So, is there anyway to save text messages when doing a full wipe and switching to a different rom? It may sound silly, but this is literally the only thing keeping me from trying a different, albeit obviously better rom than the one I'm currently using.
I use SMS Backup & Restore. You can have it schedule the backups as well. Love this program.

SMS back up is the single best solution but it doesn't do mms. None of them do that I now of. You could try go SMS but I would be hard pressed to suggest it. I would use handcent instead

SMS Backup+ will do SMS, your call log and MMS, and tidily back them up to a separate label in your GMail (handy for searching when you're at your PC). I've never had a problem with it, great app.

as will "MyBackup Root". Backup data (sms, mms, call log, system settings, dictionary, calendar, etc) and backup apps/media (photos, apks, app data, apks and data) I use it regularly

To GMail? Not so much. And it's a bit over-the-top as far as an 'SMS backup' tool goes.
And unless they've changed how it works, your online backups (pro only) are hosted on the developer's (very early-2000s-looking) website, no? If you're looking for a general backup app, you'll find more recommendations for Titanium Backup, which will do everything you mentioned with the bonus of working with fairly standard cloud storage (Dropbox).
Edit: Although TiBu isn't free, so it might lose a point there.

OP didn't say anything about backing up to Gmail. And you don't have to do online backups, you can backup to SD (which is all I ever do, why waste the data?). I'm not a fan of TiBU, which is why i recommended this. You could have just said "Titanium backup also does this", and made your case for TiBU, rather than trying to debunk another app that works just fine. i was simply stating that it will do both sms and mms - one of the best parts about Android is that there are multiple ways to do everything
Thanks for the replies, I decided to just use SMS Backup, since I use Titanium Backup to cover everything else, and I don't have data anyways, so I need not worry about MMS's
Maybe I'm missing something but I didn't see it mentioned yet... I use the backup feature included in the stock HTC Sense messaging app. This is the most obvious method (no additional apps needed) and I've never had any issues.

What the f*yay*... How did I miss that? Thanks for the heads up, I guess I just never saw it or something..
Most people dont mention it as they use custom non Sense roms and it doesnt work for restoring them to a non sense based rom.

You replied directly to a sentence of mine stating that SMSB+ backs up to GMail saying 'as will MyBackup Root.' Wasn't 'debunking,' or looking for a fight (honestly? getting defensive about backup software?), I figured it was worth clarifying your statement is all.
Also, re: backing up to SD, let me know how useful that is when you lose your phone or the card dies on you. Sure, you can back up your backups to another device periodically, but if there's a reliable option with fewer steps...

Can't figure this app out, I downloaded it and it said it backed up to Gmail. But that's it, I don't see anywhere in gmail where this back up is to make sure. Last thing I want to do is a fresh install only to find out the sms and call logs never back up.
Try sms backup & restore works good for me.

yeh just kinda figured it out... I've never seen/used this area of gmail was a bit confused and wanted to make sure. When you click settings on contacts it gives you all the options and in the left under compose it's hidden till you scroll over it, you can then click the logs, sms etc and shows everything. Cool.... I have a lot of important msg's I didn't want to lose lol.
And looks like it counts everything even though it says 95 95 for call logs and sms, each sms gives exactly how many messages were with each person.... which makes sense for the 2k+ number it said when backing up.

