[Q] LPF & LPY Kernels for ICS - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I thought I read that installing the LPY Kernel you might risk not being able to reinstall another ROM if you want to change back.
Is the LPF safer, or is there still an issue with it, also? Did I misread that warning about the LPY kernel?
Thanks!

You are able to revert to GB from both those kernels/Roms. However,
they are not safe. There's been reports of superbricks on both those
versions.
The only safe things for now are
1. Gingerbread Roms
2. CM9-based ICS Roms (official Xplod's CM9, Asylum, Paranoid and MIUI).
However, CM9 Roms don't have TW framework and some of the TW apps
are not included.

A question from a Samsung beginner. What does LPY and LPF mean ?
Thank you

As long as the firmware that you want to flash is Stock, you will be able to update, but you will lose Root.
The Rom in your link is stock but from Taiwan, so the CSC will have limited update options in the future. More details are given in the original thread of this Rom here.
Hope that helped!
Yes thanks.. well as its newer than the LPY German, I just thought maybe it'd be better to install this one instead. What do you suggest?

I suggest not to flash a LPY Rom, there is high risk of bricking your device. If you are not so familiar with this i advice you to look around for details about the procedures.
IMO, flash via PC-Odin a GB Rom, or a Custom GB rom (Chrack's is the Best) and then if you want a custom ICS pick one of the new, such as MidTeam 1.3, CM9, RocketRom etc.
Hope i could help!
I see.. u think even the new Taiwan one LPF would be risky? Cause I read there are many things which are not working in CM9. About MidTeam and Rocket I don't know.. will have to look at them.

LPF is better and safer than LPY.
Since you want the LPF just flash it, many people say that it works fine.
To be clear here, i haven't tried it. I prefer CM9 but it's just a matter of taste after all!
Public Service Announcement:
DO NOT FLASH OR WIPE USING ANY ICS REPACK OR STOCK KERNEL
Not even wiping in stock recovery is safe with affected kernels. Almost all ICS kernels for the GT-N7000 are affected.

Please stay on GB for now... There is a bug on EMMC that effects all leaked ICS roms so far. Read the Public Service Announcment:
Even official LPF rom is effected by this bug.
The ZSLPF official release - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1661590 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...1#post26275391 are the first two reports.

ICS LP8/LP9 safe?

I have read all threads about, but i want to know something:
If i flash a lp8 or lp9 via pc odin,no root, no cwm, just stock, and i do not make any flashing from recovery...is it safe to use lp8 / lp9 stock roms?
thank you
No, there is no 100% safe ICS kernel (except CM9 & Co., which are NOT based on Samsung's N7000 kernel so you lose some functions).
There are SpeedMod and franco's ics modified kernels that are supposed to workaround the bug, however at least 2 people reported bricks with them.
edit:
However, if you don't do a full wipe / factory reset or remove a big file, you should be safe.
If you do need to do a factory reset, make sure you're using a gb kernel, do the reset then flash whatever ICS kernel you want.
It is 100% safe! Follow dr ketan's guide and you will definitely get ur ics working

Yes, and if he bricks his device you are obligated to replace it.
There is ALWAYS a RISK, however MINIMUM it may seem.
Zapped through server hops to XDA forums
Thank you for all your answers!
I will wait a little bit longer for ICS, 'cuz i do not want any problems...
migrating
hi, sorry if i posted a similar question like im about to ask,
currently running on lpy(germany) + cf-root kernel + lpt modem.
i wanna know if there are any safe methods to migrate to other lp9 roms?
thanks in advance

[Q] Is it safe to flash a gb cf root kernel on ics?

Hey Guys! Just needed a bit of help. Is it safe to flash a gn cf root kernel on stock or custom ICS rom?? Like, will I be safe from the superbrick bug if I flash a gb kernel over an ICS one? Any Help will be appreciated! Thanx in advance!
P.S I am sorry if the question is asked before..
its hit and miss really, Some users report that CF root kernel is safe, others say its not.
One kernel confirmed to be safe is Abyss
They have one for GB and one for ICS
Abyss - ICS https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69014495/AbyssNotekernel42CWTouchOriginalLogo.zip
Abyss GB

So if I flash Abyss Note kernel, I am safe from the superbrick bug? But won't the device be already damaged if I flash stock ICS? And also if I use factory reset from recovery or other superbrick commands, will my device get damaged? Sorry for the Q's!
If you flash an Abyss GB kernel for stock ICS (or ICS at all) it won't boot (or give a lot of errors IF it does).
Just use Speedmod or Franco kernels for stock ICS. They are safe.

