Best method to root my SGN? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Afternoon all,
I've got a Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 and the about phone screen shows:
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: N7000XXLA4
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341 [email protected]#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXLA6
First things first, I would like to root and I've looked around XDA / Google and found a couple of different methods. Which one is best and ensures I lose no functionality?
Many thanks all.
Rob

If you don't want to spend time downgrading - then again upgrading, simply flash rooted stock rom from pc odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025

So I download this the file I've highlighted in the .png attachment.
Then use ODIN to flash the 3 files on the phone and then I have fully rooted phone with stock ROM and kernel?

Yep, easy as that. After that you can flash Chainfire's CF Kernel for that rom (so you'll need the LA6 version of that kernel) if you want CWM Recovery and flash custom roms. If you just want root then you're done after you flashed with Odin.

may i know, it after rooted SGN, will i be able to upgrade to ICS via kies, or i have to flash back to stock GB.

You probably will lose root if you use kies.

use the zerg rush method, as flashing with odin will rise your binary counter and you will lose your warrenty, and i heard that if you flash any rom with odin even if it was stock one, you will lose the ability to update your phone from kies, for me updating from kies is useless as it will wipe your date and will take so long, i flash stock roms using odin because its faster and doesn't wipe your data

According to the thread where I downloaded the ROM from above I didn't need to worry about the flash counter. Can anyone confirm if this goes up or not?

Using a complete stock ROM will not increase your counter..also using Mobile Odin and recovery to flash won't..
The only thing that will increase your counter is flashing custom ROM and kernel through PC Odin..

So I can assume that because I used PC ODIN to do this update I've increased the flash count by one?
Is there any way to reset it?

Not if you flashed stock samsung rom.
To reset triangle and custom binary count,
Wait for official ICS then use Triangle Away.

Chinese ICS Leak to Official ICS Query?

Hi all, just need sme advice as I've done a lot of reding tonight but still unsure how to proceed.
I have a UK Galaxy Note, originally unlocked stock Samsung.
It currently has the original chainfire repack of the I9220 chinese leak (http://download.chainfire.eu/146/CF-Root/SGN/CF-Root-I9220_ZC_OZH_LP1-v5.2-CWM5.zip) from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500186
I'd like to flash the official N7000OXALPY ROM on it now.
My question is, can I use mobile odin to apply the german ICS ROM directly?
I believe I may need to flash a GB ROM first? If that is the case could I do this via mobile odin?
Unfortunately I don't have a nandroid of the GB ROM i was on before to restore (I've learnt my lesson!).
Thanks!

Here is what i did. I flashed N7000CPWLB2--United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse) using PC Odin, download link from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997. I then root and used PC Odin to flash the german ICS. I did full wipe afterwards in recovery. You don't get CMW with this approach but i don't need it.
With regards to the second link, do I have an i9220 bootloader now from the chainfire repack? (not sure how to confirm this).
I'd like to follow the instructions from dr.ketan but bit unsure if it's safe?
If you have flashed LP5 Repack then you have i9220 bootloaders ! If you have flashed the LP1 repack then you are without those bootloaders
Hackerboi, its the LP1 ROM. Does that mean I can use dr.ketans guide directly to flash the official ICS via mobile odin, or should I still flash a GB rom with odin first?
I was on TMT 1.0, what I did was flash a direct rootable ROM using PC Odin, root the ROM, flash stock LPY ROM using the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 and that's it.

Flash NOTHING from Repack, be it with Mobile Odin or CWMR.
Use PC Odin to get to GB first. Then you can proceed to ICS.

Thanks for all the help guys, successfully on the official rom now.
I did the following:
1. Flashed CPW rootable old gb rom using PC odin.
2. Rooted using zergrush
3. Flashed new ICS rom and chanfire kernel using mobile odin

Just did that exact same way myself - I always flash back to stock with PC Odin, and then re-root. Takes longer, but less hassles!

ahh this is cranky.rooted but read warning for kernel bug do what now?

i am form india and i have just updated my note to ics through odin.
now i have rooted it with dr ketan guide but havent flash cwm?this is different from ohter phone?then i read that bug kernel that can permenantly make my phone dead so what should i do to get cwm???
my kernel version is 3.0.15-n7000DDLPA-CL711285.
what will be the next step?is it must for me to change kernel and how will i get cwm?i read read and reread that post but little confused.
Install Mobile Odin and flash your kernel of choice through there - I did the same yesterday, Updated to 4.0.4, rooted with Dr. K's Temp CWM to inject SUperSU and then used mobile Odin to Flash SpeedMod K3-11..
Just remember DO NOT WIPE / FACTORY RESET on STOCK ICS Otherwise you will brick your phone..

