SIM Unlocked APN settings and Bing Services, battery - Samsung Focus S

After putting in APN settings given by network provider I was able to get internet data working on my phone (I had a working 4g data connection). Howevr bing services such as vision, voice, scout... would always say they could not connect to the network. Further the services would work fine when connected to wifi network.
Soltuion I found was simple but not obvious. The APN settings provided included a proxy server and a proxy port. I deleted that APN. Created a new one (Using Samsung Wireless Manager) With only entry for APN (my case sp.telus.com).
After this change I have bing services working. My battery life went from 6 hours to 30 hours. Also the phone charges very quickly now.

interesting, I wouldn't have thought that an APN setting could change the efficiency of the battery, unless the proxy is crap and its constantly having to send and receive data....
Cheeers!

Cannot connect to Slingbox on AT&T

This is the most appropriate location I could find to post this, as I have three HTC devices (8525, TyTN 2, and Advantage) so I thought I would start here.
Issue:
I can no longer connect to my Slingbox on my home network when using my MediaNet (wap.cingular) connection on the TyTN 2 or the Advantage.
Error Message: Cannot connect using these settings. But email and web work from the MediaNet settings, so I am fairly certain the configuration is correct.
Facts:
- The connection works over Wifi on either HTC device, so I know my Slingplayer Mobile settings (Finder ID, etc.) are correct.
- The connection works using a Verzion Motorola Q. My corporate VPN connection also does not work with AT&T, but does on the Q through Verzion.
Conclusion:
AT&T has (or did) make changes to the proxy used which prevents services running on certain ports from working correctly.
Question:
Is anyone else having problems connecting to their Slingbox? If you can connect, what settings are you using?
Additionally, could someone please explain the differences between the wap.cingular and isp.cingular settings? Do you have to use isp.cingular to get VPN and other advanced services to work? If so, what is the minimum data plan you must subscribe to with AT&T to be able to do so?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
I cant say why you are having issues. My Slingbox connection works fine (actually much better than fine) via my Kaiser on AT&T with MediaNet. It works better than it ever did with my 8525. I do notice that I do have 2 separate Connections, one for MEdiaNet and the other called "My ISP" which both point to the same wap.cingular APN. Not sure why I have 2, but everything works fine. The MediaNet one is "hidden" and I can't change it. The My ISP one is visible, but I don't want to delete it since everything seems to work fine. It just switches between them (albeit unnecessarily) to make things work when needed.
Furthermore, I am using wap.cingular exclusively. If you do connect to a VPN, you must use isp.cingular. The normal MediaMax, MediaNet and smartphone plans give you wap.cingular. The PDA plans give you isp.cingular. Blackberry plans may give you neither (they go to blackberry.net).
Thanks
Can I ask what port # you are using for your Slingbox? I am using 5001 for one of mine. Did you have to make a rule entry in your router or firewall? I am just trying to determine why suddenly I cannot connect. I am going to pop my SIM card back into my 8525 when I get home and check it again. The last time I tried it on the 8525 it worked. The trouble is, there aren't a lot of changes to make. it's pretty much wap.cingular and the password.
Thanks, and if you think of anything else, please let me know.
Rob
my slingbox works just fine on att. WHen i had the isp.cingular it did not. i had to change it to wap.cingular to get it to work.
Hmmm, don't know th eport off hand, but I want to say i'm justusing the default.
Did you upgrade to the new Slingbox firmware the past couple of days?
I did and could not connect. I called Slingmedia and they told me they had some issus with the new firmware and UpnP settngs in some routers.
I had to go into the Slingbox settings on the desktop PC and manually open the port in the router. If you call them they will take you step by sep
I had the same problem it took me 10 hrs to finally find the answer. It has nothing to do with your port your finder ID at all. like the a previous stated you need to use a different connection setting to use slingbox. Use or create the my isp connection. the only difference is one use proxy settings and one does not. to be honest i just deleted the media net profile and used my isp exclusively. the only problem is medianet keeps showing up in my connection settings. the medianet setting can also screw with push email retrieval
Thanks so much NJXBEAN! I could NOT get Slingplayer to connect until I made that change in the modem settings. It works great now!

Proxy was blocking me...
After experimenting with mine further, I was FINALLY able to connect by unchecking the "use proxy server" setting on my unlocked Kaiser. I wonder if the AT&T "Tilt" build of the OS will even allow this?
AT&T Tilt and Slingbox
Right out of the box, Slingplayer worked on my Tilt. I made no changes to the proxy settings.
I have the media net unlimited plan.
It could be a firewall issue. If the connection you have is listed as "Connects to the Internet" it'll block some ports. If you have Connects to Work, it'll open all ports.
I just just want to say that you guys are great! I had a problem with sling, researched on it here, and found the problem without asking..People, u gotta love it!!!!!!

P.S. i recored myself talking to an at&t rep you should listen to what he says

Found a Fix
It cannot connect to isp.cingular, you need to ADD wap.cingular apn to your network settings.

If you just make your default connection Media Net it's already going to be set for wap.cingular
isp.cingular is the default only if you have it set to use ATT ISP as your connection.
Wow, I want slingbox now. I didn't even think of it working on my Tilt....is the data transfer extreme????????

