I would advice you to wait for official release mate
Right now there are couple of very good ICS ROMs but there is also a risk of bricking your note because ICS leaks kernel are somewhat faulty
Better safe than sorry

I agree. Hearing all the issues, not even about bricking frightens me. Although for those who have successfully installed ICS on the Note, I do envy you because stock android looks amazing! However, once official ICS is released by Samsung devs would prefect stock ICS I bet. =P
I have just come back to stock after using ICS ROMS.
I encountered a lot of problems such as:
not being able to transfer files from pc to note.(i had to take out SD card and use an adapter).
Phones rebooting randomly alot.
When trying to flash in recovery, the flashing procedure kept on freezing.
I think it is safe to stay on stock, where you will be problem free until official ICS release.

I've never had any of these problems that you mention. I don't think most users have either.
Can't transfer files? USB storage is now native to most ICS ROMS.
Random rebooting? Sounds like a personal problem to me.
Flashing in recovery and freezing? Okay, yeah that's a common problem...but it's an easily fixed problem, and it mainly comes about because you don't have proper root to begin with.
There's also some evidence recently that a few ICS kernels can cause permanent emmc (internal storage) failure that can not be revived. So yes, you probably shouldn't be flashing ROMS to begin with, as it sounds like you don't have much experience. This would put you in over your head for sure. It's best to wait until you've lurked around the boards for a bit and to wait for a stable and official ICS base to come out. Best of luck!

Personally am sticking to my current setup (ICS Stunner 1.4.19 + LP6) mainly because I have absolutely zero issues so far with great battery life, why fix something not broken? but also because of the recent news of the faulty kernels

man when i read that i was like dam that is not a joke, and bing bang boom back to GB darky 3.4.1 rom is the greatest, as sorry ICS leaks does not worth it with all its problems it already has and now this scary threat of bricking my device due to kernels in those leaks, no way i am on GB again until an ics official release
how many of you did the same , and which rom did u go back to and why
thanks god i did not brick my device, and never ever will i jump into any leaked roms that are not first officially released
I went back to Stock + rooted (PC Odin flash) from ICS stunner (which is a great ROM btw) after reading about the risks of the leaked repack kernels from Entropy512, not to mention the various horror stories by those less fortunate than myself.
There but for the grace of God go I...
I'm going to go for the CM9 version once its a bit more mature (looks really good already on build #3), or wait until a safe kernel is brought into ICS Stunner.
The official ICS might even come out soon...not holding my breath though

I've flashed many ICS ROMs, but I was lucky as I stick to Redpill Recovery procedure of going back to GB and never tried anything with ICS kernels (well almost as I used their CWM Recovery to flash Abyss Kernel 4.2 with Redpill). I'm daily using CheckROM with jKay MOD + DarkyOTA (for easier modifications) and for now I'm happy with it. I've checked what ICS has to offer and now I'm waiting for official version.
There is no need to stick with GB ,I just upgraded from GB to cm9 for the first time
Cm9 contains a safe kernel so you don't need to worry about flashing it .
Been on ICS for a week now
First on AOSP ICS 4.0.4 for awesome UI, next Criskelo ROM 4.0.3 for better speed.
So far so good!
Still doesn't die on me!!
Go ahead and flash it baby!
Dun be a wuzz!
Any recommendations for other ICS variants?
I am still on ICS Stunner and will stay on it. I dont see a reason for changing a stable system with awesome battery life and such great daily performance use.
Loved Stunner's roms but reverted back to GB because of the hard bricks.
Now running CheckRom V6 with AbyssNote 4.2 and Nemus Launcher. Very stable rom, fast and good battery life.
As soon as CM9 matures a bit or Stunner implements the open source kernel I'll probably flash back to ICS. Who knows, maybe Samsung will release ICS in a few weeks.
Sorry but I made a Poll here in Q&A in which I ask who hardbricked the Note with one of those kernels. Where are those bricked devices?
So far no user reported this in this boards section. At least I havent seen anyone.

While his advice is to the leak in general, I think it is VERY clear the problem (SO FAR) has ONLY been caused by the botched Kernel by Angelom and the 1 bad version of Stunner (before fixed).
No one (reported) has EVER been bricked by any other leak/ICS Build on the Note.
There is always a risk, it could happen again with another modified ICS Kernel Build, but it is my opinion based on plain common sense and the facts that no one is going to be bricked using the ICS Leaks currently being used by MANY and having never had a problem.

