To all the sifus,
Just before I've decided to try ICS Stunner v5, we're informed about the risk of having our beloved phone bricked...
My phone is currently rooted with CheckROM HD v6, Franco kernel #10 and I've done NANDROID backup just in case.
Will it be safe to upgrade to ICS Stunner v5 without causing any problem like the public announcement where damage could be done to eMMC?
And can we simply downgrade back to what I've had before if I just restore from NANDROID backup via CWM?
Thanks & Regards,

No, it won't.
You always take a chance and it can not be guaranteed "safe" 100%.

Sorry for the confusion...does that mean it won't damage eMMC and it's safe to proceed?

No, it means the exact opposite. It may damage your partitions and it's not safe to proceed.
Thanks for the information, guess I will have to sit tight on GB at this moment and drooling on those who had custom ICS ROMs... :/
There are 3 safe custom ICS Roms ATM: CM9, Asylum and MIUI.
You could try one of them if you like.

Hello lovely XDA users. Just wanted to ask a few questions about the Note. Im used to Nexus devices and the unlocking and rooting process is usually straight forward, reading up on the Note I got a bit confused lol. So how do you root it? I have read about the ICS leaks bricking phones so I will stick to GB for now, can anyone recommend a good GB ROM? Would like stock Android if possible. One more question, apart from rooting how do you get CWM Recovery on it? Thanks for your help people and I'm really looking forward to getting the Note.
There's a thread in the dev section with pre-rooted firmwares. You can flash any of these with PC Odin and you're rooted. I suggest you flash the European Open or UK version of XXLC1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
If you want to get CWM Recovery as well you need to flash the CF-Kernel for the version of the rom you flashed. So if you flashed XXLC1 you need the CF-Kernel for version LC1.
Scroll to the bottom of this post and download the file for the correct version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18978158&postcount=1
Extract that file, double click the alread-rooted.bat file and it will push all the necessary files to the Note. Once it's done your phone will reboot and you can use CWM Recovery (hold power+home+volume up untill Samsung logo pops up) to flash any rom you like.

Explained like a pro, Thank you very much. Any GB ROM you would recommend? Preferably with Stock Android although I'm guessing you can't use the S Pen apps? Might stick to Stock Touchwiz ROM although I hate it. Any kernel to recommend with a Stock ROM? Thanks for your help.
All the custom GB roms fully support the s-pen because they're all based on official Samsung firmwares, I'm not aware of any custom rom with stock Android UI at the moment. You can always use a custom launcher to at least get rid of TouchWiz. I'm using CheckRomHD V6 and installed NemusLauncher at the moment and I like it a lot. RocketRom V23 is a very nice rom as well though it's a bit of a hassle to flash as you first need to flash V22, do a wipe and then flash V23.
You can even combine custom roms and custom kernels. If you want to be able to overclock as well you can flash for example CheckRom and then flash the AbyssNote 4.2 or FM Kernel 2.0 in CWM Recovery. Or if you go for speed and good battery life you can flash SpeedMod Kernel 2-11.
Basically it's all up to you. Read the threads about the custom roms, choose a few with features you like and just try them for a while. Just keep in mind that there is a slight chance you end up in a boot loop (usually solved by doing a data/cache/Dalvik wipe in recovery) or soft-bricking and you have to start all over by flashing a pre-rooted kernel and CF-Root again, but this applies to any custom rom on any phone.
You said them firmwares are pre-rooted but on the thread it say's they are not directly rootable. ???

So much positivity on this thread... Awesome. Btw I recommend official cm9..It's safe and won't brick your device.. And is amazing. Slap reloaded cm9 on top and you're golden.

Where is this ROM? Sounds good. Any Kernel you recommend with it or just the standard one that's with it? Can you OC with normal kernel?

Does this mean that you want all the stuff that comes initially with your Note?
If yes, then CM9 probably is not the right thing for you. It is devoid of all the
Samsung crapware, plus you don't get native S-Pen Samsung support. This
means no SMemo and similar stuff; you have to use different apps from the
Market instead.
OTOH, if you want a lean, smooth and fast Rom, and are not afraid to do some
tinkering, then CM9 would be ideal for you.