Got a replacement N1 from HTC.
Like with the first replacement, the Google "Backup" to transfer installed apps and settings does not work at all.
How can I either FORCE the "back up my settings" feature to work or is there a (FREE) alternative backup program that I can use?
well i dont think there's a way for call log and sms messages unless you use titanium backup. but what i do is use sms backup app (free) and call track (free) which run as a service at all times in teh background. sms backup sends all your texts to your gmail account in real time, under its own label, and call track sends all your call log to your google calendar in real time.
this week i needed to refer to an old text message, so i open gmail, find the sms label, and there is my complete text history in individual threads by contact in an IM style conversation, shows received and my replies. its brilliant. its a permanent record of all your texts and calls ever made.
i find when bouncing between ROMs and whatnot, that the only thing you lose everytime is texts and call log. everything else gets reloaded, like all apps get redownloaded automatically, settings get saved, bookmarks get saved, etc. so using those 2 apps basically saves me from losing anything.
EDIT: if you still have your old nexus, just install those 2 apps, and you can do a backup of everything now. it will take a little while to upload it all, but then from here forward just let those apps run all the time and you never have to worry about it again.
Thanks - I have been using call tracker. will try sms backup.
So how do I backup all my other settings (eg exchange, wifi, ringtone, ...) and apps?
As I mentioned in the OP, I can enable and disable Google's back up my settings however I want ... it just doesn't seem to work!

Is there any way to force Backup SMS to use names instead of [email protected] in the to/from (which is rather stupid)
SMS Backup & Restore app, as it says.
Call log Backup & Restore, as it says.
APN Backup & Restore, as it says.
All those back up the data to SD card.
All the rest is covered either by Google backup (if you check the "backup everything" on the old phone and don't check it when you setup a new one), or by Titanium backup.

For me WiFi is backed up by Google's backup. Ring tones are on the memory card. I don't use exchange.
Finally, a Google Voice SMS popup solution...
Background:
First off, I definitely care about this more than 99% of ppl out there, and have been looking for a solution for over 2 years, and have posted on countless forums, emailed probably 50 developers, created my own ghetto tasker solutions.. etc
I use Google Voice for ALL of my calls and SMS (using Google Voice App and GV Callback for calls), and have since it was GrandCentral. Given that, it's driven me crazy that there's no SMS popup option to work with Google Voice... since they don't have an open API, mainly. All other SMS apps like GO SMS, Handcent, etc make you use the random Google Voice contact number and mess up my threads.
Today, I finally found an app that will work with Google Voice and display a popup for incoming SMS along with the message (screen on or off).
by developer, ProductiGeeky
Notifier Pro
is the paid version, but the
lite version
also works if you want to test it out with limited features.
The developer has also released variants of basically the same app with very slightly different features called:
iPhone Notifications and WP7 Notifications
There are lite versions available for both. NotifierPro seems to include all features of WP7, but the iPhone Notifications app has a better toast popup dialog-- which is not available in NotifierPro. However, it (iphone) doesn't have the robust features available in the NotifierPro version.
You can read the app descriptions for more details, but here are some screenshots to get an idea.
In the app description, there is no mention of Google Voice compatibility. I've contacted the developer, and think he should make a variant with google voice in mind.
BTW, you can add notifications for virtually any app (like Gmail, messaging, email, GTalk, etc) with tons of other features. The major downside is, you can only use your default notification tone, despite the fact you can customize the vibration. In the screenshots, I'm using NotifierPro with the various themes that come with the app.
Some NotifierPro features include:
• allowing you to move the location of the popup
• adjust screen off > screen on popup settings
• set if you want it to appear as a banner or notification
• choose themes
• set sleep schedules
• set repeat notification reminders, etc, etc.
Screenshots of NotifierPro app (I'm using the paid Plus version, but free also works):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
iPhone Notifications version I mentioned
NOTE: If you're going to try this for Google Voice, it's best to turn off the audible notification in the google voice app (under Sync & Notifications) to prevent the double tone.
Hope you enjoy this as much as I do. It's got plenty of room for improvement, but it's an absolute step in the right direction.
EDIT: nothing to see here.

Lol, ya.. I did that. It's a baked in feature of Roman's AOKP ROM -- info thread is in the NS4G Dev section
Thanks for pointing this out!
I guess the themes only apply to NP?
EDIT:
Here's the one that's solely for GV: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nlucas.googlevoicenotificationslite
Mine doesn't seem to be working :-(
Been looking for better google voice support for a long time now.
This thread is a bit confusing though. If I want google voice popups, I just use https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nlucas.googlevoicenotificationslite
Not the notifier pro app, right?
I'll try this now. I'd still love a more full blown Google Voice support, something like Go SMS that worked with GV, but maybe this is a start.