And also never do any nandroid restore on unsafe kernel.
If you scare about the hardbrick issue, just follow dr.ketan method to unroot the phone.
If you wanna more secure, download any stock ics rom from sammobile.com and flash it thru pc odin. It wont give you any binary count increase and yellow triangle.

Some Kernels are "Safe" to wipe on (SpeedMod/NoteCore etc) - I personally always downgraded to GB to do wipes / factory resets.
I believe there's a Mobile Odin Lite on this forum - you can grab it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899

But - there are usually full instructions on the ROM threads so as long as you follow those you should be ok

[Q] [i9000] [SOLVED] Upgrade to CM7.2.0

Here is my question: I have a SGS i9000 with froyo 2.2 stock and cf-root, by flashing cf-root i gained obviously root but also the recovery 2e that should be without signature verification. Now if i want to install CM7.2 can i just install it via recovery 2e by renaming it update.zip? or i will brick the phone? On Cm official wiki page about installing they say you need to have gingerbread installed but i'm on mac and i can't flash a gb rom because heimdall is not detecting the file, i also tried with a linux partition on my mac but it did not worked. to get root i used first z4root and then mobile odin to flash cf root with recovery 2e.
thanks in advance to who will help me!
PS: I also have a I9001(see signature) but the phone for wich i'm asking is a i9000!

download KIES for Mac from My Android collections link below, and upgrade your phone to Gingerbread 2.3.6 (KIES will do it automatically) than root it with a semaphore kernel to get CWM, before going on to ICS and than to JB...should be done in this manner , do not jump from GB to JB ( you will have less problems)

ok i will try it, but kies from samsung site is not working at all. and moreover i have this problem, i just want to go from froyo to CyanogenMod 7.2 (android 2.3.6 GB). without any intention to go to ICS or JB. Second thing, if i manage to update from kies then heimdall is going to recognise it? Because if not i can't flash semaphore. Last thing i should uroot the device to update from kies right?
Many thanks for your help!
new information: I have installed your version of kies, and it finally recognise the phone, but it say that the device do not support update via kies, what can i do? thanks
Second edit: i researched and now i know the problem is that i cf-rooted my phone. so how could i revert? to cf-root i have used mobile odin after gained SU with z4root. i would had avoided to flash that if i had know that today kies were to recognise my phone! please help me lso if it was a noob mistake.

Ok, since you have installed KIES and working , heimdall should also be working, IF not you can download a latest heimdall mac version, from earlier link to update to ginger bread 2.3.6, before CM..also backup efs. contacts, images etc first, IF you have CWM, you can even do a nandroid backup, before any upgrade .
Always best to do progressive upgrade as it will not complicate the upgrade by jumping from froyo to CM ( which is a custom ROM) . Best to READ the developers Flashing guidelines before upgrade too.
Flashing the gingerbread ROM will automatically remove your earlier CF root, just download your original Firmware for your region from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 , than use a semaphore Kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908 this will give you root plus CWM for you to upgrade to CM 7.2
Do not jump, as you need Gingerbread bootloaders for upgrade to CM

Ok the problem was with froyo secondary bootloader, that is not recognised by heimdall if connected to a mac, nor to a VM Linux on the same mac. so i had borrowed my neighbour's netbook with windows 7. installed heimdall there and everything went smoothly. Firstly i have flashed a new GB rom, 2.3.6, the newer eropean one, then flashed CF-root for that rom with integrated CWM 3.x.x.x. The only problem was that when i flashed from cwm CM7.2.0 i hade a boot loop, so i had to swith off the fone by long pressing the power botton, then i booted in recovery, now the recovery was cwm 5.x.x.x so i wiped data/factpry reset and wiped cache, from the new cwm 5.x.x.x reinstalled CM7.2.0's zip and the latest gapps, booted again and everything went smooth from there.
Thanks for your help!

