I have a NAS connected to my router by ethernet which I store all my media on, is there any way I can connect to this from my phone when connected to the same router via WiFi?
I've seen plenty of apps to access your phone from your PC but nothing that fits the above.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you would like to access all files on your PC you can use LAN option in app called ES Explorer, it's really good. If you only need access to media such as movies, mp3 you may be satisfied with BSPlayer (it's got LAN mode).
If you just want to access media on the NAS then you can use the AllShare app that is preinstalled. It will automatically detect media servers on your network.

+1 for BS player - it's awesome! For the few occasions I need More power I also use es file explorer.

My NAS isn't DLNA, it's just a standard 250gb drive that's connected to my router via ethernet. Am trying bsplayer, not had any success as yet but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I'm trying to use the app (winamp remote) to listen my music library on my Nexus. Went to the market and downloaded and installed on the phone. did go also to get the server application and installed on my pc. opened port 1950 on my rooter. I'm able to establish a connection from my phone to the pc over the net. I see (over remote access on another pc) the player on the pc starting. when i press play in my Phone - so there is a connection established. The only thing i'm not able to see working is the sound on my phone. Can anyone point me in the righ direction? or give a good alternative to use with my pc software. Thanks in advance

is there other app can do this from remote location? by wifi or it must be by internet?
I use LogMeIn to connect to my work computers.

Splashtop Streamer ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.splashtop.remote ) allows you to control your PC from your phone, both on local network or over the Internet. It also transmits audio, can stream 3D-content and video. A lot more efficient than VNC.
It however is not a free product, it costs around ~4e.
What I'm really looking for, essentially, is some sort of a connection between my Nexus 7 and my PC, wirelessly, so I can stream / use files on my Nexus 7 while I'm in bed etc.
I have not the slightest clue what it is, and hence I couldn't do a search for it, because I don't even know the 'keyword' for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Try Plex: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en
You can use ES File Explorer to stream one file at a time, so it would work for video, but not so well for music. I thought I would throw this out there because you did not mention what type of media you wanted to stream.
I use ES Explorer. Swipe left to access the wireless networks. I have a hard drive plugged into my router so that I can stream films to mx player without any pc needing to be powered up.

If you do have TV and Movies organized on a network accessible drive, then Plex is amazing. Had a good organization of my files on a PC I have always on. Installed Plex Media Server on the PC, and the Plex app on my Nexus 7, and it pulls up episode descriptions and everything.
I am very impressed.
if your Nexus 7 and pc connected to a router then use bsplayer setting up for LAN then you can use your N7 to play any audio/video from your pc.
XBMC
I've gotta recommend XBMC. It let's you stream all your media, from videos to pictures. It also presents it in a beautiful way too. Plex's underlying code is actually XBMC.
Hi, I don't have wI-fi as I've just moved and am using a usb dongle for internet on my laptop, is there any way I can use said laptop as a "router" to download big apps on my phone to save on my 3g limit? Any help is greatly appreciated, cheers

If your laptop has Windows 7 you can use an app called Connectify that allows you to create a hot spot on your laptop. Then you can use Wi-Fi to connect to your laptop.
Another option is to use an reverse tethering app. Search here in general Android forum.

If you are running Windows and your laptop internet is from lan cable, you use internet sharing from lan to your wireless adapter.
As previous post, its alot easier using connectify,,,

I've tried multiple times but can't get this to work? Neither can I connect to my pc wirelessly using the companion, it simply says connecting indefinitely. Does anyone have any solutions?
Thanks.
I don't know if you can use the throw function with your ps3 or laptop.
But you can enable the media server function, then you get access to the files on your phone through pc or ps3. I use this with my ps3 and Vaio laptop and it works fine.
