Download the OTA package here
Rename it to update.zip, and place it on the root of your internal storage
Shut down your phone, and reboot into the bootloader by holding volume up and powering back on
Choose "recovery" from the list, and select it with the power button
When you see the red triangle press volume up and choose to update

IF YOU ARE ON CWM:
Just got an Android 2.3.1 update for Nexus S. It's on ROM manager if you want it. Make sure you flash recovery 3.0.
Also, for this to work you must be on Stock Recovery. This will not flash properly if you are using clockwork recovery

Correct. Koush is currently looking at fixing this for CWM.
Can we try to update and flash the zip using adb?
This was just tweeted:

edit nevermind got update
I just got prompted OTA for this update. Anyone know it I was to accept it, would I have any problems since I changed my recovery to ClockWork recovery?
I know it's been said it's on rom manager now, I am just curious if there would be any potential problems of accepting OTA updates with the stock recovery gone.
I have cwm recovery flashed and looked in Rom manager but is getting that "the rom you are using does not support ota updates etc" How did you manage to get Rom manager to update it to GRH78??
ive tried every way listed on xda but still get a "error 7" when trying to flash the update. i am using stock rom with clockwork 3.0. anyone having the same issue or any way to fix it?
usb disabled?
Got the message from Google to update. So I let it do its thing, said unable to update zip and now seems my usb connection is broken. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm on NS despite my sig Also on CWR 3.0 unlocked
are we supposed to be able to install this 2.3.1 update that we download from rom manager?

Well there is very little info in OP
and could be worded little better to avoid confusion
You have to put on Wifi and go to download ROM for some reason if you on on mobile network it wont show the update in rom manager
Dont bother it wont. From what i gathered we have to wait for modified version
Download the zip, choose to open with rom manager and it will flash fine with cw recovery 3.0.0.

Got great news! I got it to work! All I did was put the .zip file on the root of my sd and used Rom manager to "download rom" chose the .zip file and voila!! It installed everything fine. I am officially on GRH78. Hope that helps people out!
is this with the paid version or non-paid?
the CWM update will work of you have not used Koush's rooboot.img and are running a the rooted boot.img.
He said he will release a version later tonight that should work with rootbootimg installed as well.
glad im on stock recovery + root.
Ok so I have successfully rooted my phone after updating to Gingerbread. However, I had a few issues and had to read through a bunch of different posts to get there. So I'm bored and decided to consolidate everything into one.
If anyone has any other issues or fixes post them here and I will update the OP.
Credit goes to mtmichaelson and all those who helped get this working
http://androidinvasion.us/forum/index.php/topic,77.0.html
Here it is:
1. ROOT PROCESS
A. Get back to Stock:
-download the stock Zv4 ROM zip from here and put it on your external SD card- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326893
-Back up all your apps in titanium (important: USER apps only, no data or system apps)
NOTE: It has been reported that restoring apps and data in titanium may cause some issues coming from Froyo to Gingerbread. I backed up my user apps only for easy re-install and NO data or system apps. It worked without a problem.
-MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 4G ENABLED
-boot into recovery (CWM)
-backup?
-factory reset
-select "install ZIP from SD card" in CWM, and install the stock ZIP from the link
-re-bootyour phone (you will have to re-activate it as well)
-install revo toolkit from here if it was wiped with the system reset - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144951
-press "install recovery" and then !!!Revo Stock!!! to go back to stock recovery and wait for it to complete
B. Update to Zv6 then Zv7 (Gingerbread)
-manually search for the update and install it (this will install the v6 update)
-once that installs, manually search again to install the gingerbread update
NOTE: Some people still can't get gingerbread. Verizon has not finished rolling the update out to everyone yet.
Now here is where it gets a little dicey...
C. Rooting Your Gingerbread Phone
-pick up the rooting package from mtmichaelson here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326509
-follow the instructions he has on that page to obtain root
-Two issues arose for me from this point on.
2. ISSUES
A. Drivers Issue
-The first issue was that some people, including myself, couldn't download the esteem drivers.
-Some people were able to get the drivers from this page to work - http://androidnerds.net/2011/10/08/lg-esteem-oneclickroot-now-ready/.
-I was not able to get my computer to recognize my phone using the above drivers either. I would run the root command from the downloaded package and it would get stuck at "running daemon something something".
-What I did was manually uninstall the LG drivers from my computer and deleted everything "LG related"
-Then I got the drivers from the LG website at this link - http://www.lgforum.com/resources
-Scroll down to the Verizon section and download the "LG_VZW_UNITED..." drivers.
-Your phone should be recognized using the drivers from one of these links.
B. Superuser/Root access Issue - NOTE: this should be fixed now with mtmichaelson's newest root method found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326509
-The second issue that came up was that the previous superuser app I had installed stayed on my phone after the updates, even though I lost root.
-The root command from the LG Esteem page would think I had root, but I actually didn't get root access.
-Apparently this issue came up on the Esteem previously and someone wrote a fix for it here - http://androidforums.com/esteem-all...-w-superuser-3-0-6-binary-3-0-3-download.html. It will uninstall the old superuser and install the new version.
3. INSTALL CWM RECOVERY
-mtmichaelson's new rooting package should automatically install CWM recovery on your phone now.
Old method:
-To get CWM back on your phone it's the same process as before the update. Get the Revo Toolkit from thecubed here and follow the instructions - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144951
-There is sometimes an issue where the recovery does not install correctly and gives a fatal error. If this happened, make sure you have version 1.17.1 of busybox installed at system/bin. This worked for me and I got it installed correctly.
...And you should have root after trying a combination of the above. Hope this helped.
-If you have READ through this and still have any issues you can get more personalized help on the IRC channel here.
-Again I did not help with any of this, I'm just consolidating info. If you want to thank someone, thank mtmichaelson and everyone else who helped figure all this out.
-I will keep updating this as new issues arise.
Thank you for compiling this information, it is a useful reference for people to have. I know that the drivers issue took me quite a while to work out even though it is pretty simple. Hopefully this helps others to get rooted with much less trouble.
Quick question using that stock ROM will it completely unroot me?
Also a bit confused with me running revolt does that mess up me just flashing that and it has the stock boot image.

