[SOLVED][Q] How to stay safe in stock ICS...? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Friends,
I was on stock GB unrooted. Updated my device using OTA. After update I have performed factory reset /data wipe by recovery once and by settings menu too with erase everything option.
After that rooted my device using Dr. Ketan's method.
Every thing is running fine.
My question is
1. Because I have performed factory reset twice,am I effected by emmc bug?
2. What is the safety precautions for me now? Something like safe kernel or Revert back to GB...? Or anything else?
3. After rooting Uninstalled many useless stuffs like live wallpapers, yahoo finance etc. If I want to be on stock condition, what will I suppose to do?
thanks for reading....
Waiting for Guidance....

I could recommand you to flash a safer kernel than the original one.
With standard ICS Stock Kernel, you NEVER should wipe anything. The brick issu is due to a specific ERASE command sent by the wipe function to Samsung chips. (I hope I am clear enough)
For exemple, you could find under development part of the forum the Franco Kernel which avoid the MMC_CAP_ERASE problem under ICS.
But please check before that this kernel is compatible with your ICS Rom.
See here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659768

i am also with same rom
hello dude ,... i am also running the same firmware and i also did a ota update . but didnt root the device becasue of ics kernal problems . i dont know how to root it and cwm and install custom os in this section . but all i wanted to do is to back to GB ROM. how to go back ?

You have to flash a stock Gb rom through pc Odin. Read dr.ketans thread in development section it has all the info you need.

thanks...but can i use the pc odin ? gb roms are safe to root, cwm and flash custom roms?

If you are on official ICS kernels then DO NOT WIPE ! Neither "FACTORY RESET" via the settings nor via CWM.
GB kernels are safe, you can flash wipe without fear.
Try out ICS roms with Franco/Speedmod kernels they are free from the EMMC bug, but at the same time follow the install instructions carefully.
Cheers

Do NOT factory reset/wipe any more now that you are on stock ICS just to be sure you won't brick! You are hopefully not affected by emmc bug because you are still running your phone. There is a chance you can damage the chip and it will work for a while until you wipe again and then it can fry, but let's hope it won't.
I would HIGHLY recommend you go to a CM9 kernel or ROM base. They are smooth, efficient, SAFE, etc.
You will have to PC Odin a stock rom from drketans thread in android development to go back to stock. Unless you plan on going back to stock GB, I wouldn't worry about it. Don't go back to stock ICS, it's not worth it IMO.

I am not a big fan of touchwiz .
After rooting Uninstalled all the samsung useless stuffs including Twlauncher. I am using Nova launcher. Don't want to use stock ICS. Searching for better option.
I want smooth Android experience.
Inhanced battery life. Stable ROM for daily use.
I am reading all the ROM threads. All seems very good. Confused between them.
Any recommendations for me?

Spend only few hours with SpeedMod kernel. It's too early to say anything.
But I am not experiencing random FC like stock kernel till now. Feeling improvement in performance.
Best of all I am feeling safe and using my phone without fear.
Peace of mind. That's the big thing.

To root or not to root should be your decision.
Dr. Ketans method of rooting is safe if you follow the instructions carefully.
About flashing Speedmod kernel.... Its recommended by other members those are more knowledgeable.
I flashed Speedmod kernel using CMN. No triangles. You should read instructions on that thread.
Best of luck

It's totally up to you as to what ROM you try. I personally would recommend any of the ROMs that say they are built on CM9.
The AOKP ROM is suppose to be really good too and it is safe.

Flashing a custom rom on International Note

Hi guys,
I was a bit confused about flashing and many questions stormed my mind.
Ok my current situation is like this --> I have a rooted galaxy note.
I am on stock ICS 4.0.4
I have kingdroid v3.0 and cynogenmod 9 with me.
I know basics of flashing and will be able to flash them.
My question is that,
Is kingdroid rom safe from the emmc chip bug?
Which method is safer- flashing through ext storage or through odin?
If kingdroid is unsafe, then is it really worth flashing CM9?
Thank you in advance.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Kingdroid is based on CM/AOSP right ?
In order to flash that you need to be on GingerBread, GB is safe from the emmc bug so you wont have any issues.
flashing through CWM or ODIN are at the same safe / risk level, Theres a chance you can brick your phone using either.
However, You will only get the brickbug if you are on a Stock ICS kernel, You shouldnt encounter this as you will be flashing from GB.
Just follow the instructions on the ROM thread and you will be fine.

