trying to decide between 8.9" and tab 2 7" - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

which one should i get? galaxy tab 8.9 is used for $200 or pay $270 for tab 2 7" at BestBuy?

I use to look in gsmarena, you can compare devices with lot of details, IMO you
have to think in size and in CPU/Chipset, Exynos 1.2G of 7+ is faster.

In this case you have to make your decision because of the size. I love my 8.9 because 7" is to small and 10" to big. Thats the reason why I have bought this tab. I dont know why no other manufacturer produce a tab in this size ... in my eyes 9" or better 8.5" is the best size for a tablet. I used the Ipad from my mom and after 30 minutes it was to heavy for me. I also used the 7" pad from a friend and its to small in my opinion. When i have to made a decision between these to (Ipad and 7"), i woukd choose the 7". But we all are lucky that samsung created these perfect 8.9

I've had a 10" tab and it was just too big. I had a 7" tab and I didn't use it much because it wasn't much bigger than my phone. That's why I went with the 8.9 and it's perfect for me. If this didn't exist, I'd probably stay with the 7" tabs.

It all depends on how you're going to use it: landscape vs portrait.
I bought the 8.9 because I tought a 10.1 would be too big, but after hours of continuous use in landscape, browsing and IM-ing, I started to feel that I needed and even lighter tablet. Until I figured out how easy it is to use it in portrait mode instead of landscape. Holding it is easier, scrolling is easier, typing is way easier (obviously) and now the weight issue is simply non-existent. Now I am even thinking about a 10.1 to be my next tablet, although the main reason would be the higher resolution (read: Transformer Infinity) that would help with browsing websites in portrait, which is really the only downside right now with my tab.
I don't know why everyone is avoiding portrait when it comes to big Android tablets, probably because they want to be different then all the iPad owners, but, really, you should try it, it's a whole new experience. I can't imagine myself using landscape again other than for watching movies, on a tablet. I would love it on a desktop PC too, if it were possible, since all the websites are built on columns and after a few scrolls you end up reading a bunch of text that is concentrated in the middle of the screen, on 50% of your monitor's area..

OP said Tab 2 7", different than the Tab 7 Plus. The Tab 2 is OMAP4 powered.
I have a Tab 8.9 and a Tab 2 7in, and there are things I like from both. Honestly, I'd prefer the Tab 8.9 but with a faster CPU and an sd card slot. Got to have an sd card slot in any future tablet I buy. Expandable storage is such a crucial feature, its mind boggling how some manufacturers can exclude it.

[Q] Is the 8.9 form factor popular?

I'm just curious as to how well the GT8.9 is selling. I find it very comfortable and would love them to continue the form factor in future iterations. Does any one have a link or just info off hand as to how well sales of the 8.9 vs the 10.1 is doing?
thanks
It isnt as popular as it should be. Most people prefer the larger 10.1 for a tablet. More restate to look at i guess. 8.9 is a more comfortable and managable size but that irrelevant

I recently read an article about tablet sizes for business use. The article concluded that some 13% prefers 8-9" sizes, some 15% prefers even larger size such as 12-13" and the big majority prefers approx 10". (Obviously influence by the success of the iPad). 7"or less was in almost all cases considered as too small for business use (as an owner of a 7" Flyer I tend to disagree).
Considering the fact that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is the best selling "small" tablet, I'd say more than 10% of the business market is interested in this tablet.
I think that it's not as popular as it should be; I doubt most people have access to an 8.9 tablet to try. Anecdotally based on comments most that pick one up seem to prefer it over the 10.1.
I dunno how popular it is, but I know it's what sold this tablet to me. I'd been using iPad for quite some time but it was the 8.9" size that convinced me to get this instead of upgrade my iPad. IMO 10" tablets are too big for reading and gaming, and 7" tablets are too small for web browsing and typing quickly, the 8.9 is perfectly in the middle and the way it's so thin and light make web browsing so perfectly easy.

7 inch Tablet vs 10.1 Tablet?

