[Q] "package loader" doesn't allow "Install" option after update to 904
First of all, I've searched the forums and looked at the various topics it shows when I typed in the title for this post - definitely not a nube, I've flashed, bricked, unbricked, bricked, unbricked my phone 3 or 4 times, but this one has me stumped! Bare with me, I'm Danish, but I speak pretty good English... Mods - if this isn't where it should be, please publicly admonish me and put it where it should go.
Curious one: after I flashed my phone to 904, I now can't update anything "sideloaded" from Amazon or Slide-Me because the "package loader" (APK installer) refuses to let the "Install" button work. "Cancel" works just fine, of course.
(and yes, I know - now there's a 905 out there - but first things first, I've tried even after installing a 'virgin' 902 using Moto-Fastboot, but I got an assert failure on MTD:Boot)
I re-rooted my phone after flashing using "Motofail", which gave me access to all my backups and even though my ClockwordMod backup said the MD5 has didn't match I used Titanium Backup to try to extract files from it - and found that the MD5 doesn't match because there is no MD5 file there at all.
I was able to use the various options in Titanium Backup to replace all my apps, but at this point every time I try to install anything that's not from Google's Play Store I get to the point where the installer asks be to "Install" or "Cancel" and the install button appears available (not greyed out), but it doesn't work.
Has anybody else seen this? Can you tell me how you get around it, or what I need to do to fix it (other than trying to flash 905)??
One more thing: this new "Screen locked" button keeps showing up on my screen that was never there before - and it doesn't always ask me to swipe my pattern if that button is there. I've got Launcher Pro installed, JuiceDefender Ultimate and an alternative swipe screen, which I've already check, double-checked and triple-checked the configuration files for what might be causing the "Screen Locked" button to appear.

Update: the "No Install button working" problem just went away after two days - I didn't do a thing (that I know about). Weird - I've had this happen once before. Anyone have a guess as to the security lock bypass where it won't require my pattern to unlock, just a tap on the "Click to unlock" button? I have my security set to require a password any time the screen is turned off, so - that's my first guess, but setting it to "One minute" (same as the screen timer) does nothing, so I changed it back. I really do NOT like the idea of it just letting anyone pick it up and bypass my security lock! I know most people prefer it the other way (stay unlocked for a certain period of time without requiring you to keep putting you lock code/pattern in), but if I turn the screen off, I want it to prompt me for my pattern lock every time.

Found my own answer...
OK, not to the one about why "Package Installer" refused to work for a few days, but why I'm not getting the screen lock every time I turn my screen off any more:
It's "JuiceDefender Ultimate" - you need to set 's' ("Screen off") = 'l' ("Lock") time in the sliders under the "Timeout" settings on the Controls tab, and have your main settings set to lock on "screen off" instead of timed. The 'h' ("Home") setting in that same slider seems to have no effect on my device - anybody else observe differently? One things that always disappears when you flash is JuiceDefender's settings, even if you backup and later restore from /SDCARD or /SDCARD-EXT partitions. I don't know why - I suppose the subject for another question at some time in the future.
By the way, running the latest flash-only on device overclock to 1.2GHz (well, you do have to have Rummy's Toolbox so you can drop to Terminal mode and futz with the file) is the BOMB!!! Bio-***** is screaming along at 1.2GHz whenever I need the power. I'm in like (again)...
For the curious - it's right here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594804

