My galaxy note seems to reset the wallpaper layout to spread across each pane instead of staying as the whole picture on each pane (which I set it to do). I don't know why this is and I'm getting fed up of having to change it. This is my main query.
My note also just reset itself whilst I was in the middle of a phone call.
When updating to ICS the layouts were reset so there were no apps that I wanted on the main screen, no widgets whee I had set them up and no bookmarked internet pages. This doesn't matter now as I have gone through the trouble of doing it all again, but I thought it might be useful for people to know if they are considering to buy this phone.
I've seen an aweful lot of good reviews for this phone, but I'm beginning to wonder why.
You obviously downloaded a full wipe version of pics, or possibly wiped yourself during the process. Pretty standard behavior really, not sure it needs a thread about it!

There's too many people on here that act cocky, just because they know more than somebody else. Do you get enjoyment out of it?
As it happens though, you were no help at all because you haven't answered my question.
I don't know why the layout keeps changing on its own. I've got no idea what you mean about a full wipe version of pics. I have downloaded nothing of the sort. All I have done is taken a picture and set it as my wallpapaer, but the phone decides to spread the picture across all the panes after a while and I have to keep changing it back.
Sorry, that was supposed to be ics not pics.
What I meant was the old add age of a bad worker always blames his tools, the rom seems to be behaving normally.
And you didn't ask any questions, just slagged off a great phone
Sent from my Paranoid Android GT-N7000. It doesn't get much better than this!
Ok... Why does my wallpapaer layout change on its own? There you go... The fact is, you still don't know the answer and you haven't helped me.
'A bad worker blames his tools'
I don't really know what that has to do with anything. I just use the phone as normal and the wallpaper layout changes on its own. Nothing to do with me or how I use it.
And as I mentioned, the phone restarted whilst I was in the middle of a phone call... To me, that doesn't sound like a great phone.

Ok. Assuming you're using TW Launcher, goto "Applications" > "Settings" > "Display" > "Home Screen Wallpaper" > Select your favourite wallpaper here > choose the second layout (with one column > the right option not the left one) and you'll have a non moving non spreaded wallpaper.
Hi djpianz
I have done this and that's what I have to keep doing every time I turn my phone on.
When I turn my phone on it seems to have reset to spread accross all the panes.
Problem still not solved. It still happens every time I turn my phone off and on again.
I did have that same issue on gb. I know its not a fix, but a work around, but have you considered a 3rd party launcher?

Spydertracks. Excuse my ignorance but what is a 3rd party launcher and how do I go about using one? Problem still persists.

A launcher is what gives the phone its visual style. So touchwiz is a launcher and there are various others eg. Launcher7, adw, go launcher, spb shell 3d. They each add different functionality and provide sensation to the home screen, folder and app drawer layout.
Have a look at each of of them on play store and see what you think.

I was very excited when I got the pop up notification of a system update available on my phone. I dug around online to try and find a changelog with no luck. So I decided to pull the trigger anyway and see if it fixed any of my main frustrations with the phone.
There are 3 things that should be a simple update to fix yet none of the 3 were included.
1) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858043
Ability to change default homescreen. I like having screen 2 as the default so I can page left for utility apps/widgets and page right for music/play apps/widgets. Apparently the homescreen furthest left is always the default. Every other launcher I have ever used has let you specify which homescreen you want to be the default.
2) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815915
I spent the $50 or so for the desktop dock since I use my phone as my alarm clock on my nightstand. EVERY time I plug the phone it (set to bedside clock to launch as default) it comes up with an error that smartdock has stopped working. I shouldn't have to revert to an old version of the Google store as a workaround, a system update should have fixed this!
3) Phone/Notification ring volumes are independant with no way to link together. (couldn't find a reference thread)
When I use the volume rockers on the side of the phone it adjusts only the incoming call ringer volume, not the notification volume. If I want both to be loud or both to be quiet I have to pull down the notification bar, tap the settings icon, tap the sound icon, tap volumes and adjust both, which can not be done silently as the ringer plays as you adjust them! THIS IS NOT CONVENIENT AT ALL!!! My old Atrix 4g had the option to link the 2 together which makes the most sense! Again, this should be a simple option to add with a patch.
I know these are little things in the big picture, but the fact that a patch was pushed out and failed to address any of them leaves me very frustrated. Apparently the only thing that seems to have changed with a 70+mb update is a new camera icon.

