Hey guys and gals,
My Galaxy S had an incident which resulted in a broken, non-responsive touchscreen. The phone itself is working and appears to have lost no data. I'd like to backup the phone in whole. Got it attached via USB and Dev mode, ADB, Droid Explorer and Android Screencast are working. Z4Root installed. Thought of two ways of backing-up the phone:
1. Use Android Screencast to backup through some GUI app. Problem: AS can't control the phone, give it control (by modifying /data/local) since the ADB shell has no root permissions and the app that gives those (Superuser, with Z4Root) is a GUI app. Double-rooting?...
2. Use the ADB shell to boot the phone in recovery mode and backup to the SD card using that. Problem: Need a suitable recovery image that I can control using just the volume and "home" buttons. Some reassurance that it won't screw my data up would also be welcome.
Would appreciate any help!
Edit: Downloaded recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-galaxys.zip (from a 2010 blog post by Koushik Dutta. Can't post a link due to technical reasons). Can I rename it update.zip and flash it from the default recovery? If so, than I would be able to do a Nandroid backup, wouldn't I?
Edit: Current build is xxJP7 with recovery version 3e, which means installing a new recovery image is going to be problematic. Also, no CF-Root version intended for this build. Unverified reports that other versions work for this build as well, but not in a hurry to risk it.
Edit: Managed to install the SpeedMod kernel using Odin 3 1.52 (and ADB and Android Screencast), following a guide written by Rodney Chua ("Tourist in Paradise" blog). Managed to backup in whole using the new recovery. Haven't been successful in testing the backup through the SDK emulator. Also wasn't able to repair the Android Screencast problem despite having root control through the new recovery.
Any way of testing a recovery image for integrity?
Edit: The strangest thing happened on the way to the forum: I Started Android Screencast and had GUI control over my phone, while my shell suddenly had root permissions. I used that chance to install the latest ClockworkMod recovery, and after getting the okay I tried to backup from within the program. After a couple of seconds my phone suddenly showed the old 3e recovery (which shouldn't really be there) with an error message. A reboot from ADB was normal, and a reboot to recovery brought me back to the SpeedMod recovery I've recently installed. No trace of a new Nandroid backup, and I've no Android Screencast control anymore.
I did find out, though, that the shell root permissions are due to Droid Explorer presumably running the adb root command on startup.
Edit: Somehow lost the IMEI and all related data. A Reboot sorted this somehow, though. Some icon and widget placement was lost, presumably do to the device clearing the dalvik cache after I've tried fixing the Android Screencast issue. Have the nandroid backup (and nothing significant has changed since doing that), so I don't care much. Android Screencast positively related to having ADB running with root permissions, though it occasionally stops working and requires an ADB and/or Android Screencast restart.
Edit: To sum things up, managed to do what I wanted to do - Got a complete nandroid backup.
Heard from adb based backup but would be interested too. Any similar to odin but in "pull" mode?

Logically speaking, this application should also work with the Bionic correct?
Just wondering, if its deemed safe in this thread to attempt using, I will try it and post back with results.

