Charging the note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right now something strange is happening, I use my nokia 1.2A charger but the note barely charges
Just going 18%-20%... I use abyss kernel and darky rom.
I know power consumption is big enough but to equal to the charging?

I often use my old iPhone charger as a travel one and experience the same thing... Both that and Note charger have similar specs.
The phone probably detects if the original charger is connected somehow and only enables fast charge mode in that case.
I seem to remember some custom ROMs have an option to enable fast charge, so it could be that.

Slow battery charging, battery tips?

I'm a recently new owner of the note. One of the first things I noticed was battery issues.
First, it seems as though my battery charges exceptionally slow regardless of whether I charge through a mains outlet or my computer. There have been times when I am charging and playing a CPU-intensive game and my battery power actually goes down, and once as a test I brought my battery to 4% and then let it charge overnight, and woke up to it at 90%.
second, I am running it rooted on the stock rom (kk4 I think?) and I am wondering if there are any system tweaks that improve performance and battery life, such as build.prop modifications. I am not a new Android user so I already know about reducing brightness, managing push services, all that stuff.

Note takes almost 4 hours to charge 100%. i guess you are using original Note Charger. Try flashing any new kernel and new ROM.
So it's because of the original charger? I still have my Dell Streak charger that outputs through USB, and I remember if I charged through the mains it would go much faster, though I am unsure of it's safety. As long as it's USB there's no risk of it frying my note, is there?
I sort of want to hold off on flashing a new rom until ISC becomes available in a mostly-working state. I am sure there are a few entries in build.prop that all the custom roms use?

The only risk is Amperage. A Dell Streak wall wart spits out 5V DC at 1A current. I use the very same to charge my Note, with no issues at all. I am unsure what the stock Note wall wart spits out as, to be honest, I never took it out of the packet. I would hazard a guess that it would be identical to the Galaxy S II charger at 0.7A, though. This would explain the slower charging rate you're noticing.
It may be a purely superstitious thing on my part, but I never charge mobile devices with anything over 1A of current unless they specifically require it.
I have a 2A wall wart at home that did crazy things to an old Desire (warmed the back very noticeably and subsequently impaired the battery's ability to hold charge). It's for this reason I stick to 1A, plus I find it quick enough for my liking.
Best of luck with a solution
I use the stock charger. It is 1A. It also charges quite slowly compared to some. There is a lot of juice needed to fill the Note's battery. Unlike some 1200 or 1600 mAh, it takes 2600 mAh. That takes time, is all.

BTW using the Note, especially for gaming, can drain the battery faster than the charger tops it up. It appears the Note does not (or cannot?) draw anything from the power input to leave the battery to charge. The result is not a good or fast charge IMO.
I would not recommend doing this often as it tends to stuff up the metrics and give false readings in my experience.

Your second point especially is very valid. This wouldn't be the first device unable to 'keep up' with juice demands while flat out

Personally, I prefer a slow charge to a fast charge. Less chance of heating up the battery.
A 2 amp charger can charge the note slightly faster (the iPad charger for example)

slow charge is a perfect charge.

How is that when the kernel only allows 1A.

not sure how is that, all i can tell you is that i compared charging from 0 to 100 with the original charger and with a 2 amp one. Original charging time was 3:35, while the time with the 2 amp charger was just under 3 hours.
Remember also that a standard USB 2.0 port allows a max of 0.5A: "A device may draw a maximum of 5 unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 2.0" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus
So when you charge the note using a PC (or a MAC) the process takes twice as long compared with wall charger. And if you're using the Note during the charge usually it won't charge at all, because it requires more power than it is supplied by USB port.
The note uses a Summit smb136 to charge... That chip can handle up to 1400mA in, and 1500mA to the battery. I don't have my Note yet to tinker much with the kernel sources, but I've worked with this chip on the galaxy tab 7.0 Plus (and have it doing some interesting things.)
Examining the source, it appears that the chip is being limited to 950mA from the wall charger and 500mA from all other sources. Depending on how it's detecting the charge source, it's likely limiting to 500mA for all "unknown" charging sources. (I'll investigate that after I've had the note for a couple days and get a feel for it.)
It should be easy enough to modify the kernel to allow more power draw from iphone/ipad chargers... and even to open up USB charging some more (but there's a risk involved with drawing too much current from a source than isn't designed for it. I've killed a netbook's usb port that way.)
Take care
Gary

In car charger problem.

I am lucky enough to have a note n7000 that doesn't suffer from any Wakelocks or battery issues.
I have 4.0.3 stock ROM installed, rooted with speedmod kernel 3-7 and carbon tweaks installed.
Phone runs great and gets a quadrant score around 4300.
I got an in car USB charging adapter. It is 5 volt 1 amp. The adapter came with a USB cable and I used that to charge the phone while on a 2 hour journey using GPS navigation and the battery was drained completely despite being plugged into the charger. Battery shows lightning bolt symbol and phone beeps to show that charger is plugged in.
I also left the phone switched off and plugged into the charger in the car for about 3 hours but that didn't charge the battery at all.
Any idea why it doesn't work?
Also real football 2012 used to work great on my phone but now it just won't load. I tried reinstalling but it still won't load up. Any idea why that might be??