The problem resides in the leaked Samsung kernels that's the base of any and every custom ICS rom currently released in the dev section except for the CWM9 roms.
I've flashed a crapload of ICS roms in the past two weeks, I think I've been alternating between roms at least 15 times and wiped even more but that's absolutely no garantee that my luck won't run out at some point. The moment I've read the posts from people that absolutely know what they're talking about I reverted back to a GB rom. Waiting a couple of weeks for an official update beats not being able to use my Note.
Soft bricking, losing all your data, instability, battery drain, those are the 'normal' risks you should be prepared for when flashing any rom but hard bricking your device beyond JTAG repair is a major thing. It's a garanteed motherboard replacement and Samsung will not give you warranty.

You are wrong, there have been plenty.
I'm currently using Stunner with the DAFUQ kernel. Its kinda buggy but it still beats Gingerbread. Not gonna give up my precious tablet UI!
i am one of those suckers that got bricked by this issue. it is a risk when flashing experimental leaks. it sucks the big one but i knew this was a possibilty when i started flashing. it happened after i had flashed dozens of times with different roms and mods. you just have to suck it up and realize this is always a risk no matter what you are flashing or whether you have done this before or not. luckily i had everything backed up so i have not lost much except my note for a few weeks and maybe a couple of hundred dollars. i am still waiting for mine to be repaired.

very true man and same here.
was a very happy and heavy flashoholic in ICS untill the warning. Have been lucky sometimes by just switching to stock from ICS by Abyss kernel only not red pill even shutting down system instead of rebooting to Red pill. Lol but even after all this damm-i-may-be-hard-tym-screwed i was quite a lucky fella. Even ignored the kernel Warning by Entropy too, but lol man, a comment by a user in stunner that even copying a file more then 200mb to the Note can also fry your system, dammm i was like stoned. Even didnt tried it out against my such a good luck and bamm yesterday i was back to GB.
Even right now i am a happy flasholoic in GB by trying every version here and switching between them with a ratio of 2roms/day.
went back to RocketRom V23 myself today... will wait it out with CM9 mature versions.
I'm going to stick with ICS Stunner for the moment. I always flash Abyss and use RedPill for all 'Recovery' related things anyway.
I'm sure that soon all ROMs will be rebuilt without the leaked kernels and have all the features we currently have but, until that time, I'll keep using the leak based ROMs.
It would bother me, taking a 'step back' to protect myself against something that 'might' happen.
This is all personal preference though, I certainly do not advocate or recommend that anyone do the same as me.
Hey guys im SGS2 user my friend has Note i tried installing ICS based custom roms on his note but they all got stuck at boot screen but the GB based roms are working fine . What can be the problem ? Do i need to do anything special before installing an ICS rom ?

thanks in advance
I flashed to CM9 by Xplod, its very much usable in daily usage for me. And its beautiful and fast.

Only way I could get it to work was with a wipe / reset in recovery mode after flashing the ICS ROM. I was on Stunner and booted fine after that.
I've been a bit put off by the eMMC rumours couple with being annoyed by some bugs in the versions I tried so I'm back on stock (rooted) and will wait for the pucker ICS release and then the good work the chefs will do with it!

I don't think anyone really KNOWS. Some have definitely had their phones bricked. Others who have been successful swear blind its noobs or people who rush without properly reading EVERYTHING that have had the problem.
My gut feeling is that there's no smoke without fire and it's telling that we aren't getting leaks or release ICS like we all suspected.
Just ask yourself, am I prepared to brick my $600/€600 phone for the sake of ICS which isn't that mind-blowing when the stock release is only a few weeks/months/years away?
hi everybody, now that Gingerbread roms development has almost stopped, here on xda we can find a lot of rom based on latest LC1 firmware. between all this rom i can't say which is the best one, so i'm asking you to give me some advices about your favourite rom.
i know you can tell me: "flash one after the other and try all ol them", but my note just came back to me after a month of assistance (bricked), so i don't want to start immediately flashing 5 or 6 roms.
P.S: i'm particularly attracted by "AllianceROM v3.4.1", what do you think about it?
Go for RocketROM v23. I guess its the best which i have used in GB So far

it looks like it's safe, but since when i see a post that tell every possibility of having bug has been cutted off, i don't want to risk.
I cannot decide which to try first myself: darky rom or lightening rom?
I know you asked for GB ROMs, but I can tell you that I've been playing with Official CM9 and Asylum for a while now. Have done almost everything possible in Recovery, including multiple full wipes.
These ROMs are safe, they don't have the emmc bug, since they're built from i9100 (S2) update 4 sources. I'm just saying that because stock-looking ICS ROMs have greatly improved my personal experience on my Note.
That being said, best and least buggiest ROM for me was Darky. RocketRom is very nicely built by eybee who REALLY knows his stuff and most users have given awesome feedbacks. However, due to my way of using it, or...I don't know, Rocket used to lag considerably compared to Darky...
Best of luck finding what suits you mate!

for what i can understand, choosing as your favourite darky, you can tell me thay alliance rom (the darky's evolution) would be your next gb choice? please tell me, so i can flash. i know i'm paranoic not trying to flash asylum, but after using nokia 6630 for a month, i prefer a gb note instead of even minimum risk of brick. thanks alot.

