I looked around on heimdall site, github page as well as searched this forum but didn't manage to get any information on whether it works for i9100G or not. I got a i9100G recently and am looking to root it now. I only have Linux on my machine so I cannot use odin.
I have been used to heimdall on SGS and I believe it is used by i9100 users too.
If heimdall doesn't work then what other alternatives do we have that can be used from Linux?
I think you can use phone odin, I've read in some post that it works well

Oh well! Will have to head somewhere to find a Windows machine which is safe enough. Hope heimdall will be able to support this device.
You can use Heimdall on Linux with your G, i used it while my windows-machine was broken.
Thanks then I'll go ahead and root my phone using heimdall.
Thanks everyone.
Heimdall does indeed work for i9100G. Happy to have my device rooted now. Feels good.
Stop posting questions in dev forum. This forum is for dev topcs not newbie help desk. Go to Q&A forum or general.
Sorry about that. The breakup of sections is what confused me. I thought this was the only section for i9100G.

I have owned a galaxy note for about 4 months now. But i have not been able to root or install custom ROMS because I can not get any PC to recognize my NOTE (therefore I cant use ODIN).:crying:
When i connect my note to any PC via a USB cable I get the message "USB connected - MTP connected" on my note but my computer does not recognize the note. I have installed the latest samsung note PC drivers , the latest KIES software.....it has been so tiring.:crying:
If there is any one that can help with a way i can root and install custom ROMS on the note via putting the files on the memory card (because I can sent files to the note from my PC via Bluetooth) i will be very happy. Also, if there is something i can do to make my PC recognize my note i would really love to hear it:cyclops:.
You do not want kies on your computer. To use Odin, the phone needs to be in download mode.

You can use 2 simple ZIP files to root your Note now. See Dr Ketan's thread in the dev forum. (Edit: reading the thread, Entropy has said the touch-CWM zip isnt safe as it still has the brick bug, so you probably don't want to do it that way after all!)

You can leave Kies installed - that's not your issue - but the phone does indeed need to be in download mode... Hold volume down, power and home buttons at boot up to enter download mode. From there you can connect your phone to the PC and launch Odin to connect.

heimdall one click for exhibit
Hey guys my exhibit is bricked. Download mode is the only thing i can do with it. I have tried every thing to fix it. Odin won't communicate with it, one click unsoft brick didn't help. But Heimdall one click will communicate with my phone. I tried to make one for exhibit but I'm just not knowledgeable enough to do it. I was watching a video on how to do it and I downloaded the stock firmware from samsung, but i didn't have all the files that the guy in the video was using and so I'm stuck. Can anyone help me with this or even better create me a Heimdall one click for exhibit so I can save a 150 bucks and not have to buy a new phone. Been working two days straight trying to get it running and now I'm fresh out of ideas. Thanks for anybodies help.

I already have that version of Odin. I've already used it probably at least 25 times in various computers and ports and with various cords. Odin doesn't work for me. It won't communicate with my phone. I downloaded the link you gave me and tried it all over again even read the wiki again just to be sure and it doesn't work. Heimdall does work though and that's why i need a one click for it. I'm willing to try other stuff, but I've already tried a lot. I think Heimdall is my best bet.
If you recently bought it, send it too Samsung, I just hard bricked my phone by being stupid, and they gave me a 10$ credit on my account and are fixing it for free

You want to root or use custom rom?
If just to have root access, you can try with enoxy abuse 1.4. If you want to flash rom then you need to flash philz kernel and flash your desired rom. You could check up wotj chain fire's guide or Dr.ketam. They are both great contributer

What is the used of custom rom?
some custom rom can tune your phone make it faster than stock. Eg. you can overclock or underclock your processor. Change your screen default dpi to lower resolution, customize your own theme, changing your system cache files to make your phone response faster and etc....
Root access is actually administrator mode for linux and andriod.

Hey , Chill out buddy. Dagger is right, when you sign to xda you are presented the rules which you have to follow. Being a noob does not excuse him from using the search engine or going through the stickies. Forums need to be clean from flooding the same question in multiple threads. Besides, you are reading his question but not answering or guiding him....so, I guess you are not helping either.
Nobody is saying that the question is not fine, but saying that just a little research would have answered that. There is a whole thread in the development forum called How to root/unroot by Dr. Ketan's that is amanzingly thorough...it is as easy as reading that.

