[Q] Flashing Roms - Preserving Text Messages - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First post, so sorry about a noob question. I searched and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.
I flashed ICS and now have no text messages. Is there any way that they can still be located, or did I just miss the boat in my upgrade path?
I have flashed roms before and they have carried over, so a little confused why I lost them now. I do use titanium backup. What I did:
I ran cognition 4.5.3 forever and finally decided it was time to try something new.
- I backed up all apps and data with Titatium Backup
- used the oneClick I897UCKI2 Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread with bootloaders
- Flash Fugu's Kernel, Phone went into boot-loop.
- Remove battery, go in DL mode again. Flash Boog's Kernel.
- Restored all apps + data (was using handscent for text)
* All Texts messages were there.
Then I decided to upgrade to ICS using SimplyAOKP V3.1 ~ ODEXED ~ 4.0.4
- I backed up all apps and data with Titatium Backup
- Used CWM to:Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache under advanced, and format system under mounts and storage
-Flashed V3.1 Dark Themed from zip in CWM
* No texts.. Restoring apps seemed to cause problems, so I did it again without restoring apps.
Is there any way for me to dig up my old text messages at this point?
What should I do in the future to preserve them when flashing roms?
Thanks for your help!

[Q] [i9000] CWM restore issue for Data

I was trying some new roms on SGS i9000 and before doing so I made a nandroid backup with CWM. Now after flashing the new rom I find out I forgot to backup some contacts from the phone and I try to restore the old backup from CWM, it is able to restore system, cache but data (which is around 900 Mbytes in itself) it proceeds till a certain part and hangs there, the most I left it was 45 minutes without further progress then I remove the battery and reboot.
My question(s):
- has anyone else seen similar issue, I have searched around and it seems there is a similar issue for other devices due to limitation in yaffs maximum number of objects = 10000, while for some backups that number is exceeded, and some guys overcome this limitation in CWM by modifying the CWM package and changing the Max objects parameters and reflashing, has anyone done similar work for SGS I9000
- is there a way to open the backup images files and extract the contact information?
Appreciate your support
Gam
Have you tried to format data, datadata, system and wipe cache, i had a similar problem once and that worked for me for some reason

Hi pzayx,
yes I tried wiping everything before restoring but I get the same behavior.
restore works with previous "smaller" backup images but not the one that i need
Thanks anyway,
gam
have you tried to flash the same rom that you were on when you took the backup, ive read some threads about people trying to restore a backup for 2.3.3 on a 2.3.5 system and got problems with restoring data.
might be a long shot, but you could try to flash the same rom you took a backup of, and then try to restore?
Yes, I already tried that as well but same response, the data restore freezes at the same point and if I remove battery and power on only part of the data and apps are restored.

[Q] [Help] Cocked up a Kies flash, wiped, best way to restore?

After not having plugged my phone into Kies for ages, I plugged it in this evening and was greeted with a lovely "Updated Firmware available!" message. I unplugged my phone and did a backup with TitaniumBackup, and also backed up my SMS with SMS Backup & Restore, then plugged it back in (copied the backup folders to my desktop, just in case) and then let Kies update me from XXJPY to XXJVO.
Unfortunately, I forgot to remove the SpeedMod Froyo kernal and ext4 lagfix I was using, and when it got the Recovery Mode bit, there were a couple of errors, and then it got stuck in a boot loop. Booted into Recovery and tried the "Wipe /cache partition" option which didn't work, so eventually had to resort to the "Wipe data and factory restore" setting which worked.
That's the back story, now for the question:
I have a (more-or-less) freshly installed stock ROM and kernel and a TitaniumBackup folder on the internal SD. What do I have to do to get everything back to how it was, if possible (installed apps, save game states e.g. Angry Birds etc, LauncherPro Plus settings, wallpaper etc)?
Is it simply a case of flashing a rooted kernel, installing TitaniumBackup and running the restore function, or is there more to it then that? If it is that simple, which am bestest kernel these days, SpeedMod GB? I've heard Semaphore mentioned a few times. I found used to crash a lot using SpeedMod on Froyo (never got more than 120 hours uptime) so something nice and stable would be nice, with Voodoo Sound and Colour, and possibly OC/UV again
Any help would be greatly, hugely appreciated

Thanks, but I'm not really looking for a new ROM, just want to get all my apps and settings etc back to how it was before.
Just for extra clarification, when I did the TiBackup, I ran the "backup all apps + system data" batch job and unticked most of the apps that were red (system apps I think), but may have left one or two in, would these cause issues?
Yes, get root and run titanium backup restore. Don't restore system apps, as you've changed roms and this can cause problems.