[Q] MY Phone Number

I have been successfully using the Verizon FIOS remote control app to control my TV FIOS STB and it is much nicer to use than the standard IR remote.
To get it to work originally using a nightly (circa 128), I had to persuade the Nook that it had a phone number as this is registered against one set in the STB. I did this by going into Settings/Call Settings/Additional Settings. This gives a network or SIM card error but when OK'd allow me to manually enter a phone number which then worked fine and continued to work through many nightly updates.
Something has now changed (I am currently on nightly 200) as I find that I have to re-register the FIOS app almost daily to get it to work.
On checking I find that the Phone Number setting gets lost periodically and set back to Unknown and I have to manually enter it again.
Does anybody know whether CM7 behaviour has changed with respect to the storage of the Phone Number? I realise it would normally be on a SIM, but it does seem to stick around for quite a while on the Nook before getting lost.
Any luck with this? I've been trying to figure out a way to do this for a while. I am unable to set a number as you described as all settings are greyed out. I'm also on nightly 200+. Seems like there would be a system file we could edit to fake the number, or something like that. Was thinking about setting up a SIP account to try it, but I doubt that will work.

I have made some progress investigating this but have not got a final solution yet.
First, I can set my phone number up even though it is not a phone. I go into Settings, Call Settings, Additional Settings. The screen blurs and brings up a dialog box saying Call settings Error - Network or SIM card error. If I OK that then I see 3 menu items. The first 2 are grayed out but the 3rd "My Phone Number" is enabled. I select that and can enter a Phone Number. Are you saying you get the error and then all 3 options are grayed out?
Once entered I can view the Phone number via Settings, About Tablet, Status.
So far so good. The phone number setting does not normally survive a reboot, and also typically reverts to Unknown after a couple of days even without a reboot.
I have traced the Phone number setting to be stored in com.android.phone_preferences.xml which is in /data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs
But when the Phone number disappears it doesn't disappear from this file so there is some more complex interaction with trying to read a non-existent SIM first. So far I have traced the code involved to MyPhoneNumber.java and MSISDNEditPreference.java which are in the CyanogenMod-android_packages_apps_Phone-5d2764c.
I am still working on understanding this to see if there is some work-around to make the setting stick better. Currently I just have to check the phone number manually and set it again when it disappears.
Hmmm. When I go into call settings, all settings are greyed out except for internet call settings at the very bottom. I see the additional settings field you are speaking of but as its greyed out nothing happens if I click it. Weird.

Yes. That is strange. All my settings in Call Settings are enabled even though most are inapplicable. I don't think I have done anything to explicitly enable them and I'm on a standard Nightly 240 with the updated SystemUI.apk which turns off the phone signal bars. But I've never had these greyed out with any nightly build before.
Anybody else comment on whether their whole Call settings are enabled / disabled?
There is also a setting in build.properties in the system folder with a key called
keyguard.no_require_sim
I think this may have effect on how the OS treats calls which access the SIM. On my system this is currently set to 1. I might try playing with other values like true, 0 to see what effect that has.
Another theory as to why your call settings may be greyed out is that it they may get disabled in airplane mode.
Now this could be an issue even if you have set and subsequently cleared airplane mode as I believe the airplane mode setting doesn't go away entirely and can cause problems.
There is a command line way of clearing this setting completely which I did once when I set airplane mode on. Search for something like airplane sqlite to find the instructions.
That was it. I was stuck in airplane mode, and must have been for a long time. I used Android Assistant to clear the setting and it worked. I'm able to set my number and use fios mobile remote now! Thanks for your help.
Where did you get that updated systemui.apk to clear the cell signal bars? Now that I got the airplane mode off I have the signal strength there for no reason.
I got the SystemUI.apk from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...60542&page=547
I just replaced the one in system/app. If you overwrite then you might get status bar forced close but a system reboot will sort that out and I haven't had signal bars since.
I've now put this in a zip that I can use to install after any nightly update I do as I've now found there is a wifi patch to deal with any remaining SOD issues although I haven't had one of those for a long time now.
Hopefully this stuff will get put into the main build before too long.
Looks like your link got clipped. Getting a page not found error.
Also, do you have any instructions on how to put the .apk into a zip for re-install after you do an upgrade? I'm assuming its not as easy as just ziping the file up?
Updated link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960542&page=547
Yes. It is as easy as zipping the file up, but you have to create a matching folder structure to determine where the file goes. So in the case of the SystemUI file you create a folder called system containing a folder called app, put the file in the app folder and zip it so that system is in the root of the zip.
Correction: I thought that zip method was working but it wasn't. I had manually put the files in anyway and that worked OK. Then I was testing the zip, but it was actually failing. You need to put the files in a zip with the meta-inf etc. I think this link gives instructions
http://alldroid.org/default.aspx?g=posts&t=855
No. That doesn't work either as it uses an older method of scripting no longer supported. Apparently it needs to use Edify scripting now. It looks like some people add files to the gapps package, but I'm not clear yet whether it has to be re-signed, and I don't particularly want to redo gapps just to do this minimal patch.
I think I now understand how to produce an update zip that works.
I first took a gapp zip and stripped out all the existing files under system leaving the meta-inf alone. I put in the patch files in the appropriate folders under system. I then modified the updater-script in the meta-inf tree to just mount system, run package_extract_dir("system", "/system"); and unmount system with changes to the ui_print
I then signed the zip using the win-sign utility available here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=629151&highlight=sign+zip+files
I tried this out by first updating to nightly 246 and then applying my patch containing the SystemUI and the wifi driver that fixes SOD and that seemed to work OK.

