SGN display turn on by itself - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear friends! I need your kind help in answering the question why in screen lock mode, SGN screen turns for a second and turns off. It is not really a big issue for me, but sometimes when the phone is on the table it annoys already.
I thank you very much for your support!
Yours Fernando

Some app like weather widgets have options to wake phone up for some activities. Check your installed apps for this kind of setting and clear.

It could be an incoming SMS or phone alert, or an alarm...
Do you install any android apps which allow your note to be remotely controlled?

Thank you for responding! Actually no, I do not have any installed apps that remotely control the note. I thought about it, but guess there is no such apps.

Uninstall any suspicious apps you have installed ,or better yet root and install ad free ,air push ,and other ad checking apps on the market.
Then uninstall anything that gives you ads.
It happened yo me on my S2 before ,it's always an app that I installed keeping the phone from entering deep sleep thus causing battery drain.
Now adays I only install what I absolutely need.

Samsung Push Service?

Anyone know what this is about? Is it basically the same as Carrier IQ? Do I need it or should I just uninstall it?
It's one of Samsung Apps updates, although you can still use them without it. I removed it since i don't like apps with the word "push" in them and my battery life got a lot better ( i removed a lot of other **** too so I can't be certain that was the issue ) Got approx 1%/h now in standby, in case we have different views on what good batt life is
How do you remove this?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Go to Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, it should appear in the downloaded list. Tap it and select "Uninstall".
It was also draining my battery as a wakelock, as detected by Better Battery Stats. Uninstalled with no issues.
At first I was paranoid it was going to affect push capabilities on my e-mail, but apparently it's just to push updates or announcements on Samsung apps.
Hope this helps.
You could also freeze it with titanium backup if you don't like the idea of uninstalling it

I freeze all the unnecessary samsung services and apps. push was the biggest wake drain
Hey guys, so What exactly is this? I keep getting a notification to install this but when I click it takes me to samsung apps to download and says this product does not exist. Any thoughts?

*backup* (Android System) - eating up my battery; what is it?

Check out the attached screen shot. That's from Better Battery Stats. Whatever it is, it's eating up my battery. Battery life has been half what it used to be. Any idea what *backup* is and how to keep it from running all the time?
Also, I installed Nitrodesk Touchdown and used it for email on my exchange account for awhile, but it didn't improve the email delay issue so I reduced it from push email to polling once every 24 hrs., but it's still running a lot. Any idea how to reduce that?

You may have enable option 'Keep backup of android device' while adding google account, just disable it
Thanks, that was it. I disabled it and froze Nitrodesk Touchdown, and my battery life shot up. Like 35 hours instead of 15.
I have the same issue on my I9100. How can I disable the backup function afterwards?
Edit: Found it

Hah! I love that. It is a setting to send all your passwords to Google, and it is under 'Privacy'!
Luckily I automatically unchecked that when I set up the account. I mean, seriously, rely on their security? What kind of security plan is that for anyone to adopt?
Does the Google backup really use a noticeable amount of battery? I like the convenience of it, but I'd turn it off for better battery life.

should i uncheck both options?
Back up my data
Automatic restore
i didnot understand the use of Automatic restore. when we update apps, we get our old data back. if i uncheck this will i lose saved data from older version?
edit: both options were checked for me. i unchecked it immediately. any other such hidden settings i might have missed? hope the battery life increases now.
Once you uncheck first option, other will disable automatically. B'coz if it dont backup your data, there is no question to restore it.
With this unchecking you wont lose anything right now. it is for next use, In case of you hard reset, it will restore some data automatically, in case of you have enable it.
But better you can use titanium backup or mybackup pro to do this n make schedule to backup at desired time. It won't kill your battery by sync all the time.
I never enable this function.
Had this same problem with my S3, unchecked the boxes after reading this. Is the something we can freeze in Titanium backup aswell? All i can see is /system/app/backuprestoreconfirmation
out of 7 hours on time it kept my phone awake for 5 of them! its mental.
Just unchecked the backup option. Note that google doesn't back up you phone constantly, it only happens a few times a month.
But why take chances?
Does this option interfere with the contact back-up from my gmail adress ?
These wakelocks are a major issue in all androids...
I had these wakelocks with my Motorola Milestone (because of WiFi, GPS, ...) and now on the Note with several ROMs. It should not be so easy for a userspace app to raise such a lock ... maybe some developer can write an app that notifies the user if the device does not sleep? And, even better, ask for killing and deinstalling the misbehaving app, if possible, even from the market...