Sorry to hear that the update didn't live up to your expectations. For your first problem though, I would recommend an alternative launcher. The most popular ones used for ICS and above are Apex Launcher and Nova Launcher (I personally use Nova Launcher Prime, the paid version of Nova).
Just for clarification - you were in the soak test for this update, correct?

Well I guess that's the beauty of Android isn't it. I can download an alternate launcher, find an app to fix the volume thing and roll back to a previous version of the app store and all will be well. Guess it's time to do some "customizing".
If I am part of the soak test it would be news to me. All I know is while I was at work yesterday afternoon I got a pop up saying an update was available. I can't remember if I signed up for anything like beta testing or not.

If you opted in to the Motorola Feedback Network on the Motorola forums, then you are most likely a part of the soak test which is currently testing the update.
Hmm, I went to try my usual logins on the motorola forums page, found out I had only part way registered. It new my username/password but took me to an "edit your profile page" that allowed me to opt in to the Feedback Network. Apparently I hadn't done that before. Also I didn't have any devices registered there. Doesn't look like I got signed up for the soak test that way.
I spent a few minutes playing with 3rd party launchers and found out that the circles widget does not work with non stock launchers. I have come to really like the simplicity of the circles widget. I'll have to decide if a non-optimal default homescreen is worth the hassle to keep the circles widget.
I also tried to revert to an older version of google play music, but can't get it back to the version mentioned in the desktop dock crashing thread.
Downloading a free app called cVolume seems to have linked the phone/notifications volume.
So for now I am 1 for 3 on getting things straightened out. Maybe we will get the JB update soon and all of this will become a moot point...

Can you tell what has changed in the new update?
Don't get me wrong, the update didn't make anything worse. In fact I have noticed a few things running more smoothly.
My frustration comes from the update seemingly ignoring the minor complaints I have with the software. I was hoping the update fixed the things that bother me and it didn't do that.
Still the phone is a great phone and I plan on keeping it for a while.

I guess you tried to reboot the phone with nothing attached to the usb port but sd card in ?
My phone has never touched a computer until last night when I flashed back to 77.10.16 in hopes of fixing the problem. No go. I read online in a number of places stating that certain phone companies are locking sd cards if it's in during an ICS update. Sadly, this was a class 10 32gb sandisk and it seems like I'll be needing a new one.

Hey guys,
So, I just picked up the HTC one today. As I expected, the hardware is great, but I have to admit i'm really disappointed in the software. It feels like a child's toy. So few options. I'm coming from an Xperia Ion. I thought the software on that was terrible and limited but HTC's is worse. It obviously didn't take me long to flash my Ion. and it seems I'm not even willing to give the HTC 24 hours to flash it either. So, I'm used to Cyanogen Roms and other xperia specific roms which were awesome. But I see no stock android roms for the HTC One. All seem to have HTC Stock Roms and that's exactly what I don't want. I don't want to be limited by the choices HTC gives me.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of a Stock 4.1.2 or 4.2 android rom for the HTC. And if not, if you recommend any particular Rom considering the following:
1. I need LTE
2. I want a barebones phone that I can add what i need to, not the other way around. I hate these freakin manufacturers and their obsessive need to add crap to a perfectly fine platform. I'd get the nexus 4 is it's hardware was better and had LTE and didn't look like ****, but hey, that's not an option.
Things I hate about the One.
1. the phone dialer buttons are badly placed
2. no control over headset button actions - even with 3rd party apps
3. No menu button that I can find - yes I know each app has one, but it's not standard and that's annoying
4. Can't seem to find a recent apps/multi-task button
5. Bunch of home app features missing or just too limited - yes I know i can replace with a launcher
Recent apps/Multi-tasking: Quickly double tap the Home key to get this.
(As you may have noticed, long-press Home opens Google Search)
Multitask by double tapping the home button. But ya I flashed to trickdroid for the One and its still HTC stock, but it is alot better, Gives you the option of making the long hold on the back button a menu button.
There a few minimal roms in the development forum.
@kuroneko007 -- thanks for that. looked everywhere. I even tried double tapping a couple times, but seems my timing was off, which is just a testament to how bad an idea that is. Double tap incorrectly and you end up on the home page. No big deal, but all these little things just irk me. Ya, I had noticed the long press home feature.
@sdla4ever -- trickdroid will take a look. was really hoping there'd be a non HTC option, but i realize it's a very new phone and maybe there just hasn't been enough dev time just yet. I am hoping that'll change.
I saw a thread on an app called SwipePad, which will help with getting around the phone from anywhere with gestures, which is cool, so that might help a bit, but i just feel like there are a lot of details I was spoiled with on my previous roms that I'm just not getting here at all. Anyway, any other tricks and tips you guys have found that boost your productivity or provide more options, i'm always open to hearing.
Thanks for your input guys.

