when you download a rom unzip it the boot.img is included sometimes it is in a folder you should be able to find it pretty easy also known as kernel but it is more than that

its in a folder inside the rom .zip file. you have to extract it and flash it via flashboot.
Just to confirm the command to flash a boot.IMG is fastboot flash boot.img?

Use holics
Holics is a great rom to use i have been using it since i got my vivid a month ago, its made by bananacakes, and he makes a great rom with updates it often! But it is easier to use roms with s-off, and thats not too hard to do either.
FOR HTC Vivid !!!!!!!

Hey why u want to be with S ON.
Go through my thread in the below link and will give you better idea and why S OFF is necessary!!!!!

Let me know if it helped you!!!
I don't think any of the ROMs are S-on compatible.
and I don't think any of them have any kind of guides, FAQs, or any useful information, ESPECIALLY NOT USUALLY IN THE FIRST FEW POSTS OF THE BUILD THREADS...
That is of course other than the download links and screenshots I'm pretty sure.

The only thing is that if you want the kozmik kernel, you cant because he doesnt support son anymore
Sent from my HTC Raider 4G LTE running ICS.
Its not about supporting s-on lol, you can flash w/e rom you want even if your s-on, the only thing is it WONT flash the boot.img(zimage+initramfs), so you would only need to extract the boot.img from w/e rom you want and then flash it on fastboot, people need to understand that s-off isnt need for flashing roms or kernels or w/e mod, s-off just give the recovery the ability to backup/flash boot/recovery partiitons and you can use very low lvl fastboot commands, stop confusing your self over s-on/s-off guys lol, its not quantum physics ;P

This is important how?
Not asked sarcastically, as a beginner. This RUU is the stock loading tool? Can it be loaded and not lose root? These are the first two questions that hit me first. Is this the way to return the Dinc to stock form?
Yes, this is the way to return your Dinc to stock. Although I don't think it touches your S-off if your boot loader is s-off.

True. If you want this, but still want root, use Wildstang's rooted OTA. Like he said, he built if from this (or based it off this, mind my ignorance as I'm thinking it means the same thing).
After Running so many different Roms over the last year, if kinda feels good to stick with a stock rom for a while......with a few mods
Many thanks Football for keeping us up to snuff on the RUU's throughout the life of this phone. Much appreciated.

Just an RUU wont change the bootloader security flags. You have to run S-ON from Unrevoked to get it back on. So it should be fine.

Most of the ROMs have directions for S-on and S-off.
So if you find one that interests you, just check the first or second post in its thread and it should set you straight, man.

The link ronnie498 is actually a good guide. But basically put, you need to unlock the bootloader, then flash a custom recovery. ROMs are then installed via the custom recovery. It's all in the guide though.

After pushing the bcmdhd.ko to /system/lib/modules, do permissions have to be set (to 644) ?

Hi! I've waited for the official WWE ICS OTA update without "hacking" my IncS.
Now I only want to root my phone.
I'm not yet interested in flashing custom roms and I don't need S-OFF.
Is there any way to do this without losing my current installation and data? I've read lots of threads, I hear a lot about Blackrose but still don't understand if I can do what I'm looking for.
I would really appreciate any help on my question.
Thanks in advance.

The only option you have at this point in time is to unlock your bootloader using HTCDEV.com. Once it is unlocked, you can flash 4EXT Touch recovery and then from recovery mode install su-3.1.3.zip to apply root and superuser to your current ROM.
Unfortunately the unlock procedure will wipe all of your data and apps, so that really doesn't address the solution you are looking for, but that is the current option you have.
Thanks for your quick reply tpbklake.
Sorry for bothering you a little more....
By your experience do you think that in the future it will be possible to do what I want without needing to wipe data?
Or does this seem impossible to do?

Also if you do the htc-dev-method you won't achieve "full" root access. Also your warranty will be lost without any chance to regain it.

Use fastboot to flash recovery. Wipe data and both cache in recovery. Flash your Rom then turn phone off and go back into fastboot and flash the boot.img by typing fastboot flash boot boot.img make sure its all in the same folder there's plenty of guides on how to do this
Edit. You will have to do this on every Rom you install being s off

You don't need to downgrade as your hboot is the updated one. Keep in that you'll have to flash boot.img (fastboot flash boot boot.img) by extracting it out from the rom.zip after flashing the rom via recovery.

I have to install the file boot.img each time I want to install a new ROM?

Yes you have to flash boot.img everytime you flash a new rom. Avoiding flash boot.img will prevent the phone from passing the splash screen.

i don't think it is for the One
in time you will probably get it, but quicker and like the One S you'll get radio installers like Tecardo's and MrHydes that require no s-off. Some put the radio into System partition a way to bypass not having s-off
One S has no s-off but with these tools from the devs, no problem

Unrevoked is not for this device. It was initially developed for Evo 4g (unrEVOked). That thread was linked for clarification of ramifications of s-off. Generally you need s-off to update radios.

I am surprised OP did not have issues trying that
Managed to screw up the wifi on my phone when playing around with the OTA update for 1.29.401.12 so if anyone could provide the stock radio for 1.28.401.7 which is flashable using fastboot that would be very much appreciated.
Rom is not rooted and I would like to try and keep it that way if possible.
How did you manage to flash a radio thru fastboot? There's not even any S-Off yet. But if your phone is already S-Off and you indeed flashed a broken radio then mostlikely you're out of luck for now. Unless someone with the same phone as you with S-Off will find you here.

Posted in the radio thread and will see how it goes... feel like a right noob but thankfully 3g is working fine.
Looks like I will have to wait for the official OTA firmware.zip for the UK WWE variant as I now have the issue with paid apps not installing which I believe from reading these threads is to do with the kernel.
