Hello guys,
I have some strange artifacts on my screen. First time I noticed this was on youtube. it shows some strange picture tearing on the left lower corner of the screen. First I thought it was some glitch in youtube app, but later i discovered similar glitch in some flash video. I noticed that it's most visible in Anomaly HD, where allmost entire lower left corner somehow flickers. no other games or apps seem to have this kind of problem, 720p HW accelerated video plays like a charm
Is this problem caused by apps, or is it faulty tegra 2? Can I try another display driver? Anyone else encountered this kind of glitch?
I uploaded video captured on my Galaxy W - it's most visible on Anomaly HD
Try a custom from. If it does not work, you might have a messed up GPU
I am currently using overcome 2.3.1, but i had this issue on stock as well...what's bugging me is the fact that no other app or game I've tried seems to be affected
for example shadowgun, zen pinbal thd, modern combat 3...all those games are working with no problem...might as well wait for official ICS update and see if it helps.
ok another funny thing: after installing latest AOKP ROM this happens when booting (same thing happens in CWM recovery after installing CWM suggested in thread)

here is the original video, seems i somehow messed up inserting the link

EDIT:
i'm starting to thing there's something really wrong with my tab...this iswhat i have after applying motley kernel (no screen shifting on previous kernel)
Could my problem be somehow kernel related?

EDIT2:
seems like i'm not the only one

I have this problem too. I see it in the lower left corner of the screen when scrolling through the video wall in the youtube app. If I turn the tab upside-down in landscape mode the flashing/tearing happens in the lower right corner of the screen. However, the problem does not seem to happen in the portrait mode at all.
I'm on stock unrooted rom.
Can you try flashing cm rom with latest recovery? I'm unable to flash latest build with my current recovery. If I flash recovery recomended in the cm tgread my screen starts to scroll from the bottom to the top. If I try to flash the rom with this new recovery same thing happens when booting...same goes with motley kernel as documented in videos above. Anyone else is having this problem? I can live with some screen tearing but that scrolling pisses me off...it makes newer cwm recovery unusable for me.

It's just as esqauw said...when i turn tablet upside down bug appears on different spot ( right lower corner screenwise, left upper corner tabletwise ). I believe tis has to He somehow related to software, because it appears elsewhere on the screen...might be completely wrong off course. Any oppinions?

someone has to know what to do about that sliding screen issue

I was about to link you my thread on this but I see you found it already. I have not looked into this for a few months.
For me the problem is inconsistent so it is difficult to test. Id think if it were a hardware issue then most if not all apps would be affected. Maybe the way the affected apps are writing to the screen is triggering it. Id also think more people would be reporting the problem.
Different roms don't seem to help which could point to hardware or some low level (lower than rom?) software cause. I watched your videos of the boot screens post kernal changes and I have not had that type of problem yet. But I have not rooted or tried other roms either. This may support the low level software cause.
Your information adds support to a software cause with the artifacts appearing in different parts of the screen when rotated. I think a hardware cause would mean a consistent location on the screen.
I cant find the threads now but Ive seen mention that Samsung's implementation of the screen and Tegra 2 on the 8.9 causes a performance lag in landscape that does not appear in portrait. The 10.1 does not have this problem. Maybe this is related to that. The lack of the artifacts in portrait mode would lend support to this.
I hope you find a fix but Ive resolved myself to living with it. Although, I should probably look at warranty options before it expires.
Good luck
What do the graphics look like on this free graphics benchmark app?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aurorasoftworks.quadrant.ui.standard&hl=en
I get 2281 in quadrant. lt runs smooth with no problems or glitching. but it runs in portrait mode which does not appear to have the bug.
Given that bug does not happen in portrait mode I'm leaning toward the problem being the performance lag issue I mentioned above.

Ok, so I have to clarified couple of things about lag and stuff.
1. I was played GTA 3 v1.3 with all the in-game setups at max and with frame limiter disabled. It has lagged as hell! Then, I switched the game to "Zoom to fill screen" and the game runs very very very smooth but the screen resolution became low. This is applied also to Asphalt 6 and other HD games.
2. The tablet runs smoothly in Portrait Mode. The stock launcher from 3.2 runs perfectly in portrait for me.
3. I tried to overclock up to 1.5 GHz and tried again to play GTA 3 with the option "Stretch to fill screen" and it LAGS! Tried with "Zoom to fill screen", no lag at all but screen resolution problem. Otherwise, is playable
I think all it's related to software. Hardware is quiet good. Maybe if we change the DPI the lag will dissapear, don't know
Jellybean seems to fix it
Well I tried the AOSP 10 beta 8 build and CM10 latest build and they both appear to have fixed the problem. AOSP seems a bit better performance wise so ill be sticking with that for the foreseeable future. I guess it was software after all.
I have the exact same issue with newly bought tab 8.9 on youtube app. and I didn't use alot of other apps but the apps I tried never had issues with the screen. The tab is all stock.
so, what we have concluded here is that it is a software issue or some hardware issue that should be taken care of by the warranty?!
Well it seems that it's software issue, because after flashing CM10 preview, those artifacts dissappeared.