+1 on that.
The Google Voice app didn't actually work when I tried it... However, NotifierPro (original post) and PopupNotifier (also from the same dev - https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nlucas.popupnotificationslite) both worked. It seems like there's an overlap in functionality but all of these apps are just slightly different.
Ya, its all the same dev- if you have feature ideas, I think he is watching this thread. He's been pretty quick and responsive

Unless you count Handcent, GO SMS, or any of those others, no, not that I've seen-- and since Google Voice has a closed API (as of now..and probably eternity), we probably won't see one. That's why I like to theme them
I used handcent for a while, but get annoyed that it ends up jacking up my contact numbers-- having to add an extra number for anyone I text, and only reflecting sms messages sent and received by handcent.

When I use Google voice notification, yes.
When I use Notifier, no.only a status bar notification comes up. But not a popup
When I do test notification, I got a white bar at the top with a test.
I don't get anything for incoming GV message.
What am I supposed to see for an incoming GV message? Just that same bar at the top?
Not really sure how that helps me too much. I still need to open the app to reply and clicking the bar doesn't even take you to GV or does it?
How exactly does this work?

I'm with you. With Sprint GV integration, Handcent etc work somewhat well but they aren't aware of the rest of my GV account/history. Switching between my PC browser and Handcent for a convo, for example.
These notifiers are a step in the right direction, but it's a little annoying that the notifiers don't get cleared automatically after I've read a msg or responded.
Baby steps though...

Did you select Google Voice from the other apps section in the settings? If you click on the banner notification, (in a real popup, not the test), it should take you to the actual message. I'm talking with the dev to work out kinks, and then hopefully build on that.
Wait, this is for the NotifierPro (free or plus version) . He pulled down the Google voice notification app because it wasn't working. One of the probs with GV not working internationally, as the dev can't test it himself.

Hey everyone,
So on the past few ROMs I've been using (Slim, CM9, etc.) I've experienced the same problem: on the stock messaging app, when viewing the list of contacts/numbers (not an individual persons messages), it does not show their messages—only my own.
So, for example, if I send Bob a text and he replies, the preview of the last message is my last message, even though he was the last person to text in the message list.
This wouldn't be a huge problem, but it causes the order of texts to be messed up. If I haven't texted Bob in months, his name will be far down on the list. If he then texts me and I clear the notifications, his name (and his new message) will still be far down the list, causing me to overlook it.
Can anyone give me some insight on what is causing this? It's extremely annoying. And I would love to fix it. Thanks!
You have probably already done this, but just in case - have you tried to backup messages with sms backup & restore, then delete all messages, clear data/cache, uninstall updates, etc. for Messaging (mms.apk).
Then restore messages from backup.
Because for me CM9 messaging app properly shows last message text in all messages/contacts view. Of course I've only some 40 messages from 3-4 contacts

Id try another sms app like handcent and see of that also happens. At least it will serve to see if its an app or internal message system thing. I never paid too much attention to that but i don't think i have that problem (i use handcent)
Actually, i always thought the standard sms app is very lacking and doesn't display the behaviour id like so id recommend replacing it anyway.

Hi,
I recently bought Galaxy SIII LTE and I have been using SMSBackupRestore for a long time in my old Desire;
When I was recovering all my old sms from my Desire to my SIII some sms threads were duplicated even triplicated after restore i.e. some of the messages were in one thread, others in another even though all sms were from/to the same number;
Has any one else have encountered the same problem and knows an application/Workaround in order to restore all SMS correctly?
Thanks
I had a similar issue when I moved from my Sensation to the 9300.
Cannot remember exactly what I did but I have a feeling it was deleting all messages (Clear Messaging Data) on the phone then restoring.
However I use SMSBackup+ so my solution may not work although we are talking a similar principal.
SMSBackup+ actually backs up to your Google Account so you can even see your Messages there. After trying several different apps I found this one to be the most reliable.
EDIT: Guess if you still have the Desire and the messages are all ok there then use SMSBackup+ to backup to your goolgle account then restore on the 9305. It is pretty slow to restore but not had any duplications since my initial issue which may have just been a glitch.

