuls kernel version 1.7 but i prefer version 1.4.1 despite the lack of voodoo lag fix. It just worked better on my phone. Great battery life.
overclocking may not be enabled at first so read unhelpfuls first post first if you dont get it ask more questions.
If you flash a cog 2.2bx 2.3bx or 2.4.x rom then you are looking for setirons kernel. It has more advanced lagfix options but i get battery drain so the undervolt thing is useless. There is a way to fix it but its too much to explain.
All in all overclocking is mostly for bragging rights. On ecliar it was good using unhelpfuls kernel.
Setirons kernel may be very advanced but there are tradeoffs it being an i9000 port.

(Q) MIUI to any other Rom.

I got the MIUI Rom on my phone at the moment (wonderful at first but now I grow bored of it). All I have is my phone, no computer for Odin and such. I have a backup of Continuum on CWM should I try to restore it or something else? Any help would be appreciated.
Sent from my I897 using XDA App
cm7 can be flashed over miui, because miui use a cm7 base. just factory reset and flash cm7
if it is froyo Continuum then in theory it should work.
just my 2 cents
Need odin, or cm7 anything else will soft brick phone

Alright, then ill see if I can get to a computer now lol. Thanks much.

I9000 Bootloaders and Customer Rom question

Ive recently flashed the 2.3.3 I9000 gingerbread bootloaders. Am I foolish to assume that I can now flash not only Captivate roms but galaxy s I9000 roms as well?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I9000 roms will require a captivate kernel for proper button mapping and orientation
Sent from my I897 using XDA Premium App
I've been running Talon kernels since I first got root. Can you recommend a good Captivate kernel that will work with the I9000 roms?
Sent from my GT-I9000
Talon should do, obviously gb version
Sent from my I897 using XDA Premium App
I tried to flash an I9000 jvr rom and the home button fix didn't work. So I flashed a talon kernel and got a soft brick. Flashed back to stock. Will have to try a diff kernel?

The ROM u r talking about comes with a kernel for captivate. You dont need to flash any fix on top of it. With that said you can flash I9000 roms that have been redone for captivate and which are present in Captivate Android Development and not Galaxy S Android Development

That was my original question. If any I9000 Rom would work now or if it had to be captivate specific.

Btw Watsa,
I just flashed Apex 9.0 JVR yesterday and haven't had a single issue. Very nicely done.

[Q]Bootloaders

Is there any way to check what bootloaders I am running? I did have the GB bootloaders installed when I ran Fusion, Fasty & J3 leak but I have Odin'd back to stock with the no bootloader version & Kies Mini upgraded me to Froyo. Does Kies flash the froyo bootloaders? Is there a way I can check using root explorer?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
If you flash a TB rom and it doesn't work. The only way to check.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
A side from trial and error of kernels and button cimbos you can't. Tho there might be some info in a UART readout. But getting it to even post UART is more then what most of us are willing to do.
leaked from my FUSED SGS I897 contaminating you via XDA app.
If I have an I9000 Gingerbread ROM installed, do I need to flash new bootloaders if I want to flash a Captivate ROM?

No. I've stayed on i9000 GB bootloaders and flashed Captivate ROMs; they work fine.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Normally no, gb bootloaders are compatible with each other, only the stock music player is known to misbehave. Some devs will advise you to use specific bootloaders, but in the end it's ur call. I'd say pick ur poison and stick with it, avoid flashing bootloader as much as u can, as it's THE part in the flashing process where your phone can be hard bricked.
Just flashed a GB stock rom w/ no BL's & it works. Looks like Mini Kies leaves the BLs alone when being upgraded from Eclair.

Are you on Rogers? if so then Kies did update the BL's, if it didnt and you try running a true GB ROM then you wouldnt be able to boot, it would have a bunch of weird colors on your screen when you tried to boot up...
I am on AT&T. Read my first post. I ran custom roms then I went back to stock then upgraded to Froyo thru Mini Kies. My question was to find a way to see what BLs I had after a Kies update. It seems not to touch them on AT&T until GB is official because I just tested another GB rom & it works.

Calling cm7 users. Need some advice.

A lot of conflicting info here and on rootzwiki.com. I just was asked by the play and trade guy to flash his captivate. All in trade for his pandoras battery and knowledge of its use. Basically fix my psp and I flash his phone. Ok I just want cm7 stable on here with a good oc kernel. Can I do like a mesmerize and odin flash a recovery and the. Flash cm7 and gapps reboot and do a kernel? What steps do I need to take. I see a lot about bricks in the captivate threads, are they easy to break? I'm told this o e is two years old. That would mean its probably ok with being able to get I to dl mode easy yeah?
Like I said alotta info floating around I just wanna do this right can a cm7 user break this down for me. It's an at&t phone if that matters.
Thanks in advance.

CM7 stable comes with an OC kernel. Just Odin in a kernel with CWM on it, then flash the CM7 zip.
Got a link to the right kernel to odin?

Flash the Glitch kernel as it OC's up to 1.7 ghz though I wouldn't recommend it.

I would say the Captivate is actually very difficult to brick, and going to CM7 has basically a 0% chance of a hard brick. As Aus_Azn points out, CM7 will overclock with the default kernal.
Install instructions (as long as you are coming from Eclair or Froyo) are here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
