Hi people,
I'm new to this forum and this is my first thread..
Here is my situation, i just recently bought a Captivate through ebay and its locked.. I will try to find the unlock code using the method in this forum.. after i unlock it, i think i would love to update the android os to 2.2..
will any of this process have the slightly chance of bricking my Captivate?
i will not try to root my Captivate yet coz of the possibility of bricking it..
I will wait until there are solutions to this bricking thing, or when i feel bored i might try this.. ^_^
also, if you guys are kind enough, i would love to know what all kind of things that will brick a Captivate..
Thanks..
I am no expert but XDA helped me with my first smartphone (Palm Treo 750 bought on ebay) and I did everything without any problem. You need to read much until you understand everything clearly and always follow the instructions step by step because these guys know their stuff. Currently buy a Captivate. I love this phone. Already rooted and Im to upgrade FroYo without fear because if it becomes a brick I know that here finds it solution. Good luck.
got to read
Yep, that's the key. Read, read, read, and then you will have to read some more! I'm new to the board also, and this is my first smartphone. I've spent the past month reading threads in the development section when I have the chance (which is not very often...) and there is still a LOT of reading and learning I need to do!
Don't forget to use the search, which might or might not help. Honestly the biggest help is to read all the posts in all the threads - which will take a while!!
Lot's of great help on this board. I'm pretty close to feeling up to speed enough to cook this thing without fear of bricking...
I would wait a while before you do anything like installing the JI6 Froyo ROM. From what I've read, you have more chance of bricking your Cappy during that process than by doing anything else.
BTW, by just rooting or unlocking your unit you have very little chance of bricking your phone. It's what you can do after you root your phone that can cause it to brick. lol
Like the above poster said; "READ, READ, READ" and then when you decide you want to do something, read some more. I've been reading these forums since before August 15 when I got my captivate, and I STILL haven't done anything like rooting because I'm staying "stock" until the official froyo update is released.
Thanks for the nice reply guys.. and yes, i will keep on reading through this forum..
btw, from what i understand, rooting will enable your phone to install android apps from worldwide market right? does it safe? i mean, i heard that someone bricked their phone while installing some apps..
If you are interested in side-loading apps, try the Android Sideload Wonder Machine (it's called something like that). It works well for me. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but it is useful to know.

once you are rooted, you would still have to enable market access (for apps outside your att restricted market)
i would like to see how installing an app bricked a phone.....i call shens.
rooting is easy, and just by rooting your phone you wont brick it. you would actually have to do something to harm it. even then, its all recoverable via ODIN.
Sorry for a noob question.. but, what is JI6? ^_^
JI6 is the version of froyo (android 2.2). Go on the phone to settings-> about phone-> it's in the baseband version. Mine is I897UCJI6 (froyo).

Well first advice is to read read read these forums, lots of information.
Your phone has a quite old version of android so updating that would be a good start. Froyo 2.2.1 is the latest official which should be available in Kies for you. Gingerbread 2.3.3 is expected to be officially released for the SGS within the next 2 weeks. You can also flash custom ROMs and newer ROMs then Kies offers you yourself, but without 3-button recovery thats tricky. Atleast make/buy and test a recovery JIG before going there.
Then maybe slap on a theme of your liking and get some good apps (dont be afraid to pay a few bucks for good apps either)
Being bored of phone usually means youre not doing anything interesting or fun with it a phone in itself is only so exciting

well, there's your problem
I don't know how much you already know but I advise you to read as much stickies and rom threads as you can. After that you will probably come to the conclusion that you want to install a custom ROM. Do so and your life will change forever
If you need any help, don't hesitate to consult the search function (or ask here^^)
Have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091
This is the place to start.
After you have read everything there, this would be some steps to follow:
1.Install ADB on your computer
2.Download Odin 1.7
3.Repair your 3-button recovery/download problem with Richtofen's guide (after this you can do whaterver u want with your phone, as long as you stay away from firmwares with bootloaders included)
4.Flash a 2.2.1 or 2.3.3 firmware using Odin (i recommend one of the deodexed firmwares from Ramad's thread)
5.Apply what ever theme you want
Maybe this instruction seem a little hard to understand now but after you've finished reading the wiki from the link i've posted, it will be more clearer.
thanks for all the replies I will start reading about what you guys have posted in the morning iam on my mobile now and it is late please stay in touch with me I will be replying activly and frequently thx again ! I will Risk my phone as long as you guys are here to back me up , I was afraid of applying the first 3 bottom fix as most users cried about their phones getting broken.