You need to use Revo toolkit to get cwm off and the stock recovery back on. from there it will run fine. Then you just have to reroot using MT's modified rooting .bat file

It depends on you connection speed. If it's 3g a while. I recommend doing it on 4g or wireless. You also need busybox installed in the right location. Install the version 1.17.1 in system/bin. The newer versions of busybox may work now but they previously did not.

It looks like it's a common problem. I haven't installed the ROM yet but mt's new gingervolt rom is supposed to make CWM stick - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326542
Ok so I'm a complete and utter noob when it comes to CWM etc. Never had an android device before this one, never flashed a ROM.
I've got a pretty good grasp of whats going to be happening here, but I'm a little skiddish.
I'm on stock GB with root, at the point where i'm supposed to install CWM with the RevoToolkit. In the RevoToolkit instructions, thecubed says "If no version is listed, STOP and post here.". Well, no version is listed, presumable because i'm on a GB stock recovery. Do I stop here, or do I proceed with installing clockwork recovery?
Specifically, RevoToolkit reports "Version Not Found".
Advice?

Awesome, thank you for the quick reply. Another stupid question that i'm sure is answered somewhere on here, but what exactly will I lose when flashing a ROM, and what will I be able to restore back with a backup?
Im trying to do an ics update on my rogers captivate... I have the files i need to get it done but i just cant get it into the rom recovery mode. I know a little about this stuff but not a whole lot (learning as i go along!). I have Recovery 3e on it right now and by the sounds of it, this is not going to work to get it into rom recovery mode... so i downloaded the rom explorer and got a file that was supposed to replace 3e with 2e or something of that matter so i can get it in the right recovery mode to upload ics onto my phone. I moved the file to system/bin and renamed the old recovery file recovery.bak i than moved the other recovery file to the same place and changed the permissions! i rebooted my phone and still nothing! Any help would be greatly apreciatted... and dumb it down a bit so i can understand!

Simple way: Download the Heimdall one click in my signature. Backup the stuff on your phone. Go into download mode. Run the one-click. Install the drivers that come with it (it will tell you how). Click the big "flash" button. You will have CWM when it's done, and can flash from there.
^Or you could just flash a kernel with CWM build into it.
The ideal platform for flashing an ICS Rom has to be CWM + Root + Stock GB ROM ( kk4 leak ).
If you got some patience, do it in order.
1. Root your phone.
2. Install CWM recovery.
3. Optional :Flash any GB Rom ( Preferably any one of those captivate leaked roms) using CWM.
4. Download ICS ROM (teamhacksung seems to be stable) and Flash TWICE through CWM
Enjoy

so then you know that it doesnt matter if you have root or not when you are in CWM, since you arent in an OS....?
therefore, ROOTING is not necessary to flash a new rom..
I also am on rogers and what I did was to use an heimdall 1-click package that flashed CWM for me then I used CWM to flash an ICS build.