Tilt Proxy issue

I am having some issues with setting my proxy settings on my Tilt. The HTTP proxy is wiped out once they are set.
Here is what I am doing to create the problem
I go to Start ->Settings ->Connection Tab ->Connections ->Advance Tab ->Select Networks and change both settings in this menu to use "My Work Network" for both settings, and then set the proxy settings for "My Work Network" to use my corporate proxy, everything works fine until I enable a WLAN connection. After I enable the connection the proxy information disappears.
I guess I don't understand why the proxy settings disappear once a live WLAN connections is set.
Does anybody know how I can fix this.
I have tried running the no proxy cab which didn't help.
Thanks for any help
I am so frustrated I want to take this thing back to the store if I can't use it on my corporate network.
it probably does this since the proxy gets sent to you once you connect to a network, and the WiFi connection you are connecting to tells the Kaiser it needs no proxy... your corporate network should sent the proxy automatically, mine does (the wired one, not WiFi)
I called HTC support and they said this was a Mobile 6 bug. They said that they are going to work with MS to create a fix for this issue.
My thoughts are on this, is this going to affect a massive amount of user who have to connect through proxy on their corporate network.
This sucks cause I'm to cheap to pay for the data plan.
Holding my breath for a QFE from Microsoft. I sure not to soon though.
That isn't a WM6 bug. I have an ASUS device, which makes no problems with the proxy settings. It is probably a WM bug combined with the HTC specials.

Free wap question

I heard somewhere that ATT uses a special proxy server in order to charge you for data usage. And by changing that server to a free proxy server (kproxy, proxy ip?) you can get free unlimited data usage....
Is this possible or a bunch or crock?
No one ?
I used to work for the company for a number of years. Complete crock
Nooooooooooooooooooo...
complete crock, even if you turn the proxy off it still charges you for data... i dont run the proxy and still show over 800meg transfer a month
If I were ti funnel the interent over MEdia net, would that count as data?
yea that would still count as data if you gonna use the internet thorugh medianet
But my MMS goes through medianet and it doesnt charge me for that?
Anything and everything that uses GPRS, EDGE, UMTS or HSDPA is data and you will get charged for it one way or the other, whether it's SMS, MMS or raw data (i.e. PIE or checking email). Even if you have an unlimited SMS, MMS or data package and you aren't being charged separately for it, they are still logging it. Look at your phone bill and you will see it (I know AT&T logs every SMS, MMS and every byte of data).
The ONLY way to bypass that is to use WiFi, and that only works with data, not SMS and MMS.
So, in short, it's a crock.
But its not using any of those, its using 3G via the MEdia Net proxy
HSDPA IS 3G. You are using data on the AT&T network.
No matter how much you argue with me, it won't change the fact that unless you use WiFi, data is being transmitted on the AT&T network and MMS/SMS will not work over WiFi.
im not sure why this is so hard to understand so let me try to lay this out before locking this thread...
If your phone uses any sort of data over cellular no matter how its connected to the network (GSM, 3G, HSPA, Edge, NOT including wifi) its tracked, it does not matter what server its connected through (media net, MY ISP, PDA Connect, etc), even if your phone was set to use a different proxy then the data still has to go through att before hitting the other proxy... If it can be tracked it can be billed, and ATT tracks EVERYTHING, SMS, MMS, PTT, Video share, browsing, etc....

How to send/receive emails via wifi on tilt

ok first of all i did google this but didn't find anything specific
alright so under my "connections setting i have my "select automatic network" to MY ISP.....i thought that was enough to avoid data charges (since i only want to use wifi for internet browsing and emails...and i dont have a data plan).
So i was playing around with the email options and under the "server" settings i noticed the connection was set to Medianet....my heart came in my mouth since i've been going crazy with the e-mails thinking im connected to wifi I changed the connection to MY ISP and now i cant receive e-mails.....so right now im hoping i didn't get charged (somehow) or if i did.....what would be some good bs excuses to get it waived
so my query is..can i send/receive emails via wifi connection? If so, how do i set that up.....
Before i use to turn off "phone" and leave wifi on and i did receive emails with that setup.
so my 2nd qs is....does disabling phone disable medianet or mms capabilities ?
Disabling all Data services from isp
I'm right there with you. I do not want to get a data plan, as I only need internet every once and a while. I have enabled my wi-fi by doing this on my phone:
Start>Settings>Connections>Wi-Fi
then from there you can turn it on, find and join networks...
As to removing all access to your ISP, I am not sure. I keep trying but no matter what i do, every once and a while I notice the little "E" logo at the top symbolizing the EDGE network is being accessed. Which is not what I want. Anyone who can shed some light on disabling the data service from being accessed, it would be greatly appreciated.
hmm well I also do not use the 3G network. The best way I've found to do this is by using the Comm manager and going to the communications manager and disabling 3G and disabling Data Connection. Then if you keep wi-fi enabled it won't ever use the 3G network. If the ROM your using doesn't have a good comm manager then you can download one that has those controls because there are many on this website. Hope this helps,
-John
Modaco No Data is what I use
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
i have issues sending e-mails from the built in client, it always tells me i dont have access or some crap which makes no sense since i can sign into my account and check my e-mail from my phone so i normally have to go to the website for my e-mail to send an e-mail which is a pain

[Q] Proxy Settings - No mobile internet connection

Hi everybody!
I'm completely over-challenged with a problem that showed up a couple of weeks ago. After I went to a university in India to do some studies abroad my mobile Internet (2g, 3g, HSDPA) doesn't work anymore. To connect to the local wireless Internet at the University I had to enter a proxy setting. After I did that, the default browser asked for the username and the password which I entered as well. On wireless-lan everything worked just fine, but the mobile connection stop working only for the default browser and for downloads on market. Of course I cleared all browser data and reseted the proxy settings under network settings.
That means by now after I left India:
- Internet on wireless connection is working
- Internet on mobile connection is still not working on default browser and for downloads of market apps, but working for all other apps (g-maps, wapedia,..)
If someone has an idea to fix that, please tell me! I would really appreciate your help on this one!
Thx
Research the correct apn for your carrier.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Thank you for the quick answer!
I already checked the APN for my carrier, but everything is set right. Using the latest Cyanogenmod, there is already a APN-list with all the correct settings... mobile internet still won't work
I think there has to be something wrong deep inside of my Android-System...