Being afraid in starting is normal .... but the golden rule is to read and understand several times what procedure u have to follow...and second imp thing is read n follow instructions provided in specific post.
As different rom needs different technique and different procedure.
Another thing is search youtube for videos on how to's.

Here is a link to custom rom MIUI 2.3.3. (I am not telling u to install it on ur device this is just for reference n learning purpose). It has all the instructions and also a video on how to install the rom. I would suggest just read the whole thing and try to understand what is involved in the process.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992251
Once you done with it then find another thread of custom rom and read through it.
And even read the comments on different pages it is very useful and most of the questions are also.answered. Thats how i learned .

Hi all,
I've had a GT-I9000 for over 6 months now and I haven't really tried too much stuff on it except for an official firmware update and OCLF, and as an XDA member this is my first post.
I'm currently running Froyo 2.2 (I9000DDJP2, kernel 2.6.32.9), everything was fine until my phone started to lag like hell and lots of force closes and reboots which is really pissing me off now. I was planning to wait for the official gingerbread update, however I think XDA already has tons of Gingerbread ROMS out there ready to be flashed. Also, I saw a few videos of I9000 running cyanogenmod which looked awesome. So i decided to give it a shot.
I'm a total noob at flashing, and to be honest, this will be my first time trying it out. Can you please suggest which is the best gingerbread ROM out there for I9000 and can it be flashed using ROM manager or do i need to follow the ODIN method.
Also, one very very dumb question , what is the difference between a ROM and a kernel, and is it required to flash both of them separately, if yes then which one should go first.

You need to read everything, especially if you don't know the difference between a kernel and a rom. You are no where near flashing, I'm saying this so you don't brick your phone.
Go to general thread and read through the stickies as these will lead you in the right direction. Once you have understood all of them, then proceed to flash.
Cyanogen is not for beginners so stay away.
Gingerbread roms that are supposed to be good are Juwes, Insanity, Simply Honey and Doc's. There are many GB roms but these seem to be the most popular.
Read everything until you know everything for sure and then go and flash
Good luck

Thanks for your reply... I'll start off with the reading i suppose, coz obviously i dont wanna brick my device... I've read that Insanity can be flashed directly using ROM Manager... Is this true?? If yes then can I try that one first, coz it seemed to be an easy enough method to flash a custom rom...
You also have to understand that Gingerbread is in effect Beta not released and devs still working on it in XDA . If you are capable of unbricking your phone dont mind breaking it then carry on otherwise wait for official release update through official method backup the firmware then customize as you want .

However as a consolation prize, you receive the home version of our game as well as the same answer the 385 previous contestants received...."All are good but it is a very subjective thing, try them all and see which one suits you best."
Thanks for playing our game, and happy Androiding.

How about responding with a link to a thread that does have good information on available Gingerbread ROMS. I have searched and have not found it yet. Obviously based on your response there are hundreds of threads about this topic. Why not offer up at least one that we can check out? Obviously I am not typing in the exact magical phrase in the search box that reveals this supposedly abundant information.

im NEWBIE when it comes to flashing,
im planning to flash my phone atleast to a ICS or better rom but....
they said if you flash your galaxy phone there is a chance to brick it... is it also, ALL custom rom out in the net also here in XDA
can do this to my phone?.. how will i know if it is comes from good source?...
i have lot of question bout flashing my mini, like what is the first step i need to do, 2nd? and so on!
can i bring it back to the stock rom if the custom rom i picked have lots of bugs?
what is porting?
BTW MY PHONE IS ROOTED since last night
please enlighten me!!!
comments are much appreciated
you need a lot of reading, please read every sticky of the mini forum
you can take your phone back to stock by flashing firmware through Odin (PC software)
first you will need to be on gingerbread because every rom here is maid for gb
second read about cwm recovery, recovery is what you will need to flash custom rom
follow every procedure correctly and no brick will be in your path
i think im using gingerbread, ill provide SS..
so i need to DL ODIN in my PC(stock purposes?)
if i follow the step by step procedure 100%? no brick will happen?
is there any link for CWM RECOVERY?
google for flashing firmware to mini and you will get Odin
read about flashing cwm, now also Odin will be used and do jot use rom manager your mobile may brick
for 2-3 days do only reading then do what you want to
damn im fxckng scared to flash my phone even though i read tuts bout flashing
nothing to scare for when we are here just clarify all your doubts before doing anything

