Okay, another question that makes me feel kinda dumb.
How can I improve my N1's performance?
Specifically, how in the world do I get my nexus even close to the N1's I see on Linpack's "Top Devices"?
I'm running diet_2.6.33.2.hybrid_avs_925mv_OC with cyanogen 5.0.6. I can get 7.778 MFLOPS. Honestly, I don’t even know what that means. All I know is that I want more. Or do I? Does it even make that much of a difference in everyday usage?
I've noticed that in the JIT thread under development they talk about getting up to 17 MFLOPS, but no one really explains what JIT is or does. Just that it's unstable and that if your not sure what it is, you don't need it.
I can benchmarkPi in 2790 - how in the hell do I get it lower? Under the rom description of some of the top 50 they mention JIT and experimental kernels, but there's not much room for more than just the generic names of them. Where do I get these magical roms and kernels? Do I even want them? Are they so unstable that they can only be used to gain geek cred on some benchmark lists and once they hit the "high score" they explode in flames? Do I need safety goggles before I flash the update.zip?
Seriously though, I know I'm not the only one with these questions - so any info would help. And do me a favor, please do not respond to say that if I don't know - I don’t need to know. At one point, you didn't know either. No one was born with this knowledge.
I know there is a very bright person on here that is willing to take a couple of minutes to shed some light on us simpletons. I'd like to thank you in advance. Thanks.
Even if you get higher linpack scores, you will barely notice any difference in your devices performance... That's why I tend to ignore it. If its possible to get faster than Cyanogen ROMs (not in terms of linpack) I don't know how different things would be.. im curious about how quick Froyo is though.
Oh and have you searched, Jit has been covered in more places than just xda developers, several times it has been discussed I believe.. while using it, my Linpack scores did get into the double digits though - but this (not even that noticeable actually) speed increase was not worth the random reboots, and such. When Jit is stable though, it will be quite nice.. hopefully Froyo has it.
Linpack number did not make any differences in overall usage . Now, I am using my own UV kernel and setcpu max freq to 500MHz.. only... but, I still able to get 26.8 fps in Neocore's 3D benchmark. Playing games, 3D or not, still smooth and fluid.
I also waiting for Froyo and hope we can get even efficient and fast OS.
TQ.
Hi guys..
I sad Google developed 2.2 to improve snapdragon cpu and becuase of that the benchmarks shows 3X faster cpu on nexus,
will work 2.2 on galaxy like nexus ? or not for SGS cpu!
at all what you think about power of CPU/GPU in SGS on 2.2 ?
Is nexus cpu better than galaxy on Android 2.2 ?
The Galaxy's CPU/GPU is the best on the market right now and with 2.2 it should fix a lot of software problems with the SGS.
Actually can't wait for 2.2, and it's released around about my birthday!
When is your birthday
22nd September mate. You can buy me a Galaxy S as a spare if you want
well I have to see it first.
Guess Samsung finds a way to **** up the phone again i'm sure of that.

If froyo on the SGS sucks, then the chefs in here will cut it open and make it run properly and it won't matter what the FW was like when samsung sent it out. Also, TouchWiz is fine, even if it does have a dumb name.
I have been worried about this. The sgs line and droid line do not get over 15 in linpack with 2.2. I dont see the same increase in speed as I do with snapdragon based phones. I have read this is due to the snapdragon having 128 bit vs 64 bit something but cant find the forum post about this. The sgs line with 2.1 is still faster then a 2.2 snapdragon based phone but it must have the lag fix installed. Without the lag fix it is slower for sure. I will try to find the forum post about 128bit vs 64bit.

Linpack can run almost entirely within the SIMD/NEON portion of the cpu thereby showing off the enhancements made by Qualcomm. Quadrant stresses the entire core showing off total system performance showing that only in certain situations will Snapdragon outperform any other Arm based core.

From what I've seen and read, the 2.2 builds for the Galaxy S do NOT have a JIT compiler enabled which explains the lower scores. The N1 got the huge CPU boost from having JIT enabled. That doesn't explain the Droid X's scores, but then again I haven't read enough about 2.2 running on the DX to see if it has JIT installed.
What're you think? I'll buy SGS 2.1 or wait for SGS 2.2 ?
It's very important to buy most powerfull phone.
I like Nexuse cus it's tested sucssasfuly in Android 2.2 and I'm gono love SGS if it will be better than nexus in 2.2.

