[Q]LPY+CWM without TW with full AOSP ICS apps? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well for instance i flashed my Note with the last LPY and CWM, but after using CM9, Stunner, Imilka's rom, touchwiz is really boring me...
I'd like to find a way to put the official look and feel of the original AOSP apps that can be found in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus...
Okay some of you are telling me use XX Rom or YY Rom, but in fact i appreciate the LPY stability, Note S apps, and today none of the available roms is offering the full AOSP look and feel with the LPY kernel...
CM9 even in nightly is for the moment not really stable...Too bad because trebuchet is really good...
Of course i don't like to use other launchers (go launcher etc etc)to put skins because these are using resources...
The best rom for instance is Imilka's one which is not doing too much (not too much of useless things), and is really near perfection of AOSP.
When an LPY kernel with full AOSP?
Thanks mates!

Official ICS ROM(s) ok, or better stick with GB ROM(s)?

Hi, fellow Noters!
I have the N7000 Note, with stock GB ROM installed and only rooted, flashed with abyss kernel.
I am in the UK, so I am considering updating/upgrading to ICS... Now, from most of the posts here I gather that most of custom ICS ROMs aren't yet the most stable and people who installed the official ICS have mixed reactions...
Don't get me wrong- I am completely satisfied with my Note and the functionality of the apps as it is, but was just wondering how much improvement would I see, if I installed ICS...
Also, if I want to install official ICS ROM, do I need to unroot first and then flash it with ICS, or just straight on?
Thanks and enjoy the weekend!
Ics is suffing from the brickbug for now, that is not to mention other issues such as baterry drain. So if you are still satiafied with gb then should hold on unrik tge brixk bug is cleared. Cheers.

If you want to do an update ics stock , you have to flash with odin 1.85 the rom that you prefere..... it is not necessary performing unroot...
I'm still running GB as it's running great. Nothing really worth upgrading to ICS.

Stay with GB. If you desperately wants ICS then flash CM9 or PA.
If you want to stay on a Touchwiz rom, then it may be better to stick with Gingerbread as it has less bugs that the TW ICS counterparts. However I would thoroughly recommend AOKP or CyanogenMod 9 if you truly want ICS; it has almost all features fully working (including camera, tethering and full access to all storage) and are both extremely light and quick. Plus both support themeing and have a wealth of customization options.
As for the brick bug, that has been almost eradicated IF you use a safe kernel such as Speed mod 3.3. Of course the worry is non existent on AOSP roms.

Right... Thanks guys for your input!
I am in no rush to get to ICS, as pretty much all the visual stuff can be achieved through some extra launchers and themes while still staying with stock GB ROM.
I am pretty much happy with TouchWizz, but find the Go launcher a bit more faster and easier to use. I go to TW only when I need S Memo and that stuff from the suite...
so, until the bug in the official ICS ROM is fixed, or a very stable custom ICS ROM made, I will stick with GB...

so you say that flashing Cyanogmod9 rom and Speedmod 33 is a good bet?
can you give instructions on just how to do just that.I've never flashed anything before, but I do have lies and Odin on my PC already and both can see my note.

He, he, he... you mean Kies?
I also sometimes mistype words and it is annoying when the result is actually a proper word, so it completely can confuse the recipient of the SMS, for instance...
I wonder if there are alternatives to the current ordering of letters on keyboards, you know-instead of ASDF-JKLsomething...
yeah.. typing on the note.
using GB keyboard with autospell ..
messes me up alot, cause I rarely proofread.
I Still would like to install the safe Cynamiod 9 and speed mod 33 if someone could walk me thru it.
thanks

[Q] What is your favorite rom?

Hello guys,
so far I've been using Rocket Rom (v8 i think) - Gingerbread, Paranoid Android 0.5 ICS, Criskelo's and finally Chrack's Rom on my Note.
I'm still using Chrack's v12 so its time to upgrade.
I wanna keep the S-Note stuff for now, so I want to choose a TW based rom, but I just can't decide which. The differences (at least if you compare the feature lists) of most roms are very narrow.
I'm undecided between Kingdroid V8, Rocket Rom v11 and Chrack's Final (v18).
What do you guys use and what you like or dislike about your roms?
AND while we are already at it: Is there any ICS rom out there which has the statusbar acting as Brightness toggle like it used to be in Gingerbread? I used that feature all the time, but on ICS roms it doesnt seem to exist, or am I wrong?
Question #2: What are the "downsides" of CM10? No MHL and no snote apps right? Anything else?
--
Not trying to get people to praise one rom and bash the others or smth, just looking for some opinions and pro's n contras of all the roms since I don't have the time to test them all out myself. (I mean fully testing, not just flashing and having a quick look)
Thanks

Hi there, only a personal opinion but I have tried all / most of the ROMS on the Galaxy Note ROM DB and find Chrack to be the best for my personal usage (Music, Browser, Flash video, email, text, A2DP). I have replaced the Snote etc with Papyrus and GNote (I think they are smoother and much less bloated).
The CM10 / AOKP ROMs take up far less memory but A2DP issues, no flash video and problematic SMS make it a no go for me.
Only my opinion though.
Hope this helps. Please hit Thanks if it did.