Flashed Semaphore kernel last night, rooted and restored from TitaniumBackup fine (getting a few force closes from some apps, but I'll work around that), and it's all back exactly how it was. Very happy

[Q] ICS_Stunner_1.4.26.1

Hi
i have just flashed ICS_Stunner_1.4.26.1 onto my Note.
Its amazing, I love it.
I have changed the dpi to 189 and changed it to forced landscape with 10 x 10 icon layout.
It was working fine the whole day and now when I turned on my phone the icons are cut in half. Not sure how to fix this?
Secondly I flashed from GB 2.3.6 with abyss kernal... they say you must charge battery to full then discharge empty and then charge to fill and delete some battery config. Is this true?
What would your path of action be when flashing a new rom? Also how do I restore all my contacts? I made a complete backup using titanium backup (system, apps & data) when I was on my root stock rom...
I got a few questions there and hopefully I can be pointed in the right directions...
One final question, if I wanted to try out KingDroid rom. How would I do it coming from this ICS Stunner Rom?

I follow the procedure suggested by xda thread when I change from ICS rom to another ICS or GB rom:
1. download AbyssNote 4.2 kernel and place it on your internal/external SD Card
Also download the ICS Rom you want to install and put it on your SD card.
2. reboot to CWMR and do a backup of your current system
3. after your backup is done, stay in Recovery
4. go to install a zip from SD card --> select AbyssNote 4.2 zip and flash it
5. go back to CWMR's root menu --> advanced --> reboot recovery
6. you'll find yourself in AbyssNote's Touch Recovery
7. factory reset --> wipe cache --> wipe dalvik
9. flash the ICS Rom of your choice
10. reboot and let the Rom settle for a couple of minutes
I have no problem with this procedure so far.
If you want to be absolutely safe, you will use PC Odin back to stock Gingerbread, root it, then flash a safe rom/kernel combo. Abysskernel will work, but it's not 100% safe.
Your contacts should be restored if you had them synced with Google (Settings --> Accounts).
When you restore with TI Backup (if you do) don't restore anything system wise. Just apps and data with them only. If you have bugs, you will have to re-flash and NOT restore apps.
ok concerning my contacts... i didnt sync them with google... i know silly me. it was on the phone.
So doesn't titanium backup copy them anywhere.
I have made backup of my rom with cwm... would that contain my contacts if i restored that backup?
was its either use cwm which isnt 100% safe or use pc odin and stock gb...
Could i just restore the backup of my gb rom and then flash from there to a ics?
Use PC Odin back to gb stock prerooted, the stunner use a bad kernel i think and wipe can cause emmc to break?, so i suggest using PC odin back to stock prerooted gb , then follow some guides ( i used abysskernel ) then Asylum as its same and good rom!

If you restore "Phone" and Contacts app + data with TI backup, it MIGHT restore them but no guarantees.
You can restore the backup of your GB rom IF you are NOT using CWM on a stock ICS rom. Use Abyss Kernel to restore nandroid backup. Flash Abyss. Reboot recovery. Restore nandroid.
Go to stock ICS OR franco, speedmod, or CM9 kernels or a CM9 build.
ok I flash abyss kernel via cwm... then advance reboot recovery... restored my backup via cwm... merged my phone contacts with google...
Then i got curious about Kingdroid v2.0 with s3 add ons. So I downloaded that and flashed it via cwm... the play store wasnt downloading apps but i could browse internet, so reflashed abyss kernal via cwm and re flashed ics stunner...
I am back on stunner now. I prefer to look of this rom. So i guess as long as your flash abyss kernel you should be fine with flashing different roms and retaining root?
Just need to find out about the battery issue... when flashing a new rom what do you do concerning the battery to ensure correct % and charge...
edit: currently on Kernel : 3.0.15-I9220ZCLP6-CL343671
should i flash to one of the kernels you mentioned above?
also still having problem with cut off icons with apex set at 10x10 in landscape mode...
ok i think i has figured out the solutions...
At current apex doesn't support icon resizing so i changed my layout to 6 x 6 for now.
also was having problem making calls, it kept fc. I found out somewhere that if you use 160dpi you can use a fix or change to 200dpi and you don't need a fix and it works and still looks awesome.
I am very happy with this rom thus far... otg works which is a plus. I think i will use it for a week or so and then try the next one...
flashing roms is like eating pringles... once to flash you can't stop
Dont take me wrong dude but all these fixes including the call fc are in the stunner page,if u read everything before flashing u will not have problems and if u do, u would know how to solve yourself...and be careful restoring nandroids from cwm, flash abyss, then restore.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Also for the playstore,u could only clean the caches in my apps or change the dpi that would work