I would wait at this time before purchasing an SGS if that's your concern.
Out of the box, the current phone/software is laggy and disappointing. If you're willing to hack it with some of the various fixes found here (I prefer samset with mimocan kernel), then you won't be unhappy with the phone, but there's no guarantee that Samsung will get FroYo right, and that if they do get it wrong that the devs here will be able to bring you a hot, non-laggy, super FroYo ROM before there's better, or at least comparable hardware done right by the manufacturer available.
That's no reflection on the devs here at all, I'm just thinking that Samsung won't release the firmware until the end of September, the devs will need a couple of weeks to make magic at least, and so now we're well into October. By October, the SGS will be a six month old phone. Six months is a very long time in the Android hardware world, and we'll likely see a landslide of new phones with faster CPU, maybe even dual-cores in the fall for the holiday season. The only thing the SGS will have over other phones at that point is the Super AMOLED screen by Samsung, since they're holding it all to themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if Moto or HTC try to kang the iPhone display tech for newer models if they can't get Super AMOLED for themselves.
In the android world it is nearly impossible to but a device that won't be out of date within at most a year and sometimes within 6 months.
Having said that, I don't see anything that will topple the sgs quite that soon. Although there is talk of dual core snap dragons, there has been nothing announced yet, and indeed the two new Desire handsets are still on the same chip.
I wouldn't expect to see anything that will have more raw power than the sgs until at least mid 2011. If there was anything closer than that it'd already be getting hyped.
If you keep looking at what is just over the horizon then you won't end up ever getting one, because there always seems to be something new out in a few months time. The sgs isn't prefect, but it beats the hell it of most anything that you'll be able to buy this year.
My humble opinion of course, but I think that if you want top end hardware, the sgs will serve you very well.

Based on your responses so far, I'd just get an iPhone 4 and be done with it.
There are a lot of people here and elsewhere who are perfectly happy with the device. I for one haven't installed the lag fix and I don't experience any lags, except for the situations below:
1. I'm trying to do something while there are several apps being installed/downloaded from the marketplace in the background. I think this will be resolved with the dualcore next gen CPU's.
2. Using LauncherPro, for all that is good and nice on this earth, I do not know why it took me 3 months before the option to change the shortcut on its drawer was shown to me. Imagine that, 3 months just to show the option to add a shortcut. Jeezus. I click on add shortcut and it took 3 months. Someone shoot me. I'm using ADW now and am very happy.

The hummingbird core is widely recognized to be faster than the snapdragon core. Benchmarks do not tell you everything. Reference:
You might think that the Hummingbird doesn’t stand a chance against Qualcomm’s custom-built monster, but Samsung isn’t prepared to throw in the towel. In response to Snapdragon, they hired Intrinsity, a semiconductor company specializing in tweaking processor logic design, to customize the Cortex-A8 in the Hummingbird to perform certain binary functions using significantly less instructions than normal. Samsung estimates that 20% of the Hummingbird’s functions are affected, and of those, on average 25-50% less instructions are needed to complete each task. Overall, the processor can perform tasks 5-10% more quickly while handling the same 2 instructions per clock cycle as an unmodified ARM Cortex-A8 processor, and Samsung states it outperforms all other processors on the market (a statement seemingly aimed at Qualcomm).

Here is a GPU comparison for some of the leading smartphones:
Motorola Droid: TI OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX530 = 7-14 million(?) triangles/sec
Nexus One: Qualcomm QSD8x50 with Adreno 200 = 22 million triangles/sec
iPhone 3G S: 600 MHz Cortex-A8 with PowerVR SGX535 = 28 7 million triangles/sec
Samsung Galaxy S: S5PC110 with PowerVR SGX540 = 90 million triangles/sec

You can't really say froyo is over hyped, I mean its free, and beyond that its an incremental upgrade.
I don't see why anyone would be staying on eclair once official froyo drops, and you can't deny that it will bring a performance boost.
Now I doubt it will bring quite as much of a boost as it gave to the N1 until we get a few months of development to really get it running sweetly, but all the same its still not over hyped if I ask me.
With optimized ROMs and whatever fixes we need (cuz samsung WILL break something) I figure the sgs will shred the N1's new scores. I recon we'll see around 3k in quadrant.
Considering how far ahead of almost everything a lag fixed non-stock-rom sgs is now, we'll see something really special once froyo starts rocking our crotches.