Look in the HTC One development forum there are ROMs that are even more minimal.
Give it a month or two. The phone has just been released and many people have not even got hold of their pre-ordered units yet.

Ya, I figured that was the case, but just thought I'd ask, on the off-chance i was missing something obvious. I wonder if Cyanogen will make a ROM for it. Of all the roms i've tried, I think i like the CM ones best, though not by much. SOme really good stuff out there.

My suggestion would be to install the Renovator ROM with the de-sense option in AROMA, then install Apex launcher and set gestures for actions you want such as menu and search...etc. Or you could give the CM from the ATT version a shot, but it seems to be an early build so there could be some loose ends right now.
I think this is a great phone the has some questionable design decisions from HTC in both the hardware and software. But everything can be somewhat dealt with with a little trial and error and research.

I found a much better way - I installed this kernel and disabled the three menu button menu - now use the htc logo as the menu button!
@apd - that's exactly what I mean. Sure the apps have their own menu area, but it's a waste of space and not always in the same place for every app, which is annoying and like you said takes up real estate. if one of the capacitive buttons could serve as the menu button, that would be awesome. As for the last reply, what do you mean you disabled the 3 menu button menu? I understand that it's possible to use the htc logo as a cap button, but what other button are you referring to that you disabled? You referring to the software/app buttons that show up in every app? Please explain. I wonder what roms that kernel works with. Will have to look into that.
@lilhaiti - i agree. phone is solid, but there are a few things that imo weren't done with much thought. I am and have used Apex for a couple years, and between that and Swipe Pad, I've covered most of the basics, tho, essentially I'm installing apps to do what the phone should be able to do from the start. Whatever, no big deal, but these details are still important to me. As for the CM, I'll wait. I'm not in a huge rush, but I'll definitely try it once it's stable.

qemu.hw.mainkeys=1

Hello.
Today, after update of apps on my galaxy tab s 10 lte, I did some research on just instaled updates, and suddendly, I got supprised, that switching between apps worked in other ways than always - on bottom of screen I got 3 icons on black background (just like here: aboveandroid.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/android-5.0-L-1.jpg]) and while swapping on that bottom I was switching between currently working apps
I don't have idea, how I got to that mode, and I don't know in which app I activated this mode, but it looks like somthing from andoid 5.0, which unplanned got to some app (on my tablet I have only applications from andoid market, from offical google profile). I have andoid 4.4.2 on my galaxy tab s
Have someone got the same mode? I liked it very much (it is much easier to switch between apps than standard button and choosing app), but I don't have idea how I got to it.
Can someone help?

