Yup if you look in the development section there are two tutorials on how to root. although some version aren't root able so have a look.

Just to make things a bit clearer, because this thread comes up as the first result on google searching "Stock ICS root Sensation XL"
- DOomLords v4, and v2 do not work. Gingerbread only.
- Shingers method from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625841 does not appear to work for me, get a black screen when booting to recovery after flash, adb works, minimal system, no way to flash anything from /sdcard/.
I'm sure it'll be possible eventually, but I've given up for tonight

The OTA will fail if your rooted.

Relock bootloader (fastboot oem lock) then flash a stock RUU. Now you can upgrade to ICS

My phone rooted in 2.3.4 and bootloader locked but update ota ics without any problem after ics update installed superuser but it not give root access

Your phone unlocked bootloader and rooted ? If it's not rooted and use locked bootloader direclty update ics on settings>about phone> software updates

Flash newest RUU for your region.
If you having stock go to settings>about phone> software updates

Have a look at the forums.androidcentral.com website and you will find all the instructions there with screenshots. I would add the exact page here but I was not allowed as this is my 1st post.

I've tried,failed.it shows assert failed.
I changed the update script,it still assert failed.
maybe CWM 5.0.2.8 doesn't support this kind of assert and apply_patch?

yes it is posible , I relocked the bootloader , installed the stock ROM , and update to android 4 over the air , now I have the official android 4on my phone .

no intention to steal the thread.. but to save the hasle for u guys.. i've already released the complete flashable ROM in my XL 3.6 thread..

Isn't yours for the Asia ruu. The benifits of this one is that in theory itll work a bit better for people in Europe

Only thing that would really benefit EU people is the radio i think he has a new rom based on WWE release though

earlier release was asia based but since my device is also from EU so updated it today & took the dump so v1.3 is based on EU release

You need S-off to flash radio so for most users it's pretty useless

Don't forget the apps with the Rom will be slightly different. They'll be more specific to Europe

Connect to pc.
Put phone in to fastboot mode.
Power + vol down.
Go to android sdk folder.
Open cmd.
Write.
Fastboot oem lock
Enter.

You can extract it from RUU. But that like AndroHero say you need s-off to flash it.

That's weird, shouldn't need to open it though. Should be .exe file extension.
To 'flash' just plug your phone in and into fastboot mode. Then on your PC just duoble (or single) click the RUU.exe file should work. If it doesn't open then right click and run as admin

If your device is s off you should be able to go back to GB ruu. Just go to htcruu.com and find a ruu for Runnymede, it should be named something with Europe and then take the one with smallest number

There are several ways. But why back to stock GB ROM?
1.
Unlock boot loader, flash recovery and then flash a custom GB ROM
2.
Still unlock and flash and root and then s off and then run the ruu file you like.
All can be done with my tool easy. It will just not flash ROM for you. Also look in the thread for info.
If you want custom ROM then the safest way I know is after you have rooted your device and makes it s off , download the Chinese ROM and rcmix ROM I have linked to in my thread.
When you have flashed Chinese ROM, let it boot up and pick English, go to developer menu and enable debbuging for USB and reboot to recovery, also done easy with my tool, and flash rcmix ROM and do the same. When you have flashed both and are in recovery, flash any ROM for sensation XML , but remember to do it as written in the thread where ROM is downloaded.

Check your cid number. And post it so we can see what version you will need. You can do it in my tool.

Goto footballs thread & download the exe file.. if u have downloaded the zip from my thread then it needs to be flashed from recovery.. for that u need a unlocked bootloader