Why powerfull phone? ok i'll tell u:
Because I don't like to buy an expensive phone (like SGS) that power is lesser than a chipper phone (like N1) !
Because I'd rather a phone without stalling (lagging) to play games and running big applications. I will very gray if i'll se lagging/stalling...
Because I need a phone with a good support (it's enough, don't need mazing support). a phone with a clear (alive or nice) Future
JIT for Hummingbird should be promising.

anyone got any idea on the high mem issue?... when i was browsing the Gmarket.com, i realize 305 total available memory is not enough for me... and the web page just closed....
Hello, I am about to buy an android phone, after patiently waiting a half year (because I've been scammed when I attempted to buy an iPhone)
So, I really love phones with a qwerty keyboard and I live in Europe.
The only phone I like right now is the Milestone, but motorola is really being a pain in the ... against us european costumers, but at least they promised us the froyo update at last. (probably because they had to, it said "Flash 10.1 compatible" on the box.)
So my question is, what is your advice for me? If I wait for the MS2 I will have 2.2 for sure, but I'll have to wait for the device to get rooted..
Right now I can buy the Milestone at a 2 year 15€/month contract. It's retail price is € 387,-
Does anyone have any idea at all about the milestone 2 pricing?
I would like to play some games on the phone like N.O.V.A. and Asphalt 5 by gameloft. But from what I've seen, the multi-touch is reaaaly messed up. Is this correct?
Greetings, Mike vHL
For myself i decided to wait Milestone 2. Buy new phone, when there is a upgrade of him its not reasonable.
Sorry for my bad english =).
Thanks, but after watching a movie, I found out that the only thing that was changed that was really of impact to me was the processor, RAM and keyboard layout.
The processor doesn't make that much of a deal to me, since the games are still quite responsive. The keyboard layout isn't that much of a deal to me either. The ram would be nice, sure, but I don't care, since I've waited too long and really want an android phone, right now xD
About the multitouching thingy, the MS2 uses the same screen, so that isn't a deal-breaker either. I'm sorry for bothering the community with my stupid question.
Greetings, Mike vHL

