[Q] Entering Recovery in 2.1 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys...
Recovered from a soft brick yesterday with one click Odin but now I can't seem to enter recovery anymore...
My firmware seems to be 2.1 update 1...
Do I need to update to gingerbread first? I haven't tried getting into download but what happens if I can't?
Tried about 20 times getting into recovery >_> Is it built into eclair?

Have you tried using ADB to enter recovery mode? Often the three button combo gets broken when flashing custom roms, or at least it has for me in the past
Sent from my AOKP icy-glitched Captivate via Tapatalk 2

Flashin the i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders will resolve the button combo issue.
(Be aware that there is always a risk when flashin bootloaders. Proceed with caution...and a reliable micro usb/usb cord and good connection, etc.)
!! Do not use the old "3 button fix" !!
U have been warned

Is adb included in sdk? That's on my mac so do I just connect the device to my mac and open terminal and type "adb reboot recovery"?
Should I try flashing the KK4 Gingerbread first? Or should I keep the 2.1 to get ROM Manager to easily install CWM?

All ur choice. It just depends on ur final destination.

Are the bootloaders the ones right at the bottom of this post?

Yep. I believe so. There is also a link within that OP post under the "Odin method..."
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

Not at home now but...my phone boots normal. Do you think that if I can't get into recovery I can't get into download mode? How do I force that?
After flashing the bootloaders do I flash an update.zip to get root and then install clockwork mod again using Odin? I don't want to brick again, if somebody would be so kind to link me to a good cwm link and a rooted rom link I would so appreciate it! Is the speedmod kernel under the "Odin method" rooted?

The "Guide..." by TRusselo that is a Stickied Thread in this Forum is the best to follow if u r going to flash a Dev's Rom.

Putting Permanent CWM and Roms on tab?

Hello,
I just bought and received a tmobile 16 gb tab today off of ebay. Im not new to android. I have a droid pro and tmobile g2x. Both have cwm and able to replace factory recovery with cwm.
The tab is already rooted via superoneclick, chainfire's patch been applied.
I tried searching for cwm permanent for the tab but seem to not find a clear cut process to get a cwm recovery. Can anyone please point me in the right direction. My tab is currently running 2.2 foyo. I already know since the tab has different version and is available for many carriers, that roms are very different
Sent from my SGH-T849 using Tapatalk
If you have a gsm version, you can flash the overcome rom, it has cwm built in. Look at the overcome site or thread for instruction.
Yeah I just read through it.
So I can go ahead and load overcome via odin? Wheres stock 2.2 firmware just incase it soft bricks?
Its a gsm tab but I only use it over wifi
And should download jupiter nowipe or wipe version?

thank you very much, im downloading the stock safe v5 gingerbread from their site
what happens if i want to flash the cm7 testing rom or another rom in the forum? would cwm disappear?
or is it in essence perm. cwm even if i switch roms
so i followed instructions to the T and odin tool saying fail so i guess it has been bricked
im re-trying again
do i select re-partition?? because odin tool is doing nothing after retrying
have you checked your bootloader as tell in the tutorial ?
It fails at which step ? Is your bootloader locked or unlocked ? Did you put it in download mode ?
Thanks for the concerns, i ended up fixing the issue
Let it die and tested to see if it even charged when i connected it to power outlet. With stroke of luck, got it back to dl mode and now running overcome
If i flash a different rom will overcome kernel will still be on my tab? So i can keep cmw on it?
Sent from Galaxy Tab 7" W/ Overcome Rom
If you flash via cwm, you will still have cwm.
Cool thanks. So it will keep the kernel unless I flash a new one via odin
Ima try flash cm7 build via cwm
Sent from Galaxy Tab 7" W/ Overcome Rom
Beware not all zip files are flashable with cwm. If it's not specified, don't do it or you will brick your tab.

