Hi,
I am eyeing for the sandisk mobile ultra 32gb class 6. It claims to have 30mb/s read speed which is really impressive.
But does galaxy note sdcard reader will be able to handle 30mb/s read speed? Because for what I know most card reader tops at 20mb/s which is why most cards even those class10 ones has read speeds of less than 20mb/s.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

I don't think Note can handle 30 mb/s .. someone with more insight on the hardware of the card reader on Note might be able to help you

That's the 'realism' that I had in my mind. If I have a full 32gb card, and wanted to transfer my pictures and videos, which is what mostly the card will be used up for, how is the transfer speed will be? If I am able to use the full 30mb/s read speed on sandisk mobile ultra card, that can greatly reduce the amount of time to move 32gb of data off the sdcard.
For sdcard application usage within the phone itself, the only thing that I can think of that will use alot of bandwidth on the card is recording full hd video, which a class 6 card is more than enough to handle the write speed. If for read speed, a mere class 2 cards can do 8mb/s read speed which is fast enough to watch your regular hd video, listen to your mp3 etc.
You just can just connect the phone to pc as storage mass and the program will detect the drive. You can start the test using the software.

k heres my 2 cents, my family has 5 galaxy notes. Basically I tried many brands ranging class 4, 6 and 10. First off the class 4 32g are like 40% or so slower than the class 10's. The 2 class 10's I have are all different brand both 32g and I can tell you they don't really make a lot of diff in terms of speed its less than 0.5mb per sec diff (the slower class 10 is same brand as the Note and the other one starts with Lex???). Then you have the class 6 64g which runs up to around 10% or so slower than the class 10. At the end of the day what you find is class 6 and 10 are both fast but the class 4 are dam slow. On my machine I'm using the 64g card. Speed was determined and optimized by SD booster and SD tools.

Anyway, my actual question was, is the GNote be able to handle 30mb/s transfer for the sandisk mobile ultra versions or atleast what is the highest read speed for GNote card reader.
There is one benchmark that I came across somewhere that proves that the card does actually deliever that transfer speed albeit using usb 3.0 port. It takes atleast a regular usb 2.0 reader on a usb 3.0port to achieve it. A usb 2.0 reader on usb 2.0 port barely makes the 20mb/s mark on the same card. So the usb 3.0 port is quite crucial even though a usb 2.0 reader is being used on it.
So yah, the ideal situation is someone actually has the sandisk ultra mobile card + GNote and is willing to give spare time to benchmark it for us and post it here.

I recently upgraded my class 2 card to a class 6 card and noticed when writing a rom to the SD root the speed is the same speed (around 1.75mb/s)?
I'm doing this with the SDCard in the phone and a usb cable.
Also my class 6 is a Adata 8gb class 6, and my class 2 was a SanDisk 2gb.
Would this be the hardware limiting (g1) or something else?
Fwiw when rooting a buddies mytouch3g and his class 4 card it would write much faster (~3-4mb/s).
The speed did increase but it is also having to look through 2x the amount of data as well. I read this somewhere, and I am also Googling it now as we speak to come up with a reference link for you. Basically if you have a 2gb card that's class 2 and class 6 you are going to see a speed increase on the class 6 card, but, if you go from a 2gb class 2 card to a 6-8gb class 6 card, you are not going to see much of an increase if any at all due to the increased size and the time it takes to write data over the card. This is a fragmentation issue as I read it.
Please, don't take this as 100% fact, just something I read when I did my research about 4 months ago.

but you are saying if we go from Class 2 8 Gig to Class 6 8 Gig, there will be a increase?
Sorry guys but your theories are way off=p It's the USB cable thats at fault. Either get a better USB, or put it in a mircosd card reader and you should see speeds roughly at 10mb/s write and 20mb/s read (at least those are mine with a samsung class 6 from amazon=p)
PS: Who ever heard of a 6gb sdcard? they come in exponents of 2: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1,024, 2,048, 4,096, 8,192, 16,384, 32,768....

I pulled the card out and put it on a card reader and it would write about 9-10MB/s, but still only 1.5-1.75MB/s though the G1 (usb mounted).
It's the usb that is limiting you (I think). Think of it as filling a pool with a 12-inch fire house that is running through a funnel=p. Try a different USB cable.