Cole hii, the build version determines what kernel you need to flash. As you are on Stock ICS 4.0.4 with DXLR5 build version, the Philz kernel you need to flash is this one: http://www.mediafire.com/?c2jmfqnwajw8ei1
This will give you safe kernel (to avoid brick bug), CWM recovery and Root access.
You have to flash the file this way (this video might help but is in spanish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EPWIvIoEF8):
Download the kernel signed .zip file and put it in your external sdcard
Boot in stock recovery (press home + volume up + power and keep them pressed until you see the splash screen)
In the blue recovery menu, select install update from external storage and install the kernel file
reboot and you are done
Custom roms are all different and have their own instructions on how to flash them. So the best is to read what the dev of that particular rom tell you to do. In all roms you flash you will need to do a full wipe (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) and some other will require to format some partitions, that is why is so important to be on a safe kernel.
Hope it helps. :good:

Root normally screws up the update.

Root doesn't screw up the update- Kingo does. I was in your exact shoes.

Perhaps anecdotal, but I went in circles with Kingo. Couldn't unroot, couldn't update. Its method of rooting is not the same as other 'conventional' ways.
After restoring and rooting via the MJ5 restore process, I updated to NB4 with no issues. I didn't need RootCloak or anything of the sort. There are others. I haven't read of others successfully updating w/Kingo root. I could be wrong.
I did remove the root using kingroot web site but the safestrap was still there. I could not up date the phone. So i reinstalled kingroot again and iam back to square one, a rooted phone but cant up date.

I have been buried in XDA threads for a few years trying to learn as much as I can (thanks for that by the way)
The title of this thread is Can't download update so I hope I am asking this in the right place.
Plus over time I have come to learn that jerrycoffman45 is damn good at this stuff...
First off when I go to the MEGA site (https://mega.co.nz/#!Hd1QnA7b!MV5i7du4oim9zKLArQl51tTYiymqIXMhaALsMjFHRyQ) to download the "Coming from JB" for KNOXRAID KITKAT ROM V5.1 it works normal until it gets to 99 percent.
I've tried it on all 4 of my computers with the same result = is there another way I can get it?
Secondly, after I install the AllianceROM (thank you RErick) and am setting it up, my phone starts playing the boot animation like it keeps restarting like every other minute or so.
I really want to use the AllianceROM and could not find anything related to this when searching the thread or the entire forum.
Any help would really be appreciated!!!
Try using Internet Explorer or Chrome to download from Mega. It is a picky site.
Try to do a factory reset in the stock recovery. I have had to do that a few times right after installing a ROM to get it to boot properly.

I used to reed these threads and told myself that I would not waste the developers time with questions I could find the answer to my self...
That being said I did follow the instructions to the tee
I also tried creating a new fresh slot in safestrap and wiped it and flashed it a number of times following the examples given at different points of the threads
I have learned to follow the process that drakeymcmb has posted (wipe 3 times flash twice) on every install I do especially it its not working
I have 3 separate zip files downloaded to cover the corrupt file issue BUT I have not tried graydiggy's suggestion
If that does not work I will PM you if I figure out how to do that...
I try to give you as many thanks as I can and understand why people donate = you guys deserve it
Heck, I have paid good money for support as an IT manager and the techs were not as helpful as you guys are
One thing more, could you please direct me to the best thread to learn the proper protocols for XDA posting...
Thank you again

I used to reed these threads and told myself that I would not waste the developers time with questions I could find the answer to my self...
That being said I did follow the instructions to the tee
I also tried creating a new fresh slot in safestrap and wiped it and flashed it a number of times following the examples given at different points of the threads
I have learned to follow the process that drakeymcmb has posted (wipe 3 times flash twice) on every install I do especially it its not working

I'm in San Diego and the sun just set so I will have time to check it out
Oh, I'm downloading a fresh AllianceROM zip and will try your suggestion tomorrow
If you see some thanks coming from me from different places it is because of this