I agree with the azzle.
Steps:
-Dowgrade to GB
-Flash the abyss kernel [which will also "install" CWM]
-Wipe and flash a rom...

I dont know anything bout this Kingstuff, but CM9 is great, or paranoid rom if you want the tablet/hybrid mode stuff.

Best JB rom + how do you get there from stock ICS?

Hi,
I'm currently on stock ICS (4.0.4).
My phone has recently started occasionally/randomly restarting itself.
I've read that doing a factory reset or data wipe will result in a brick so was thinking of switching to a custom rom.
What's the best Jelly Bean rom? or isn't there a good stable one?
If not then what's the best stable/usable ICS rom and how do I get there from stock?
I know I need to flash GB via pc odin, but what after that?
There are warnings that say "FLASHING FROM STOCK ICS OR ROMS BASED ON STOCK ICS WILL RESULT IN A BRICK!"
I just wanna be as clear as possible. Would hate to have a brick.
Thanks.

JB roms are still in development and not so stable for daily use yet. For flashing custom ICS you do not have to flash GB rom, just flash safe custom ICS kernel and flash custom rom through cwm recovery.
You can also wipe your current rom after flashing safe custom kernel. No need to flash custom rom just because you cannot wipe on stock kernel
For my personal of view, liquid smooth jb v2.0 beta is the best at the moment.
If you on rooted ics. You can flash jb rom thru safe kernel such as cm9 kernel, gb kernel or notecore kernel.
But please read carefully and understand what noted at op and follow the installation method.
Good luck.

Never Never Wipe on ICS as stated in op.
Now everybody knows JB is still under development and in preview. So I think you should have to wait for a stable version to enjoy the juice
For ICS you can try Cleanote v5,Kingdroid or RR for better performance and battery life
Here are the links :-

Here is the best thread for rooting and flashing custom kernel on Note- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Once you are rooted and on safe custom kernel you can follow the instructions on your chosen custom rom OP.
In terms of safer installation method. It have too many of opinions around note forum. Some will say flash any rom or nandroid by using abssy 4.2 kernel, some will say not neccesary to use abssy 4.2 kernel with the secure and safe kernel exists such as notecore and speedmod kernel.
Some will advice you must go back gb before flash cm base rom and some will tell you totally bull**** and not neccesary to go back gb before flash cm base rom with secure tw kernel around.
Confuse? For me, all of them have the right opinion and nothing wrong with them. Thats your own smartphone which cost about usd 500. If you scare of something, just follow the long installation method. If you feel lazy to take do such of long intallation step, you can always use the secure kernel to swap in between gb, tw and cm base rom.
But anyway, is your own asset, your own choice. You are the one who will take full responsibility for doing any modification, rooting and flashing. Not anyone else here.
You can always refer dr.ketan advice.

General questions on rooting and flashing roms on note

Im just stating here that I will generally know what you are talking about, im not a noob when it comes to android modding/roms/rooting, however i have always been worried with my note because ive seen lots of threads on devices being bricked.
basically i want to root my note, get CWM recovery onto it, and then flash whatever ROM/s i choose, without getting my phone bricked in the process.
i want someone to advise me on the best way to go about this whole thing, thankyou!
my device:
Samsung galaxy note (not sure if international or not, i bought from kogan.com.au, i live in australia, and have a telstra sim in it, however i think kogan ships the intl model)
android version: 4.0.3 ICS (stock)
baseband: N7000XXLPT
KERNEL VERSION: 3.0.15-N7000XXLPY-CL474507
BUILD NUMBER: IML74K.XXLPY
carrier: telstra (prepaid, and phone is unlocked)
the main confusion i have here is finding the correct threads for my kernel version, however i couldnt find what i wanted, and was unsure of which was safest, so thanks all for helping me out!

Hello Good Dr. I am about to try rooting via method 1.Rooting with stock recovery. After this am i correct in saying I should flash notecore kernel ? I would be using Mobile Odin to do this as I dont have Windows PC.
What would be safest method to get to ParanoidAndroid JB or CM10 JB from there ? After the Kernel is flashed. Would I have to downgrade to pre-rooted GB rom first then flash ParanoidAndroid ? So your method 1 > flash kernel > downgrade to pre-rooted GB rom > ParanoidAndroid ?
Kind Thanks.
If you want to downgrade to prerooted rom then no need to get root, except you have no option to use pc. In this condition just root n use mobile odin to flash prerooted rom. After successful flashing wipe cache n data and flash cusyom ROM.