I'm using the same cable for both the G1 and the card reader. I assume its just the G1s USB driver/transfer protocol thats causing the issues.
I ordered a class 6 16gb card to replace the slow-ass class 2 8GB card I had in my HD2.
First of all I couldnt find the format sd tool in my energy rom (1st July) so I had to format the card using vista while the HD2 was connected in disk drive mode. THAT TOOK OVER 1 HOUR.
(Is there a cab file to install the "Format SD Card" tool for the newer energyroms?)
Anyways after formatting (Fat 32, 16KB cluster), I started to copy my 1.4GB sd backup file to the card using the same method as above (disk drive mode)....
My maximum write speed was 2.7MB/sec. Average 2MB/sec.
Class 2 speeds????
After restoring the backup, which took forever, I ran spb benchmark on the card and was gutted to get slightly lower results than the old class 2 I was replacing.
Can the HD2 make use of anything faster than a class 2 card?
Has anyone here tested a class 6 or even 4 card and found good write speeds (~6MB/sec, or ~4MB/sec)?
Does it sound like I have bought a lemon (class 2 labelled as class 6)?
I have spoken to the seller and he is adamant that they ARE genuine class 6. Reckons he tested some of the batch in TrueHD cameras which will not accept <Class6. Seems genuine and some of his feedback states that the cards are Genuine class 6. Which leads me to think that the bottleneck could be the HD2... Does that sound likely?
I'm waiting for a microsd USB reader to arrive so I can test the card outside of the HD2, but Until I can do that... can anyone tell me if a class 6 is wasted in a HD2?
The strange thing is that when browsing photos/wallpapers etc, the thumbnails ARE loading maybe 3x quicker than my old class 2. So I'm pretty confused about this one.
Can anyone shed any light here? Feel free to post benchmark results/screenshots etc.

I get 4-5MB/s both for reads writes with my 16GB class 6 card in disk drive mode.

That is exactly the kind of data I'm looking to compare.
Whith my 'class 6' Im getting just under 3MB/S WRITE and under 6MB/S READ when using the HD2 in disk drive mode.
If I use the card in a USB 2.0 reader I can get around 5.5MB/S Write and ~11-13MB/S read.
Based on this alone would you say my card is a class 6 or not. I'm beginning to think it may be a class 4 re-labelled.
Picture browsing etc is faster with my class 6 but all benchmarks indicate it is identical speed to my genuine Kingston Class 2.
What do you guys reckon, Should I send this card back for a refund???
Well if you're getting 5.5 and over 11MB per second with a card reader then we can safely assume it's class 6. The bottleneck is something to do with the phone, rom, cable or simply the phone doesn't like this particular card etc...
EDIT: Test your class 2 card with the memory card reader and see if you get similar results.

Thank you for helping me clear things up.
Comparing the 'class 6' and the 'class 2' transfer speeds is where I really get confused here.
Transferring a ~700MB .Avi to and from SD using a reader:
Kingston Class 2 8GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 5.4MB/s
Unbranded Class 6 16GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 6MB/s
So, from this, would you say its safe to assume:
1. The class 2 card is a good one, performing at almost class 6 speeds.
2. The class 6 card is 'Genuine' and shouldnt be returned.
3. There is a bottleneck when using the HD2 as a card reader/disk drive. I should be getting more than 2.5mb/s write speeds in this mode.
4? Does 12.5MB/sec sound close to USB 1.1 speeds? could my reader or even USB port (Vista laptop) be another bottleneck?
Once again thank you for helping me make sense of all this.
At least I now know that the 16gb card doesnt really need to be returned.

Well class 2 means you should be getting a minimum 2MB/s speeds and class 6 means you should be getting a minimum 6MB/s.
Seems like you have a very good class 2 card.

Your class 6 is performing to spec.
Personally I would never buy an unbranded card but that's me. A branded card may perform better than there class rating e.g. Your Kingston brand I've always used Sandisk personally...
I've just managed to drum up enough funds to get myself a HD2 and now looking to upgrade my HCSD card to 16GB. To get the "right" class I tried to find the spec on the SD interface but I cannot find anything and the best data I can find is that I shouldn't waste my money on unbranded devices, I would always buy a SANDISK device for something I relied on! For data and communication!
People seem to get appropriate speeds for the class of device they have, if they are branded and sometimes if unbranded. However, there doesn't seem to be anything better than class 6 results debated or given. Is it a VERY rash assumption that the fastest the HD2 interface can go is Class 6?

My experience was positive with higher class micro SD.
At first, I used 8GB micro SD bundled with my HD2 and didn't notice improved loading speed. Later, I changed it with higher class one, same 8GB, with same manufacturer, Sandisk. Higher class one has name "Ultra" on it. Now with changed SD, loading became WAY faster. "Wow" I realized the higher speed of CPU of HD2.
My 2 pennies.
NEVER EVER buy unbranded memory cards!
Keep an eye on Sandisk cards only and even prefer them to Transcend and Kingston.

if you have an External class 4 vs another External class 6 card inside this phone then you copy stuff with Astro File inside the phone you'll notice the difference in speed
and then if you compare the class 6 vs a class 10 external you'll see even more difference
this will be very important when Froyo comes out and we can finally use App2SD, as the apps will write and load faster to & from the SD on a class 10 than a class 6 or 4
don't even bother with a class 2 it'll be painful slow
and that comes by experience running apps on SD on all my previous phones

Are you basing this on a test, or are you just assuming that the class 10 microSD is theoretically faster then class 6 ?
Biased on that tech specification your making an assumption that we should get this class 10?
The question is weather or not the SGS Vibrant Bus and Data lines can transfer speeds of 80Mbits/s through the MicroSD card slot??
* Class 2: 16 Mbit/s (2 MB/s)
* Class 4: 32 Mbit/s (4 MB/s)
* Class 6: 48 Mbit/s (6 MB/s)
* Class 10: 80 Mbit/s (10 MB/s)
I would say lets buy them and test it out.
I just had 6MBs towards my internal and 5MBs towards my external sd card at the same time trough the usb connector while the sd is a class 2 =p
The sgs would stil benefit from a class 10 i bet
I have just placed an order for a Kingston SDC10/16GB.
What would be an accurate way to measure read/write speed once this card is in my phone? Simply hook it up to PC and pump a large file to it, and see what the speed/bandwidth is?
when performing test, you will always get the fastest speed when the disk is new (empty)
so the proper way to test for performance speed, is to fill the SD card 50% with random files or random sizes, then do a speed test
that will show the true performance of the sd card