It could be the charger or the lead - I presume the phone charges ok from the mains.
I have one USB lead that wont charge my Note if I'm using it at the time {battery capacity goes down), and I expect it's down to low cable quality with not enough copper so too high a resistance dropping too much voltage.
The best way is to test by substitution.
I think note requires 3amp car chrger

I9305 Taking Forever to Charge

My sister got the GT-I9305 a little while back. Usually, she takes quite a few hours to charge it fully, about 7-8 hours. However, recently, it got worse. The phone has been sitting at 37% for over an hour now, and it is still stuck at 37%! I've searched for other threads on this issue but they didn't really solve my issue. It seems really weird that the battery hasn't even turned for the better(or the worse) after over an hour.
Anyone has any insight on this? Thanks a bunch!
P.S. Everything was off except for Power Saving mode and the mobile signal.
use a different charger, cable, port
i own that phone and i have to say that the charger is very weak 1000mAh charger for 2100mAh takes a lot i currently use my nokia's charger it has1200mAh and that makes a huge difference,my friend's uses nokia lumia's or of you have a recent computer you might have a supercharging port that provides much more power,
Hi everbody.
I use 2 different chargers, one from my tablet BQ Maxell Plus, other from another cellular...
NEVER had issues charging my I9300, with stock rom or other one....very fast and until 100%.
NEVER used the original one, but looking at it, is a joke of charger.....
Values: All debitate 5V, and 0.1 and 0.2 Amperes.
You must take in consideration other factors like electronic heat dissipation, filtrate, stabilitie, etc,etc with it seens not works well with the original one....
Who says that bigger ins`t better?:good:
1000mah is more than enough, must be a charger /cable problem

you guys are using capacity units on a charger. Chargers don't have any capacity, they have current, which is measured in amps, not amp/hours. So S3 charger would be a 1000mA or 1A, not 1000mAh
Never had a problem with the original charger. Charge time more than decent

right ^^ it's 1A and 1.2 A
Try disabling USB debugging if its on. Its in developer settings.

how can that have an effect on the charging current?
On some cyanogenmod 10.1nigthlies versions it has problem with charging takes forever with oem charger, i am now on sentinel rom 4.6 it has same problem. Just use usb port from computer or some media player. It charge to full in maybe 5 hours from usb port, i dont remember excatly.
I agree the S3 Lte does not have the same speed in charging as the 9300 I use to own even though the chargers are the same, even different roms don't solve the issue, need a custom kernel to up the charging current that was available with the i9300 to reduce charging times

Charging Issues, special cable and charger needed

Just picked up this phone and I love it. On stock 4.1.2 I have charging issues where the phone will only charge with a very good charger capable of putting out >1A and a beefier cable.
Which rules out charging from computer and some shoddier chargers. This is a deal breaker for me.
I will go ahead with rooting and upgrading OS to custom, if someone can verify that this will be a non issue after completing that? Thanks.
Edit: further when streaming netflix and charging, the chargers can't keep up with about 30% screen brightness. Will also be resolved?
how many chargers don't output 1a or greater these days? im using a htc hd2 charger that's nearly 4 years old and a generic usb cable and have no issues charging the phone

Well for the second point I'm even using a 2A charger and and its charged 3% in 2 hours, with netflix, which seems more like a software issue.
and have you rebooted the phone? I had issues like that on my old galaxy note, a reboot often fixed it due to other processes and apps running in the background
I also am struggling to find a decent cable to charge my phone with.
The supplied cable charges it very quickly, but is a little too short to comfortably use the phone while it's charging.
I have purchased a couple of longer cables that seem to be of decent quality (24 awg), but the time to charge the phone fully increases dramatically when using them.
This is all when using the supplied charger.

Tried the reboot, still the same issue. I think I've realized the problem and it looks like software.
I have a kill-a-watt meter. With screen on, and netflix streaming, for some reason its only drawing 3.3W. @ 5V this is only .66A. Clearly too low to charge with. However when I turn the screen off, after a few seconds draw goes to 8.2W, ~1.6A. Now I'm not concerned with staying on the stock OS, however do people still have trouble with this on custom OS?
Sweird...I've never noticed any slow charging on my 6606. I've used a few old chargers from HTC , nexus and Samsung. My Motorola Bluetooth charger however doesn't charge very fast at all but I'd expect it not to.
Its not the best to use ur phone to much while charging tbh. It might kill u battery quickly and damage the phone itself.

note charger

im using galaxy wonder charger to charge my note phone but it charges very slow ... i tried to charge using usb wire connected to a laptop and it was faster ... if i get another charger whould the charging be faster or not ?? and what type of chargers should i get for my phone ?
Hi. This was asked before, try searching.
One thing I've noticed when I had the stock rom on my Note was the insane amount of power the Note took, the bad charging cable, and stock charger. Never was able to charge it while it was on. I ended up getting a heavy duty charge cable and a 1 Amp (1,000 mAH) charger. Charges much better now.