There is an app already for that.. I'm not sure if it had been suggested already before but it is called CpuSPy (look for it in google play). What the app simply do is to monitor in the background and constantly you can tap on it and see if your phone is in a very deep sleep or not (it has a bar to determine how much or how little your phone goes into deep sleep). Also you can try to install Betterbatterystat(also from google play) to see which app or apps are causing the wakelocks on your phone. After you've verified those 'misbehaving app/s', then that'll be the time you can uninstall /remove it for yourself. Killing it won't do any good at all, because the moment you restart your phone, the said process/app would simply start back again as well. You need to really uninstall it thru Titanium backup.
On the side note. I don't think there will ever be an app that you can automate to uninstall any 'misbehaving apps' in your phone as Google generally has laws on it, governing some stance that says something to the effect as "no apps can be allowed to violate or remove other apps on the phone automatically". It would still be the user's discretion to manually uninstall those rogue apps by himself on his phone.
Hope that helps a bit.
Cheers!
What does the "data" mean here? Like Titan Backup?
But every time I flashed a new ROM, it seems like I still need to retype my WIFI password and no app data was restored

I am not sure you need to freeze it. I had a rooted Arc before, and used Android Assistant to stop apps like this starting up. The real benefit of it is you can block all the listeners' every app and service has. The listeners are what makes it pop back up again when you have killed it (like WiFi sharing does, and &*^% Social Hub & Buddies!).
Used with the start up kill as well, you have a clean fast start, more RAM, and more battery. The price is zilch too, although I recommend buying it just to support it. What's not to like?
Edit: It is autorun that stopped things loading, and listening to events. Android Asst just prevents loading on boot.
Install Titanium Backup or AntTek App Manager and freeze it/them. I've done it myself.
And how to do it with antek application manager
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
1. You must be rooted of course
2. Open the app and hit the "Apps" tab
3. Search for "Wi-Fi Sharing Manager" and "Wi-Fi Sharing"
4. Tap on it/them and choose "Freeze"
5. Done!
Thank you very much

Is this the only way to get rid of this? I think this is also the case for my bad battery performance as well. So, no way to stop it or kill it without 3rd party software?
Nope, it's a system process, so you'll need root to freeze/delete or do anything about it. If you kill it manually using a task manager the process with start again within seconds.
How long should it take? I'm using Titanium Backup-Pro, been sitting on "freezing Wi-Fi Sharing manager 1.0" for over 5 minutes.
Sorry noob questions, but...
What is the benefit to freeze those apps?? What is its purposes? What would be the cons?

When you freeze an app with Titanium (or some other system app manager), the system doesn't see it anymore. It's still there, but out of action until you defrost it.
It's a useful feature to experiment with temp shutting down of system apps - if you see that something is wrong, you defrost it, and everything's fine.
If you uninstall it, OTOH, if something bad happens, you're stuck.

If you mean "why freeze those particular apps?", then the answer is that if they are not used, they are just wasting battery and RAM by running. This is true of a large number of built-in apps that Samsung, and indeed carriers, put on your phone for you.
These particular ones serve no purpose for 90% of users [sorry, needed for Kies air, disregard], so are best stopped. Even if you do use them, they are best prevented from starting up until you want to use them.
freezing wifi sharing and wifi manager will cause kies air not working. unless you never used kies air and planning to freeze it too then i think it should be ok
I want to ask WHAT THE HELL IS THAT WIFI SHARING APP?! How can it be so badly done... I mean it's killing battery as once launched it never stops. I just can't get it...
And that's why we freeze/remove it If you don't use Kies, then get it over with and kill it (the permanent way)

Fact is, after i froze them (all social hub) wifi sharing came and freezing it didn't change anything, it was still running from boot!
Freeze both wifi sharing and wifi sharing manager.
It will not come back after boot. Tested on 2 S2s and a Note.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I use Autorun manager to disable all the 'listeners' that these apps have (one is for boot). This is in many ways better because I can still use them by actually running them, but they do not start by themselves.

Third Party App Notifications not working unless App is Open

I've noticed that if you use a third party app for SMS like Signal, you dont get a notification unless the application is open, same with gmail.
Has anyone else noticed this?
go to advance setting >battery manager >protected app and check if application is not checked on , that's mean when screen is off the application will not work unless you open it... so if you need notification from certain apps just mark it on

This is a the 'doze' function in Huawei EMUI. A lot of firmwares have this issue. It's because Huawei has blacklisted many apps to not to send notification when screen is off. The apps that are white-listed include WhatsApp and some Chinese Tencent crap.
There is a method to enable notifications for all apps but obviously that requires root.
And yeah, Welcome to EMUI, a UI that plays with your emotions.

