I'm debating rooting my phone now but keeping the stock rom.

Anything we tell you would be a guess...
I guess better questions would be:
Does anyone plan on doing anything special when the update comes out?
Do they expect things to work smoothly?
Do you plan to unroot, upgrade and re-root?

As far as I'm aware, rooting 2.1 on the Galaxy S is as simple as installing a few files which allow you to run things as root, no horrible kernel hacks or such necessary. This means that unrooting is just a matter of deleting those files.
So that, combined with the way that installing 2.2 would wipe the device anyway, means I'm really not worried about installing anything new on a rooted device. It's easy to unroot 2.1 if you want to, anyway.

-killed my root access

alternatively, cannot figure out how to revert back to froyo to root, then download and apply Cyanogenmod7, which is what i actually want
-When i was rooted on froyo 2.2, i would try to use ROM MANAGER and it kept saying the SD needed to be mounted, even though it was.
Basically, if someone could either copy-paste (or provide a link to) a guide as to how i can go from 2.3.5 Gingerbread to Cyanogenmod 7, i would be forever greatful.
I want to be able to overclock my cpu for better proformance, plus have FULL costomization abilities. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND I ROOTED MY CAP WHEN IT WAS 2.2 YESTERDAY, AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH ANY SORT OF MODDING.

Take a look in the development section.
You'll need to run one of the one-click stock ODIN or HEIMDALL packages with CWM baked in to get you a setup that will work for going to CM7 (there's one in my sig if you need it).
Once you do that, look for the CM7 thread in the Development section. It has a step-by-step guide to flashing CM7 (basically download, backup, flash).
well if you used super one click to root it back then, i would use super one click (new version) to root it again...
cm 7 has instructions.
if you really wanna know how to root 2.3.5...it's in the general section.

I used heimdall to go back to froyo
Then instead of cm7 i flashed cognition through clockworkmod rom manager
now im running on cognition 4.5.3
however, all overclocking apps i try wont go beyond 1000mhz.
im trying to get it to at least 1200.
Any ideas? Fixes?

You'll want to take a look at the kernels compatible with Cog, I'm not familiar with Cog, so I can't give you any direction as to which one you could try
Froyo isn't as freaking kernel picky as gingerbread. Any froyo kernel will work, just remember if you use a reoriented I9000 kernel you will need to flash an I9000 modem as well. This will also give you hsupa at the cost of audience chip support.

upgrade again to uckj3 firmware with bootloader then flash boog kj3 kernel it have cwm recovery
after flashing recovery
wipe data and cache
install cm7 from recovery it will fail for the first time again go to recovery and install cm7 after installing cm7 wipe data and cache again reboot the phone it will take time as the phone will regenerate dalvik cache
cm7 is pre overclocked to 1300 mhz you can increase the overclock to 1700 mhz by flashing glitch kernel

It isn't pre overclocked, it comes at a stock 1000 MHz or 1GHz.... Then you can OC with Glitch and stock I believe. But it isn't 'pre overclocked'

If you need to set it, it's not PRE overclocked. The stock kernel just comes with the ability TO overclock

I am really struggling as to whether it's worth upgrading to stock GB.
I mean the "newer and better" is sitting there beckoning me with its siren song, but there appear to be lots of little landmines that people are then regretting the upgrade.
1) tethering mgr error
2) bad battery life
3) random shutdowns/reboots
etc, etc
Are the "benefits" really noticeable such that it is worth taking the risk of the landmines and the time/hassle of trying to fix them?
I was able to root my captivate, my specs are: 2.3.5- 1897UCKK4- kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489 Gingerbread. Downloaded ROM manager and it doesn't list captivate when I try to flash clockworkmod, why? Also have OCLF and when I try to lagfix it says I don't have playlogos file. Can some help me out here. I am fairly new to this, but I think it has something to do with EXT2 not being EXT4?
Don't use ROM manager. You need to flash a kernel that has CWM baked in. You can find one in the dev section. Also, I'm pretty sure lagfix is not really used anymore

Quadrant means nothing... Those scores are able to be manipulated by a single line of code.

gj23, Thanks for listing the fw versions of your phone, I'm interested in how you were able to root your stock 2.3.5 Captivate. I have tried three the following root methods and all have failed.
1) Super1Click, freezes during su from file system errors in logs.
2) update.zip to sdcard, fails with file signature not recognized.
3) rageagainstthecage.zip, fails to reconnect to PC after adb disconnects; or terminal emulator freezes up.
So I'm wondering if AT&T didn't make this build harder to root.
Is there a rooted mod compatible with this phone build?
If so, Can I use a rooted mod and flash it without being rooted first to get root permission?
I have searched and read so hopefully I'm not wasting anyones time. These are my phone specs.

Odin flash mtcarey's Corn Kernel version 7.0a and reboot into Recovery. There is an option to Root.

apply a lagfix
debloat.
but i always get a random reboot effect.
i took a look into the Fasty Rom but the DL links are dead.
since this was the only rom that seemed to appeal to me right now.
I wouldnt Mind a Deodexed rom. but i want to keep it as much of a stock as possible.
I am still learning the captivate ways since this was given to me and i use it as a tablet.
the stuff i use.
I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.tar
CornKernel_UCKK4_v706.tar (v705 also causes reboots)
my potential problems are
init.d
CWM (kernel)
and debloating (have gotten cases where the reboots dont start till after i debloat.)