I think that the new version of milestone its a work on the bugs.
I like new proc, keyboard and ram. That why i decide to whait for the new phone.
if there were no major hardware flaws, then its not really work on bugs rather than a work on buyers pocket with a 2 on the end
I myself plan to get milestone 1 even if 2 comes out, for the following reasoning
- milestone 1 prices should drop radically
- anything they have to offer on mile2 would be an overkill for me, cause I dont even plan playing games
- design of mile1 blew me off with metal finish
- last but not least - I used all androids from 1.6version till froyo on my kaiser and tbh if they release 2.2 for mile1 with all features working well, I dont need anything else xD
Get a Milestone 1. It may sound crazy, but i "upgraded" to a Milestone from a Nexus one. Sure, the Nexus had a snapdragon, 512RAM and proper froyo roms, but the Milestone has an ARM Cortex-8 wich can go beyond 1.2Ghz with absolute reliability while the Nexus was already unstable at 1.1Ghz, it has a PowerVR GPU wich beats the crap out of the snapdragon gpu even at the default 550Mhz. I don't know who told you about the buggy multitouch, but i can tell you that the Milestone has accurate multitouch compared to the Nexus that has a serious problem that snaps axis when they get close and mess everything arround. Seriously the milestone performance is almost unbeliebable and besides that, it's got a qwerty keyboard, i have seen better keyboards (HTC Universal) but at least we have one. Once we get a proper froyo release on the Milestone, you will forget about every other single phone, but for now you can use the latest MotoFrenzy if you dont care about the camera issue, or stick arround with the good old 2.1 releases.
Edit: Ah, sorry i forgot to mention the sound quality and built-in speakers. The Milestone has the best sound quality out of all the Android phones i have tried so far. (HTC Dream, Hero, Nexus One, Xperia X10 and Desire).
Milestone2 would still have Cortex A8 ARM cpu not qualcomm snapdragon as far as I know. PowerVR should still be in the game too. the extra RAM is going to make some difference especially when more apps are running. Phone will definitely feel snappier even compared to 1.1GHz overclocked MS1 (like mine ). Not to talk its going to run Froyo which is supposed to make things even smoother.
If you want to save money - get original Milestone, if you are ok spending a bit more and willing to wait - wait for the Milestone 2. I would wait for MS2 if I were you.
I am told the updated cpu in the Droid 2 and Milestone 2 is smaller, faster, yet more battery efficient. I know the D2 gets like 9 hours of talk time vs 7 for the original Droid and that is CDMA, where it uses a bit more battery than GSM. Something to think about.
Snapdragon, A4, Samsung's 1GHz, and the Ti OMAP processors in the Droids are all based off ARM's Cortex A-8.
Newer phones are upgrades over the Milestone in regards to pure CPU speed and RAM, but all of them, except for the Milestone 2/Droid 2 with the same LCD, have inferior screens.
I consider it an "upgrade" to move from the Galaxy S to the Milestone because the latter has a much better and more usable screen, which is more important to me than anything else, but the Galaxy S does have incredible touch accuracy.
If you have the funds, then the Milestone 2 is definitely a worthy upgrade. Personally, I wouldn't change my Milestone to anything else other than the Milestone 2, an international Droid X (due to its improved CPU, RAM, and camera), and the iPhone 4 --all of which are far more expensive.
Droid X has the same amount of ram, and same exact cpu as the D2. The camera is an upgrade but it isn't that big of an upgrade from what I have read.
The Milestone2 is definitely just another Milestone but with improvements.
Both devices have the same connectivities, same screens, same features and same physical hardware. The differences are
The biggest one is:
512MB RAM vs 256MB. The new processor will run faster and can multitask much better.
Next important thing is the camera difference, its the same 5MP shooter but it now does 720p video.
After that the next important thing is the physical hardware/keyboard: personally the Milestone does have a good qwerty so I'm not sure if this is an advantage or just a tie.
The last upgrade is the CPU: 1GHz vs 550MHz stock (O'C to 1.2GHz to surpass in performance).
Honestly, you can wait ~1month from now you can get the MIUI ROM (in development by dexter and the official miui team - better than MotoBlur)
with Froyo (so it will be tie),
800MHz (this is to increase battery life while giving good performance - better than Milestone2).
Or wait ~1month to get the Milestone2 and the only advantages it really would have is the 720p video and the extra performance and multitasking (from extra RAM). If you want the GameGripper for the Droid2/Milestone2 you will also need to wait for it.
The Milestone2 will get the locked bootloader so development on it will be slow or non-exsistant. If however it gets rooted and its ROM extracted, I'm guessing the camera stack will easily be ported to the original Droid/Milestone for 720p. The only thing is the Droid/Milestone would need to be overclocked (800MHz +) to be able to capture 720p video and that may not even be enough, maybe the RAM will be the limiting factor.
Well there's the information, now go make up your mind
Actually the biggest difference is the CPU, which is faster and give it longer battery life.
But the M1 can be overclocked to match the M2 (or be close), but the 256Mb RAM limitation cannot be improved. I personally have few problems with 256 megs, but with 512, you pretty much never need to close any apps.
That maybe so, but the M2 cpu while smaller is more efficient, and faster(plus the better gpu that comes with newer chipset).
The possibilty of Android 2.2 speed improvements made us Vibrant owners salivate in anticipation for the JIT compiler but didnt see a significant increase in performance like it did with the nexus one. One thing that could eliminate lag in addition to lag fixes is optimization of JIT for our CPU hardware. We would like a proactive effort for developer to investigate for the above avg user. (Non-Developers) JIT Optimization = Higher Linpack MFLOPS
I think we're getting it in gingerbread =p