So please just to clarify Dr.ketan. If I follow your method 1 to root my ICS Note and then I flash safe notecore kernel via Mobile Odin then I could flash ANY custom rom ? No need to flash a pre-rooted GB rom ? If this is correct would I need to wipe cache and data before flashing custom rom ? Please could you clarify which cache I should wipe ?
Thank you very much.

After flashing note core.you can.flash custom rom if that is ics based.
Otherwise i recommend to flash preroored gb rom first and wipe all (cache, data and delvic cache)

I have read a lot but I'm still a bit confused...
Hello dear friends,
I'm just a newbie here, so please be patient ...
1) I'm planning to root+CWM my n7000 and also (and finally) want to flash CM9.1 (stable) on it. Right now I'm on GB 2.3.6 (not directly rootable) it's ZSLA2... for what I understand from Dr. Ketan's rooting guide is that I have to first downgrade the device flashing a pre-rooted+CWM'ed GB ROM from Chainfire..... ok, no problem.... but, my main question is: once I already have this pre-rooted gingerbread rom, can I (must I) do a hard reset/wipe prior to flash a custom rom?... and, can I FINALLY and DIRECTLY flash the CM9.1 + Gapps files from that chainfire's gingerbread rom version/kernel?... or do I have to upgrade again to a new GB ROM and then flash the CM?.... or even further: do I have to upgrade to a newer GB ROM then to an ICS ROM and only then I would can flash the CM file??....
2) The obligated dumb question: Once I finally flash CM9.1 ROM, it's a must (or a recommended practice) to flash a safe kernel like Franco, Speedmod, Notecore (for safety and/or performance)??
Thank you for your time! cheers

1. always advisable to do all three wipes ( data , cache, dalvik) in CWM if you are on GB and planning to flash another rom from there.
--- yes, you can directly go from pre-rooted Gb to CM 9.1 with g apps
--- when you are on CM and want to go to a custom ics then best to follow the method specified in opening post of the rom thread by developer. all CM kernels are safe to wipe and flash from generally...
2 . Franco , notecore, speedmod are all Touchwiz kernels. a CM rom will not boot with it, its not compatible.there are other CM kernels available that you can use with it, refer kernel repository by Chasmodo

TW and Cm roms have varied/different and many simillar features
you must read through the rom threads for identifying them and choose your rom accordingly
I'm sorry if this question has been answered before, but I couldn't find it by searching.
I'm running 4.0.4 rooted, and would like to unroot it since I have to take my Note to be fixed on warranty. I rooted with temporary CWM and because it's considered to be dangerous now, can I run the Unroot_SuperUser-Busybox-Uninstaller-Update2-signed.zip from Dr. Ketan's root/unroot thread from stock recovery ?
Just wanted to make sure before I do anything stupid. And yes, I know I could flash to stock GB, wipe and flash to stock ICS but if I could unroot straight from recovery it would be a lot easier. Thanks in advance.
Yes you can, but remember if you have flashed custim kernel then first replace with stock. As well if you have update supersu from market, then first uninstall that from setting -appl -all

My problem is i am on the Superbrickable ZCLP5 kernel with ICS Stunner 1.4.19 which i have been using since it first launched without any problems.
As per gotbrickbug App, i have the problem of potential superbrick.
I need to go to another ROM but just cant figure a way out as now am more confused as to what really to do!!
I already have the hydracore kernel downloaded and the stock GB Rom(unrooted - V KL1) with me sitting on my PC alongwith PC ODIN.
Can anybody help me with installing the Paranoidandroid rom and which is the best way to avoid the emmc_CAP_ERASE problem!!

Take it easy, you're fine. If you've installed HydraCore it means you're on a safe kernel. Just download pc Odin if you haven't already.
What rom do you want to go to? I'd recommend for safest operation, install gb stock, then look at upgrade but it depends on which rom you want to flash.
Emmc bug is only triggered on stock kernels or under some cwm flashes which most people don't do, so take it easy, you're ok.

Dear Mods/devs any body who can help me!
I am stuck in a unique situation and no matter what i cant figure out a way out of this!
Before posting this have been through Abhisahara's thread on rooting and kernels, Dr Ketan's thread and many more but all confused!!
Many thanks!!

