[Q] Optimizing GPS reception - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yes, I know it has been discussed before. However I didn't understand what is the most recommended software solution(I have tried the hardware one).
As of now I didn't touch any settings, except changing the NTP Pool to my country.
If it matters, I'm on Infinitum Rom.

GPS aids, the donate version. Bad UI, but excellent results. Always works wonders for me. There's also fasterfix, but it's not as extensive.

The glgps daemon, jupiter.xml, and you! (How to make the GPS behave better)

Hi Vibrant owners!
I made a post over in the Captivate forum about how we can configure the GLGPS daemon in our phones (this is used to control the GPS behavior)
Attached are some update.zips with a new glgps daemon pulled from the Nexus S, secgps.conf and a jupiter.xml configuration inside. The GPS chipset is common among all SGS models, so this should work for you. Please try it, feedback is appreciated!
Sweet!

I thought the vibrant does not use the jupiter.xml
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I know at least one model of Vibrant does (Bell), not sure about the others (CDMA does not I believe)
With the vibrant froyo leaks, we now use gpsd and jupiter.xml Samsung decided to make it the same across the board. At least for the i9k, cap and vib. Not sure aboit the epic and fascinate though

i really don't understand these "fix your gps" threads. Hasn't it already been fixed a while back with the newer 2.2 roms? Mine is just fine now.

Wow. Your like saying that people doesn't have to fix their gps if yours has been already fixed.
im saying if you've upgraded to a new rom like most here then it should have been fixed. what kind of fix are you expecting a 100/100 Sat lock the instant you turn on the GPS app?

Yeah it should have been fixed, but to some it isn't. Maybe because of the hardware or other issues.

I'm not expecting that, we all just want it to be usable like having a better accuracy.
sorry it's getting late and my brain is not fully functional ^_^ though it is sorta confusing how the same hardware can produce different results with the newer 2.2 roms.
It's not the same though.
The antenna got revised in October 2010. See the post about the gps fix in the Vibrant general forum.

ic... that's even more depressing lol. you would think a newer antenna would fix it.

It seems the newer antenna did fix it - the older design is unreliable so "identical" hardware can have different GPS performance depending on how much the connection has worked loose.

if you compare to HTC model like HD2, you will see that vibrant is very slow altough gps is fixed...I once use htc hd2 with MDJ mod for android GPS is real fast, never more than one minutes from start ( case compared when u totally delete gps data) I don't know how HTC did it...just for your guy to concern
My GPS has never worked and I've tried every ROM and every fix. Sure I can get a lock on 8 of 12 satellites, and I can easily get 10 foot accuracy. As soon as I try to use Navigation, it sucks. It'll jump around by a few feet here and there, and that's enough to totally throw off the navigation. All of a sudden it thinks I'm the wrong street and its telling me to turn around.
im sorry guys, that sucks. mine has been fine for a while now. and i navigate quite a bit as I am new to Cali. Initially it truly pissed me off when I was on 2.1, telling me i'm staying on the highway when i infact took the off ramp etc... lol. I'd get a replacement.
Can anyone ever say the word GPS without sending everyone into a pissing frenzy?
BACK ON TOPIC:
OP which one do you recommend starting out on for us Vibrant owners?
I highly.. very highly recommend Sombionix' Nero 3. I've used a lot of roms and this one is very very fast. And I usually refrain from saying "fast" because most phones are initially fast when new roms are installed but this one definitely deserves it even after massive app installs and use.
I tryed out the google version and it killed my GPS it sees 12 birds but won't connect to any.
Which do I install? I have a Tmobile Vibrant. You have 3 files listed. Thanks.

data connection gets stuck

hi there
as i mentioned in the thread description, my data connection randomly gets stuck. what means that the "up"-arrow stays lightened, and i cant connect to the internet, no matter what im using (web browser, tapatalk,...).
this seems to be totaly random, since i can not reproduce it.
this always lasts like 2mins and its all fine again, after that.
as far as i can remember this only happens when using the FoyoMod (both 2.5.0 and 2.6.0) not on any cm-rom, well for as far as i can remember ...
using wifi its working without problems
and another question, but this is for sure depending on TheFroyoMod-rom: i cant download attached files with tapatalk.
my device:
[email protected] 2.6.0 (all standart: kernel, vsel, frequencies,...)
Baseband: 3GSMEPU91a_u_91.09.04I