For what it's worth, my speeds are as follows:
Internal: 7mb/s write and 15mb/s read
External: 15mb/s write and 30mb/s read
External is a Transcend class 10 16gb card, almost full and 1yo

The biggest size available currently is 32GB.
I don't know if even more is possible with microSDHC or if bigger cards will only be possible with SD3.0 (aka SDXC) but that question is not relevant as you can't buy any greater then 32GB yet.
The Class of the SDCard is a measurement for guaranteed minimum speed in random read/write.
The Class does not provide any information about real-world speed or max speed.
For your mobile phone the class is a pretty useless criterion as you don't need any guaranteed minimum speeds but good overall speeds ESPECIALLY sequential.
The guaranteed minimum speed is important for HD Video Cameras for example where you write data all the time at a given speed (resolution).

Don't pick uSD card based on class !! class tels you MB/s for sequential write only... you need a card that is overall fast, I had 16GB class 10 Kingston and data2ext was just horrible!
Now I'm with class 4 Sandisk mobile ultra and it is in fact faster in every test I ran...

i purchased a kingston 8GB class 4 which crapped out. android kept reported sdcard unexpectedly removed. tried all sorts (formatting in windows, android, quick, long, etc).
RMA replacement did exactly the same, so i'm guessing kingston class 4's are best avoided.
If I recall correctly I have a 16GB microSDHC Class 4 card. After applying data2ext with this card, my Quadrant scores hit around 1500, which is crazy.

class 6 is better , but class 10 is even better
I've got a Sandisk Ultra Mobile 16gb SDHC which works fine in the Legend. Make sure you format it with the phone to stop it being dismounted, well known issue and the fix
Hi guys, I am about to purchase my galaxy note next week and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light into the matter..
Which class of micro sd card should I buy? (minimum) I was hoping to get a 64gb but if that would underperform, there would not be much of a sense to it.
The maximum reading/writing I will be doing in the note is probably playing 1080p playback + mirroring it to the tv. maybe some hi definition video recording as well straight to the memory card.. but most often than not, I would play a 720p mkv movie.
Would a class 4 suffice? Any suggestions on which brands I should look at / stay away from?
Class 4 of any decent brand should suffice.
Class 2 cards from Sandisk will also suffice (their read/write speeds are enough for 1080p encoding and decoding). May be a hassle if you regularly transfer a lot of data to and from the card since thats the time when the slower R/W speeds will come into play.
Why get anything less than class 10? If you can afford a Note, you should be able to spare another $20 for a fast sdcard...

i picked up my class 10 a-ram 32gb microsd for $49.95AU + shipping.
it really depends on what you plan to use your note for. if youre filming 1080p video at the default 17mbps, thats about 2mb/s that you'd want minimum for just filming. so any speed should be fine as long as its above class 2. i just prefer faster cards since theyre getting cheaper.

A-RAM is the brand. i bench'd it. write speeds are 11mb/s, read speeds are 14mb/s.
it was one of the random daily specials they had at www.shoppingsquare.com.au a week or so ago.

normally read speeds of class 10 are still higher than write speeds. but the read speeds dont really vary much between classes. my kingston class 10 reads at 12mb/s, my a-ram class 10 reads at 14mb/s, my sandisk class 2 reads at 10mb/s. so if all you need is read speed, then any card will do.
even class 2 or 4 on Sandisk it will work fine. i believe just buy a good make one ( not a fake from China ) , but i bought mine Lexar class 10 and work great , i couldnt be happier.

It doesn't necessarily write faster either!
All the class indicates is the minimum sustained write speed under optimal (i.e. unfragmented) conditions. It says nothing about the read speed, which is what is generally important in mobile devices since they are usually used for content consumption rather than creation.
As NZtechfreak has already mentioned, Sandisk Class 2 cards almost always well exceed the class minimums - I've been using 16gb Sandisk Class 2 cards in my phones for a long time now, and I've yet to get one that had a write speed less than the Class 6 minimum of 6MB/s, and the read speed has always been 20MB/s or above.

I started out with a Kingston Class 2 32GB I had laying around, and then switched to a Class 10 32GB made by PNY that I got from Microcenter for $59.95.
There was a very noticeable difference in photo taking lag and the media scanner, plus app access on the card. Now there is almost no photo lag, from snap to saving. Haven't messed with the video much yet...
I've Samsung class 10 32 gb. It's really good, but my device started rebooting because of it. "System Process has stopped working."
What I found out is that after removing my micro sd my device is a hell FASTER than before!!!
Maybe a faulty micro sd, no since it works fine in my pc and other devices.
I want to check does any of you have the same problem???