[Q] HELP! Deleted/formatted EVERYTHING using CWM

To some this might sound stupid but I kind of 'Intentionally' deleted absolutely EVERHTING from my phone with CWM. I am really a noob at this stuff, i've been looking for threads explaining a fix (if there is one) but I haven't found anything. In case you're wondering, I deleted everything because I tried to flash a new rom and it just stayed with the one I was using previously, please help me out here.
When I turn on my Captivate it just stays on the AT&T boot screen.
ALSO: I can't go into CWM recovery, what can I do? Please help!
Simply flash an appropriate kernel through Heimdall/Odin. It's no big deal.

Ok, how do I know what the appropriate kernel is and how do I flash it?
As I said, I'm a noob at this stuff
EDIT: Ok so i've found a kernel and flashed it. The phone boots up but stays at a "Galaxy S SGH-i897" screen and it says samsung on the bottom, but that's it. I've tried flashing one of those one click odin from this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843 but it stays at "setup connection" please help me out here, haha.

I mean an appropriate kernel depending on your current ROM, i.e. if you're on Gingerbread, flash corn, if ICS, flash semaphore.
And yeah the phone isn't going to boot past there because you wiped /system probably. Either flash a ROM through CWM or Odin.

Well thanks guys! I finally got it working. I ended up flashing a stock GB rom that i got from that thread. Since Odin didnt work ( ) i used Heimdall to flash gb 2.3.4
Thanks for the help!

Stock Capitivate now what do I do.

I used to have a Samsung Fascinate, but we just left Verizon for Straight Talk. 2 years ago AT&T gave me a refurbed Captivate that we left in the box until now. It has Eclair but I am wanting to possibly upgrade it to Stock Gingerbread or a nice stable Rom. So if someone could give me some pointers (sounds vague) that would be great.:good:

Check out my thread titled JellyUI in the Captivate Dev section. Instructions on how to flash the rom are in the first post. Enjoy
I actually think this is not a bad place for the post although Q&A would be better. I recently tried to bring my old cappy from stock to ICS. I had gingerbread but when I tried to flash CM9, I must have had an old CWM that was not compatible and got into a bootloop where the only way out was to odin back to stock. Then I had a nearly impossible time finding all the files that would allow me to get to ICS. Designgear's and a number of other files referenced throughout the dev section for upgrading have bad links now. I am on an i9000 bootloader with 2 button recovery (since the easiest way to get back to GB was to flash S7v3 with Odin since all the referenced files are still there) but cannot figure out an easy way to get a 3 button CWM even after spending a few days looking for a way to do it just using Odin and CWM as I did in the past. After a lot of trial and error and even getting to a point where I could not get into download mode anymore, I did get CM9 flashed eventually but I will not try again until I figure out how to at least get a 3 button CWM. I went almost two years as a cappy flashaholic and never once had to use ADB or Heimdall, so would prefer not to if possible.
If someone could provide a list of valid links to all the files that are necessary to go from stock to being able to flash ICS or JB roms, I will archive the files so they won't be lost.

I tried the 1st part but my phone automatically booted into recovery mode after the 1st Odin Flash.
If that was after u flashed the GB Bootloaders, that is ok. Just pull battery, replace it, get back into download mode and then Odin flash the Speedmod kernel so u can get the CWM Recovery. Then u can flash ur Rom of choice from there.

So does the speedmod kernal have CWM Recovery on it? I don't need to add that?
Also do I need to do a wipe?
That is all that u r Odin flashing the Speedmod kernel for...just to get to the CWM Recovery.
Just like the Guide states---after u Odin flash the kernel use the Button combo to reboot into Recovery. That kernel is not there to boot ur phone up, only there for u to use cwm.
And usually the Rom u flash will do a full wipe. But u can do it in the recovery if u want before u flash ur rom.

Cool thanks! I was thinking of doing a the latest Cyanogen 7.2 Rom or the Cyanogen 9.1 Rom. They are both on my Cappy.

