Phone won't boot after installing custom ROM - HTC Sensation XL

Hi all,
I posted this question in the general Q&A first, but they advised me to post it here as nobody seemed to be able to help me there.
So I'm hoping anyone here can help me
Here it goes:
I've followed instructions on htcdev.com to unlock my Sensation XL and everything worked fine.
Afterwards I tried to install the ICS custom ROM which I downloaded from this site.
The installation seemed to be successful, but when my phone wanted to reboot, it got stuck on the "HTC" logo.
I also tried to install Ice Cold Zombie ROM, but then it got stuck on some strange screen with rotating triangles.
Here are the steps I took:
- Installed SDK
- Followed instructions to unlock my bootloader at htcdev.com
- Downloaded a recovery file found on google for clockworkmod
- I've plugged my phone onto my of, with USB debugging turned on and via command prompt performed " fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
- After that I rebooted my phone while holding down my volume button so I got into the recovery screen
- In that menu I've reset my device to factory settings and cleared cache/data and tried to install the ROM from my sdcard
I also kept looking for any answers in the internet and now I've found that HTC devices need to be S-OFF to be able to flash custom ROMs.
I've checked and mine is still S-ON, but I saw a thread here on the forum in which it states that there's no option to get S-OFF so I'm wondering on how to proceed.
I would be very thankful if anyone could help me out here!

Hi, if I'm getting it right you didn't flash the Chinese Rom right?
Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466436
if you follow these instructions it sure will work.
Good luck

this is one of the most asked questions on SXL device im sure.
clockwork mod doesnt work properly yet.
go to mount /system and then format
and i think /data also and then format
the automatic wipe all doesnt work, since SXL has no memory card, the files and things are in different places, or thats what i gathered.
backup all your photos and contact to pc or whatever and format every option there, reload rom, should work after that

Hi,
Thank you for the link.
I'll check it out as soon as I get home and will let you know if it worked!

You NEED to make sure you flash the chinese boot.img in fastboot first as that is what sets the phone up for being able to flash custom roms. Then flash the chinese rom too, but let the phone boot up with the chinese rom on, just to be on the safe side and then after that flash what ever rom you want and it should be ok... If you do everything correctly that is

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
I'm surely going to try this, but I have one question..
I need to clear everything, but I also need to have the custom ROM on the main folder of my "sd card".
So how can I bypass this?

Firstly ignore all of that..... Go to recovery and then plug usb cable in, go to mounts and storage and then go to mount usb storage. You should now get the sdcard pop up on your computer, download this Bindroind total wipe and transfer to your sdcard along with anything else you want to flash (eg chinese rom and another rom). Once thats done go back to install zip from sdcard and choose Bindroid total wipe, that will wipe everything apart from sdcard, it will then reboot into recovery, then flash the chinese rom once that has completed, turn the phone off and take battery out and put it back in and restart with power and vol down to get to bootloader, once there select fastboot and then flash chinese boot.img in command prompt by typing this 'fastboot flash boot boot.img'......... now reboot phone and with any luck it should boot up properly

Follow instructions and you will have no problem. The stickied guides all state what needs to be done and also a thread which provides a guaranteed way to get custom roms booting. You need to flash the chinese boot.img as explained before flashing any of the custom roms on here. After flashing the Chinese boot.img you may or may not need the Chinese rom. Just follow the guide mate it's there for a reason

theres no SD card as such? although it says it there in Clockwork
u can always wipe everything and copy the rom back later with mount SD card from CWM.

No probs mate. Its not that we are pros but any support offered by me is a proven fact as I've tried it myself. That's why the guides are there because I have physically tried and tested these methods and they worked for me. If I don't know something I will tell you I don't know and offer suggestions.

Oki, sorry, I've solved the problem by making a FULL WIPE

I know all problems are solved here but before installing a custom Rom always wipe cache, dalvik cache and data! And if necessary system! They are some of the main reason people either boot there phone and its stuck on HTC logo, or it boots to a black screen, or it boots straight into bootloader and you can't get anywhere from there, so remember! Do the wipes!