Okay, so I just backed up everything and tried the app, which won't work due to the fact that it checks the phone model number, Theres a manual guide to get ubuntu running on the atrix, and I'm going to start from scratch there. Probably going to be a couple of days before I do anything since I need a new microhdmi...
I tried the app that comes with it to partition the sdcard but it does a device check then it stops with an error message that the device is not an Olympus (Atrix). Maybe we can get the dev to check on the differences, albeit small, for the Atrix and the Bionic.
Worth a shot. I've been playing around with /osh for a few days but had to reflash to stock due to the lapdock staying on the screensaver.
Hey guys, I am working on the same thing at the moment trying to port over Sogarth's method of unlocking the 10.10 maverick build of Ubuntu on our phones.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000316
The link here is for his old automated .bat script he made for the Atrix that I believe will work for our phones with a little modification to it to reflect Maverick packages instead of the Jaunty packages for their phones.
Please jump into the irc in my sig because I would like to get this going as well.
I would hop in IRC but I'm about to head out the door.
I'm currently approaching this situation from two directions:
1.) I'm dumping /osh/ (webtop partition) and uploading it to dropbox as soon as I can get a complete dump. (hopefully tonight) and providing it to the original Atrix dev to see if he can hook us up with an app to help do whats needed
2.) I'm also attempting the manual method as soon as I get a new microHDMI cable (I was using a cheap adapter).
You are 100% correct though, you should be able to get that install script working just by changing the packages to reflect the updated Ubuntu. MAKE SURE you backup ANY files before you change them (and preferably a complete backup of /osh/. Since we have SU on our phones we have free reign over the /osh partition, so be careful in there.
OT: I can't wait until we can get on-demand CPU overclocking for this thing... if it clocks as well as past mobile chips... Toggle 1.2-1.4ghz and plug it in the LapDock. You'd have a damned fine netbook...
(Not necessarily talking to any experienced users or noobs, the disclaimer about Linux & SU is for everyone reading this thread - I'm relatively experienced in the Linux world... and I need to be reminded of SU's power sometimes.)
I just realized that their phone's Ubuntu distribution is under the 9.x series versus the 10.x series. A lot of Major changes happened to Ubuntu between 9.x and 10.x that affected the way the operating system talked to devices and booted, they stopped using HAL and moved to a new boot method, I am uncertain whether or not the install script will work or not, though I'm somewhat confident it will, given the nature of webtop (Android does the hardware abstraction, and the booting, we just run a second set of executable's on a different X window session attached to a different display) This should mean that the portions that would normally prevent us from just duplicated the script are omitted from the Ubuntu distribution entirely. As long as we keep a backup we should still be fine.
No worries, just remember to keep FXZ and RSD handy. I've screwed up the /osh partition a couple times but that has saved me from complete disaster so far
Good call on bringing this up. Let me know if you need to test anything for this.
@xaero252
So I modified Sogarth's script to use Maverick build of all the tools it downloads and installs but the problem with the script is that it needs the phone to have the ro.secure=0 so that ADB always launches with root access without manually initiating su each line of code. I am not sure if there is a way around it or if we have to modify the script differently. Anywho, I've upload a copy of the work I've done to the script.
Is it just an sh script? If so and ut doesn't reboot the phone at all you could launch a SU terminal and do "su sh script.sh"
oh i see the issue now... we would have to be able to edit the boot loader for that method... if i'm correct though his android app doesnt use the pc for much... if you change that variable on boot do you think it woukd work?
Hmm, I have an idea, its not as polished as the pc based script, however it should still work presuming you can get a SU terminal to run on the phone ( I happen to have one running right now ) I'm going to see if I can't adapt that to a bash script. probably going to take a while.
Curiously we happen to have a 1.5gb partition for Ubuntu on built in memory, where as the atrix only had a 600 or so mb partition... This is great because we should likely be able to continue to install /, /boot and such to internal memory, and use the sd card (even left as ntfs) for /home...
Couple of things: reading through the script it looks like 100% of the commands he runs could be run on the phone via a bash script run as su. The idea is this: convert the entire script over to bash, copy the script, and the required files to the phone, and execute the script from the phone. The only other concern I can see is the wget package included with the script not being compatible with maverick, which doesn't seem likely.
I'm gonna start working on rewriting the script linux native. My idea is to use a terminal emulator (they are free on the market) and run su script.sh and pray. I need to get a new microHDMI before I do this though, so I can test my results reliably.

As far as correcting that, no one has attempted doing custom kernels yet so to do the edit to get root access out of the gate is moot at this point.

Your linux skills are probably 10 folds better than mine but I believe if you convert my modified script, which has all the necessary links to the correct packages for our phone, then it might just work.

The WGET I packaged in the .zip is the correct for Maverick along with all the files in the \bin directory are corrected to match our phone. If you can convert all this to a bash script, that would be awesome instead having to do each command via ADB Shell. The only problem I had with this is every time I tried to run the DPKG command on the .deb I downloaded manually, it threw up an error saying it could not find the file or destination.
On a side note, you are correct that we have 1.5gb partition opposed to their 700mb so we could honestly forget the part about creating a ubuntu.disk on the /data partition and modify the /osh directly for now until the time we need more space. After that, we can see if Sogarth will incorporate your script into his Webtop2sd app or we could make a 3gb ubuntu.disk on the /data partition since we have plenty of space there.