That's great news. But that leads to another question
Do all gtabs 8.9 have the same issue using HC 3.2? So that we can say that we have a software issue only? Or is the issue related to some faulty SoCs that may show these artifacts using stock software?
I just want to make sure that it is a software issue only as I think I can make use of the warranty at the moment if it is a hardware issue
Thanks for sharing the tip

I hope I am not the only one with this problem, cause I suspect it must be a software/render problem with android mediaplayer/web browser. On all flash videos I get close to transparent greyish/blackish flickering, it is kind of subtle but very irritating, and it does not look very beautiful... I wonder is there any way to fix this problem ? I think I did read somewhere the problem is that screen is 24 bit...and android is 16 bit but yeah I certainly hope there is a solution, and that is not a hardware problem...
I can for instance tell you, the brightness lightness samsung video does not have this kind of flicker...
What are the sites your viewing?
for instance youtube,.
No flickering here. Youtube, engadget, embedded videos all play smoothly at 480p-1080p. Try updating your firmware to a newer.
This sounds like the problem I'm having. Flash videos play smoothly but the top half the screen has a very annoying flicker.
It happens in all flash videos, in all browsers. Other file types play without any problem though so it's very strange
Hey! My first post here on XDA! Just got my Note and I have the same problem as described above.
The strange thing is that the flicker on the right side (or top side if in horizontal mode), is really noticeable in lower resolutions up to 720p, but nonexistent in 1080p!?
For example, watch the first 15 sec on the Cars 2 trailer in 720 p. and see if you got it.
[I can't post a link as a new user apparently, but Google it.]
Do you guys think it is a software related issue that probaly can get fixed or should I return the phone?
Please give me some advice!
Same problem.. Does someone know what to do about it?
Hello all!
I have been a proud user of Galaxy Note user for a bit over a week now, and I am trying to test (in real app-world) if all the sensors are working correctly to be able to bring change it at the store if something doesn't work, since I'm eager to root my device and I probably won't be able to return it then.
Yesterday I installed the game AirPenguin, which uses accelerometer controls, and it seems all messed up. Basically what happens is that as soon as the game starts, the bird goes flying way left, even though I am holding the phone still. What I found out after experimenting a bit was that the game itself is locked to portrait mode, but the accelerometer works as if it was in landscape. Meaning I have to hold it in landscape, and when I then tilt it left, the bird flies left in game-screen, but left is down from my point of view.
I was wondering if anyone else has seen such problem in this game or any other app, and if it is just a game bug or if there could be a problem with the accelerometer.
The stock accelerometer calibration works without a problem - when I tilt the phone left, the ball goes right, and when I tilt it right, it goes left (I suppose that's how it's supposed to be).
Thank you all in advance!
ME TOO
I'm facing the same problem on my Galaxy Note, I wonder if that happens also on other android devices or it's a galaxy note issue only?
i dont have the app, but is auto-rotate (that thing in the notification bar) turned off or on? try changing that to see if it fixes it?

Nexus and HTC Flyer, too any solutions?
Same problem with my Galaxy Tab 7+ P6200. I have encountered so many games in the google playstore with this problem. Too bad, i hope the app developers fix this problem for our devices.
afair there was a free app for comprehensive hardware testing, it was called Z-Device test, if stones interested, and google does not hello, I may try to find the link or apk later

I'm noticing a graphical glitch in the lower left corner of the screen on occasion. It is most noticable and reproducible in the youtube app when slowly scrolling through the video wall. A right-triangular portion of the screen flashes or tears. It does not seem to happen in the bottom bar, only in the YouTube app area of the screen.
I've also noticed it happen when switching or loading apps. I can't say which ones as I have not made a list but definitely Opera, YouTube, zynga poker and dice media player as the are my most used apps.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
Using 8.9 wifi only version, unrooted stock. (Haven't taken that plunge yet. :S )
I also have this problem. Had it with stock firmware and the problem is still there with ICS rom. So it looks like a hardware problem to me. I wonder if all gt8.9s have this?
I am not entirely sure, but it seems to me that I have lost some precision with the S-Pen after I updated to ICS. When I am writing I have a feeling that the drawn line is slightly off the "pencil point" then before, maybe only for a fraction of a millimeter which is affecting the text, it seems much worse now.
When I am writing something it seems a bit more "unnatural" then before.
The only calibration I have found so far is the left-right handed set-up and it is set-up correctly for me.
Anyone else notice this?
I too have noticed this, Although I cant compare it to GB because i flashed ICS within minutes of getting the Note.
I have googled for the calibration methods but none of them work, They all relate to turning on / off the auto rotation and tapping the pen in 4 corners.
Could really do with a proper screen calibration tool
My drawing is pretty pathetic at the best of times, but with this inaccuracy im getting bullied on Draw Something
There is app on Google Play Store with which you can off set Spen position on the screen. It's called Touchscreen tune. It's not free to make changes permanent but you can try it to see if it works for you.
So nothing for unrooted devices?
Has the JB update fixed this issue for those who have updated their firmware?
No, it hasn't fixed the issue however there is a program in google play that fixes it (albeit you have to pay for the full version). It is called touchscreentune (galaxy note) - you can change the offset of the tip and also change things like the sensitivity if the screen. I can confirm that it works on most XXLSZ ROMS with Philz (haven't checked it on pure samsung JB).
Every couple of days I have a problem with the screen becoming VERY unresponsive. It seems to affect the whole screen and requires touching characters on the keyboard, web buttons, app icons, etc. multiple times before the touch is registered. The problem persists until I reboot the device.
I haven't rooted yet or otherwise modded it at all, but maybe I have a poorly optimized app running? Haven't tried to capture a logcat yet either (and frankly wouldn't know what I was looking at).
Has anyone else experienced something like this?
Thanks!
_john
Looks like mine is suffering something similar to the problems discussed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779652
I also have this issue. Was able to reproduce with multi touch tester apps. When I cross axis the touch points freak out. I think it's a grounding issue. If I touch the headphone jack or have headphones in the issue goes away. Called in a RMA request yesterday. Hope this issue isn't present in the next device.