[Q] S-Off Incredible S Stuck in the white screen with htc logo

Hi there,
I hope somebody can help me with this.
I have a htc IS S-off, rooted and running with a custom ROM (the mike1986 ROM, which is incredible!!).
Yesterday, my kid took my phone and start "playing" with it and when I´ve realized it, it was to late... He had entered into the recovery (Clockworkmod v3.0.2.6) and deleted some important/ sensitive data (i guess).
The situation is that, now, the phone doesn´t start working. It just stucks in the white screen with the HTC logo.I´m able to enter into the Hboot and, which is more strange, into the Clockworkmod recovery but when I reboot the system it just doesn´t start.
I´ve tried to reflash that ROM and other ROMS, but the result is always the same (Which gives me to the conclusion, speaking from my absolutely ignorance, that it shoudn´t be a ROM problem...).
I´ve also tried to make a "Factory reset", but the result is the same.
Important: When I enter into the recovery, it appears different lines of tex2t informing that: "E: can´t mount cache/ recovery/ command, log & last log. I´ve also browsed in the "advance" options of the recovery, and the system appears always unmount, and it doesn´t allow me to mount it (I don´t know if this is important or not).
Does somebody have an idea about how to fix this problem?
I would really appreciate if somebody could help me with it.
Thank you in advance!
Go to the mounts and storage menu ... format everything except your sdcard and flash mike's rom again ... see if it pops out an error ... should be fixed now ... temme if the recovery says anything wierd ...
Sent from my Incredible S using XDA App
If things dont work out ... here is a last hope-
*take the rom.zip from a RUU
*rename it to PG32DIAG.zip
*mount your sdcard to your pc in CWM recovery from the mounts and storage menu
*paste the zip unto your sdcards root folder
*reboot into bootloader and it will ask you if you want to update ...this will revert to stock and you can start the whole rooting process etc again
Also if you are alpharevx soff ... you will need a goldcard ... but not if your are xtc soff

You cannot install CWM without S-OFF. What else have you done to get your phone in the state it is in.
I have a dincs in the same state. It's stuck in a boot loop and won't do anything. Spent 20 hours trying to fix it and still no luck
--------------------------
On a side note. If he can not do anything with his phone being s-on could he not just wait till later this month and s-off through HTC since that will be an available service very soon?

Ok thanks. Since you have a Bell Mobile IncS, have you tried flashing the official BM GB RUU? That should at least get your phone going and usable.

[GUIDE] How to revive HTC Salsa from a bricking

Credits to-
BigBearEvo- For making important modifications.
kashttl- For informing about errors with ROM Toolbox.
Introduction-
In simple language, bricking is just making your phone unusable. But as we go deeper in this world of rooting, we find ourselves reading posts with terms like “soft-brick” and “hard-brick”. So what is the difference?
Hard-brick
Hard-brick is when you mess up with your boot image while updating, or when you snatch your phone's USB cable while an update is going on through PC. Or even worse, you flash a ROM @ 0% battery.
Soft-brick
Soft-brick is when you fail to clear your Dalvik, forget to format/wipe data, which leads to your phone going into a bootloop i.e- keeps playing bootanimation for a long time (15 mins or more). This generally happens when there is some mismatch of Android Virtual Machine with installed apps. Or for us, the phone is stuck in White HTC logo screen.
So how to get your phone back to life in case of-
Hard-brick
Sorry boss but your phone is dead. Reviving it will be more expensive than buying a new one. Also this task is done only by a few specialists.
Hard brick can be solved in case of improper flashing of RUU or updates on Stock Phones. you require USB drivers to be installed along with HTC Sync.
You Need the proper RUU designed for your area model.
Load phone into Bootloader screen. Run RUU from PC. you may have to do this several times and follow instructions carefully. You will eventually you load the RUU and have a working phone.
This isn't for the Noob to do. Recommendation is see a service engineer, or seek good help from users that have done this. each Hard brick can be different, dependent on what they did in the first place
Soft-brick
Hmmmm.. Something can be done-
A> First pull out your battery.
B> Put it back.
C> Press Power and Volume Down simultaneously till you enter fastboot screen.
D> Get into recovery mode.
Now you have 2 options-
i> Restore to one of your previous backups.
ii> Flash stock ROM or some other stable ROM.
Precautions while flashing-
A>Firstly DO NOT flash using ROM Toolbox or apps with similar functionality. (Credits- kashttl). People from HTC Desire forum faced a lot of hassle in doing so.
B> Don't just snatch your USB Cable while transferring ZIP file from PC to SD card. It will lead to CWM recovery Errors.
C> Have at least 50% battery charge in your phone before flashing any ROM, minimal level is 20% as 5% battery is used when flashing.
D> Always do a Triple wipe before flashing ROM. (Data/Cache/Dalvik)
E> Always do a Nandroid backup of current ROM before changing into a custom one. (Recovery or Rom manager)
F> Follow any other special instructions (If any) while flashing.
G> If you end up with any problems with a certain ROM, please post in the ROM thread ASAP.