Make sure you get the adapter as well to trigger Webtop cause at the moment our phone wont do webtop directly over HDMI without the HD Dock, Webtop adapter or Laptop dock. If you want to test the script out for now, hit me with the script and I will test it for ya
This tool is based on the original D4 Utility with additions and rewrites by me. Doing any of this is at your own risk.
08/14 Tool Version now 2.0 !!! THE JUMP TOOL IS DEAD!!! No reason for this now that we have ICS Fastboot files.
08/31 Tool Version now 2.1 Here's what's new
10/25 Tool Version 2.2 corrected minor script error and updated to safestrap 3.05
1. Set of instruction included within the tool. Once you open the tool select menu 1 to display them. This is a .txt file so you must have some reader (I use notepad++).
2. Safestrap 3.05 (Thanks Hashcode)
3. Latest Superuser (3.1.3) and binary (3.1.1)
4. Restore to 6.16.217 ICS or upgrade a GB phone to 6.16.217 ICS with option to save or erase data
5. Unroot script - This will remove superuser, the su binary and busybox. However if you boot into recovery it will still indicate root or at least past root (qe display in recovery). Even a fastboot with data wipe will not reset this.
Where to download: http://d-h.st/users/jsnweitzel
Add the ICS fastboot file to the lite tool to run menu 11 or 12. Get it here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/cdma_maserati/list.php Then unzip it and add the files to the "files" folder of the tool.
If you have trouble connecting your phone be sure you have the latest drivers installed from moto:
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_detail/a_id/78460/p/30,6720,8302
Use this tool at your own risk.
Can't wait to try this to go from .213 to .215! Will let you know my results. Right now, there are too many bugs in .213 for me to use it on a daily basis, hope .215 is better!
Edit: nevermind, d-h.st is back up again!
Edit 2: update went very smoothly, thanks!
Edit 3: fixed my issues with a data wipe - almost got bricked, but your tool saved me again! Now I'm back in action with .215 and having the best phone experience ever. If I could hit 'thanks' multiple times, I would!
Works just fine! Thank you very much!
..
Works great!!! Thanks
I just pushed this to my phone and now it is running soo much better (mostly due to the new build of the ICS leak) I was missing a home button and the lock screen, but so far not seeing too many bugs and I have root again. Brilliant! Cheers!
Just giving post a bump, updated tool.
FYI, there is no link to the .217 OTA zip in the OP.

Thanks for the heads up. Fixed the link.
So let's see I'm reading this correctly.
I installed the 217 leak file today (got tired of waiting for the ota soak test) and lost root.
To get it back I just need the lite version linked above, is that correct?

So it looks like it worked I don't see superuser in my app drawer and when I try an app that can use root like estrongs file explorer it says "feature not available"
Any ideas? I've tried it multiple times and with two different computers (one on vista the other xp pro) and same result.
Thanks.
It look like the install of busybox and superuser were skipped (failed is probably more accurate) for some reason. Did you have the phone set to "MTP" or "PTP" mode. You don't want to run it in mass storage.

I don't remember which one it was set as. Does it make a difference on mtp or ptp mode for which one works better?
I have only seen an issue with the mass storage mode. Check in the tool files folder and be sure that a copy of Superuser.apk is there. If it still doesn't work I can't see why. As a last resort you could try installing it from the market.

Thanks for the help, the superuser is there in the files folder.
I'm debating if I should try it from the market or just try fastbooting the phone and see what happens.
I only want to root to get rid of the bloat, not sure if I'll install custom roms or not yet on this one.
You can "disable" some apps without root. Looking under settings and apps. Select one and hit disable. For some you will have to uninstall updates first.

I'll look into that.
I'm going to try downloading the full tool and try that, I was just using the lite version. It shouldn't make a difference but I figure it doesn't hurt to try it. If that fails I'll try to decide what my next step will be.
I tried to install superuser from the market but it wouldn't let me.
just get the one on the market and update the binary and it should work fine.. tib wiil fix the perms when you run it the first time. tried it b4 and it works fine

Are you talking about the superuser app from the market? I tried to get it and it wouldn't let me install it, claims it's already installed but it doesn't show up in my app drawer.
---------- Post added at 11:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 AM ----------
I GOT IT!!!!!!!!
I had an idea based on the comment about getting from the market so I tried the idea and it worked.
I copied the superuser apk file over to my sd card, I installed it from there and said to go ahead and replace the file that was there. I opened it directly after the install and updated the binarys (said it was current but did it anyway) now my root apps ask for and get super user permission.
So it looks like I'm up and running.
Thanks,
Brent.
I made a mistake when changing the DPI on my LG Flex using Texdroider DPI, this happened to me before when i set a too lower value. Now my phone boots and i immediately get a UI crash error which i have to press ok and it appears again, in the time between errors the phone is not responsive.
First my phone came with 4.0.2 which i rooted using ioroot then i modified the DPI, crashed bad one time as it was not booting anymore but i was able to use adb to restore the backup files (build.prop) that the program (Texdroider DPI) made. I had to use the same PC from which i performed the rooting process but it worked eventually.
I then updated to 4.4.2 and my phone was unrooted, after that i used towelroot to root it again and it installed the SuperUser app. Now i am stuck with my problem:
Tried using ADB shell to restore the backup files but i need root permission to do so.
1. When trying adb root i get "adbd cannot run as root in production builds" (Error which didn't appear in the past)
2. When i try adb shell then su nothing happens in the command window, but on the phone i get a popup for granting access to "adb" and i cannot press the Grant button as my phone is not responsive.
What can i do in this situation? Are there any solutions for one of these two methods? Like granting privileges to adb trough the command window?
Please Help, Thank you.
unless you have custom recovery or can grany adb root access i think your only option since it still is restock