hahaha why would i take it the wrong way?
but seriously there are like 500 pages... and sometimes your searches are using the right key words. But yip I will try my best not to ask questions that have already been answered... even tho those answers are hidden in the mine that is xda...
With time you learn to navigate such a mine without feeling lost and confused but i am still a wee padawan
Yes always flash abyss first ALWAYS

SGS i9000 ICS upgrade

Hi all, last night I flashed this ROM to my phone I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA and then flashed ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.2_I9000 over the top. This all appeared to go well and booted up ok.
I then used TB to restore the backup of apps etc to use in ICS. TB ran as expected and the progress bar showed that all the apps had been restored.
From here I went to the launcher page > applications to check the icons were there and guess what ----- no piffing icons.
Searching the file system I could not find any reference to ANY of the restored apps from TB.
So !!!!!, what would be the correct way to restore a TB backup in ICS 4.0.3. Things like the sdcard seem to be in different locations also.
If some kind soul could work with me to resolve the problem that would be great. On or off list.........
If your TB backup was made with Gingerbread then you can't use it for restoring in Ice Cream Sandwich.

You could restore apps only, not data. There are several tutorials in the development section, for each custom I9000 custom ICS ROM, check them out.
Try another install, wiping again cache and factory reset and try to restore only apps, not apps data.

This applies for CM9 ICS, but is pretty general for other ROM's as well, unless they have specific requirements:
- First time flashing ICS to your Galaxy S (or coming from another ROM)?
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Reboot into Recovery using 3-button-combo
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon
WIPE again or Calendar Sync will not work.
- Upgrading from CM7?
Do a Nandroid Backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon
- Upgrading from another CM9 (or teamhacksung) Build?
Do a Nandroid Backup!
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon
Note: The upgrade process from CM7 to ICS is automatic, but downgrading from ICS to CM7 (or restoring Nandroid) requires flashing twice. Once from ICS and again from CM7's recovery.

Please note that this might not apply for your specific ROM and you might brick your phone if things go wrong.
Ideally try to find the specific instructions for your ROM.

[Q] CWM Recovery - restore from backup - only data?

Hi Guys.
I haven't worked much with CWM so far and couldn't find a proper answer in the threads here.
When I do a restore from a CWM backup I've not seen an option to choose just data or apps ... so I suppose the whole system including the rom and kernel will be restored. right?
As I'm happy to have CM 10.1 running after all finally, I'd just like to restore the data (SMS, etc.) from a CWM backup. Is there a possibility to do so?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers
I don't think you can do that. I used titanium backup pro to restore only the apps+setting to do that.

Ok, thanks. Should have thought about it before.... Sometimes fingers are faster than the brain.

You can do an advanced restore and just restore /data but it's not recommented to do this coming from stock and restoring on CM I guess...

Stock and CM use different bases, and therefore restoring data of Stock can bring over some incompatible data/apk's and this can and most likely will cause a bootloop, from reading i think i can establish the safest way when your changing Rom's is to full wipe and 'clean' install. However when going from nightly to nightly this is not needed, and some data can be restored between same android version Rom's, for example CM10.2 is 4.3.1, data may work on slimbean 4.3.1.
Hope this clears things up for you.
I would also suggest to do a clean install without data recovery. If you want your data you can use Titanium Backup for App data. For the other personal stuff you can make a backup to your PC..

CWM Recovery, URGENT REPLY!!
I faced this problem that my rom got stuck on boot image, so I had another custom rom zip in my sdcard, so to install that I had to format my phone, now I have that backup and I only want to restore system settings, apps, app data, my data(sms, call logs and stuff), I dont want to restore the system or anything else which will make it get stuck on boot image again, now which choices shall I choose in advanced restore to restore only these specified items?
Please reply urgently as I have to travel in a few days and I wont be able to do it over there.
Cheers
