Is official ICS for India available yet? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't own this phone. My father does. I have seen many people in India with official ICS. Is it available via Kies? I can't find it. It shows 2.3.6 as latest. Am I doing something wrong?
PS : My dad won't allow me to use ODIN on it. Forget rooting and custom ROMs.

Official ICS aren't going to be available. Samsung doesn't like us.
The latest version is 2.3.6 JW5.

Name me a single non-Nexus phone that came out around the same period (summer of 2010) as the I9000 that has an official ICS update. If not, stop moaning about it. All you people keep on complaining about how Samsung is bad with update, but did you forget that HTC didn't even want to release a GB update for the Desire?

You try understand my view for Samsung after reading few words by me.
You aren't right, I'm quite happy that we don't have official ICS. ICS ports from Nexus are almost perfect. What's more, GS II ICS is buggy and laggy so this is next benefit for us
And the last thing - Nexus don't have TouchWiz, next crap.
Undeniably, the fact that only small percent of i9000 users can have ICS isn't good. This is punishment for using crappy Kies

[Q] will samsung galaxy s get more updates ? or this is last

will samsung galaxy s get more updates or this update 2.3.3 XXJVK is last update ?
in my opinion after using JVK, it still got bugs (beta) and there will be more updates,
2.3.3 is
1st not officially released
2nd. other than Europe its not even leaked.
so logically yes I am expecting more updates...rest Time will tell
Samsung have the answer nobody else .
jje
3.0 honeycomb is for TABs. No way SGS's gonna get it. JVK is raw beta, sweeter versions are coming I guess.

2.3.3 will be the last update, jvk is not official so there will be a series of ROMs available via Kies.

Because his Desire wont be getting any updates in the future
On a more serious line, if the next updates will work on SGS the update will be taken into consideration... but as we know it SGS 2 is being released in the near future they will stop support for the sgs and focus on updating the sgs 2 to make people buy it
Sadly marketing and sales are everything for these companyes....
Why do some people think JVK was beta because of a few bugs? there have been far worse official kies releases in the past. It may well have been a beta just don't expect perfection if we do get another release, you'll only be disappointed. Personally JVK has been one of their better firmwares, I would gladly have this via kies. The only thing stopping me from using it is the lack of source and voodoo, anyway, I do believe we will have more updates, well I hope so anyway.

i think its weird that Samsung are still releasing more froyo versions so close to an official GB version release. With that in mind, hopefully there will be many GB versions from different regions around the world, just like froyo.... Wont hold my breath.
An additional question - Will the next android release (2.4?) be able to be adapted to SGS with no Samsung support e.g. CM8?
I think that we will continue to see more froyo builds for awhile, as not all carriers and regions will be upgrading to Gingerbread, or at least not at the same time.
Parallel to that I imagine over the next couple months the official Gingerbread firmwares will start, so like Froyo, we will have many different 2.3.3 builds from different regions to argue about and play with, likely appearing throughout 2011.
The next announced build is Ice Cream Sundae, that is 2.4. As this is said to be an extension of Gingerbread, I imagine it will work on the SGS, but as by the time it is released the SGS II will be out for several months, I wouldbe VERY surprised if we see an official Samsung SGS firmware based on 2.4 However, I am sure we will see some SGS ROMs based on 2.4 here in XDA, so do not fear...we haven't hit a dead end with this phone yet.
As for Honeycomb (3.0), it is optimized and designed from the ground up for tablets and larger screens so even if it could be ported to the SGS, I don't see why you would want it to be.
Well, after looking at the code for JVK olny for a few hours, Supercurio said on twitter that it has a major security flaw and that it probably is an unfinished version of the firmware that will be released officialy. Based on his track record I trust Supercurio.

Another Gingerbread firmwares - yes. Official Ice Cream firmwares - most probably no.
Truth is, nobody on here knows anything about future updates, the most anybody can do is speculate. If you had believed what people on here thought about the update probability for the Galaxy S upon its release, you wouldn't have believed we would even have froyo by now.
Wait and see.
As promised GB will be the last update to i9000
Hello Every one,
Gingerbread will be the final update for I9000,
The Version 2.3.X will be release to all the I9000 model.
There will be regular update for the Gingerbread only (Bug fix & Perfomance update).
Version 3.0 will be not given to i9000, But we can opt to Custom ROMS for V 3.0.
Samsung will constrate more on S2. Samsung Promised only Gingerbread for i9000. No more future OS update. (Gingerbread updates only)
I have heard that Icecream will be a merge of gingerbread and honeycomb and will be version 4.0

Samsung will have an easier time rolling our updates because they produce the nexus S which is essentially a glorified stock GT-i9000. It'd be bad PR to stop producing updates. Samsung knows that if they want people to buy their new phones they have to support their previous ones.
My update will be to the phones after the Tegra 2 generation. And if my Galaxy S is stuck at 2.3.3 in Q4 2011 my next phone won't be a Samsung.