You are never completely safe from the superbrick, But with abyss, and as said above speedmod (what i use) the command that causes the brick is disabled, So providing you only ever do a full wipe on a KNOWN SAFE KERNEL you will be fine.
There are a few safe kernels now, Im unsure of them all as ive only ever used speedmod & abyss, Feel free to use another one, Just be sure to check if its safe or not.
The bug is in the chip, But the command to trigger the bug is in the ICS kernel, Hence why GB is the ultimate safe option.
Thank you very much guys! I guess that I'll stay on GB till a stable ICS comes out!I really wanted to try the cool mods for ICS! But are you sure that if I use speedmod Wiping or Restoring won't brick my note?
Well no can can confirm 100% that you wont get a brick, Although the chances of that happening on a safe kernel is minimal.
As with all modding you do it at your own risk, I can confirm i have successfully done a full wipe in CWM using both SpeedMod and Abyss kernel, So have 100's of other users too ! So you should be fine
I had doubts at first, So i upgraded to ICS via ODIN without wiping, never had any issues.
Hey...What if I flash a gingerbread cf root kernel on ICS??

Abyss kernel and CM9 ROM
thanks a lot every one.... a lot of info floating around...
but there a re a few questions im not sure about.... i hope if you can help answer them....
1. i checked my GN ICS 4.0.3 rooted stock and it has the chipset known to have emmc bug issue.. so now if I flash using the abyss kernel it should be fine. But do i need to flash it with a ICS ROM only or can I flash it with a pre rooted GB ROM as well?
2. I understand there are two versions of Abyss Kernel. One for ICS and one for GB. Which do i install if i plan to move to GB from ICS official stock? and vice-versa?
3. Is it safe to directly move from rooted stock ICS 4.0.3 to CM9? using Abyss kernel?
4. Just one las thing. When we flash a kernel like Abyss to ensure non bricking, does it mean that the new ROM would use the same kernel (Abyss) ? or would it install its own kernel? For example if i flash Abyss and then flash CM9 ROM, will CM9 use Abyss as the system kernel or will it install its own kernel?
Sorry for asking soo many dumb questions, but i want to get my facts right before i flash.
Thanks in advance.
Just flash abyss kerne if u want flashing any rom with CWMR..
Gb kernel cannot used in ics rom for daily..

azzle, are you sure there is an abyss kernel for ics too ? everyone says abyss is meant for GB only ? where is the original thread please ?
here you go...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362424
read all on that thread bud before you do some actions.
Abyss is a gb kernel, it's useful for doing quick flashing under ics as it's already rooted with cwm baked in. But yeah, I you can't run a ics rom under abyss, but you can install abyss, run wipes, then install ics rom and kernel all in one.

[q] safe kernel for xxlq2 ics

Hi Friends,
I flashed my SGN N7000 with stock ICS rom XXLQ2. I noticed in the xda forum stock ICS rom has a e_mmc fault and can be cause heard brick.
Could anyone suggest me a safe kernel which I can full wipe/ reset facrory and all other recovery options without any fear.
I'm looking forward your earlier response since me new to this android..
Kind Regards
Speedmod or Abyss are known to be safe.
Any 2.3.5 kernel is safe.
Go to here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Download a GB 2.3.5 kernel, and you got yourself a brand new phone. Did the same 2 days ago to go to Paranoid Android ROM v0.4. Can recommend this, I'm very happy with it.
To do this check out this tutorial by me here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5K5Wm_201Y&feature=plcp

I can recommend the Goku Kernel. It's based on Speedmod but comes with a few extras like additional cpu governors... And even the latest beta is stable. What's more funky81 is actively developing his kernel.
By the way because it's based on Speedmod the emmc bug is fixed or more precisely circumvented.

Have anyone tested Full Wipe/Factory reset Stock ICS rom with speedmod kernal..

[Q] Going from LQ3 + Speedmod to ParanoidAndroid

Hi all,
I am on LQ3 with Speedmod K3 Kernel and root.
If I want to try out ParanoidAndroid, is it possible to flash a CM9 kernel (like T**r) via CWM, then flash PA (and then wipe both caches and full reset)?
Or, do I still need to flash a GB rom and kernel and then flash PA?
I think the reason for flashing to GB is because CWM is not safe on the stock ICS kernel, but since I'm on Speedmod, that isn't a problem for me.
Or, is there another reason you need to go back to GB?
thanks,
Rich.

The Devs post those instructions for a reason dude. They have tested the methods and only then posted those instructions. If there is a shorter way, they would have surely posted that instead of the longer roundabout way. Also, I think there was a post somewhere mentioning not to go to the CM9 kernel straight from LQ3....but I've forgotten where it was/is .
Best way is to go back to GB and then flash PA---15 minutes extra vs risking bricking your phone----you do the math