I already have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi but Nexus 7 brings a plethora of improvements and their is no hope or patience to another year of wait for possibly never to come official upgrade of 4.1.
In your opinion, why would you prefer a 7 inch tablet over a 10.1 inch tablet and what would you miss on 7 inch screen compared to a 10.1 screen?
My main motivation is to get a lighter tablet for reading. 10.1 inch tablet are too heavy to carry on one hand. I would like to use 7 inch tablet as I use 10.1 inch tablet for writing and wondering if loss of 3 inches of screen size will be direct proportional loss in writing productivity.
Thanks.

im having a hard time adjusting to the thought of having a 7 inch tablet.. I have a xoom. Part of me wants the new lighter tab but im afraid ill miss the extra screen real estate.
I think im gonna just go for the nexus 7 and deal with it. I had the same issue going from devices with sd to devices without SD...
I have the Acer A100 7 incher and love it, and now have the Nexus 7 on preorder. I love the 7 inch tabs. Super portable, can fit in your pocket. I had the Transformer but figured that if I might as well take my netbook or get an ultrabook if I wanted to lug something that size around. With the 7 inch tabs you do end up zooming in more on content but to me that's not a big deal.

Major +1 - thin and light, can go in your pocket etc - same res as 90% of other tablets at 10" size, so you arent loosing on screen space, just physical size...
Also, 7" tab is MUCH better to game on, as its easily held in two hands with coverage for almost all the screen without stretching!

The major problem I have faced with a 10.1 tablet is it's too big to hold on with a hand and read. PDFs should look better on 7 inch tablet as most papers are 8 inches wide.
Hopefully, it will not matter when it comes to writing because apps can always adjust to screen size and I will be using a Bluetooth keyboard.
I personally can't justify a 7" tablet. with our almost 5 inch phones, there is just not enough screen real estate to make that much of a difference. 8.9 inch or bigger FTW

I tried the 7" tablet with a Nook Color running CM7 and it was alright. I felt content with it... until I got an HP Touchpad in that firesale. The bigger screen ruined 7" tablets for me. I dont mind zooming, but I do mind scrolling and with a smaller tablet, you have to do a lot more scrolling. It gets in the way of browsing, reading emails or ebooks, writing or editing documents, etc.
As good as the Nexus looks, I'm passing it up for a TF700 solely due to the screen size. But for those who it works for, I hope you enjoy it.
Well you won't be scrolling because the tablet has the resolution of the current 10inch tablets (new tf infinity and Acer aside)

I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, and have ordered a Nexus 7. I also have the Galaxy Nexus, so I have experience with all of the screen sizes brought up here. To be honest, if you are thinking about purchasing a 7in tablet for extra portability/readability, it's a good move. I use my 10.1 for gaming and videos when lying around the house, in the office, or while on a plane. I use the 7in for when I want to read a book or will be on the move quite a bit but still want to game or read on a larger screen than my phone. Sometimes 4.65inches is not enough and 10.1 is just too much. If you're willing to spend the money, I say go for it.

DPI also factors into it. With two displays of the same resolution but different DPIs, the higher DPI will be more detailed but not display as much content as the lower DPI one. In that regard, you are scrolling more. I thought the same as you did when I got my touchpad (1024x600 vs 1024x768, not really enough room to notice extra scrollability on resolution alone).
I'd put my opinion, but that's like comparing apples and oranges. Both screen sizes have their pros and cons.

I have an A200 and KF on my desk right now. When I get up to go read my twitter feed in the family room...I will pick up the KF 100%. One hand vs. two.
IMO, 4.5" (my gnex) is too small to read books on, and 9" (my touchpad running CM9) is too big to read while trying to relax. I think 7" is the sweet spot. The stickler is the fact that larger tablets have to be held with two hands most of the time.
Plus the battery life of the Nexus 7 is just godly. 300 hours on standby? Think about that, almost two weeks without a charge. I don't think even jesus could make anything that good.
I'm really only getting it to game on. 7" is the perfect size for most touchscreen games, and the fact that it will get all the awesome tegra zone games is a major plus. I seriously can't wait to play the tegra 3 optimized version of Shadowgun on this thing. I just hope that someone comes out with a mod to hide that stupid, stupid status bar so I can play my games in true full screen. I really think that the persistent on screen status bar was the single worst decision Google made with android and was the main reason why I returned my galaxy nexus. So glad HTC went with capacitive buttons on the One X.