I'm trying the BlackCNA 2.1 and it's quite interesting, but looks like it also has this damn memory leak problem...

[Q] Most reliable, yet visually fun TW based custom ROM (preferably JB, or ICS)?

First off-hold your guns!
I know JB as such isn't out yet, and can't be expected to be as stable as ICS... But, still- after watching video reviews of some custom ROMs, one asks themselves, if they should give it a go...
Ok, so I am running stock (LAME!!!, I know ) GB, rooted and couple of launchers make it more interesting, sure... However, after browsing through this lovely and extremely helpful forum, I noticed that there are people who are already enjoying the benefits of running JB ROMs, or very good and matured TW based ICS custom ROMs...
1. So, I know ICS stock kernel has been a bit of a problem, what that just 4.03, or did 4.04 fix that?
2.Kill be for being so easily pleased, but I do find my Note and its current ROM already pretty smooth... I know all the bits that ICS makes it better and even more so JB, but considering all the things ICS brought, is there a point of trying JB, except for experimenting?
3. One thing I am so after, is that bit where from the lock screen you have like 3, or 4 options, one of them being going straight into the camera mode. I don't know if that is only JB, but I could really use it, as the old way (press the menu button, swipe to unlock, then press the camera icon) so many times made me miss the scene I wanted to take a photo of. So, any info on that would be much appreciated.
4.So much hype around GN II, but seeing that so many features are being ported to GN I custom ROMs, I am only after a ROM which will have those new and useful S III and GN II bits sawn onto the old(er) jacket.
5. I am in no rush, so do you think that in 3-4 weeks something more stable JB based will be available(official JB update should be rolling out soon, no)?
Big thanks to all you guys here, not just for answering the questions, but also all the tutorials and topics we noobs can find here... Keep up the good work.
See custom jb roms are stable like cm10 aosp liquidsmooth etc.you will feel smooth quality on it and butter project.
Ics 4.0.4 is very stable and has many mods and a good battery life too.
So lastly its your choice which one to flash.
Hit thanks button pleass

Answering the title of your thread, there are no TW-based JB roms yet. All the TW-based ROMs are ICS. So if you are looking for smooth and reliable TW-based ROMs I would go for Kingdroid (ICS). If you want Jelly Bean you have ParanoidAndroid, Liquidsmooth, but these are not TW-based.
And answering the 5 questions in the contents of your post:
1. The problem is not with the kernel, the problem is with the chip itself, the *workaround* is using a modified kernel that does not use the MMC_CAP_ERASE command, so to answer your question, no the problem isn't solved and it won't be solved unless Samsung recalls all the units and gives out new ones without the bug. You will have to be careful when upgrading to ICS/JB because you will need to use safe kernels.
2. Jelly bean is definitely smoother than ICS, it is worth upgrading IMO.
3. That is the ICS/JB unlock screen that comes in stock android, and it is also available in most AOSP/AOKP ROMs. It is not available by default in Touchwiz but you can download that lockscreen from the Play Store as a standalone app and replace it.
4. Not all the Note2 features have been ported to the Note1, for instance the multi-window view is not available on any ROM yet as far as I know.
5. I have made the switch because I can't stand the look of Touchwiz, the complete disregard of Google's Holo design is for me a reason enough to switch to AOSP/AOKP, that said even when official JB ROMs start rolling out I probably won't come back to Touchwiz.
I think that you need a stock ICS TW rom, maybe RocketRom or Alliance v2.1 rom. I have tried a couple JB roms, but it feels like you have giant nexus insted of a great note.
If you want stock, pick up a last 4.0.4 xxlrt or ddlr9 or something similar, depends where you live but it's not too important. After that, just flash PhilZ kernel and you are safe, disable all aplications that you dont need, and thats it.
Or if you want a custom rom which is great like stock and cool like custom, choose rocketrom v12 or alliance v2.1
Hope that helps!
Ooooohhh-dann so...
Well, that clears so many things...
I mean, am no Samsung fan boy. It is just that I edit many pdf docs on the go, and other TW apps are very useful as they bring the functionality and the precision of the S Pen... As I said. I even find stock GB smooth, so I believe ICS should feel like heaven for me.
BIG QUESTION = so, since the problem was the chip, not the stock kernel itself, and the only solution is a modification of kernel, surely Google will include the workaround in a new JB update, no?
I haven't updated OTA to ICS, because I was scared of bricking the phone, or something.... Are the updates incremental, or so I need to update to official ICS and then to JB, or will I be able to go straight to JB (official one)?
I think I might go for Kingdroid (ICS), or Sweet ROM... Though, I from reading their respective threads, I get the idea that less people have issues with Sweet ROM....
Thanks again...
Ota update from GB ROM is safe because GB kernel is safe. Or can download stock ICS from Dr Ketan and flash with pc odin. Then flash appropriate Philz kernel (can do it from stock recovery). You will then be on safe stock kernel (only brick bug is disabled) with advanced CWM recovery. Once on Phils u can backups/restores and flash any ROM u like. Just have to do full wipe before flashing new ROMs.