Forever stuck on Eclair

I received the Captivate from a friend of mine who complained that AT&T kept bricking his device through Kies and OTA updates. He never was able to update his device to Froyo. I unlocked the device to work on my carrier and then I tried Kies on 3 different computers (running XP and 7), and my device was stuck on the AT&T screen. Using odin oneclick, I got my firmware back to UCJF6 (stock Eclair). Since then, I've tried nearly every one click available (that hasn't been deleted off the internet), I've tried updating bootloaders and installing a separate kernel before flashing a rom in CWM:
However, the device would not boot into recovery mode after following these steps:
Anyone have any suggestions? Never have I had such a frustrating phone, and that has some merit after owning a Motorola XT720.
Have u tried this one With Bootloaders http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912.
Then use the regular Odin to flash the .tar file version of the KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A that will give u CWM Recovery and u could proceed from there to a Dev's Rom.

The link you posted contained a good 7 different ROMS. I already had the Designgears Odin one click (Eclair stock with BL) downloaded and that's what I used before flashing anything else on that page. That ROM works and gets me back to stock 2.1 however that's the only ROM that has worked for me.

I flashed using Odin with BL, then i flashed KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A. Now I try restarting my device and booting it into recovery mode, and it doesn't work..? Recovery mode has never worked on this device unless I run an ADB command in CMD or using an app with root access.
I've been holding down all 3 buttons for 3-5 seconds and releasing, tried using the up button too the same way.
If I leave the device running, it stays stuck on the AT&T screen.

I even tried this and I was unsuccessful.
Okay, I must be missing something here, because none of the oneclicks work except for designgears stock 2.1 ROM (I897UCJF6).
I'm going to start over and i hope someone here can guide me in the right direction:
I'm running stock 2.1 ROM, might as well be straight out of the box. I want to upgrade to 2.3 with GB BL so that I can flash whatever ROM i wish in the future. Kies Mini doesn't work, so that's out of the picture.
The One Clicks that 4-2ndtwin post a link to (both IlluminatedOne's and his own) do not work, meaning that I get stuck at the AT&T screen and it just pauses there. I have no problem getting into Download Mode or Recovery Mode while using the WORKING 2.1 I897UCJF6 ROM, however if I run ANY of the oneclicks other than I897UCJF6, i cannot boot into Recovery Mode.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, I have the 64bit drivers installed. I have tried Windows XP as well.
Sorry for the double post, but what in the world do I do?
Ok. Go here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30840818
This is the full firmware for i897ucKF1 GB 2.3.3 with Bootloaders included. This is not a One Click. U will use the regular Odin and load the files in their cooresponding tabs of Odin. PDA file in PDA slot of Odin. CSC file in CSC slot. MODEM file in MODEM slot. Pit file in pit, etc. Connect in Download mode. Start. After this u can flash Corn Kernel and proceed.
Some of the Captivates don't like One Clicks. So maybe that is the deal with ur phone.

Well I did finally get it downloaded off of your dropbox and I used the Odin that came with the zip file and flashed all files given (CSC, Modem, PDA and PIT) and it's still stuck on the AT&T screen.. haha. Any other ideas?
Maybe this
I upgraded from stock Froyo 2.1 rooted to GB 2.3.5 with bootloaders using this package:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285616.
If you look here at post #3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912
it says this:
**Once u have the i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders, it is not necessary to flash bootloaders again. The i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders are backwards compatible, therefore you can flash Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, CyanogenMod, and MIUI Firmware/Roms without the bootloaders included, per the proper install instructions.**
Maybe your boot conflict is because you're trying to load the GB bootloaders again and there are 2 boot files or a glitched boot file. I'm no expert but I tend to go back to the simplest reason when I'm troubleshooting something that should work. Though it seems like a complete wipe and re-partition would delete bootloaders, maybe it doesn't from the sound of the above.
Try the package without bootloaders from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285616
It loads the rom and the kernal with CWM all at once with a full wipe and repartition.
I always remove the Sim and external sd card before flashing and disable my anti-virus when I'm in Winblows.
I hope SOMETHING works for you.