All I can say is I have turned on every apps to run when the screen is off. I do t get any notifications, only if I go on the app or if I turned the phone off then back on I get a batch of notifications. I receive certain apps notification but its not consistent. Can't wait for a good root, to get rid of this crappy EMUI and hopefully the camera app will be ported, I'm happy with the pbone, the camera, but this UI is from hell.
Weird, I have 0 issues with notifications, everything turns up very quickly. Gmail, whatsapp, youtube comments... Etc.
I also use Nils lockscreen notifications though, I have the huawei lockscreen notification system disabled. It works very well like this until I find the time to root.

I only disabled the huawei lockscreen notification system (to disable the lockscreen all together you need root). Just use any lockscreen other than the stock magazine one in the theme selecter.
The UI certainly is different. But imho customizable enough that it doesn't get in the way. This is android after all.

OK if you guys have root i have something to try for you. I had issues with the process of GMD gesture control. It was killed by the battery saving tools implemented in this phone.
So I tried freezing certain system apps through titanium to find the one responsible for closing the background process and I think I found it:
It's a process/app called "power genie". I disabled it and now the process sticks. Also I made gesture control a system app, so maybe it's a combination of the two things.
It's not the same issue as you had but maybe it works for you too.

So does this method allow for notifications to come through without having firstly opened the application then going to home-screen with it still open?

You'd have to try that out for yourself because I never had any issues with notifications coming through and I use third party software (Nils) for lockscreen notification.
What I described is a method that prevents a Huawei "power save" service called power genie killing background processes. No guarantees though, I had issues with gmd gesture control not working after a few minutes and I had to constantly open the app to make it work again. Then I froze power genie and since then it worked 100%.
So it's just my theory that it might stop other apps/processes from being closed as well.
I still dont get notifications coming through via the official gmail app, i might trying that power genie freeze, since any app thats not Huawei wont come through as a notification and thats when I give the app full access.'
I'm not sure if this is worth a try, but there's an option to 'ignore optimisations' on a per-app basis.
In settings > Apps > Advanced > Ignore optimisations > All apps
I've instructed to ignore optimisations for Dash, an app with a background service that launches the app upon connection to my car's Bluetooth OBD. I'll feed back if this has any impact, as I've noticed it doesn't auto-start the app on the Huawei P9 as it used to on my Nexus 5, despite 'protecting' the app in the battery manager.

If it's just Gmail, try deleting cache and data for the Gmail app and reboot first. My wife had the same issue just with the Gmail app a few days ago (on a galaxy s3 though).
Same issue with Instagram so I guess it's not only gmail

Malware/Antivirus Help

I wanted to know if you guys know any apks for malware or antivirus. I have been getting a lot of pop ups. I installed kapersky and malware bytes but they both do anything.
pop ups when browsing and or apps? Most likely you'll need ad blocking software and or browser extension.

It seems to be ad pop ups. I would be using an app such as whatsapp or watching a video through my gallery and the add just pops up out nowhere. it has never done that before.
If you get apps from places that are not "trusted sources" many of them have these pop up ads.
Go through and we which apps have Device Admin, Accessibility, and Draw Over Other Apps permissions
Are you using stock Gallery or another app?

Personally, I do not use any antivirus on my phone. I tried some of them before but finally gave up due to the large consumption to the phone memory which results into a slowdown of system and a faster drain of power. Plus, the major drawbacks of these free AV, like Avira, Kapersky, Bitdefender and more in Top 5 Free Antivirus in 2018, are the ads and popups bundled with them. They keep sending annoying ads and pop-ups during running, and even worse, sometimes they downloaded and installed things automatically.
Thus, if you download apps from playstore, surf the safe websites and connect to a clean outside device, do not bother to install a AV on your phone.

so l read this thread awhile back and thought nothing of it ............ until now!
I have "developed" the same Issue! and yes Its definitely an app that has access to "appear on top" and its under Apps> special Access> apps that can appear on top! Now for me to identify the culprit......? only issue though is if you have this issue your most likely the kind of user who experiments and installs several apps at once.... so here goes my trial by elimination process?
Hi had this problem.
I deleted the free APK that I had installed but I was still getting pop ups.
You need to go to settings / apps and right at the end of the list there was a app with no name or app logo.
Deleted it, problem solved.
I tried virus scan apps and nothing found it.
Hope this helps

Yeah that's exactly what I saw on my list.
No AV will block an ad. They block known, to them, malware apks. Use something like Addons Detector from G Play store and/or Nice catch from S Galaxy store to list all the apks that have ads modules and then remove those you installed last or don't recognise or need.
Run Malwarebytes.