I understand that...
I suppose Alliance should be ok, it all depends on the way you use your phone... I've heard different reports on ROMs from different people, so...matters to find one suited for you. If you want to switch, make sure you carefully read the installation instructions, although most GB ROMs are a straight flash.
I'm sorry that we've had so many bricks around here...they're definitely enough to discourage any newcomer to Android or to flashing for that matter. This is my 4th Android phone and, to be perfectly honest, I haven't seen so many "bricked" threads on my other phones' forums.
I just wish people would've read a bit more carefully when installing...that's what got them stumbling into the emmc bug...
Best of luck and hope you'll find your way into some safe ICS soon enough
If you need any help, just let me know.
Hi all,
I've just received my new Samsung Galaxy Note, and am blown away by it, coming from a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. I was just wondering what features I gain/lose if I update to stock ICS? I have NO plans to apply a custom ROM, as the phone seems to do amazing without it, but would I lose any apps or abilities in Note's ICS compared to Note's GB?
Thanks!

I suggest that you stay with your GB rom for awhile unless you need the new samsung apps that can only run with ICS rom. You can get some info on ICS, GB, Bricks, Flashing etc... from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659768
You will not lose any apps or abilities.
Be careful with ICS update. If you want it - never use factory reset after you update. But since official ICS is TouchWizzed and look/work almost exactly as GB, it's not worth it right now, better to wait till Samsung figures it out.
And for my personal opinion:
I really recommend rooting your GB Note and flashing CM9 via CWM, this way you'll make your Note even more amazing and make it work "iphone-smooth".
If your GB version is one of the lc1 one of the best GB out there stay on it. A small lose without ics for now to many risks with the highest to destroy the motherboard of your phone so for now I would suggest stay with GB and stay tuned on xda forums for news when it will be safe to update to ics.

If you want ICS, go through CM9 or any CM9-base.
For now, stay away from Samsung's official ICS roms. Not worth the hassle, fear, headaches, etc.
If you want to stick on GB, stick to LC1 GB with Speedmod's GB Kernel. THat's also pretty damn awesome.
What do you loose.... Your whitts end, because your phone won't keep it's charge as well or not being able to adjust brightness from the status bar.... Haha

xD Thanks ALOT for all of your answers, cleared alot!
So I guess it's safe to say ICS ruins battery life, which is something I depend upon.
I was just wondering about what Braxos was saying, how would I check if I have the lc1 GB version?
Thanks!
go to settings then about phone, then look at kernel information. It should state there which version you have.
I also have LC1 - Just downloading ICS now to flash in ODIN, Im a little unsure after reading this thread lol, I know the brickbug is very serious and im trying everything to avoid it.
the only downside is that LC1 is unrootable, So how do we root it if we want to keep it ?

Hello fellow earthlings!
My friend has a SGS, and it is still running the stock froyo 2.2.1. It is not rooted nor has any history of hacking. She asked me to update her phone to CM10. Can anybody tell me where to start and what to do? Any links? Or are CM10 roms stable already?
I would be grateful for anyone willing to help me.
Are you sure that's a good idea? Despite what everyone might tell you CM10 isn't exactly stable yet. If you update it for her she might have to rely on you to fix her problems all the time since she didn't learn how to update it herself.

Well, this might be a reason to do the upgrade
My experience:
I had a 2.3.6 stock GB. It was very good but sometimes I noticed problems (lagging, app force closes, etc.). Not much, but I got annoyed and secondly I wanted to know what is all the hype around the CM. So I flashed CM9. Very nice, smooth, same battery life, but missing some of the applications, TouchWiz and got some errors as well (see this). I do not have much time (and experience either) to flash every day and I want a stable system, so I will not go for CM10 for some time.
Was it a good idea after all? Yes and no. I had to reinstall everything (CM9 uses different file system, some apps do not remember its settings, etc.), had to look for a new launcher (a word I did not know existed ) had to sort out birth illnesses. On the other hand I received a new system, a new experience and I know that if I would perform a system change it will be an upgrade to CM10, not a downgrade. Possibly I might do even a sidegrade - switching to a different developer. But obviously I will stick with the most known brands (AOKP, MIUI).
Hope I helped you.

you should and must update it to the latest firmware for your phone , which is gingerbread 2.3.6
so you have two options....
1) use KIES and let it do the job for you
2) use Odin3 and flash the latest Gingerbread ROM for your region from here or here
you must have this for any upgrade...so do this first and and see, how it suits you or her