Did You get this resolved?
If yes, what are the files required, I am new to the android rooting arena
Let me try to explain my situation...
I was on 5.5.893 with root and Bootstrap recovery installed. Rom manager was also installed later and used that to flasha newer CW recovery. Everything was working. I could make backups of my rom when needed (stock ROM).
Then the .902 OTA came out and I could not flash it. At some point I had modified the framework_res.apk so no OTA would flash.
So.. I used RSDLite to flash everything back to stock 5.5.893. Then rooted. Then installed bootstrap (the free one.. not from the market, but from koush's site). The pressed reboot recovery. I was stuck at the Motorola logo... bootlooping! yay..
So.. since I didnt want to mess with troubleshooting it too much, I used RSDLite again to install 5.5.893. Then rooted/forever root again. Then flashed the official OTA that I saved off my phone through stock recovery.
I'm now on the official .902 with root.Back on the upgrade path!
My question is... what do I need to do to get CW recovery back on this thing? I really don't want to have to FXZ this thing again. Also.. when I use RSDLite to flash the phone, does that completely remove any trace of bootstrap or any custom recovery? Or is that part of the phone left alone during a flash? Does that even make sense?
Ultimately, I want to get safestrap installed so I can try out the ICS roms out there since they have everything working now!
Nobody? I know I went into some detail that I probably didnt have to, but I thought the question was simple enough.
Download safe strap apk it is in my guide the link since your rooted already open app select install or whatever once your done reboot etc... its all in my guide just do everything past the motofail root method....

So, i have a bionic on .902, rooted, and running safestrap. when i try to install the OTA update to .905 the phone will reboot and attempt to install, but will fail during the install process, just for fun i did a wipe data/factory restore and attempted to apply the update again but the same problem persists. i have read that you can fully revert back to stock, but i cannot find any sort of guide to help me along.
Does anyone know of a giude that explains how to do such a thing?
Also is there a good ics rom out there that has both cameras functioning properly?

The best method to go back to complete stock .902 would be to FXZ. This process involves a computer running Windows and the directions can be kind of involved, but here you go(please follow in order):
BACKUP ALL DATA FROM INTERNAL STORAGE TO SD CARD BEFORE YOU START!
On your computer:
1. Download and install the Motorola Drivers from here: http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-...tware_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
2. Download and install RSD Lite from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=784077&d=1321414457
3. Download .902 FXZ file from here ( DO NOT Unzip it): https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B02aWSmWZBAkanh4M2plbldSY0tSRk43V0s3Ykl1UQ/edit?pli=1
OK, after you have finished that:
4. Turn your Bionic off
5. Hold down vol up and vol down buttons
6. While holding down vol buttons, hold down power button
7. You should see a black and while menu come up, use the vol down key to highlight AP Fastboot and use vol up key to select it
8. You should be in AP Fastboot Flash Mode
9. Now plug in your Bionic to a USB port on the BACK of your computer
10. Wait for Windows to find and install drivers for your phone
11. Launch RSD Lite, you should see your phone listed, select it
12, Towards the top you should see a text bar and a '...' button, click it and select your .902 FXZ file.
13. It will ask you if you want to start flashing click "Uncompress and start flashing"
14. Give it a good ten minutes to finish, once the phone has rebooted and you see the setup screen on your phone, you are good to go!
15. Don't install anything or root your phone
16. Now go into Settings and check for update and install .905 as you normally would
17. Now you can install all of your apps and data and root using the motofail method
And as far as ICS ROMS, all ICS ROMS that I know of are fully functional (camera, video, hw acceleration, etc.) . Since we now have ICS leaks that are flashable, you can flash one of those and then flash CM9 and the like, or just stay with the ICS leak. I personally recommend the AXIOMCS ROM for the Bionic. If you want to know have to flash the ICS Leaks and ICS ROMS, just let me know!
It's possible to FXZ direct to 5.9.905 now. The files finally leaked.