[Q] TW based custom rom + remove samsung "bloatware"

Hello, lovely folks!
I am about to flash one of your great custom ROMs (the stable ICS ones, can't wait for JB), so I have a few last questions...
I will go either for a TW based ROM that also has all the things you normally get from Samsung that I don't find useful (social hub, music, and other apps whose third party versions/alternatives I find more stylish, better looking and more functional), but will compromise and risk having these unwanted extras hogging my memory.
Or, I would go (if possible!) for a TW based custom ROM (ICS) that has all the functionality, but either comes as almost stock, barebone Android with added S3, and SGN2 cool apps and selected features, BUT WITHOUT the Samsung unwanted apps, or comes with these too, but has the option of removing them, without risking the operability of the system/phone.
Now, I have narrowed my sight onto Sweet ROM, RocketROM, or maybe Kingdroid, or has that one been superseeded by the first two I mentioned.
Just a thought; why not make some sort of meter of popularity and rating of usability/stability of all ROMs for Note, within tw based, stock, and newest, round the corner, which is now JB? It would save you guys having to answer all the same questions all the time.
Thanks a lot!
My personal recommendation to you would be to flash Sweet Rom. It's the latest ics release available and much as the name implies, it's a very SWEET ROM! :good:

As far as bloatware is concerned, I usually download the rom, extract it using winrar, remove any unwanted or unnecessary apk's, zip it back up using winrar and then flash it to my device.
How do you do that? Can you do that without risking the stabilty of the phone. I mean when I even try and stop/close some samsung apps I get the message that it may cause problems.
Ok, so lets say I want to install Sweet ROM. So, I download it and unzip it, and then what? Is it just the matter of removing apk's? where do I find them? any tutorial on this kind of thing?
thanks again.
Sweet rom v5 has a lot of bloatware removed which you can add back if you want to in an extra zip file. Check out the sweet rom thread.

[Q] Differences between the stock 4.1.2 and the custom KitKats

Are there any noticeable improvements (performance-wise) in the custom KitKat ROMs and the stock 4.1.2? I mean, are there any changes that you can feel and see, or is it just a new android version with fancy new features?
Also I'd wait until a stable version of OmniROM or CM gets built until I try to flash my device.

I have flashed CM nightlies, PA nightlies, 4.3 PAC and Omni ROM.. Each Rom has its own unique features and performance difference!..
But personally i would say, those has its own + and - things..
The last ROM i flashed 4.4.2 Dirt Unicorns Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2633846 ) seemed Great to me.. Overall Nice features cheery picked from all ROMS but again its individual's preference in the end of the day and Every ROM is unique in its own way!
NOTE:- S-Note, S planner and other samsung apps will work only if you are flashing a Touchwiz based Rom.. Those apps wont work in CM, PA and AOKP Roms cuz they need TW framework to work with!
If you are thinking of flashing of TW based Roms, i would recommend 2 Roms to take a look at..
X-Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320871 ) This is the Rom, i am currently using.. It will give your phone a tablet UI, thus taking advantage of your Note's large real estate screen! .. Multi window, floating window and buttery smooth and lots of features!
You can also check out the Note 8 Apps ported to our galaxy note N7000, if you are interested.. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217662 )
Arya Mod ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52357155 ) This is also a great Rom and cool icons and themes!
I can't say I've been using any of the TouchWiz features, to be honest.
Just a few things I don't like on the stock ROM: The gallery takes a long time to open, opening the contacts takes a bit, and the animations sometimes glitch out (they just get skipped). And I'm locked to my current provider, but as my guarantee is at an end, I'm looking for a custom ROM to get out of the damn simlock, and maybe fix some other things as well.
So if you could just point out a few major differences (both performance wise, and feature wise) between CM, Omni and Dirt Unicorns, that'd be awesome. Of course I'd still wait for a stable version to come out.
I'm not really sure if I want a TW based ROM, not that I was using any of it's features. They always were a tad bit laggy on my phone. Mainly I'm looking for a ROM that'll run the smoothest, and that's the main thing, all eye-candy and fancy stuff is just icing on the cake. But I'll check out the ROMs you linked (the links seem to be wrong, tho). Thanks a lot!
I'll post another question in the same thread, so I don't have to open another one and clutter the board.
Are the OmniROM and CM nightlies stable? Also, is the only way to update CM to download and flash a new version of the OS, since there's that opendelta thing on Omni, where you can just download the update, just like real OTA?

They aren't stable but can be used as daily driver depending upon your usage. For Omnirom there is open delta, you can check for updates in settings>About Phone and it would only download the update not the whole rom.

I doubt 4.4 will ever be 100% stable, but god bless the cooks that keep coming up with updates, since for obvious reasons,
Samsung won't port past 4.1.2 officially.
Personally, for my usage, I've skipped everything past 4.1.2, as I can go weeks between reboots, lock ups, and with a custom
launcher (go launcher), my device is smooth and rock stable. It has a stock (DBT german international device) rom, rooted,
custom kernal just in case I forgot and didn't want to erase and endure the brick bug. Uninstalled the DBT bloat.
2+ years and still going strong.
