[Q](Solved) Micro usb problem - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone charges fine, and my usb jig works fine. When I connect it to the pc. It charges fine. But to connect it to the pc, so I can mount the sd card or so I can connect to Odin, the micro usb doesn't connect right away for data transfer.
I need to insert the micro usb a little tiny bit, wait a second, then push it the rest of they way in, so the usb debugging notification pops up. And most of the time, I have to repeat the process of inserting and removing the micro usb several times, until the usb debugging and usb storage shows up in my notification Window.
I want to ask if anyone else has this problem. If so, is it the usb port going bad in my phone? It was like this ever since I bought the phone from ATT. Brand new out of the box, with contract.
EDIT: switched Samsung usb cables, and connected right away, no problems. No playing with the cable to try to get it to connect.

That sounds like a hardware defect. Also, try using a different USB cable. How long have you had it?

It may not b the usb port on the phone... I have 2 micro usb to usb cables, one that originally came with my captivate and it has always been loose. The other that I have came with my sgs 2 and it fits real snug in the captivate. ---- So maybe just try a different cable. Worth a try.

Hmm, that is true. The cable I use to flash my phone is a Samsung cable that came with my phone, and it fits a little loose. However, the cable I use to charge my phone fits snug. I haven't tried to connect it to my pc though. I was doing what I read on here, about using Samsung usb cables. So I will try it out, and see if it's the problem. Thanks.
EDIT: That was the problem. The cable is a Samsung, but it's not the cable that came with my phone. But it connects right away, no problems at all. I don't know why I didn't think about that in the first place. Lol. It's always the littlest things that you forget to try. Thank you!

USB OTG with charging?

Anyone had any luck with these cables? Specifically using an external DAC while still powering the phone. It's possible on my Nexus 7 with a custom kernel.

I am using one of these cables, but in a different manner, ie I am accessing a WD Passport 1TB external drive. (does not have ac in) Both my drive is powered AND my phone is charged. (tried using both a 10kmAh external battery pack as well is direct AC adapter.
Know it's not exactly the setup you are using, but as far as cables go, the phone seems to work well with this setup. YMMV

If I may ask, where did you get the cable? The only one I found so far is on Amazon and review there say that it will not charge the phone, just the external device.

Got the same cable and its not working, do we need a special kernel to make it work?
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
On my Nexus, I did have to flash the right kernel. I'm guessing that will have to happen here too.
Why not make a cable that will charge and otg

Just an update. I ordered one of these http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=261170130579&index=0&nav=SEARCH&nid=87388073446
Should have it next week to test but based on the seller's description and testing on similar devices, sounds promising. I'll report back.
I have just bought it.
Initially USB hosting works, but I have no chance to charge at this time.
-----update-----
The female micro USB jack does not charge the phone like the one for Galaxy Tab.
Do you think we still need to add a 40.2k ohm resistor just in the galaxy s3 and will a stock kernel work?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I would like to add I managed to get an OTG + charging cable working for the Note 2 (N7100) using a cable made with these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061
But... the 4.1.2 update stopped the USB from working on my Note 2, and someone else is reporting a similar problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38611244&postcount=42 . What happens is the Note 2 does detect it's using a dock, but the USB functionality doesn't work for some odd reason (even after a reboot).
I will reply again if it starts working in a future update.

Probably the same as the s3 - shorted pins = otg+no charging, resistor fools the phone into thinking it has an accessory/dock that can charge safely.

It sees that it's in a "dock" but nothing I plug in will work. It does charge though. If I short out the pins I get host mode, but no charging. This is with the Jedi rom, not stock.

[HELP]USB port/Charging port is not functioning?

Anybody out there knows how to solve my problem, my phone's usb port or charging port is not funtioning, I try to charge with my moto charger but no response, but when I try my charger to charge other devices, there's no problem, it do charging, what should I do? Does my usb port/charging port is brick/damage??