First you will have to flash CWM
Follow the steps in the link given below:
http://yagyagaire.blogspot.in/2011/09/installing-clock-work-mod-recovery-in.html#.UDIx1KniaM9
Then you have to install a custom ROM of your choice(according to your specifications)
I suggest Andro-id 3.2
Follow the link below to flash Andro-id 3.2:

And that's it!
Hello guys I just sold my 4S and bought this Note 1 , anyway im new to android flashing and this stuff , ive heard that its way different than iOS restoring which is really easy and simple. Right now i got a few questions , If i missed a step or did something wrong it'll render my device unusable ofcourse , but will it be unrecoverable ? Thats the first thing. Second thing is that is it recommended that i install custom roms? right now i need one's with the Water Ripple effects on lockscreens , or if you can just tell me how to install the effect without custom rom's that'll be helpful because i want to flash official 4.1.2 jelly bean first and then the lockscreen effect. Im just new to the Android stuff and i dont know where to start Same feeling back in 2008 when i bought my first iPhone and got confused n' all
Read around for awhile, its what got me started when I first came here.
Again, read, read read, and avoid asking questions which have been answered countless times its annoying really.
Start with this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997, understand it by heart before attempting to root/flash on your new Note :good:
I dont really get anything , extract till tar what does that mean?

If you just install stock official 4.1.2 rom via odin, it should come with the ripple effect.
Or if the update is already available in your country, you can just update it to the latest official rom via kies.

You'll notice that all of the download links are zip files.
You just need to extract the zip file until you find the .tar file.
Get 7-zip if you don't already have an archive reader.
Help with kernel
So recently I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Note GTN7000 and flash it with franco kernel, then when I turned on my phone the bluetooth is not working and it constantly crashes and get stuck (The screen just go green and pink like an old TV with bad signal). So I panicked and unroot it immidiately. But that didnt seem to solve the problem.
So my question is, can I flash it with the original kernel. If so how? and where can I get it. can you teach me. (NOOB REQUEST )
just flash the stock rom again... using PC odin
Alright guys thanks for the reply , i heard theres a way you cab install roms without pc since i just want to install official 4.1.2 , ill do some research

Yep, there's a way to install roms without PC, using mobile Odin, but before that you should have your phone been rooted first.

Wait a few minutes. Let me get on my PC and I'll give you step-by-step instructions.
Now, do this:
Since you're scared, we'll do this the safest way possible
1.)Download a stock GB rom from here.(You can always come back to this ROM if you run into any trouble).Flash it via PC Odin.
2.)Wipe data and cache from recovery (Press Vol Up+Power+Home when phone is off in order to boot to recovery)
3.)Download stock JB rom from here.Flash it via PC Odin.
OR
1.)Update using Kies.
You're done

Im following this method right now , so i just download Gingerbread (550+mb i think?) and install via odin and then i have gingerbread? No additional steps ? No chance of loops/errors/bricks or anything or installing additional kernels like some people said cause that's whats confusing me ... i dont really want any custom kernal i want jelly bean stock ... if anybody could guide me through skype i'd be thankful
EDIT: Iv'e read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633938 thread carefully and it says that if you wipe using Settings you will get eMMC bug , i was on 4.0.4 and wiped but it booted normally without any problems (No loops No Restarting on its own No lags) and it was smooth , even though that app from playstore says my chip is insane .. Somebody explain this :S ?

Yes, then you'll have gingerbread. Don't forget to wipe after installing gingerbread.
It may brick. Not definite that it will brick. Still, better safe than sorry. Never wipe on stock ICS kernel!

Well said mate. Was going to say exactly the same. People seem to rethink it's a manned help site.
We will help but help your self first. That's how you learn.

I actually read and made my research already , and also successfully upgraded to jelly bean and i must say , i made a big mistake >.< The performance is crap and the phone gets overheated in a few minutes on both note 1 and 2 ( Its on 4.1.1) Im not really into kernels or custom rom flashing cause i already had a bad experience when i emmc bricked my old s2 thats why i take my steps carefully with this note. Ill downgrade to 2.3.6 and ordered an original battery (Yeah im using fake one stupid i know) and see of that fixes it. Appreciate your help guys , thanks
