Hello All,
I've read a lot of forums as to installing custom roms and I'm still lost. I haven't tried anything yet cause I'm too chicken to experiment and possibly kill my phone. Long story short, I still would like to install a custom rom to mainly get free wifi tethering.
I noticed in most of the forums that the only way to even begin the process is to downgrade to SPL 4.xxx. I don't have a restore point in Zuncee cause my pc crashed a month ago. Is the only way for me to downgrade from 5.xxx to 4.xxx, is by the goldcard method or is there a work around? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there,
I was in the same situation you are now! Last week on Tuesday I brought a HD7 from ebay and thought it would be as easy to install custom rom as my HD2.....after reading the forums here it was anything else! But still by Wednesday I had custom ROM on my phone (im using deepshining). The only method I tried and what worked was the Goldcard method. I made my own Y cable and followed the instructions on the Goldcard thread. I found this video on youtube quite useful as well!
Any questions just ask me ill try to help as much as I can. I did find it tough to work out at first but when you have a custom ROM installed its like a new phone!

There's nothing you can do, except gold card, it's safe and easy, no need to be afraid
Hi dcscorpio76,
I am currently also in the same boat as you.
I have SPL 5.12... and also want to downgrade.
I have no backup to revert to as i recently wiped my PC and never kept my old WP backups.
After lots of reading (and im still not 100% on the process so will likely read some more) I intend to downgrade my SPL and then flash an 'unlocked' version of UK trophy rom. From what i have read i think im going to have to use the 'gold card' method so i will be buying a few bits (cables, usb gender changer etc.) When i have all the things (i believe) i need i will write back here on what i do and where it gets me.
I have a £10 nokia that i still love and i wouldn't be all that bothered if i had to use it. Why not wait until i have flashed mine (over the next couple of days i think) so that you dont risk bricking your device that you may still rely on?
I dont totally dislike my WP, its just that i want to breathe a new lease of life into it. I would like to customise the UI and play with some homebrew apps.
One thing i dont really intent to explore is running apps that should be paid for in the marketplace as im a believer in paying a good price for good apps. So i wont be answering any questions on that.
If you have already gone ahead and tinkered i'd be interested in any info you may have.
Thanks

Alright guys,
So I am pretty much on the same scenario you guys are, I am coming from several rooted Android devices and expected this to be much easier
Here's my HTC info:
Name: HTC HD7
Model: HTC HD7
Carrier: T-Mobile
Software: Windows ® Phone 7.5
OS Version: 7.10.8107.79
Radio SW: 5.71.09.02a_22.51.50.21U
Radio HW: A.12.0.D4
Bootloader: 5.12.2250.0(135916)
I was reading this Thread but apparently I need to use a Y USB cable, in order to flash a Goldcard ROM since I first need to DOWNGRADE my Bootloader version. I am a bit more than lost when it comes to figuring out where to start. Just BTW: It is a stock build, the phone got the OTA update.
Ultimately I need to have a Custom ROM that supports Multiple Languages, as well as no carrier branding
Any suggestions, in plain english?

I am waiting for my HD7 replacement so might be in the same situation. Would it not be possible to enter bootloader and them flash pre nodo original rom?
Goldcard by viperbjk is the easiest and the safest method so far to downgrade our bootloaders....i was on 5.11 and I did the goldcard method and it went on smooth like butter!! I'm currently on bootloader 3.1(HSPL) and flashed the deepshinig v7.6 and I'm loving my phone right now
Just follow the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893152
Good luck! And happy flashing!!

It states in the relases notes that "Not vulnerable to the "one click root" exploit"!
Is he talking about Recovery Flasher that was just leaked/released.
Basically can i use Recovery Flasher and then Flash this Rom right after with No SPL Change or Radio Change From a Never Rooted Phone
What it means is that kernel was patched against this volunerability. You can flash recovery and then this rom but if you were to try using one-click afterwards it would not let you since cyan patched it. Shouldn't matter though cause if you're flashing this rom you already have root.
answer
He is talking about the kernel vulnerability that allows the one click rooting program to work.
If you don't have a rooted phone and have received no patches or security updates from your carrier, then you are able to take advantage of the vulnerability with the one click root program because if you will flash 4.0.1 after you exploit the kernel vulnerability.
I would suggest upgrading to the hard spl or engineering spl at the very least and the danger spl only if you plan to run a hero ROM. I would also suggest upgrading to the latest radio so you can take advantage of improved wireless capabilities (ie better reception, bluetooth etc)
Thanks Both of you im thinking of rooting but dont know if it would be worth it since last time i did i got a brick but i was so dumb and full of myslef after rooting i flashed the danger spl without upgrading the radio and just booted up my phone without going into recovery
Sorry Direct i found the semi relevant post to this one that you were helping out a bunch of noobs
No problem, hope you found what you were looking for somewhere at least.
You might want to take a look at nephron's latest guide. It is really n00b friendly, well written, and updated with all the latest tips and tricks that everyone has amassed since October and months of rooting/modding.