Have you tried other cables with your phone? For a while I had charging issues with my original cable... I had to position the cable at almost an angle to get the contacts to connect. Then I decided I was tired of having a phone that didn't always charge at night so I got a new Staples brand cable and had no issues since. So point is try a different cable to see if the problem is your phone's hardware or the cable's.

Chances are the soldered contacts broke. Hope it didn't pull up any of the PCB board then theres no fix short of replacing the board. Good luck. FYI if your not a repair tech I wouldn't attempt the fix myself.

Serious Micro USB problem

Hi everybody,
The Micro USB of my Galaxy Note is broken, I can therefore no more use it to charge the battery and no more connect it to the computer. Thankfully I can charge the battery using an external charger. The problem is that I have no operating system loaded in the device and I can no more boot to the custom recovery (CWM). The device is rooted, I can only start the bootloader of the device.
So, my question is: Is there a way to flash a custom recovery or anyway to flash a ROM from bootloader without connecting to the PC? Is there a way to use SDCARD to repair the device? Anyway to resolve the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Your only choice is to replace the usb port. Without recovery you can't install custom roms from the micro sd and without pc connection, you can't install stock roms or connect via adb.

Thank you for your answer. Do you think I can link the 4 cables that are inside the USB cable to the Micro USB port pins of the device ? I mean to do it temporarily to connect the device to the PC. May it work that way?

Here is a cut and paste of my post from another thread. it will be useful to you.
take a look at your original usb port and put it next to the imitation cheap board from ebay. you will see that it looks exactly the same at first glance but at close inspection you will notice different labeling. I have bought 6 boards from ebay from different sources and all were bad. some with no sound, one wont charge, one will turn off the phone when I connect the charger.
Now I have established what a real usb port looks like with the conductive tape covering the back antenna. I have ordered 2 parts from 2 sources who have confirmed all the original marking and labels on their parts. they claim its original and OEM. so give me time so I can receive the item, install and test it. then I will give my review.
meanwhile you can look at these 2 different sellers. I think they have original parts.

parts4repair.com has working ones for sure. Lot of ebay sold are found faulty, if you search the threads.
Also make sure you get the proper revision
yeah... make sure no get a low quality Charger port flex cable. THe low quality one really troublesome i just waste and replacet 2 useless port in half year due to purchase low quality one....
NOw hoping the third one dont fail me in short time.

Galaxy S I9000 only charges with USB cable

I am hoping that someone out there can help me. My sgs i9000 does not charge when using the mains charger. It charges when plugged into a laptop is in the USB cable okay though. I have bought, both a new battery and a new charger, but the problem persists. Has anyone had or heard of this problem? Better still, does anyone have a solution?
I thank you all in advance.

Thanked you by accident when I went to quote you there
It probably isn't his USB port on the phone if it's charging fine from a laptop with USB cable.
I'd be checking that the charger definitely works by charging another device with it, if you have one. The voltage pins on the phones socket are the same whether you're charging with a charger or plugging into a computers USB, so if one way wasn't working then nothing should be working.

Could just be the plug on the charger possibly, I've had that happen before. There are two little sprung prongs on one side of it. I've had well used chargers before that I've had to get a pair of pliers and pull them out a little..
The fact that it works on your wife's phone doesn't mean it can't be the plug on your charger. Could just be that your USB port is a tiny bit more worn than hers. Doesn't mean that your port is totally screwed.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I have tried three different chargers and none of them charge my phone. I'm very interested in your comment about the USB port being slightly more worn.
I am constantly flashing different Roms etc across using ums/ mtp so that does make sense. Also the USB cable that I use to charge my laptop is an old Nokia cable and the USB connector (phone end) is a little tighter.
Thanks.

Hi @sbnaul Unfortunately I haven't had much progress at all. My device connects with Odin & PC etc with no problem, it is just the charging issue using the mains charger. I have discovered that if I push in and hold the usb connector of the mains charger it will charge. Obviously though, none of us have the time to sit there and hold the phone for its charging process. If I have any further progress I will post here. Good Luck with your own problem, that must be a headache.