I used to have those problems as well. I've deduced that it might just be a dead spot. When I am at school in a certain classroom, I lose all connection and get the same symptoms that you're describing. It might be a dead spot, in which you can't really do much about that.
thanks for your reply.
but i mostly use my phone at work, and there i stay at the same spot for 8h, even if i dont move my phone it works again after a while. i still can do calls, what means i still have a signal???
there is something i found on the web, its called dns-fix which i tried to apply usind aor, but when i do so, it replies: already applied. so i guess its already integrated in cm7
Sent from my Milestone using Tapatalk
I guess it all depends on your office building as well. A lot of cement and basements make the cell signals hard to pass through, so you might be stuck. Are you able to use wifi?
When you're somewhere else, say, at home, does your 3G work properly?
its at home as well. its no congret there just shacks, but even under free air with nothing around me it happens. and yes wifi works perfectly then, it testet it at home, and also calls are able.
and like i said above the outbound traffic arrow stays lightend, just as it is somehow stuck.
well gues i just have to live with it
Sent from my Milestone using Tapatalk
hrmm I experience the same thing sometimes.
I don't think this is limited just to Milestone/Droid. I have friends with Defy and Xperia X10 and they also get drop outs.
I think it must depend partially on the software (I seem to get better 3G connection under Gingerbread). Also when I restart the phone/reinstall the OS my connection comes back.
Also it probably depends on location and the cell provider.
I guess 3G is not perfect to rely on yet. Hopefully in the next couple of years it will be as reliable as ADSL! But for browsing basic stuff it works fine.
I know that one of the tricks that I've found works SOMETIMES is to turn the wifi on, then turn it off again. It seems to "wake up" the 3G and sometimes gets it back to normal.
alright then thank you for the advises

Need input on how G2X functions as a phone

Considering buying the G2X in 3 days although I am having serious misgivings after reading some of these threads which list the serious issues this device seems to be plagued with. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on how the device functions as a phone such as call clarity and volume through headset and speaker phone clarity and volume. Also apparent signal strength etc. Any and all help is warmly received.
I had the 2x for a month nov. And i will say that the phone have some problems.but its a great phone, and many people are working on it, so it will be a very good phone. I will recommend it to every body. Sorry the bad english.

The sound is god. Also with speaker. I had a desire hd before, muts better sound on the 2x. I think the small problems with this phone, will be fixed. And we will end up with a fantastic phone, and very very fast.

Thanks again I probably will
I have the phone since last friday (Vodafone Germany tho) and it looks like I got a good one lol... I also read all those threads here weeks before getting it and actually made sure that I wouldnt have any issues getting a new one from Vodafone if I had lots of problems.. turns out I dont. Had a few forcecloses the first day (even F-Secure crashed but I never ever launched it so far) but since then not a single one. Also no reboots or major laggs or something similar as reported in that other thread.
The sound quality is actually pretty good, way better then the Nexus One, the speaker is way better.
GPS is fast enough, didnt experience any trouble at all.
But I am going to install a Custom Rom as there are a few lagg spikes when launching apps and stuff but nothing really bad. I just want to see how fast this phone can really be
Also, keep in mind that the device we'll get in the US will be different in build and software from the international version. The speaker/mic combo will most likely be similar, but things like GPS and call quality can vary drastically because they're based on software.

Good point! I use GPS a lot every day and most of the day. I have a Vibrant now and the GPS leaves a lot to be desired. Teetering back and forth as to whether to pull the trigger and get it or not. Probably will though. Been waiting for it to come out for awhile.
I had a Nokia N8 at home, it could find satelites really quick. The LG2X can't.
The speakers are really the worst hardware part of the device.. really bad sound it's the biggest negative. Overall it is a great phone , the best phone I've ever had, and enjoyed the most.. just too sad the soundquality + speakers is really bad imo.. but my contacts told me that they can here me very good.. so its just you suffering on that not the callers -_-
I can just recommend it. But with the sidenote you to check those things by yourself first live, if these attributes are really that important to you, so you don't get disappointed after.
Would like to hear your thoughts of it when u use it, i believe they could have improved G2x compared to the LG2x, cause it has other messsurements and vanilla android so i guess they reacted to the feedback which was given by the buyers.
Sorry for this long text xD
PS. Just tested GPS again.. and it found within 30 seconds within the building =) GPS is fine!
Every phones has its problem. Nothing is perfect. The o2x as a phone is good. No major issues about it. And after installing paul's MCR, it became a lot lot better.
GPS works fine for me. It just depends where am i. There are places where i can only get a fix after 30-60 seconds but most of the time i can get a fix for 5-10 secs only.
Hey guys, thx for the opinions.
At this moment I have an HTC HD2 and after having owned a numerous number of HTC's I am fedup with them. It seems they make models that always have some issue either batt wise, speaker wise etc.
As I use my phone mainly for gps is there someone who can upload a video on youtube showing the startup with gps status or something?
Also my HD2 has/had a quick lock but the receiver fails in other departments like having jitter on the output making the gps go in crazy steps or circles.
I would also love to see a video of how the screen looks in sunlight and how the speaker sounds when you are using the device as navigation in the car.