Remove battery and get to hboot menu. Hold volume down key then then power on while holding down.
If u have recovery, boot into it and wipe everything. If not, factory reset on hboot and try to reboot. Seems what ever u did has buggered it and u have to start over.

Depends on the stage you got to. did you try to flash an RUU for your area? if you did it would have wiped your recovery program off. if your didnt and still have cwm installed, please go to another rom that takes your fancy and follow flashing guides from there. more info would be helpful though.

If the USB wasn't detectable it means your pc/laptop does not have the correct programs installed to find it. IE adb etc & java sdk/jdk installed.
try the other methods first though as it should work out easier

HTC One Stuck at HTC Logo (bricked?)

PROBLEM IS FIXED WITH THE HELP OF USER: daorderdillon
Hello guys, i'm searching for a solution to my problem (for several hours now) but i cant find anything useful. My chrome browser is full of tabs now
What the problem is, i had Android revolution rom installed on my HTC One. I wanted to try the Maximus rom so i downloaded it straight on my HTC. I rebooted into recovery and made a nandroid backup. Then booted into the Android revolution rom again. Looked at the nandroid backup if it was there. Then rebooted into recovery again, did a wipe and wiped cache partition. Then i flashed the Maximus rom and followed all the steps via Aroma. I went away and let the installer finish. When i got back i saw the CWM Screen but no sign that the installation finished. I clicked on reboot system anyways and thats when everything started going wrong. I'm stuck on the htc logo. I can go into bootloader, but when i click on recovery it restarts, shows the CWM logo very briefly and then powers down and starts getting stuck on the htc logo again.
I've searched on xda and google but found only tutorials about adb and stuff. But when i try it, it doesnt find the device. In the tut it asks to enable 'usb debugging', but i don't know if its enabled, cause i cant boot the rom.
Can anybody please help me?
PS. Fastboot works, but i cant find a command to boot into recovery.

it did not start and i tried several times and restarted etcetc, i then tried to flash in another recovery and then tried more and more but nothing..
then i cant remember now exaclty how i did it, but i have several RUU, kernel, recovery, boot and roms n such items downloaded
so i tried to feed in another flash or rom or whatever its called to get the recovery funtion to work (i am not very pro at this) and then when i wanted to start my phone normally it all of a sudden wont boot properly.
it freezes on the bootscreen.. i can turn off and go in to bootloader but i cant do ANYTHING from there, i cant do a factory reset (wich i also tried when the recovery did not want to work) i cant do **** there. tried to lock and unlock bootloader.. feels like im out of options..
the only thing i can do now is command the phone via cmd and the toolkit i use from here "Hasoon2000s htc one x AIO kit"

ive tried so many things now, searched this and other forums since friday and i still can not get anywhere... starting to think this is what the definition of a bricked unit is??
if you need any more info please just ask.. i bought the phone a week ago so kinda sucks if it would be useless for me right away haha..