thank you.....and plus i kno about the myth of high linpacks = better performance. i said "JIT optimization = High linpacks". High Linpack is a side affect of the performance increase. The nexus One performance has jumped exponentially from 2.1 to 2.2 because of the JIT optimization of the Snapdragon in theory, it should do the same for the vibrant as well. Everybody's phone reacts to sofware differently. think im lying, ask the ppl who had vibrants that couldnt OC like the rest like myself or ppl who cant have Voodoo. Trust me lil boy i aint nowhere a noob. Please take ur trollism to some1 else who dont kno wtf theyre talkin about. Actually G2 is the fastest phone on the Market FYI despite being clocked at @806MHz w/o root. If i really wanted to get another phone, i wouldnt be posting stuff like this or being an active poster in a Vibrant forum right? Right????? Checkmate....
1 last thing...f##k yo couch
This has been discussed before, certain Qualcomm chips are better optimizer for arithmetic calculations than the Hummingbird it. It means nothing in real world usage, where the Galaxy S variants still dominate (with a "lag" fix, of course)
Still, despite obvious advantages of Qualcom's CPU, the Hummingbird still can benefit from software optimizations of JIT to efficiently interface the hardware. Performance may not jump like it did w/ the N1, but it would help. Just like a car w/ 600 HP. A car w/ that amount of power is just useless unless it efficiently gets ALL that power to the tires right? same concept applies.
We are not getting it in gingerbread. The snapdragon have faster FPU performance due to a 128 bit SIMD FPU datapath compared to Cortex-A8's 64 bit implementation. Both FPUs process the same SIMD-style instructions, the snapdragon just happens to be able to do twice as much.

Couldn't disagree more. I've also used just about every Tmobile compatible android smartphone. I currently have a Vibrant and I wish I would have kept my N1. And I almost pulled the trigger on trading in this POS for a G2 but the financial loss was just too great. I've yet to try any Bionix based MOD that was worth a damn. Not a one. Admittedly I've quit trying but I can't imagine much has changed.
The only thing keeping me from throwing this phone in the ocean some days is Cyanogen's team is getting close. I'm running the beta on a Euro SGS I have. Hate it as much as the Vibrant but I'm hopeful CM can save this phone from a sledgehammer.

Please, stop embarrassing yourself. The Nexus One is and was a great phone, but the Vibrant is better in almost every way. Better hardware, bigger screen, better screen, faster, and more units sold.

Wonderful analogy. I however do not love my Vibrant. I love the hardware and screen but because Samsung pulls the strings, usually I want to drop kick the thing because of it's limitations, instability and overall suck of the Samsung ROM. And yes, pretty much all the mods to it on here. Though Axura is about the closest thing my phone actually likes.
What makes you even think the Galaxy S line is even going to see Gingerbread? This is Samsung we are talking about...

Htc fell off and google knows it,thats why the new nexus is made by samsung, htc may have pioneered android but there sound always sucked and right now samsung kinda controls the display game, nobody else can produce super amoled and there abou to release super amoled 2,admitidly samsung has a bad rep for not supporting current models(i.e. The whole behold 2 debacle.) And words can't describe how much I hate motorola, htc is still good but I wouldnt call them the android kings,I feel samsung has alot of potential to become the flagship brand for google.

Oh Ye of little faith.......... Get real I have had almost every phone on the market (I can afford to buy what I want when I want) and after so many this has come closet to what I've been looking for especially since the 2.2 roms are out. My Biggest complaint about people knocking the phone is they always blame the phone for their poor flashing skills. This phone rocks and it is flexible enough to allow gingerbread whenever it arrives. Try that with a DroidX or HD7......(you fill in the name)....BTW I have a FFC and talk over 3g on it using tango without lag. I just need to make it so I can video a call to a computer and I am golden.
Bottomline..........this is a great phone........that is why there are so many devs playing with it.

thank you.....and plus i kno about the myth of high linpacks = better performance. i said "JIT optimization = High linpacks".