ArchLinuxARM for the tenderloin (HP TouchPad) - Native Boot with moboot
This is only tested on the Wi-Fi version. With a kernel swap, it should work on the tenderloin3g (LTE) tablet, though mobile data is highly unlikely to work. I also don't know if there exists a 3.4 kernel for the tenderloin3g, and you'd have to cherrypick many, many commits.
THIS REQUIRES A DATAMEDIA ROM.
Working:
3D Acceleration (OpenGL ES 2.0, Mesa) - can be unstable, however.
Wi-Fi (with NetworkManager)
Bluetooth
Audio (requires manual intervention)
Installation
MultiROM must already be installed, and you must already have a hardboot-capable kernel installed as well.
You will need a Terminal Emulator or ADB Shell to install.
This assumes that arch_tenderloin_20141210_root.tar.gz and uImage.Arch are already in the root of your internal storage (/data/media/0).
Code:
su
mkdir /data/local/arch
tar -C /data/local/arch -xpzvf /data/media/0/arch_tenderloin_20141210_root.tar.gz
mount -o remount,rw /boot
cp /data/local/uImage.Arch /boot/
mount -o remount,ro /boot
Booting
Select "Arch" on the moboot menu.
Read Me
If you WIPE DATA, it will also WIPE OUT THIS PORT, any applications installed with it, and all data saved under /home/arch!
Logging in
The username is "arch" and the password is "archlinux". Change the password ASAP.
For root, the username is "root" and the password is also "root". CHANGE THE PASSWORD ASAP!
You'll probably want to enable the On-Screen Keyboard (onboard) and set your Session to "MATE" up in the top right corner.
Making audio work after boot requires you to open a terminal, run alsamixer, set speaker_stereo_rx up by one, and then set PCM Playback Sink Rear up by one. The headphones are controlled by the mixer channel named Headphone. The speakers are controlled by the mixer channel named Output.

Can anyone help me straighten that out? Also how hard would it be to get Funtoo Linux running in this fashion? The last time I tried I could only get it running under a chroot on a 15GB partition...

I'm having the same problem. So does webos need to be installed for this to work?
Unfortunately, even though web OS isn't required for any functionality (back in the TP ubuntu days it was needed for audio), I stupidly left /dev/store/root (web OS root) in the /etc/fstab file for this build.
Next build will include optional portable VSXu player, several emulators, newer Mesa GL, and an audio patch. I'll archive it as soon as I can slim it down.
GNOME 3 even sorta works, but don't actually use it because there are unrendered black squares and it's quite slow on this device.

Cant wait! My touchpad is awesome now. Arch ftw.
This is awesome! Thanks a lot, castrwilliam! Nearly everything is working well for me, even KDE!
Chromium has very good touch support. You can enable pinch-to-zoom in chrome://flags . Extemsions, such as uMatrix, work fine. Finally, a good web browser on HP touchpad!
However, I do have a couple small questions.
In KDE, when I enable compositing in kwin_gles using opengl, the colors are reversed (blue is displayed as orange). Is there any way to fix this? When using xrender, it's ok, but I have to disable lots of effects to get decent performance. HW acceleration would be nice.
In future images, could you please include touchegg-gce from AUR? It's really helpful, and I'd imagine that pretty much anyone using this without hw keyboard and mouse would find it useful.
Stupid newbie question (Sorry, I'm new to Arch Linux): Speaking of AUR, is there an easy way to automatically set arch to 'armv7l' in PKGBUILDs in yaourt? It's kind of a pain to edit them every time.

Are you planning on reviving Ubuntu for the Touchpad?
Sent from my LG-ls990 using XDA Free mobile app
Started running this last night. But, it takes a little extra work. I run evervolv 5.0.2 dulaboot with webos. I also use twrp. With all those, /boot is too small to add. About .5Mb too small. My solution was to cut uImage.TWRP from boot and store a copy elsewhere until needed. That gave me the nesecarry room I needed. When I need TWRP again, I will temp move uImage.Arch and put twrp back in.
Is anyone still working on this? I'm what I hope is charging my TouchPad and I want to try this again.

Cool. Are you around right now to help me get it installed? How would we talk about it? iRC via PMs?

BTW, for my current attempt I'm basically using this https://github.com/crimsonredmk/ArchLinuxARM-TouchPad/blob/master/Installation.md but when it talks about the uImage and rootfs I'm using castrwilliam's. I'd ultimately like to use the latest rolling release available for ALARM, but I want to see what happens with that's currently available.

Sweet. Let me know when you have it working and I'll try it on my 32 GB TP.