Are you talking about the notification bar? Most games I've played hide it. Any app has the capability of doing so while it is running, it just depends on whether or not the developer has chosen to do so.
Also capacitive buttons have been common on pretty much all android phones made within the last two years, I think the last phone I had with physical buttons was the HTC Hero, but I got the HTC Evo shortly afterwards (now two years old) which has capacitive buttons, and it wasn't the first phone to do so.
Unless you're talking about the soft buttons? That was originally a honeycomb feature (pretty old) that got carried over to ICS. I don't own an HTC One X, but I'm pretty sure that it uses fixed buttons rather than soft buttons.

While the history lesson is apreciated, I am already well aware of all that stuff, I've been with Android for 3 years now. I am only refering to the persistant status bar/ task bar/ navigation bar, whatever you want to call it. It was a horrible idea on Googles part.

The Next 8.9 tablet ?

Like many others on this forum, I am deeply enamoured to the 8.9 form factor. For me it's the sweet spot between having enough screen space for lounging at home without being too bulky or heavy to throw into my messenger with other stuff and carry around. When LG first announced their first tablet would be 8.9 based on customer research, I knew I'd be drawn to it, having found the original iPad too bulky. But by the time it came state sides as t mobile spring board it was out of spec and unwieldy. So when Samsung announced the galaxy tab 8.9 with current specs and lighter and thinner than ipad2 dimensions, I knew I was going to get it. After playing around with the 10.1 while waiting for the 8.9, then getting the 8.9 soon after it's release, there was no turning back!
Now, I plan to stick with this 8.9 for at least through the year, but admittedly in a world where quad cores and 1080nd screens are coming out, I've been keenly waiting to see if a current successor to the 8.9 would be announced, either by Sammy or another vendor, and I have become anxious that this form factor might die out. I secretly hope that there will be a galaxy note 8.9 in addition to the galaxy note 10.1 set for Q3, but I'm not seeing anything.
Then today I read this news on the new kindle fire rumors, and lo and behold, a 8.9 size with 1080hd screen is there!
http://m.cnet.com/news/at-least-three-kindle-fire-2-tablets-one-with-4g-on-the-way/57467294
This kind of torments my heart. I'm glad to see a manufacturer come up with these specs and hope it prods others too. But I'm not really glad it's a Amazon kindle. I tried the kindle fire for about a month before selling it, and I was quite disappointed at the sluggishness, box like design, and I'm not sure I trust Amazon to build a quality tablet anymore. And I fear Amazon will be more restrictive in terms of root-and port-ability, not to mention lack even more developer support.
But then if this is the only 8.9 tablet on the market at the end of the year and foreseeable future, I might feel compelled. What are your thoughts on the next 8.9 tablet for you?

if we can hack it and use a real version of Android then i can NOT wait for an 8.9 update.
I hate the Amazon interface, i personally really prefer Google's Android and the variety of choice in Google Play.

Yeah, if the hardware is good enough(quad core and 1080p), and it is hackable, then I guess I'll consider the kindle too.
Though Amazon app store had a few good deals, I have to say, I much prefer the Google play too (as much as I dislike that name), if only to avoid update lags.
I so do wish we'll have more 8.9 inch options later this year!

I'm surprised the 8.9 size isn't more popular to be honest. I've always though that the iPad was a hell of a cumbersome thing, even the 2nd and 3rd generation versions, but that the Kindle Fire and other 7" devices tend to be almost like slightly overgrown smartphones, too small for web browsing and barely an investment in themselves unless you're a heavy eBook reader. 8.9 got it bang on but doesn't seem to have kicked off, to the point that Sammy haven't done an 8.9 Tab2.
Do remember though that the Tab2 range is almost the same product manufactured differently to get the price down (and redesigned to avoid further law suits from Apple) so other than waiting for OS updates there's not much of a disadvantage owning a Galaxy Tab 8.9.
But yeah, the 8.9 is the Goldie-Locks tablet, it's not too big, not too small, just right!
Personally, if we can get a Jelly Bean port after the official ICS release then I'm set.
I don't play intensive games so have no need for quad core anything. I'll be sticking with my GT8.9 for some time I think.
I do enjoy my 8.9 as well, but I think Samsung and other manufactures put out a bunch of different sizes the last couple years to feel out the market. Its looking like the 10inch and 7inch are prolly gonna become the normal going forward with most manufacturers if I were to guess.

Which is really tragic, considering he majority of consumers never had much of a chance to try out a 8.9. If anything, I hope a kindle fire does come out in 8.9, if only, so that it peaks consumer and manufacturer interest in the 8.9 form factor!

