You don't need CM7, but it is preferred.
I flashed to I9000XXJVP, then with CWM, and then install ICS from there.
Here's a good tutorial. It depends on your model, I think. Maybe someone knowledgeable can help.

I am on stock ICS 4.0.4 latest. Is there any issue in doing a Nandroid backup or restore in stock ICS 4.0.4?

Yes, you can't even do a nandroid/backup in stock ICS 4.0.4
It requires root and a custom CWM.
you can, just root ur device and flash cwm, then u can do a nandroid backup

As long your on safe custom kernel like notecore then there is no issue.

Do it in custom kernel...
Never using stock kernel to do nandroid back up n restore.

To be on a much safer side use titanium backup. You can always rely on it.
How would one reliably tell if one has a "safe" kernel?
Perhaps one has flashed a certain ROM, how does one tell if it updated the kernel, and if so, how does one know if that is now a "safe" kernel?

You must flash the safe kernel like speedmod, goku, and notecore to know you are safe. The rom has kernel inside.
If you go "system settings" of your phone and go to "about phone" you will see the kernel. If notecore then you can read notecore, this is an indication you are in safe kernel.
if on stock ICS then its unsafe kernel.
You can from the first post of kernel thread if emmccaperase has been removed if it is relatively safe. You will also find despite first post people asking if it safe in thread.
So ultimate answer: by reading
speedmod, notecore, abyss, cm9, AOKP are considered safe. But always check first post and thread

Hi Everyone!
I'm kinda having problems going back to stock ics from stable cm9.
I wanted to get back to stock just so I can try speedmod k3-13.
Whenever I flash stock ics through pc odin, I get stocked in the blinking Samsung logo, and my note never boots up. I am now back to cm9 and everything is ok.
Any thoughts on what steps I should undertake to get it working!?
Thanks in advance!

Why you are using kernel to get back to gb???no need to do.if you are doing this for going back to custom gb rom then i would suggest you to first flash a pre-rooted gb rom from dr.ketan's guide.try to flash it through pc-odin.

You need root to install speed mod kernel so quickest way is to flash a pre rooted rom.

No need to do anything, just boot in cwmr and use restore option and select the nandroid backup file created while you did backup earlier.
boot into CWM > backup and restore > restore or restore from internal SD ( as applicable) > select the backup u want to restore...
Do i need to be in the same kernel where i did the back up? Because i tried to restore from paranoid jb to paranoid ics and its not working

Hydracore works for jb and ics both, flash it and you will be good to restore, after restoring backup, flash hydracore again if you want to.

yes u need to be on the same kernel in which u did the backup
Hi, I just got my Galaxy S I900 today.
It has stock froyo 2.2 on it.
I want to flash JB.
Is it possible to just root my phone then flash Jelly bean without getting Gingerbread first?
Thanks.

You need to flash a 2.3.6 ROM, then get cwm (custom kernel) then flash cm10.1 three times. First time you flash it, you will get an error so don't worry.

Flash 2.3.6, root it using a custom kernel.
But install CM9 first and let it boot before flashing CM10.1 three times. Just to make sure you don't lose your IMEI.

The lost IMEI "bug" is fixed. Even if he does lose it, the .zip backs it up onto the sdcard and he can simply copy that folder (Efs) to the root of his phone.