[Q] Lockscreen protection on miniCM9

First off I'm using nAa's new ICS rom.
I tried to create a VPN to figure out what exactly it was and I was prompted to put on lock screen protection.
Now I don't want it anymore and I can't get rid of it in the security settings or the VPN settings, or any other settings that I've searched for that matter.
In the lock screen section of security section, the "None" option is grayed out and under it says "Disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage"
Any help would be appreciated!
Don't take it hard on yourself...
No need to take it hard for yourself, simply reset your phone via recovery and you'll have the factory settings again.
You can backup all you staff via Titanium backup.
here is a complete tutorial for you....http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-use-titanium-backup-for-android-complete-guide/
Enjoy
Reset too many times...
I've done that so many times now and I was hoping for a more simple answer.
I feel really dumb, though, because just before reading your reply I realized that removing the VPN that I had created did the trick.
For what reason the lock screen requires a password/pattern when there's a VPN stored on the phone I shall never know.
Clarify your situation
Being a newbie doesn't mean to be dumb
Of course there are lots of other ways, but what's your exact problem right now?
well, different Roms, have different settings but totally when you are going to change something which you have created before like a pattern/pass,an account or a vpn,the devices needs to know that the Owner is gonna change setting and simply asks you the pass.
Was It clear?

[Q] Standby wifi and OS differences with GS2

I have a Samsung GS2 (with 2.3.3) and I just got a P970 which I upgraded to (2.3.4) for use with a foreign SIM.
I didn't do much research and thought 'they're both Android GB, they'll be the same' - ho ho. Had a bit of a fight with the p970 but eventually got all my apps etc installed so it's very similar to my GS2 which is what I want... Not that the GS2 way of doing things is particularly better I just want them both to be usable in exactly the same way to avoid frustration.
I've noticed some things that I really want to fix:
1. The GS2 leaves wifi on all the time, whether it is asleep or not. I want this because I use push email with K9. The p970 turns the wifi off when the phone is asleep - so K9 uses mobile data for email, which is a pain. I used titaniumbackup to move the K9 install and settings from the GS2 to the p970 - I also later removed it and installed it through the market. No difference. Can I force wifi on while the phone is asleep?
2. The scroll feel of the p970 was very light with no friction - pages scrolled on forever gradually coming to a stop. I managed to fix that (removed the lgscroller in the build.prop) but the p970 has a 'glow' effect when you try to scroll beyond the end of a list (the list doesn't move any more, the bottom of the list glows blue) whereas the GS2 has this 'elastic' effect (you can scroll the list right off the screen but it moves at half speed and springs back into place when you let go.) Can I replace this somehow?
3. In Dolphin HD, the GS2 scroll snaps to axes - if I scroll vaguely vertically, it knows I mean 'scroll vertically'. The P970 interprets anything other than a very deliberate vertical scroll as meaning 'scroll diagonally'. It's a pain. What on earth causes this?