Thanks so much for your kind input. This is just the kind of feedback I need to make a prudent decision. My only phone is a cell phone so I need the phone part to be first class as well as the GPS which I use on a daily basis(also hourly). Still undecided oh well I guess I still have 2 more days to make a decision.

Sorry to say but IMHO i9000 GPS is bad. You can make some settings mods to get faster fix but that's all. It is somehow working when you have good sats view (it reports good signal with fix from enough number of sats) but when for ex. driving trough inferior sat signal area (streets surrounded by tall buildings, etc.) you are out of luck. Fix position goes to hell.
I've experimented with my old wm phone, i780. It has not so good Qualcom GPS One chipset and I managed to send it's fix using BT to i9000. Guess what? It was ok! Sat fix was reported in i9000 as a poor accuracy but in fact it was ok and stable while using it with maps applications. Go figure! Old, bad i780 GPS shows better then "I can see more satellites with stronger signal and I have better accuracy" i9000 build in GPS.
After this test I connected external BT GPS on MTK chipset. I have to wait ~30 second for fix but after that I have no nasty surprises driving my car through "canyon" streets.
Its got nothing to do with the ROMs. I9000 is well known for its ****ty GPS.

Would you share with us, where you got this wisdom from?
My SGS works perfectly well regarding GPS performance for more than 6 months now not depending on my current location: US west coast and Hawaii it worked great as well as in Italy and various parts of Germany. Fix is usually the within seconds (presuming free sight to the sky). Also the android version had no influence: I started with stock 2.2, upgrading to various 2.2.1, 2.3.3, 2.3.4 and now 2.3.5 (also with different custom kernels).
Where and when did you having GPS problems get your SGS? Maybe there is batch with faulty soldered GPS antennas. However, I don't see a reason why the SGS should have a bad GPS performance in general.

very poor GPS reception?

Ìs anybody else experiencing very poor GPS reception? Compared to my old HTC Desire, the reception and logging with Sportypal or MyTracks is waaayyyy off. Always! No spikes or something, but really just way off, 20 meters left/right. I have this issue both with stock ROM and Temasek's CM7. It really sucks, logging basically almost becomes unusable for running, because workouts need a lot of post adjustments.
I tried using a utility caled "GPS Test", to download latest GPS coördinates for Assisted GPS, but it actually doesn't make a difference.

You mean before you get a GPS lock at all? Or you mean you get a GPS fix quickly, but it's accurate only after 10-15 minutes?

@dmxl,
Maybe you can try out this app called FasterFix featured in XDA:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/speed-up-your-gps-fix-with-fasterfix/
CM7 for the 2x comes with europe.pool.ntp.org as GPS server.
If you're not living in Europe your fix time should get better when you change to a server for your region with the FasterFix app (get it from the PlayStore).
In case this won't help either try the GPS Aid app which does tweak some more values - but I've never used it and don't know if it will help or not.

Ok tried with only 2G. Accuracy is even worse. Overall, with either 2G or 3G, it's só bad to such an extent, that it would be more accurate for me to just not use GPS, and draw the line myself in the browser with Sportypal or My Tracks and fill in the minutes of the total duration.
It's basically unusable compared to my old HTC Desire (which I sold, stupid me).
Man oh man, must be a pretty crappy GPS chip....

Same here, i've used Temasek's CM7 Kang for a loooooong time but switched to Owain's CM9 Kang a couple of weeks ago and ever since i've been getting faster and amazingly accurate fixes, even indoors.
Not sure if that's coincidence or a real improvement though.