Need some help daorderdillon...I have an HTC One M8
I wanted to flash to the UNROOTED Google Play Edition...so I rooted, TWRP'ed and did the S-OFF
and then tried to flash the ROM while in RUU mode...it gave me back a "41 error"...
so I tried to change the ModelID in the android.txt file...flashed, and then my HTC One M8 kept going into the HTC logo screen with 4 triangle error screen
When I do fastboot oem reboot, it gets me back into the device - but any normal restart after, and I'm back in the HTC logo error screen
I can't go into recovery mode either - using the POWER and UP / DOWN buttons or through the software...
Stuck, and I really don't know what to do

First of all - Please format your posts into paragraphs. People don't like reading a wall of text and will probably make it less likely for you to receive help.
(Im going to assume you haven't made a Nandroid backup and made a safe copy)
I'm new to Android a couple of months so there will be people on here with more experience than me who might be able to help you with an easier/quicker method, but this is what I would do:-
Download the latest Android Revolution HD (a Sense-based ROM that is the same as stock but better - read about it), other Sense-based ROMs are available but I like ARHD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023
Rename it to something like arhd.zip
Use the All-in-one-toolkit to side-load the ROM to your phone. It will begin to install automatically. Use the volume/power keys to install - it makes it less likely for the installer to crash.
There would be no need to root as ARHD comes already rooted.
You could also look/ask around for a Nandroid backup of your device/carrier and adb side-load to your phone but that would be more work for you. This would put your phone back to stock like new again. The best guide I've seen on here for people new to flashing, backups, etc. is here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618
**Tampered** happens I think when you flash a custom recovery. S-ON is normal - don't worry about it.
Good Luck. Hope I've helped...
If I've made any mistakes here, someone please correct me...

To be honest mate I can't totally remember, I've only used it once and it's been a few weeks since I messed my phone up and had to use the toolkit sideload to fix it. I'm on a Mac at the moment so can't even check. It wasn't too hard to figure out though!
The toolkit (by hasoon) you already have is the toolkit I'm talking about. Sideload is just installing the ROM from somewhere else when it's not stored on your phone. (i.e. on your PC).
The installer (if you get that far) is called 'Aroma' and quite buggy when using the touchscreen so just use the volume keys to move around the options and the power button to select them.
Ty lol, Im currently using volume and power button to moving in the bootloader, it a brand new phone and im panic lol. Ill try all of that tomorrow

I was too, but if you can reach the recovery screen then it will be ok and there will be a way of fixing it somehow.

Like I said, I can't remember 100%, but its in the toolkit under 'Extras' -> 'Sideload a ROM' or something similar. It might even guide you through the steps. There's probably guides and videos online somewhere. Just call your zip file something simple to help reduce the chance of error.
Not sure I understand what you're saying... If you press recovery, you're taken to the recovery screen?

the tool work from fastboot mode in bootloader. so you must be in bootloader to use it but the toolkit has options that will boot the phone into bootloader

Tried what before? When you press 'fastboot' on the device nothing major happens on the phone - it's waiting for commands from your PC.
Edit - Too late, what he said ^^
It keep saying in cmd that device not found

Try to push it to your device without the toolkit. Read this site
http://m.androidcentral.com/android-201-10-basic-terminal-commands-you-should-know
Use adb push command to send the ROM to your phone while in fastboot mode. Once it's on your phone, just go into recovery and install it from zip.
Place the 'android-tools' folder you download from that site directly onto your c:/ drive, not on your desktop etc. It just makes it easier.

Forgot to say - put the arhd.zip ROM into that folder also.
Try to go into recovery first to see what folders you have, if any. I had a folder called '0' when I messed up so my command would have been
adb push arhd.zip /sdcard/0

Won't Boot after a couple roms

So I've searched the forums, and am still confused. I have a boost mobile HTC 510 that I unlocked, rooted, and put a couple of the roms on. I was using a OTG flash drive with a micro USB on one end. It worked ok, but at one point it showed my phone number as 00000000941 or something, and quit working . I would like to take it back to stock or something workable. Below is my Factbook and the screen I'm stuck at, everything has been wiped. I downloaded the stock sprint/Virgin Rom I think, I'll try that??

If you have a backup saved, remove the battery and replace it and then press the volume down button and the power button at the same time until it turns on and then select recovery and tap wipe and then just wipe everything except the SD card and usb and then go back home and and tap restore and then restore one of your backups.
Edit: Stop trying to use the RUU it will never work with the boot unlocked and a custom recovery installed.