[Q] ICS4 Galaxy Note?????? Help

Good Afternoon,
Haven't posted here in a while, hope everyone's well.
I need some assistance, I am trying to Root my Galaxy Note,
and get it to run ICS. I read that samsung was to release
the ICS 4.0 for the Note, but haven't seen anything about it anymore.
My main reason is the face unlock. Really want this feature,
I bought an app that does it, but it's buggy.
So i figured i'd turn to the experts.
Here are my stats:
Unlocked, Bought in Germany (still in germany
Model GT-N7000
Android Version 2.3.6
Baseband N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-n7000xxla4-CL886827 [email protected] #2
Build: GINGERBREAD.XXLA4
Soooooo, what do you think?
Well, ICS is coming to Note. There has already been an early leak (by early I mean they are not yet suitable to most users because of bugs etc) and custom ICS ROMs are also coming out more and more.
Last thing I heard officially was that the official release will be here Q1, so that would mean this month. There has been some speculation that we will only see a Galaxy S II release on March and Note will be later, but, as far as I know, that is just speculation and not official.
So, just wait and see - it'll be released comparatively soon
added: sorry, I misread your post and didn't notice that you actually wanted to root your phone and install ICS now. If you do, keep in mind that the current ICS ROMs are still buggy.
If you want to, here is a nice guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1509703
If you want root first then follow This Thread
and Installing ICS Imilka AOSP ROM from This thread
you have posted this twidce now
Richy99,
My apologies, i posted under the wrong thread then changed it.
I didn't really want to root, but if it doesn't come soon enough i guess I will.
I got excited and thought cause i'm in germany maybe it was released, and i just freakin updated to Baseband LB1 which means i probably just shot myself in the foot and now will have to wait for the official release.
anywho i guess i'll keep doing research.
Thanks everyone!
(can i root LB1 Baseband )

[Q] Getting my Bad boy today...

Hey Guys and Gals,
Just bought a Note, will be arriving in the next couple of hours.
Just a couple of questions -
Im coming from a GSII that has been running a custom ICS rom and really really love the features ICS brings and how it looks. I would like to run ICS on my Note from the word go as I feel going back to GB would taint my experience.
(Q) Am I correct in assuming that if I flash a custom ICS rom on my Note that I wont be able to use the S Pen features???
If im correct with the first question, then I will not flash a ICS rom immediately as I want to experience the S Pen and all its features to see if its for me. But I will want to Root it.
(Q) If I root my device will I still be able to update to the official ICS (When released) via a Update Notification or will I have to flash in a differant way???
Thanks in advance, and I look forward to becoming a part of the XDA Galaxy Note Community....

you are quite right my friend, the GB on note for now is perfectly fine if wanna try out the new features.. even i recently upgraded from s2 running ics and to be honestly the first day i was missing ICS badly but gb on note is different than when i first got s2 year back.. i am just waiting for the premium suite from samsung with specific new features for note and havent really been keen to try the cooked ics roms since i am more than satisfied having the note for over 2 weeks.. but eventually its what you want to do with your device that is the freedom of android but do give the forums a read as upgrading to ics has given many new users problems.. otherwise just root your LC1 ++ 2.3.6 rom and fall in love with note all over again.. enjoy your new phone and dont forget to get screen protector and some sexy cases cheers
You wont be able to use the s-pen's features on an AOSP/AOPK build. The only safe ICS roms at the moment are the CM9 based ones so you won't get any of the Samsung specific functions of the s-pen if you flash those.
You could flash an ICS rom based on the leaked firmwares and then use the DAFUQ kernel which to my knowledge doesn't have the flaws that could mess up your eMMC chip but that kernel is in alpha or beta status so some (minor) problems are to be expected when using it.
My advice, stay on GB for the moment. If you want to root, look for the thread in the Developer's section with the pre-rooted kernels. Just flash one of those with PC Odin and you're rooted without the chance of triggering the triangle and binary counter so you still have warranty. If you choose the same pre-rooted kernel as the one you are running now you should be able to OTA/Kies update your phone to the official ICS firmware when it's released but you'll lose root obviously.
There are some very good custom firmwares and great alternative kernels for GB in the Dev section as well if you still wanna tweak your Note.