You, my friend, are not very smart. This thread needs to be closed or moved to general. Just as you would make an idiot of yourself trying to argue relativistic quantum mechanics with physicists, you are doing now.
This thread got interesting. As has already been said the Snapdragon benefits from JIT more because of its 128bit SIMD. While I am sure there is probably some room left to optimize JIT for the Hummingbird I wouldn't expect anything near the gain the N1 saw. I guess it is good or bad depending on how you look at it but the latest 2.2 ROMs floating around is as good as it gets regarding 2.2 and JIT. Don't expect much if any gain there.
But lets face it in the real world the phones perform about the same which leaves me to believe the benchmarks are that much more meaningless because they usually don't test things you actually use the phone for. Some of them would have you belive the N1 is twice as fast as the SGS and anyone with a grasp on reality just knows that isn't true. This also makes me curious when I read about people saying their phones are slow. It makes me wonder what they have done to them to slow them down because even on the stock ROM my phone was pretty snappy. And on Onyx 4.2 my phone is blazing fast with no lag fix or OC! Seriously this ROM is crazy smooth and fast and everything works.
Don't expect much from CM that you can't already get in the 2.2 ROMs floating around here. CM will still be RFS and they are using the same lag fix as everyone else here and really there isn't much of an advantage to their ROM as long as that is the case. Sure they will have features that you won't see in other ROMs here but overall I expect the CM ROMs will perform about the same as the SGS source based ROMs.
As I have already said I think this phone is fast but if there is any real speed gain to be had it will be accomplished by replacing RFS with something more efficient.

From what I understand cm for the vibrant still has a lot of proprietary samsung stuff in it, because otherwise it just wouldn't work.

Hey guys
I know their probably another thread out there with this in it but... Yeah. But go ahead troll me lol, im still a bit of a noob.:silly:
Anyways, i have a Galaxy Ace s5830. I have Beats with smooth sense ROM. I had it upto 883MHz Yesterday but after i turned it off then back on ROM Toolbox reverted it to 806MHZ. 883MHz seemed a lot faster even though some people get theirs close to 1GHZ
My phone afterwards rebooting had issues such as the phone becoming un-responsive when i was even doing nothing (maybe the overclock to 883MHz had some short term effect?) But the phone seemed fine after safely turning it off then back on several times. Still works perfectly i got scared when it started to become un-responsive. But it works well now i have also used pimp my ROM, and the scripts work like a charm. Especially the call quality one (it uses bravia engine or something?). But with pimp my ROM wi-fi and network tweaks it completely broke wi-fi saying wi-fi connecting... Then saying under the network name 'Error'. Dam it took so long to get the IP address then said error like i said lol
At the frequency 883MHZ the phone seemed stable and faster than ever before, i did change it in small increments
So just wondering, what is the safe and most reliable frequencies to set it at? I currently use 225Min and 806 Max. With the userspace governer.
I know the terms of ' Safe ' and overclock don't mix (sorta like water and my dads S2 :crying: ).
Im also considering buying a 2450MAH battery from ebay for about 5.99 AUD. Any suggestions on should it be okay and better? But i mainly would like to knwo about the overclcoking lol.
So yeah, basically what is a good frequency to set it at? Is 883MHZ okay? Am i going to fry it out or completely brick or damage the phone or cpu if i set it at 883MHZ? Would love to buy a new phone but i need to save im only 14
So yeah please help me and you could help others too. Please be welcomed to troll me
I plan on having this phone another 3-4 Months before i consider buying the S2 or Galaxy note when their cheap (like really cheap)...
Like i said please help, and feel welcomed to troll me when you do help :highfive:

That battery is a fake and has been confirmed as such. If you want a higher cap. battery get a 1500mAh or 1600mAh. I don't like messing with the clocking, good luck to you.
Thanks

Thank you for informing me that the battery is a fake ... But the seller has like 96%/100% seller rate or something?
Thanks for all your help, i hited like
Sorry for my 'Noobiness'.
What battery do you reccomend? or should i consider getting a AA battery to USB power charger?
i'm pretty comfortable with 825 or 844 mhz
It's pretty good with 614 MHz lol

Right now I am just using the stock one. I personally wouldn't change my battery to anything other than stock, but people have reported that 1500mAh or 1600mAh work well. I wouldn't use anything that has a higher capacity than that though. Also, if it's very inexpensive it's probably not real.
Clocking actually goes on the rom. I've seen people having OC over 1gHz & still stable with the mad kernel but I gave up clocking as I didn't see much of a difference & also underclocking started giving me FCs on some heavy apps while it was all fair in the unclocked state. And again, there's no such thing as a best frequency. You find your own values. What works well for him might mess up your phone rebooting all by itself. Stock batteries are always fine & they also keep you under warranty. Anyone ever wondered why the phone manufacturers didn't implement clocking as a part of it ? Stability is the word. I've seen here, I've seen there. East or west, stock is the best ! Try keeping as close to stock as possible, just to have that extra touch of safety & stability