I'm moving from the Note 4 to the Nexus 6. Note 4 started having random reboots, problems, etc.
1. Nexus 6, the volume button and power button are too close together/same side. Does anyone else fumble with these buttons?
2. Camera-doesn't seem to be anywhere near as good as the one on the Note 4, flash lights up the picture and it looks good, but when the picture actually takes, it is seconds after the flash has gone off.
3. Is there a way to put two languages on at once for texting? I am aware that I can put more than 1 on and toggle the 'spacebar' to switch from english to spanish, but, is there a way that it has both dictionaries going at once? Most of my texting is in two languages, and it's a real pain to have to switch back and forth in order to not have auto-correct go crazy and change my words. (or can someone suggest a messaging app they like that would do this?)
4. After using headphones and unplugging, sound will sometimes disappear until the phone is restarted.
5. Copying pictures from a text? On some of them i get a choice of "view picture" which takes it to a separate screen. But, from there, the 3 little menu buttons on the top left, when I click say "more options" and nothing else comes up? There is no way to copy it, forward it, etc.?
6. Is there a way to make the message alerts not vibrate so loudly? Is that adjustable?
1. Once in a while, but I have a habit of "double checking" the buttons
2.Have you tried using a camera with manual settings? Heard that the N6 camera wasnt that good but if you know what you are doing with manual settings, you can get a great shot
3. Have you tried swiftkey? I use it to be able to text my family in english and catala
4. Haven't had that issue
5. -------
6. Not sure, maybe if you root your device you can

I disagree. Other than the obvious point that the OP's post isn't breaking any XDA rules, the OP has not said that he doesn't like the device. All he is doing is asking for input from device owners regarding certain things he isn't used to. Perhaps you might try answering the questions instead of being crabby?

I haven't had an issue with this. Coming from a Galaxy S4 you would figure I would.
I've not encountered issues using the camera with flash. However, all things considered, the Nexus 6 camera is a small downgrade from the one in the Note 4. The Note 4 camera has a slightly larger aperture, which means more light can hit its sensor. That plus the backlit sensor and DIS to go with OIS do make for a better camera.
You could use Google Translate to translate your text before you send it, then add it to the existing text. However, typing in two different languages would require a keyboard where you could switch languages on the fly, and while I'm sure they exist, I'm not aware of any.
I've not encountered this.
Tap on the picture in Messenger. Next to the "share" icon you should have an icon that looks like a memory card. That's the "save" icon. The picture will save to a folder on internal storage. Other apps, including the AOSP messaging app, may have a completely different setup.
The vibration motor is very loud. You would need a custom ROM with (likely) a custom kernel to be able to adjust the vibration intensity.

You mean MMS? Because simple text message doesn't have pictures.

I disagree. Other than the obvious point that the OP's post isn't breaking any XDA rules, the OP has not said that he doesn't like the device. Thanks for your responses. It isn't so much the keyboard (for the dual language texting) but in my other phone I guess it worked two languages simultaneously in the dictionary so I could type "Go to the store and tell her you want "una soda sin hielo" " and it wouldn't try to change the last part of my text to words it thought i might be trying to type in English.
Also, thanks for your defense.
I'm certain some people will wonder how I can type without it, but the solution I found to that was to disable predictive text features in the keyboard.
I didn't buy this phone for the camera, texting abilities, or multilingual support. I bought because it is big, fast and most of all... it's a Nexus.
I can run a different rom every day if I want. Your Note 4 was having random reboots. If that happens with my Nexus 6 I just wipe it and install a different ROM. This flexibility is what makes Nexus (Pixel) devices great. IMHO.

Thanks, bg
Yes, I do like that part of it, haven't tried to do any custom roms on it yet. is there one you have that is a favorite? Also, (probably a stupid question, so bear with) how is it different to wipe and put in different rom on the Nexus as opposed to doing so on the Note?

As in? Were you running a custom ROM on the Note 4? Nexus is one of the most highly developed brands. If not the most. Factory images are readily available and many times after a new android version is released, custom ROMs for the Nexus are not far behind. There is no difference between installing a ROM on the Nexus 6 or the
Note 4. Availablity would be the factor.
I'm a fan of Bliss, Slim and Pure Nexus, to name a few. It mostly depends on the user and what they like.