Have you tried getting into recovery when its stuck at the att screen and clear the cache or whatever other clearing you can do? Maybe CWM will be loaded. If it re-boots while holding the three button recovery method, that may be a good sign. Then at the re-boot, let go of the power button at the next att screen.
Does Odin give it a pass?
Are the roms your flashing rooted before you flash? In other words is Eclair rooted and then all others?
Pull the battery at the att screen?
Or go back into download mode and re-flash if that doesn't work.
I'm just guessing and the last 2 suggestions could be dangerous.......................I don't know.
Edit: Have you tried this?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364. It has a root file and a CWM file for Eclair. I tried the links to those and they did connect.

I've found that when applying the stock Eclair ROM, it never says "pass", it says reset--however it works and reboots into 2.1update1. My phone isn't rooted, it has been though. I've realized that some oneclicks say "Re-partition, Full Wipe". My experience is that my phone never enters recovery mode so my phone never wipes anything like the oneclick intends to do. I have not been able to enter recovery mode once I have flashed 2.2 or even 2.3 with or without bootloaders. Do you guys think that's the problem? And if it is, how would I enter recovery if the button combo doesn't work...?

Pulling the battery is not a great idea, it's only when it's "needed".
OP, I'm must say I'm quite confused myself, none of it makes sense.. Although, did you try flashing a 2.2 custom ROM?
I'm thinking you have some either bad or corrupted files/hardware keeping you from flashing but if you're able to flash a custom ROM, then there might be hope.
Also, a JTAG/box might work. They now flash stock GB and could *maybe* overwrite w/e in your phone that is messing with all your flashing.
BTW, it sounds like you are doing the wrong thing to get into recovery. Hold both volume keys, and then press the power button as you would to turn the phone on normally/until the screen turns on. Then, keep holding the volume buttons until you see recovery.
And which at&t screen are you stuck on? The very first one or the boot animation?

That's the strange thing, it will NOT boot into recovery when I flash say KK4. I hold the volume buttons for over 30 seconds, and it just stays at the AT&T screen. It gets stuck before the boot animation, I never see it when I try to flash anything 2.1+. I have booted into recovery mode before, so I know that I am doing the button combo properly.

[Q] Captivate Glitch!?

Ok so using Odin oneclick to unbrick my semibrick samsung captivate its all set and good, but then i root it. Thats successful as well, but then i try to use odin 3.07 to install the GB Kernel after installing the rooted MUGU into it and when my phone boots it INSTANTLY glitches and i have to go back to Odin oneclick to bring it back to 2.1 which i believe is Eclair.
Any help would be appreciative and thank you
I believe ur problem is that u r trying to flash a GB kernel on Eclair firmware. So...
Update to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread here...Stock GB i897ucKK4
You will need to use a one click with the GB Bootloaders. Heed all warnings about flashing BLs. U do not want to break the connection during the few seconds that the bootloaders are being flashed, i.e. power, usb/micro usb cable. And once u have flashed the Stock GB KK4 one click with bootloaders, there is no need for u to flash back to stock eclair with its bootloaders. If u ever need to flash back to a Stock firmware to fix something or whatever, just use one of the KK4 one clicks without the bootloaders included.
Get Root and/or KK4 Corn Kernel that has CWM Recovery included so that u can move on to flashing Dev Roms here...[Utility] KK4 Easy Root. See post 4 in this thread for a working download link.
Read carefully. Read some more. Understand what ur doing and the risks involved. Proceed. Enjoy. Be sure to at least hit the Dev's thanks buttons because they have worked hard and spent a lot of time doing what they do.
Ok so if i remember correctly(i am not on my comouter right now) odin 3.07 has a BL slot and the PDA slot. If i input the GB BL into the BL slot and the KK4 into the kernel slot would i be able to run them under the same odin setup or would i have to run the BL restart my phone into download mode and THEN run it again? Sorry im a huge noob when it comes to flashing, i onlt found out about it from my stepdad who put Darkstar on his Note

The Odin or Heimdall One Clicks that I linked above will do it all for u. There are instructions included in those downloads.