GB is Gingerbread, the current version of Android OS on the Note. ICS is Ice Cream Sandwich, the updated version that will be released by Samsung in the near future.
Most alternative launchers can be themed, look for themes for your launcher in the Play Store.

[Q] Is there an easy way to update Tab 2.3.3 or 4.0.3?

Please forgive me if this has been asked before but I honestly couldn't find what I was looking for. Lots of discouraging posts about bricked Tab's and this or that not working and complex procedures to update.
My Specs: ATT Galaxy Tab Model SGH-i987, Firmware 2.2, Kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1, Build NUMBER FROYO.UCJK1
I'm really not interested in rooting my Tab at this time however, I want to upgrade my ATT Galaxy Tab Model SGH-i987 firmware from the stock Froyo 2.2 because of some of the issues and limitations, to preferably Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 or at least Gingerbread 2.3.3 or higher. Unlike Apple with their iOS and easy firmware upgrades it seems that there is no easy way to do this with the Android Tab or am I missing something?
I am especially concerned about upgradability because I am jumping the Apple ship and plan on trading in my iPhone for the new Samsung Note 2 in the next couple weeks and a Note 10.1 is in my future for Christmas. No easy firmware updates would be a major drawback and my have me thinking twice.
Is there an easy way (as in hold my hand and walk me through it) to upgrading from 2.2 to ICS or at least GB 2.3.3 or higher? BTW. I also tried using Sammsung Kies but it said that 2.0 was not compatible with my device.
Thanks...

I have the ATT Tab, and I believe the highest FACTORY firmware you can goto is 2.3.6. Have you tried the Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update?
HOWEVER, I have loaded 4.1.2 (CM10) on the Galaxy Tab and it's pretty great. BUT, if you're not comfortable with mucking around with the software, I wouldn't. Keep in mind the Galaxy Tab is a few years old (released Oct. 2010), and normally software support stops after 1.5 years.
If you want to always have an "up-to-date" device without having to mess with bootloaders, rooting, etc, I'd look at Google's Nexus line of devices. Google has been good with keeping their Nexus line of hardware up-to-date without carrier intervention.

I do not have the option to do a software update through the tablet itself as you suggested.
I even installed a older version of Kies 1.5.3 hoping that my Tab was compatible with that version. Reading up on it, it appears that non of the United States Tabs are supported by Kies.
Thanks...

Really, the Overcome ROM is 2.3.6 and is quite stable. It includes a step-by-step guide (or as you say- hand-holding) to get 2.3.6 on your tablet. If you're unhappy with Gingerbread, you can easily update from there to CM10 or other custom ROMs. Sure, CM10 does have a few quirks but I find them worth the better experience and one that is similar to my Note2.
Again, the Overcome ROM is the "defacto" way to get your Tab back to "stock" and the instructions are very comprehensive with pictures and screenshots.
Here is the link.

Selling N7000, should I revert it to GB or keep 4.1.2 on it?

Every Android Phone that I have owned, before selling it, I revert it back to the stock firmware that it came with. GingerBread seems so outdated that I feel bad making anyone use it. Should I roll it back and sell it unrooted?
Why not ics latest official release? JB leak is not really the choice if your buyer is a casual user

If you know the buyer put the most stable rom on (I'm still on bangsti's LS7 release and i don't have the random reboots with data corruption ppl have with LSA (notably LSC) onwards).
If not who cares what rom is on the phone, not your problem, remember sold as seen lol

Official Samsung ICS. It works perfect, probably would not want to subject a buyer to any bugs, even 1 or 2, they may not be able to correct it themselves, may not be flashers like us.. Play it safe

I would put GB on it as the owner will most probably want to do a factory reset on it. If he/she bricks it in ICS then he or she will blame you.
Stock ICS with a Brick free kernel.
Few days I ago I flashed GB from my region on my note and decided to upgrade to ICS without flashing. But samsung servers refused to upgrade with phone and with keis. So, had to flash ICS. I think everyone who uses smart phones knows that Note have ICS. If they can not upgrade through Samsung they will blame you again. and ICS will putthem at risk of bricking the phone. SO ,,,,,,,
Here is my suggestion. As buyer knows that there is no warranty on phone, then I would tell them truth. and If they decide to have ICS (which samsung did upgrade from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4). Then flash it for them. And tell them the risk, or they can have the phone with same ROM you have installed on it.