Omg awesome thread cover just about everything including sd partitons which is what ive been searching for thanks alot
Original question(s) seem to be solved.
Closing thread
First off I want to say that I know my way around a WinMo flash, reflash, nand breaking and all that jazz pretty well. But Android...not so much.
I ordered a G1 off Ebay recently, it has been shipped, but in the mean time, I was wanting to research the rooting and flashing process..It looks very involved...Very involved..lol
I've read the guides and such but was curious about the rom/radio bricking issues. With WinMo theres alot of radios..How about Android(My phone is an unlocked T-Mobile)?? Are there still known issues?? I like this rom http://lb.vg/fVl3w
Are the guides for rooting on here currently up to date(I think they are, and they probably are)?? Do I have to root to flash a new rom on there(I think I do)??
Sorry for the n00bish questions, but I really don't wanna kill my phone.
Can all bricks be fixed via the user??
Thanks
Edit: What is the situation of Flash?? What is supported??Is Hulu supported??
2.1 and 2.2 Froyo..Whats the difference??

First root (did it yesterday for the first time, phone was rooted when I got it).
You need root for certain apps, for installing another spl, custom roms.
Root installs recovery (if I remember ok).
Upgrade spl from stock to 1.33.2003 (zip file in recovery). Now you can use fastboot (safer!).Reboot in fastboot and flash first another recovery, then another radio (2.x) radio (needed for spl 1.33.2005), reboot again, go to fastboot and flash the dangerspl 1.33.2005 (or use MTDpartitions, but I got problems with it). Then flash roms.(no need for the old hardspl).
Flash not supported(arm incompatible).
Bricks can only be fixed with an JTAG, so be carefull (always wait) ! ROMS can't brick your device, only the officials can (which contain spl and radio).
Read for flashing the spl's (if you have rogers(canada) it's different).
Idk what this user means by saying that flash isn't compatible with the arm processor.
But yes android 2.2 supports flash all the way to flash 10 but on the g1 I don't think it would be so good on 528mhz because flash is pretty bloated on system resources. But flash videos are fine hulu runs fine for me.
Woops sorry about the double post I refreshed page and it submitted info twice. I did not see a delete function.
Should I do any sort of formatting or partitioning on my SD card or just let the G1 do it??
I've got an 8gig SDHC Class 4 card also.
I've also been reading about J-Tagging the G1..Theres an adapter on here http://miniurl.com/49008 and it's 20USD for the adapter but I think I have to heek it up to an Omnia Repair box..Is that right?? This video http://miniurl.com/49009 shows em hooking one up to a white box..and the only white box on there site is for the Omnia Repair one and it's 229 Euro's(304USD).
Does the first reply have the correct steps for rooting my phone?? Is that for all versions. I'm not sure if mines a R29 or lower.
Sorry for all the questions.
Thanks

Right guys, new to the phone and forum, not ROMs and flashing as I have moved from a Symbian operated Samsung, but new to the whole rooting and S-OFF stuff. Had a real good look around the forum, but can someone just tell me whether or not we can root and/or S-OFF the IS Seem to be getting conflicting info. Keen to get onto Gingerbread. If this can be done is there a definitive step-by-step guide? Tried the superoneclick method last night, but at 2am decided to give up!

The first step is to S-OFF the phone using AlphaRevX. There are several threads detailing the steps needed. Depending on which carrier ROM you currently have installed, you may need to create a goldcard so that you can flash a 'support' ROM that works with AlphaRevX.
After you gain S-OFF and the fact that you want to run a GB ROM, you will need to flash a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod. Here is a thread that details the steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694
There are enough posts and threads in the Development section to get you going. Just remember that the search button is your friend.
You're probably getting conflicting info, due to the timing.
AlpharevX was just released over the weekend. Any site or thread posted prior to that will probably say that you can't S-OFF.
As far as actually doing the S-OFF, I found the info in the link below to be quite helpful.

Thanks guys. I'm no stranger to the search function, but it was a bit confusing and just wanted to hear someone say it can be done!
Waiting to get a 16gb sd card and will give it a go then.
Brought the phone a couple of days ago....when can I expect the Gingerbread OTA?
im in uk and have had the update for some time now (id guess a month?)
a flashed rom is MUCH better
Have checked for updates and still nothing? Will wait for my 16gb card and give s-off and flashing a go. Came from a Samsung Symbian S60 phone so have had my fair share of experiance with flashing and custom ROMs. I would tend to recommend them also...made my life with Symbian almost barable. Cant go online with it now as battery nearly dead, which is pretty surprising as had it nearly 3 days now fully charging it every night
UPDATE:
Downloading the GB OTA now....woohoo. Maybe a silly question, but does it save to the sd card. Reason I ask is looking to upgrade to a 16gb card soon.
Also found a really good tutorial on how to improve battery performance.