1. CM9 is here.
2. No optional kernels for now, because it contains the only safe ICS kernel ATM
3. No OC either, but you won't be needing it - the kernel is very fast as it is. In
fact, I keep mine at 1.2Ghz. It feels just as quick, and it's somewhat easier on
the battery.
Ok, I flashed a stock GB ROM through odin and I have run the bat file and installed the CF kernel and CWM. How do I flash CM9 and where do I find Reloaded CM9? Thanks you lovely people

so i have galaxy note and i have ota, but i havnt instaled it yet, so reading post about kernels and otheres stuff , hardbrick! so question is easy does it safe to update it on ics or not?? i cant understand , one group say its safe other say its not! so what the hell??!!! its just so confusing
OTA is one of the safest (if not the safest) method of flashing.
Updated mine yesterday.....
After ICS update by OTA i have done factory reset/data wipe and catch wipe twice. Once by setting menu with erase everything option and second by recovery option (vol up+home+power)...
Every thing is fine. My note running better than GB now.
Do a factory reset/data wipe in GB than update by OTA.
It's safe...

We might never know if/when they release a safe rom since samsung never gives any change log.
So what do we do ? Wait for ever ? Take the plunge ? Pray ?
I think it's down to that: either you can have it repaired under warrenty and then you just do it, or you got the phone on the grey market and you're stuck on GB for ever.
Then there is a third choice for everybody: flash CM9 from GB.
Stock Android 4.0.4 on your note without risk: how about that ?

Your apps and everthing will be as is. This is nonwipe ics stock rom. Be carefull if you decide to root it, there is a bug that will superbrick your phone if you fatory reset or recovery data wipe.
widgets will not stay as were. All other things (apps, contacts,...) will stay in phone

That advice applies whether you are rooted or not!
In fact, the only known 100% safe way to wipe the device one you are on a Samsung ICS build is to use a custom GB kernel, and you'd need to be rooted to flash that.

Dave

It is believed to apply to all Samsung ICS kernels for the Note.
Some kernels built from Samsung sources (e.g. Speedmod, Franco etc) apparently do not call the routine that causes the brick problem, but there is some anecdotal evidence of bricks on these too (could be unrelated of course).

Dave
Hi guys, i'm on Cyanogenmod 4.2.2 on my N7000, and I ask me a question,
Can I format EMMC on the recovery ?
Because my Galaxy Note reboot, has a lot of bug etc.
So, i have format Data, preload, cache system etc, but not EMMC.
Can I format it without brick my Note ?
short answer: yes
reason: because you can and super brick bug was only on ics 4.0.4

And that makes it safe?
It is probable that you may brick on ICS, not 100% guaranteed that it will brick when you wipe. The same may be said for JB too.

i think we are worrying the OP with this kind of talk he wanted to know about cm4.2.2 and we are talking about 4.0.4 and 4.1.2 i know their sources are from 4.1.2 but they are experts with this so i don't think the risk is there so to the OP put ur trust in CM team and me and this guy are not responcible for anything that happens to ur phablet
True. Op is on a cm10.1 kernel which is completely safe for wipes.
Hello there XDA.
First I would like to apologize if this has already been answered. I searched for the past 3 hours but did not find anything that would fully answer my questions.
So I have a Samsung GT-N7000 Galaxy Note running the stock 4.1.2 LT4 ROM (rooted). The device is unbranded and bought from Germany. Because it lags horribly everywhere, I want to get ICS and the old TouchWiz back, so I decided to downgrade to the latest ICS ROM that has TouchWiz 4, and, after searching, I found that it is N7000XXLRK.
These are my questions:
- what do I have to do to fully wipe the phone before I downgrade to N7000XXLRK, therefore completely removing any traces of older ROMs, in order to do a clean install? Do I have to use some option in PC Odin? Maybe wipe some partitions in Recovery (I have installed PhilZ CWM for LT4)? Cache, data, system, or maybe some others, too?
- what partitions are safe to wipe from CWM and what are not?
- what else should I do to ensure that the new ROM works properly?
- is there anything that needs to be backup-ed, aside from apps (I use TitaniumBackup for that) and all files on the sdcard and external_sd partitions?
I mention that before LT4 I had all Stock 2.3 ROMs, all Stock ICS ROMs 2 AllianceROMs and 3 leaked Jelly Bean ROMs.
Thanks in advance.
See friend... this is Easy, I think as you are on xxlt4 u must be running philz, c.o.h or speedmod//??.. if yes, boot to recovery and go to mount and storage option and then format everything... after that.. go to the bootloader, VOLdown+home+Power.. and then directly flash your ICS ROM, this would be a perfect clean install!!!
hit- THanks please

Hello NoteboyTech.
All right. Thanks for the answer. I will try it. Yes, I am on official XXLT4 with PhilZ CWM, but no custom kernel.
P.S. Have you or anybody else tested this before? I may be a little paranoid but I am afraid not to brick my device, as I have read that some users were unable to use the phone function after formatting /efs or /boot in CWM.