4. The included mms.apk is crap. Can't insert contacts as plaintext? I want the GS2 mms.apk - I tried to adb install it but it failed on dependencies. Is it possible? I am using Handcent on the p970 now after trying Go SMS, tbh not really liking ether.
Apart from all that it's fine albeit a bit slow. Biggest gripe is the positioning of the unlock button.
Any advice?
I really don't know the others, but for #1 you go to settings>wireless>wi-fi settings>advance[press menu button the square one]>wi-fi sleep policy there you can choose to never sleep
Thanks for that, didn't even know there was a submenu to the wifi menu. Wifi now remains on regardless!
#2 you would have to install a Cyanogen ROM, there you can choose what to happen when you scroll past the end of the list (Glow, Bounce or Glow+Bounce). The official Rom (and those built on it) don't support changing the way the "scroll past end of list" animation, it's only present in ROMs built on Cyanogen (for example the MIUI one).
Now, i don't know how stable the Cyanogen ROMs are, you'll have to read about it in the forum and decide if it's worth it for you or not.
#3 i saw that the Optimus Black interprets pressing/dragging on the screen a little different from other phones, probably comes from the way LG implemented the digitizer interface, i don't think you can change that (i very often drag icons on the launcher instead of starting the apps even though i do the exact same movement as i do on my Samsung Spica and there i never had this problem).
#4 the applications bundled with the SG2 have dependencies on libraries on the phone, you would have to also copy the files from /system/lib the problem is that you can't just copy all the files since many will be present on both phones but with different version and dependencies.
You would probably have to experiment by adding different libs and seeing if it works or not.
I tried only once to port and app and after several hours i got to a point where the lib required by the app was already present on the phone but a different version, i tried adding the other version which crashed many of the already existing apps so i gave up
Thanks for that - I understand the Cyanogen ROM isn't stable yet (?) so I'll wait a bit before trying that... need the thing usable as a phone, can't keep bricking it!
For the last point, is there a way to identify from the APK which libraries it's looking for? Something like the 'ld' command in Linux?
bluetooth locked
hello everybody!
I can't use bluetooth.
I open settings, open wireless and network settings, tap bluetooth, enter access bluetooth settings, tap make discoverable, (untap make discoverable then), but:
1.) I can't scan for devices: tap and press but nothing happened,
2.) I can't modify my device name, I have one, but can't rename,
3.) I have a long list of bluetooth devices discovered but not paired, but I never allowed, and
4.) I can't remove these devices from my Bluetooth pairing list:
when I press and hold on the name of the device I want to remove, applications close and get out from settings.
5.) I can't discover and pair my bluetooth headset.
Get out the baterry, get out SIM, get out micro sd: not working!
I have 2 same smartphones. the another optimus black in working very well, including the same headset.
can you advise me, please?
thanks.

Is it on another ROM maybe? If so, which one do you use? Or did you maybe restore a backup of another phone?

Bugs in stock ROM?