A few weeks ago, I grabbed my HD7 out of the junk drawer and decided to grab one of the Mango releases in the Dev forum. I went through and performed all the recommended steps, and got it up and running. After an hour, I threw it in the junk drawer again as it had a ton of problems including:
- Random reboots during certain apps
- Lockups
- Sound cutting in and out
I figured that the ROM I grabbed had some major issues and decided to shelf it for awhile till some more stable releases came out.
Now, this morning .. I'm getting out of my car and I drop my HTC Sensation to the concrete which shatters the Gorilla Glass. So, when I get home today, I'm going to need to dig out the HD7 and get it up and running ASAP.
So, I need advice ... how do I get it from it's current Mango release to a more stable release, and does anyone have a recommended one?
Notes/Thoughts:
- I'm on T-Mobile if that matters.
- I don't mind going to retail Mango versus an unlocked one. It's about ease .. if I can force the Mango retail and not have to downgrade, then great. If I can do either without downgrading, then I would probably just grab a dev unlocked one and play a bit =)
- I can't afford to brick it since this is my only spare phone, so I prefer *less* risky steps to *quick but risky* methods.
Thank you for any advice you can offer!!
Update ... after reading a bit more, I still don't know what the right process is. I installed the RSPL/HSPL as a part of the additional update. I did that about 3-4 weeks ago when there were 2-3 Mango releases up on the forums here. I see a few posts that say that as of 9-30-11, you have to downgrade before upgrading and there are certain releases you can't upgrade beyond. Could someone elaborate by giving me a version of some sort and make it simple, such as
"If you are at X.XXXX HSPL or above, then you can't straight upgrade or it will brick, you will need to downgrade. Here is a link to the easiest way to downgrade first. "
Thanks!

Hello all. I have been researching for about 3 days regarding the upgrade of the G1 to the new radio 2.22.28.25 and Spl:1.33.0013d so I can install [ROM][CyanogenMod 7.2.0][The Official "KANGED" CM7 for DS][11/24/2011] FINAL!. I have HSPL10.95.3000 and radio 2.22.19.26I and android 1.6 . I seem to have a problem with flashing via fastboot as it gives error " remote : partiotion does not exist " . Furthermore, I tried flashing the radio via recovery but it said that my SPL is not recognized so it is best that I flash it via fastboot . What should I do? I am afraid of bricking the device and I cannot flash any rom with the current settings ( I presume ). Any advice will be really helpful. Also, which one should I flish first , RADIO or HBOOT ? Also, IS Hboot same as HSPL? Thank you guys! Have a merry CHRISTmas.
Nobody out there willing to help?

I am rooted, did it many many years ago and at that time only 1.6 was available as a good option.
I used " fastboot flash radio ........img" and It did not work... Any idea ?
what recovery are you using (amon ra? clockwork?)
also make sure you dont try flashing the most current radio/slp over what you have know, im under the impression if you do you will have at least a soft brick
dig through the forums and you are bound to find your answers. if all else fails right back and im sure i or someone else will help with your next steps
I believe I am using Amon Ra's ( Ra-dream-v1.7.0) recovery. That is what I am trying to figure out is to write over me existing SPL and radio so I can start updating to different roms. This is my stumbling block right now. I've searched for over 3 days in a row, and I see different ways to do it but I need answers whether , like you said, it will soft brick or brick my phone...
My recomendation is to start from the link at the end of my post. I'm not new to the G1,I'm kinda old hat from the JF days in the begining, but I basicaly used that thread to refresh myself on the G1 again. My advice is to read through the entire thread from the link at the end of my post, even tho it might take a while. For the most part, flashing the radio and spl isn't recommended through recovery, its better to flash through fastboot, but,I was on vacation and got bored and didn't have my laptop with me so I took a chance and it was fine, but that's because I had a very good idea as to how the G1 is configured. I spent a lot of time here in the forums back in the day. Just keep in mind,if you don't flash the right radio/spl combination,at best it won't boot the rom,at worst{which is more likely} you will brick your G1. Just some things to think about. Wes Garner over on Android Spin(I think that's the site),has a good page still up from back in the day,its the perfect guide going from downgrading to 29 and up to 1.6,just jump in from where you already are. Might not hurt to start over with the downgrade so you can make sure you don't mess up your phone. Sorry I don't have the link to his page at the moment, but when I find it ill post it. Something else i highly recommend is installing Droid Explorer, mainly because it sets up Adb for you and its mostly idiot proof for installing and works on Windows 7. I dont recommend using the Interface tho, there are some advanced settings with it where if you dont know what your doing it can deff brick your phone. If your comfortable with it tho check out all the options it has. It can flash recoveries, take screen shots, has an explorer to edit or delete files, and has a package installer for apk's. It can be tricky sometimes with a G1 because it was created for Moto Phones, but when you connect any Android Phone it starts ADB and has reconized every Android phone Ive connected to my laptop,so its a prettty good tool to have. Also, keep in this in mind, ive been playing with the Gingerbread Roms based on CM7 for the last week or so,they are all pretty laggy because CM7 isnt designed or supported officially from Cyanogen for the G1. The most stable and dependable for everyday use is CM6. The Gingerbread roms for pretty much (imho) proof of concept that the G1 can run them, but arent really a route id go if you want to use your G1 as a good back up phone. Anyways sorry to ramble on,i hope this info helps you out or anyone else with questions.
