how to root with stock ICS

I know there are stickies but I am still unsure of where to start.
My phone is stock ICS + Sense 3.6
I want to root it so I can install root only apps. Further down the road I want to install CM9 or another rom.
I rooted my Desire with unrewoked last year, which was really easy, but for the Incredible I can't figure out where to start.
I am not sure if the stickies apply to ICS as well?
Help please

You are in uncharted waters my friend. ICS/Sense 3.6 introduced a new HBOOT 2.02.0002. Your only hope is that the Downgrade script that uses 'tacoroot' exploit stills works. Here is the link if you want to give it a shot and then report back on your success or failure.

The way I rooted mine was firstly unlock the bootloader via HTCdev, then flashed 4ext recovery via fastboot. I was then able to flash Superuser via recovery and finally installed Busybox from the market

Thanks for this post. I forgot that this was an option because so many people dismiss this option because they don't want HTC knowing that they unlocked their phone.

So at this point does your phone boot normally after the RUU?
If so, since you are S-OFF you can flash a custom Recovery in FASTBOOT USB mode and then the choice is up to you. You can install su-3.1.3.zip to root your current ROM or you can install a custom, rooted ROM.

In that case, my advice is that you need to do further reading and research about modding your phone and the tools that you will need to use in order to successfully mod your phone.
A good place to start is by reading the Sticky Posts in the General Section and the Development Section of this forum.

Unlocking the bootloader does not give you root/superuser access. You need to install a custom recovery image and then you can flash SuperSu to get root/superuser access or you can install a custom, rooted ROM.

All of the information you need has already been posted on this forum. You need to learn to search, read and understand all things with regard to modifying your phone.
You need to begin by reading the "STICKY" posts in the forum, that is why they are there, so they are easy to find and read.

Go to the general section and follow lynt's guide.... As you have an unlocked bootloader.... Skip those steps.... It's very clear...
Download and Flash a clockworkmod recovery in the bootloader... To download Google it...
Then download a rom and flash it via recovery...
Give a read and try... If you are not confident enough still you have a video on YouTube following lynt's guide...

I have never seen a CM ROM requiring S-OFF. They say S-OFF but the only true S-OFF ROMs ive seen are ARHD, The Second Sun, and MAYBE the stock one made by tpbklake.

Yes. The is the reason that having S-OFF is a big deal. When you are S-OFF, you simply need to flash a new ROM in CWM/4EXT and then you are ready to go.

[Q] Thinking about getting one but have just 1 question

As subject line states, I'm thinking about getting an htc one but I have a concern. I swore off htc devices b/c they can be such a ***** to open up for custom roms. For example, when I had the htc evo 4g (2012 flagship) I had to root, then install custom recovery, then obtain s-off. I'm just wondering if this device is the same. Is all u need root, then custom recovery? Or, do u need s-off too? If so, is it easy to do? If anyone could link me to a tutorial I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks!
you have to unlock your bootloader first then you can install a custom recovery and root. you dont need to S-off to get the basics

What do u mean by basics? Can I flash ANY custom rom, radios, kernels, etc? Thanks for your help.
yes most roms and kernels are flash-able with a custom recovery like TWRP - S-off i think is only for modifying things like the bootloader. i just unlocked and installed TWRP and am running CM-10.2 nightlies just fine.
radios are here

Don't know what your skillset is but PLEASE don't flash any ROM, radio or kernel that is not specifically built for the Sprint HTC ONE (M7SPR or M7WLS). Other than that, you should be good to go with a root and recovery.