Thanks for your repply I will try your approach today
Just a warning that there seems to be no way of backing up or saving your messages from Text's AT ALL!
So if you just back the app up on titanium like I have been your fine... Until you want to switch SMS apps.
Then you'll find you can't export messages from Tetra to anything else. They seem to force you to stay with them!
Just a warning.

I think that's what the issue is and I've seen a lot of people mention on here that that's what they're doing (as I was), so thought I'd warn them.
You're backing up "Messages (SMS & MMS)" in Titanium Backup and not the Textra app itself, right?

Because Textra keeps all your messages when backed up and restored by titanium, I had been freezing the default meaning app on the last few ROMs I'd tried.
This was fine until I want to swap to something else.
The problem is, all my messages are in Textra, but you can't get them into anything else or back them up.... I'm stuck using it!
i juse easy backup app which backups my text , call logs etc to either the internal memory , dropbox or google drive . It does a restore as well. handles everything from setting the default app etc .

Nope, just tried it. It backs up Textra with messages in it (same as Titanium), but doesn't back up messages FROM Textra so you can put them in another app.
Thanks anyway though!
I think my messages are stuck with Textra.
Confirmed from the developer, there is no way to backup messages or export messages from Textra, so everyone make sure you backup up your sms separately or you will never be able to leave!
This isn't true. I just backed up my SMS from textra using SMS backup and restore from the Play Store.. Textra itself doesn't have the capability built into the app... I have used textra, hello SMS, evolve SMS and others and I am able to restore them all. This seems to be a case of operator error.

Edit: why is this in apps and themes?

It is user error because I backup apps with titanium backup and it'll restore all my messages and they even show up in the stock android sms app. Its annoying because I flash a bunch of roms and when i restore it'll show up in the stock messaging app and hangouts before i set textra to my default app. I've been backing up and restoring since november and it shows up on other apps when i restore with titanium backup.
Yes, but you guys clearly don't freeze or remove the default messaging app when using textra. I've read loads of people on here say they do and didn't want them to be in the same position I'm in.
You can backup from the default SMS app, and from every other SMS replacement app on the market, but not from Textra. That's from the developers mouth.
Well I haven't had any problems using Textra yet... I'm using it since I got my Nexus 5 in November 2013 and saw that Hangouts replaced the default SMS/MMS app.
In fact I'm not SMSing so much anymore and backing up SMS' ain't that important for me, but your post alarmed me a little. So I installed some of the other SMS apps from the Play Store. Every single app displays all the messages in my storage, so on my case it seems like I have a common SMS storage and I'm certain that Helium Backup & Sync offers to backup that storage.
Maybe that's an option for you?
Btw I'm running Stock 4.4.2 rooted with Xposed Framework enabled, just in case it matters

All that would do is remove my messages from Textra. I want to get the messages out and into hangouts but it won't let you.
I just deleted Textra app data and uninstalled. Installed Chomp and all texts were still there. Uninstalled Chomp and reinstalled Textra.
Hangouts, my only other installed sms app, has been frozen since day one.

That will be because you didn't freeze or uninstall the stock SMS app.
The lesson is, don't freeze or uninstall your stock SMS app if using Textra, or you'll never be able to move them to another app.

Oh sorry! Mis-read that!
Hmm interesting... So yours were saved on your system even though you were only using Textra. Then where mine have gone is a real mystery add they are in Textra, but nowhere else.
Thanks for info.