Well, not that I'd wish to restrict the choice of others, but if you think about it, the tab 8.9 if the same height as the iPad, which speaks to it's optimal size, yet it's lighter and with 16:10 dimensions good for watching movies too ... so I do wish and think companies should show more love for 8.9s.

8.9 is the right size but too many people dont know it :-(
I have tried the Ipad, the original thrive and galaxy, a trans prime, the fire and the Acer 7 inch, and my beloved touchpad and the galaxy tab 8.9 is just the perfect size and the screen is much prettier than ips displays. I love it. But the tegra 2 is just not enough. My poor tab just can't handle HD vids. So sadly my touchpad gets more use than my galaxy. Also I wish it had expandable memory. Come on Sammy why didn't you give this beauty an SD card slot? So while I agree that the 8.9 is just the right size it is due for an upgrade. Sadly it doesn't look as though one will be here soon enough. So for me its just waiting for someone to make a tab with a prettier screen and expandable memory. Unfortunaty for me none of the new tabs have a good screen. Ips displays have washed out colors when you compare them to an Ipad or a Samsung tablet. As for the 8.9 fire 2 it could be a decent machine. I put an aokp ics rom on my friends kindle and its a decent tablet now. Just a bit too small for me. Only time will tell but here's to my prayers for Sammy to make an 8.9 2 with a real processor and a SD card slot! That would be the best.
I've owned: Transformer w/dock., Iconia A500, Toshiba Thrive, Streak 7, Evo View, 8" china pad, Evo View, Archos 80 G9 and of course the 8.9. Left in the stable are the
Evo View: I'm on sprint so having the data plan is nice, but it sits on my nightstand on wifi and used once in a blue moon. Will probably sell it soon while it still has some value. 7" is just too small and not enough of a size difference over my 4" phone. I like the stylus, but haven't used it as much as I thought I would. The data plan is nice because some wifi at the hospitals I go to have a sign in, and for some odd reason webmail doesn't work while on it. Really odd. It was the same on the touchpad. Yet the Apple crowd had no issues. Haven't figured that one out.
Archos 80 G9: I paid $125 via Staples last month for it. Like the 4:3 8" size. Dual core OMAP, connectivity out the wazoo (full size usb, hdmi, microSD and microUSB), and I've been on official ICS since day one. The screen isn't bad. It has a little more heft and big side bezels, but it's comfy and more comfy to hold than any 10.1". Plus it has the built in kickstand. Another reason to ditch the Evo View. I have a dock for it, and I wouldn't need the dock to keep it upright on the nightstand. still not my ideal screen size as HD content is no better than a 7" tablet, or slightly less even. Not sure on that math.
And the 8.9: Tegra 2 is fine for me. No hi profile blu ray rips for me. I have the usb dongle for a card reader. Great screen even if it is PLS. The size and weight is the perfect trade off for carrying between the 10" and 7" while still having enough real estate to make media viewing and reading enjoyable. Best screen size out there if you ask me.
That being said, I want a 9 or 4:3. I think that's the best of both worlds. HD would still be a bit larger than a 7" tablet and everything else would be a nice 4:3 9" . And I want built in connectivity. microSD and HDMI are key. So until that comes, I have no need to buy another tablet unless the 8.9 and Archos become obsolete.
Yeah, I getcha... An 8.9 with Tegra 3 would be nice. For me, well, HD Movies on this little screen, personally I wouldn't notice/appreciate the difference, I watch some SD stuff and stream Netflix on there when I can't use my TV and it looks sharp as anything to be honest, heh... Tegra 3 would be nice for gaming though.
I know what you mean, I've been hoping to hear some rumors of a Galaxy Note 8.9 as well. Honestly the 10-inch form factor feels too big, and the 7-inch too small. The 8.9 felt just felt perfect and the S-Pen is now a big deal for me on a tablet. Stick in some internals like whats in the Galaxy SIII (quad-core, 2 GB ram, NFC/Android Beam, Jelly Bean, and 2MP FFC/5MP Rear Camera). Bring back the IR blaster from the original Tab 8.9, and a 1080p screen (to keep in competition with the Retina display). Then all they'd have to do is keep it thin and light (not plastic-like) and I'd probably camp out for that one, even if it costs $599

Is tab s2 8.0 worth the buy if I already have a note 5?