As you probably noticed, Corn is probably your best answer for what you wanna run.
If you're looking into something with better performance, I'd suggest a JB ROM. That being said, this device will only go so far which the hardware it has.
Any recommendations?

if this is true about the performance, how noticeable would it be?
and what Jellybean Rom Would you suggest that could give me a balance of performance and battery life?
which is something im going for right now.
so far the specs i have are running great but if there really is a way to boost my performance by more then 30% it would be a welcoming sight.

You won't get much more than what you're getting atm cause like I said, the hardware can only go so far.
As for ROM, we don't make suggestion (to avoid flaming). If you really wanna take on a JB ROM, look them up and choose the one that suits your style the best.

oh, i see.
its hard to find all of them since theres so many threads with ROMs.
ill try and take a look. but it seems like it would be just more time spent on it then it would actually be beneficial.

Im getting mighty confused about this flashing thing.
Im looking to change my ROM to something else then the ICS from Samsung.
Here is the deal.
I read the warning posts and it say (what i think it means) that my build "XLP9" ICS 4.0.3 from Samsung is not safe to do anything on.
I look around on the net to see if there is a way (despite what i read here).
It looks promising.
But all the things i find is ether a lower version of Android (like 2.3.x) or someone is telling me about tons of stuff to download and do before.
So this is were i ask you all.
Do (been searching for 2 days, perhaps my search terms are bad) anyone know if there is a working way to for me to change my version to AOKP for e.g without destroying my phone?
Like i said before, my Build is: XLP9, android version 4.0.3 (from Samsungs update service).
Phone is rooted using CWM.
Its a Note version for the .EU market bought like a few weeks ago (came with 2.3.x i believe).
If you know a thread that contains step by step instructions that will allow me to change the rom, please post it to me here.

But since i did the upgrade to ICS is the old rom still on the phone?
I mean to reset it back (same as thode recovery discs on a computer).
Any help or points in the right direction is helpfull at this time.

It have too many method to change from stock rom to custom rom or aokp. My suggestion is choose your favourite rom and read carefully with the installation method provided at op, then you be fine.

Now that you have upgraded to ICS. Those are the factory settings.
Easiest way to downgrade to GB Is by flashing a stock GB rom via pc Odin.
Most of the new ICS custom ROMs now just require you to install AbyssKernel 4.2, then select advanced options and select reboot recovery. Then you wipe your device (wipe data, cache and dalvik cache). From this moment you're free to flash. It all takes less then a minute if you hurry (joking, don't rush when flashing your phone), and it's not very complicated. Do it once and you'll know it's simple.
You need to have a root access first. Plenty of guides how to do it out there.
Hey guys, the thing is I tracked down a Note 1 running 4.0.4 unroot, but is running terribly at this point. I think it is due to so many apps install and present on the homescreen. It is available for 'bout $200 (all my budget, in South East Asian it's pretty big, so bear with me). If I get it, I'd definitely flash it to 4.1 or newer, as I can't bear the lag on 4.0 now.
So, any advice on whether I should get it? Is the thing flashable? I mean, I have an Galaxy tab 10.1 so I'm kinda familiar to flashing, but as the newcomer, I'd like to ask is there any difficulty flashing this thing, anything I should be aware of before bricking it?

If you follow the ''HOW TOO's'' then you should not get any brick or issues. I flashed so many Rom- and Kernel's and i never got a brick.

The previous owner is a 10th grader I tutored, I doubt he knows anything 'bout root or flashing so I think that's not the trouble here. One thing on my mind is that in my country there's still no JB 4.1 OTA yet, at least not until some weeks ago. So, after some basic reading, I got something planned out:
_ Never factory reset while on stock ICS => I should push stock JB through Odin =>safe kernel => push CWM through Odin =>root =>flash some CM goodness
Hell, if stock JB is smooth, I might even stop at rooting.
Basically, that's the right order of this, right?
Somebody better stop me before I mess up something. Haha :laugh:

I'd say don't take your chances by going the short way. To be sure you could flash a safe kernel through Odin and then use it's CWM to wipe and flash your stuff. That's what I've done when I got my note and never even got close to the brick bug.
If you really don't understand bullocks of android, just follow carefully the instructions on Dr. Ketans guide thread and you should be fine

By "bricking", you meant soft brick or boot loop, didn't you? Couldn't imagine a device bricked twice in its life.
Well, let's just presume I'm on stock ICS unroot with unsafe kernel. First I can flash Philz's kernel and CWM (all in one zip file) in stock recovery. That means with that I'm rooted + safe kernel +CWM, then free to factory reset, wipe or flash anything, right?

Oh, and I'm from Vietnam, but I don't understand what my location has anything to do with this, as most Android devices in Vietnam use US firmware.

Yup. That's a safe procedure. It's important you don't wipe anything while you are at your stock kernel. Only after you flashed the safe kernel AND REBOOTED TO THE NEW RECOVERY