Hello all.
I was reading this thread and became interested in overclocking. In my case my device is:
Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830L (labeled as GT-S5830 by CyanogenMod)
CyanogenMod-7.2.0-cooper stable (Android version 2.3.7)
Kernel 2.6.35.7-perf-CL882825 ([email protected] #21)
I was checking in CM settings -> Performance -> CPU settings that I could adjust min and max clockspeed, but in max frequency the maximum one is the same processor's speed, 800 MHz. So my kernel doesn't support overclocking.
After a search in the forums I found there are plenty of custom kernels for this legacy device. But I'm relatively new to the kernel world, so I wanted to ask you for advise. What custom kernel could I try for my device for overclocking? Or King Android, what custom kernel are you using?
It'd the first time I do the overclocking stuff, I'd like to try it to see if some higher quality mp4 videos (which are run by MX Player only in software acceleration) can run better, as well as some games and emulators.
I'm also kind of a noob as you can see. If you want to troll/scold me...
Thank you all.

Hi you can try FireKernel or BlackHawk kernel. Use the search function to find them easily. Both supports Overclocking and are made for CM7. [MAKE SURE THEY SUPPORT YOUR S5830L]
At the moment I'm with Democracy ROM which is based on unofficial CM7 and I don't really feel the need of overclocking. It is all smooth with firekernel at
Min 245
Max 806
Governor smartassv2
Sent from my... oh wait, who cares?
I did my search.
Maybe I forgot to mention I haven't installed a custom kernel before... Does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I already mentioned what CM7 I have installed. It's the "official" stable one.
Would OCing help to improve videos and games performance? i.e, faster, no lag...
You can set it to whatever your phone can handle. Mine can't go past 844Mhz otherwise apps start force closing and such. If your phone is completely stable at 883Mhz then you're good.
As for the battery, no. It's a fake. Buy a 1500mAh like I did. Works like a charm and it brought 3. Lasts a little longer and it's really amazing. Had it for a while now. Still have one in the pack, only been using 2 when I don't get to charge my phone. Really handy.

OCing helps the phone over all. But remember, without much free ram, OC won't really change much. You need a balance of ram and CPU. Like me, I use swap and OC to 844Mhz. Even if it's a low OC, it's still better than nothing.
1. @SuperAce609: I have 104 Mb free RAM out of 278 Mb total RAM. Mine is Galaxy Ace S5830L with CM 7.2. Would OC work for me? Up to what frequency?
And how can you have 600 Mb of RAM? Is your device really an Ace?
2. There's still a doubt I haven't been able to find out myself: does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I was suggested FireKernel or BlackHawk ones...
Any help?

1.- Every Ace is diferent..some Ace's can go up to 960 Mhz while other just 844 Mhz, the thing is: try it yourself overclocking in small jumps. Swap is a small amount of memory of your SD card, that Android use it like if where RAM, but decreases SD card life...
2.- Some Kernel came Built in on Some particullary ROM's but generally cames on a CWM Flashable zip; FireKernel & BlackHawk are specially for CM7; In my opinion FireKernel is the best... And there are others like Battery Extender Kernel or NimsKernel but these Kernel are only for Stock ROM's...
I hope you find useful my info...
Thank you, Blake2893.
Then there's just 2 doubts left, if you don't mind.
There's a fair number of custom CM7.2 roms with FireKernel in the developer forum. Is there one you or someone else could say is the best in terms of stability and least number of bugs? Or is that something I should test myself in the S5830L?
The Ace S5830/S5830L has 278 Mb total RAM by default. If I understand well, you're implying I could modify SWAP partition in order to increase RAM and, probably if lucky, with this make OC work better. How can I do that? Do I also need a custom kernel/rom for that?
The best stable Roms so far are the stock GingerBread based ones... but if you aks me about CM7 there a few like Apocalypse rom(ICS styled ROM) with the FireKernel that suports swap I think...
and for Swap you only need a Kernel with Swap enabled and a SWAP Partition on your Sd card...
lets see im fine and stable with 979 mhz without reboot for 9 hours
overclock is depend on your hardware
best over clock freq.

Using CPU high frequencies is not recommended, your device's life will be reduced considerably