I'm thinking about the s2 8.0 since it's on sale at Best Buy and a couple other places but I currently have a Note 5 and is it really worth spending the money on a tablet with only an 8 inch screen when I got the Note which has a fairly large screen already.
Depends on your budget, but a 5.7" widescreen display is an entirely different animal from an 8.0" 4:3 aspect ratio... much more text fits on a 4:3 8.0" display the page for web browsing, flipboard, reading textbooks, etc.
If youve never had a tablet, showroom it at best buy or something, you'll see.
While in some ways I miss the phone shape of my nexus 7, easier for typing, but the ipad-mini shaped tab S2 8.0 is very cool, i dont regret the $350 I spent on it.
I bought a 6S Plus phablet for my wife and its a cool display size but just not the same as an ipad mini or Tab S2 8.0. Different form factor entirely, best suited to different tasks.

If I'm going to be using it for reading articles and books for school wouldn't a 9.7 inch one be better than an 8?
I personally think the 9.7 inch one is too big for extended usage (reading for example). I use my 8 inch one for reading text books in bed and it's awesome. Can't imagine doing the same with the bigger one but that's just me.
I own a 5.5 inch phone and when my previous tablet broke (iPad mini) I had to use my phone a lot m9re. Hated the whole experience compared to using a tablet.

For me 9.7 is perfect for reading (main use) specially PDF books and comics. Of course my eyes are not what they used to be. . I like the bigger screen format when administering remotely my servers through RDS. Paired with the keyboard case and a Bluetooth mouse is perfect for me. I just give to my wife my new, now old for me, Asus Zenpad 8 inch 64gb tablet, and I can feel the difference between an 8 inch screen vs a 9.7 inch.
my 2 cents... i have a note5 and had the same reservations as the OP. i'm fortunate that budget was not a concern so, i purchased an unlocked, Tab S2 8.0 LTE/Wifi version (international) and i'm glad i did. 3 main reasons i'm pleased with the device: (a) perfect size my work activities (mgmt consultant where i read/reply to a butt-load of emails every day), (b) great for reading personal and work stuff during my weekly travels to client sites and (c) the international version has a "real" phone. full LTE capabilities using AT&T in the US. i've been doing well my Note5 and will continue to rely on it for work as well. Nexus 7 was my first tablet and this is my second and a keeper.

If I'm going to be using it for reading articles and books for school wouldn't a 9.7 inch one be better than an 8?

8" is okay for me for reading textbook PDF's, and the other activities I use it for like browsing flipboard.
Sure, 9.7" you would have slightly bigger text, but it's slightly bulkier.
I don't think you can go wrong with either though, I'm not aware of any better android tablets currently.
I bought the 8 today absolutely love it beautiful screen nice size text love it

A few basic Q's before purchasing S2

Considering either the 8" or 9.7" through Costco priced at $239 and $429 respectively. I am not a newbie to rooting have two Galaxy S4 both rooted), but don't know what is best for this out of the box. I want to remove bloat (and all the other reasons for rooting).
Would also like feedback on 9.7" vs 8" as I may have to retire an old laptop soon and don;t want to replace it with another laptop. I'm almost 60 so maybe a bigger screen makes more sense?
Visually, I see what you mean regarding the screen size.
However for me, what makes the 8" version really special is the weight, (or should I say lack of it.) My wrist never gets tired.
It all depends how you are going to use your tablet.

I would recommend the bigger screen. I picked up the 8" on sale and returning it. I'm coming from a galaxy tab s 10.5 and cant get used to the size. The less weight is nice but I usually place the tablet on a surface anyways. Waiting for the s2 9.7 to go on sale or s3 to be released, which ever comes first.

I have both. Most of the time, the 8" gets left at home while the 9.7" goes with me everywhere. The exception being when I'm expecting to be "standing in line" for some time. And I'm 78.
I like the 8 in. model, but I like to hold the tab quite a bit. Browsing and typing in landscape mode feels just perfect at this size. But as mentiomed before, if you will use it on a table with a stand, then maybe 9.7 could be better.
I agree with most of the responses here; Its all about how you are going to use the tab.
In the hand, the 8" may be the best due to weight.
Out of the hand, go for the 9.7"