I've encountered a few weird things with my O4X (Stock v10h / Android 4.0.3), which were confirmed by at least one more user. As LG complains I were a "single case", and they don't know of any problem like that, I seek more confirmation. So could some of you running stock please check whether they can reproduce some of the issues, and state so (together with the ROM version, as it might as well affect more recent versions)?
Orientation in Exif data: portrait images are marked "landscape", while landscape images are marked "unknown" (strangely, the gallery app shows the images in correct orientation, so it seems the media database has separate data on that)
energy saving mode: one can set the device to enter such at a given percentage, so several energy settings should automatically be adjusted (configurable; e.g. WiFi off, screen brightness reduced, etc.). Unfortunately, when reaching the given level one just gets a popup "Do you really want to enter energy saving mode?" -- which makes absolutely no sense, as one might miss that if the device is e.g. in the pocket
Similar thing with network selection: I've set that to "automatic", but all the while get a popup "please select" when signal gets weak (see: Annoying popup to "select network")
Another issue is the mafia-ware "Remote Call Service", which (after device initialization) asks your confirmation that LG might access your data. The user only has two choices: "Yes" or "Later". Chosen later, the popup re-appears after ~30 minutes. So one cannot say "No" without rooting the device and freezing/removing that "Remote Call" app. LG support claims they've got no complaints so far, so they see no reason to act. Is really everybody happy with that?
Together with your checks, if you can confirm the one or other of above listed items, would you please complain to LG as well -- so they see some "force"?
Thanks!
At least one other annoying thing I was able to work around: the incomplete battery stats, which were missing the "bars" (for network signal, display, awake, etc.) below the graph. Here LG obviously screwed up the call. If you want the correct graph, it's found in the Settings app's ".Settings$PowerUsageSummaryActivity"; if you're using Apex or Nova launcher, you can easily create a shortcut to that via "Shortcuts -> Activities".
As for the Exif Data and image orientation: a closer look revealed how the gallery apps manage to figure whether an image is portrait or landscape. "width" and "height" of the image are swapped correspondingly, and most likely the image is auto-rotated if you take it "upside down". That sucks. At least 3rd party camera apps seem to do this correctly (indicating via Exif data instead of rotating the image itself), so it definitly is the camera app itself messing around, not the system.
The other two issues are still open, so I'd be thankful for any hints!

Now On Tap wont stay on

After upgrading to 6.0, i tried to turn on Now On Tap.
I know where the setting is- when i slide it to "on", I get the popup that says "Want any help with any screen? Turn on Now on Tap". When i click "get started" the slider goes back to off.
Anyone else seeing this?

I'm having the same issue with my Nexus 9. Can't find any solutions. I flashed the factory image twice now and wiped everything but the problem persists. :crying:
Getting it on Nexus 5
Working fine for me. Haven't done anything special. Just enabled it. Hit okay. Tried it out in Chrome. Went back to settings and still toggled on.

Okay, found it!
Apparently I can't use my Google App account ([email protected]) with Now on Tap. It works when I switched to my Google account ([email protected]). Hope that helps.
I'm having this problem too, and like you, I have a Google Apps account I'm using for my phone (I own the domain, and am the administrator). I'm going to have to look into this; either it may not be enabled for Google domains yet, or, it may have to be turned on, something I just found out with Google Maps (which was turned off in my Apps, so I couldn't access it until I turned it on).
I'll take a look, and if I find something, I'll post back.
---------- Post added at 10:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:17 PM ----------
Okay, here is what I found for Google Apps for Domain Users.
For Google Now On Tap to work, the Web History service must be turned on in your Google Apps Domain. However, finding this is a real pain. Here is what to do:
The problem is the "x" to remove the filter is all the way on the right (in chrome).
1. Log In to your Google Apps admin control panel
2. At the bottom of your dashboard click on "More Controls", then "Apps"
3. Click "Additional Google Services"
4. Remove the Filter "Top Featured Services" by clicking on the "x" on the upper right side.
5. Scroll to the bottom and find Web History
6. Click the "On" Button
a. Select for all users; or
b. If you have various organizational units select which organizational unit
I am told this may take a bit to trickle down to one's phone (sometimes up to 24 hours to all users in the domain). I have made the change myself, but have not been able to turn Now On Tap on yet. However, others have reported this as what does the trick.
If I had not found this through a Google community thread, I'd have no idea how to do it. It's certainly convoluted and the admin control panel doesn't make it easy to find, nor would I have had any idea that this was the fix. I'll update everyone with my results once I've had time to see if the change takes effect.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: If you do not have the following setting enabled on your phone, you cannot turn on Now On Tap:
Settings->Search & Now->Accounts & Privacy->Google Activity Controls->Web & App Activity must be set to ON.