[Q] How to get stock kernel

I am running stock 4.0.4 with hydracore kernel.
I am getting the OTA update but cannot install.
how can i get back to the stock kernel without flashing the stock rom via pc odin ?
You got 2 options...
1. Download the stock ROM on your PC and extract the kernel (zImage) and flash it after
2. Download Chainfire's stock CF-Root kernel from this link- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784 and find the kernel that matches your ROM (on your region.

Download stock kernel for your rom from here and then flash using mobile odin or K-tools. I have done it many times using mobile odin and it even retains root.
But there is still no guarantee of OTA, I was on stock LR6 with stock kernel with mods and OTA failed everytime, now flashed GB and updating to LR6 via kies to use OTA.

Most often it will.. since your using PC Odin.. but there's nothing impossible as long as you root your phone back and use ChainFire's TriangleAway app to remove the counter back to 0.
EDIT: Yes, MOdin can flash Zimage as well.. try to look for some of the answers here as well -->>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1713289
Flashing anything which is stock should not raise custom count, same way as flashing stock firmware using pc odin doesn't. but why take chances when you can flash it using mobile odin or K-tools easily.
I even once flashed stock kernel using Doomlord's tool (used in CF root kernels to root and flash , it didn't raise the custom count.
Just put zimage on root of SD and flash by MO or ktools, easy. Modin can handle zimage and tar both.

that 1st link is the safest and best.
download the rom of. your choice. It. doesn't need to be of. your region. although you can check the latest firmware on www.samfirmware.com....
Once downloaded, use pc odin with the downloaded rom tar.md5 file selected in the pda tab. The connect the phone to pc in download mode and press start.
If you are upgrading to ics, then do not do any wipes, first flash a safe kernel...

Thanks for replying. Good to know that that thread is safe, but what do you mean by flashing a safe kernel? Those terms mean nothing to me.
theres two way to flash ROM. 1 is using PC ODIN and the other one is CWM
Flashing Via PC ODIN .. you need to have two thing.. The Rom You Want to flash and the PC-ODIN software
Flashing Via CWM.. you need two things. You need to root your phone and you need to install CWM.
every rom comes with modem, kernel (the file that govern how to handle your phone cpu), csc... the kernel inside ics is known to have brickbug
theres no need to flash kernel if you are flashing Rom via PC ODIN... Flashing kernel is when you are using CWM....

So, I can just flash any ROM using ODIN, and there will be no risk bricking my device?
If I flash a ROM, will I have a fresh install, and will my kernel also change so that I don't have the brickbug anymore?

yes you can flash any ROM using ODIN safely without bricking your device.
yes you will have a fresh install. your kernel will change too. as for the brickbug....
If you flash via PC ODIN then everything is stock to what you flashed.the kernel the firmware the csc the modem..all as stock provided....
1.If you flash ICS via PC-ODIN then your kernel also would be stock ics kernel that has brickbug..
Warning :
Don't wipe anything from stock ICS recovery
Don't factory reset/Hard reset on stock ICS.
Don't flash any Wipe version of ICS ROM
let say you want to flash Latest JB Rom but you are on ICS stock.
first thing you need to do is root your device ...install CWM.. Flash safe kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
let say ive rooted... installed CWM with safe kernel...
what i always do is everytime i want to flash new rom whatever rom it is...i flash Speedmod 3-15 (safe kernel) and go to Advance>reboot recovery and flash any rom i want so that im on the safe side without worrying what kernel im on.
2.If you flash GB than your kernel will be GB kernel which is safe to wipe..
if you want to flash custom rom from gb then you root your device and installed CWM and Flash since GB kernel is safe.
but.. let say u flashed ICS and wanted to go back to GB. then you are not safe anymore,,, that is why i always flashed Speedmod kernel 3-15 (safe kernel) and reboot recovery (by going to advance>rebootrecovery) and flashed any rom... that way im always sure that im in safe kernel when flashing Rom
