[Q] How to get Official OTA update after root - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I purchased my Note from Amazon.de and it came with Baseband Version: N7000XXLB2 which is a German version. I live in England so I wanted to move to a UK rom. As I could not root it by any given method, I downladed " N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000CPWKK3 -----------United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)" and flashed it via Odin. Than I got my root but now I can't get it updated via built in Software Update thing. My current Baseband is:N7000XXKK5. Any suggestions to get official OTA updates?
Regards

I believe because you are on latest build 2.3.6 that you won't get any OTA updates until ICS is available. I've never had one OTA update (had the phone for 6 months) and always put this down to the fact that I have manually updated many kernels and ROMs so am always on a recent one.

If you flashed the latest UK rom then you won't get any OTA updates since it's the latest rom.

Even if you get ota you should not update as you would loose root doing so.

make sure you only have root and not non stock kernel.
that stops ota as well as having different csc than the stock rom you are with. In my experience at least.
So if you dont have latest rom for your csc and do want it with functional ota then flash through Odin a pre december version that is rootable in conventional way. Then only root it. After root try Ota, it should deliver incremental upgrades. After each test root thought by updating superuser app. Tedious process but that guarantees keeping Ota and root for me at least.
All at own risk, and do the proper backups like efs if you havent done so already. pm if you need more details

[Q] ICS for Note

Hi,
I have rooted my Galaxy Note and wonder how I can upgrade to ICS when it is out by Samsung? Can I just upgrade over the air, will it work? Or I have to wait till the official roms are posten in forums?
Thanks
If you're using a stock rom and only rooted it chances are you can just OTA or use Kies to update. If that doesn't work you can flash the official firmware for your region and update OTA or through Kies or just use Odin to flash the official firmware when it's available here on XDA, which I imagine will be very quick after it's officially released.
should be around june time and might be an ota update but you would lose root access
.
Then I shouldn't update OTA? Because I want to keep the root. If I update and lose the root then I have to downgrade the rom, root and then flash the new update?
The easiest way is to wait for the update and use odin mobile pro to update it, when the rom is available here?
Thanks for replay
For now that would be your safest bet yeah. Chances are there will be a pre-rooted ICS firmware available pretty soon, if not you should be able to everroot flash the official firmware in Mobile Odin when it's available.
dont worry about the kies or ota update. get a kernel with cwm and when ics update for note released there will be stpck and lots of custum ics roms that can be flashable with cwm

[Q] How to downgrade to a previous Firmware (Galaxy Note)?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note N7000. I upgraded it from the stock 2.3.6 Gingerbread ROM to the latest German 4.0.3 ICS using Odin.
Now my issue is as follows...
1. When I connect my phone via kies, it says "Your Device does not support upgrading via Kies". Does this mean that when Samsung decides to upgrade the Note with an Indian Firmware, I would not be able to move to that version?
2. If the answer to the question above is that I cant get the Indian Version, I would like to Revert my Phone back to the Older version (2.3.6 Gingerbread).
3. If I revert to the older version, will my Phone OTA itself to the Indian Version when its on offer?
Thanks for the expected support in advance.
1. Correct. You definitely would not be able to push an Indian update to your phone through Kies while you are on the current firmware. You would need to use other options such as Odin.
2. ...
3. Yes. After you move back to a GB ROM, you will get OTA notification if and when an OTA update is available (or you can always manually check in Settings>About Phone>Software Update if any update is available OTA). You can then proceed to the update. This would be region specific based on which region's stock firmware you revert to. If you want to receive an Indian ROM OTA, you would need to go back to an Indian Stock ROM.
Thanks a ton rxpaul

Updating With Kies Or Odin?

I still have the original stock Gingerbread ROM. If I update to stock Jellybean via Odin, will I still receive OTA updates? Or would I need to use Kies to guarantee future OTA updates?

if you update the stock rom without root.. u will still get update OTA.. it doesn't matter if u use kies or odin for that.. just keep the stock rom and do not root for OTA update
Thanks for the reply. Do I need to flash the rom version which would usually be sent OTA by my network to receive future updates? If so, which version do I need for T-Mobile (EE) UK?

if i root note 5 right now can i get 6.0 update OTA?

Can i get the ota update simply or will it brick my rooted phone

If you are rooted right now you will not be able to get ota updates. The only way to update is to go through odin and update or flash a rom with the newest update or unroot your device and then update.
I'd like to answer your second question but I would like some clarification on the question.
And the update to 6.0 could be from a couple of weeks to a couple of months or even longer. It depends on you carrier and samsung of course.
The phone is the international variant 920c dual sim
I have not rooted yet but will love to do it.
If marshmalow is near them i will wait
No rooted phones of Samsung will receive OTA updates. Unroot by flashing the stock rom with ODIN and look for OTA. Or else, download latest stock firmware from samobile or similar websites and update with ODIN. Then re-root if you want.

Software update and root

My phone is rooted and I have a custom recovery installed, but I'm on stock firmware. When I search for software updates, it doesn't tell me my device has been modified, but just goes on to say I'm on the latest update (August security patch for my region).
My question is: when the September security patch arrives, will I be able to do the update without losing root or any other issues?
If your on the snapdragon note 8 u cant root and never will be able to again

Hi mate,
As long as I know:
- you wont be able to use OTA sine you did root. (strange the is not saying your device has been midified. just install root ckecker from goole play to make sure you are root)
- if you flash any originial rom via Odin, your custom kernel will be replaced with Samsung original kernel and you need to root your device again.
I hope it helps you
An update, if anyone happened to be interested. The September update for my carrier is now available. When I went to check for software update in the settings, the device finally told me the system has be modified in unauthorised ways so I can't download the update via OTA. That means I'll have to download it from Sammobile and flash via Odin and lose everything and start fresh.