1. Flash hydracore kernel.
2. Reboot recovery.
3. Make sure you are on hydracore kernel.
4. Do what ever you want.
If you still being scare of doing this. Just follow jeetu suggestion. Go back to gb pre rooted rom by using pc odin. Then use mobile odin to flash rooted kernel. After get full root, go recovery and flash cm9. Done.

I am now flashing the kernel as we speak to hydracore..
Will i lose root if i need to install the ParanoidAndroid rom..
If not..do i need to go the whole way of installing stock GB and then rooting it and then installing the paranoid rom!..
really appreciate the help friends!..

Flashing Hydracore doesn't affect root, you will be rooted and can flash PA directly using cwmr after flashing hydracore.

I would recommend you go with the long route of installing stock GB first. I saw the installation instructions of PA (i'm not sure though if that's an outdated tutorial or if it's still the current one to date), but it explicitly tells you that you need to be on stock GB before installing PA. I'm open to corrections though from those who have PA already installed but personally,it would be good if you start from scratch and work your way up to eventually install PA.
That's just my advice to you.
Hi,
I got a question, I have flashed the kernel to the hydracore one, have root and CWM but I am still on the ICS stock ROM. Is it possible to go directly to paranoid one without the need to downgrade to GB ?
By the way, can you provide a link to dl paranoid ?
Thank you in advance for your answer.

Ok but as I can see the ROM is only 160 MB as other ROM (stock for example are almost 700MB), I don't want to lose some essential functionalities by flashing to an incomplete ROM. How to know which file to dl from the Gapps is there on this one that you have the 500 MB missing ?
Thanks again and sorry for my poor knowledge
All aosp roms are that size.. It's a completely different experience as aosp roms are pure Google experience with no Samsung or any other retailers custom launcher and bloat..
It depends on Wich functionalities do you have in mind?

Ok thanks so they put a lot of useless heavy crap inside I guess
I am still struggling to have a download link for a stable zip file to flash, is it possible to have a link ?
Thank you
I've downloaded the rom in the past no issues.. Don't know about mirrors.. Maybe ask there in the ParanoidAndroid threat

[Q] This is getting annoying!

Dear all,
I am running CriskeloROM Note ICS v10 on N7000XXLRB and am fed up with it.. :crying:
Tryed to flash it with chrack XXLRQ rom, Cyanogen and RocketRom v11 but no matter what i do it just wont flash?
It barely starts to flash, and then it restarts as if nothing had happened?
I tryed to flash a new kernel: AbyssNote kernel because that the author of chrack advices me to do so in his original post... And when i try to flash Abyss kernel, it stars flashing, and just hangs on "installing..."
Any ideas? ::crying:

try full wipe in cwmr if you are on latest safe kernels or flash pre-rooted GB rom (link in my sig) using pc odin and then start all over again.

First, be kind enough in appreciating the developers for the ROMs they provide.
Nobody asks you to install any of the ROMs they provide. Its you who use them. You get to use it for free but you neither be courteous nor thankful for the ROMs they provide you.
I never find any of the ROMs giving problems and all works charm. Use ODIN and downgrade to GB rom then use appropriate ROMs you wish CWM. Try to see Dr. Ketan's post on how to install a stock rom and later install Custom ROM of your choice.

Why do you attack the op? He hasn't done anything wrong. He is fed up because nothing works and he asks for help. What's wrong with that? Back to topic: I would try to flash a full wipe GB rom using pc odin. If it does not work flash a safe kernel and do a full wipe in cwm recovery. Then you can try again to flash your desired rom.

First step, don't desperate.
When u do desperate, u will do as what u write. Looks like blaming on the dev.
I agree with xda rocks, that all roms here is provided in a way free to use, with a lil bit donation or thanks only.
But the dev has tried their best to puke their rom in any means before releasing out. And the instruction of the flashing is based on testing experienced also.
I m sorry if u never mean to attack or disrespect the dev, but u make evryone think so with how u write in ur post.
Starting from saying u fed up with criskelorom, then blame on chrack for advising u to install abyss which end up not working for ur device.
I have no idea what tweaks and change have u done to ur phone, but always advisable to do a full wiping when u want to cross over rom, either by going back to GB first, or use a safe kernel on ICS. You may refer to dr. Ketan method.
I came from criskelo, change to stock rom, then change to chrack, then classic, now on chrash.
All rom is just fine.
Thanks to all the devs.

Thank you all for your replyes I will try to downgrade to ginger first, and then upgrade again!
To antique_sonic & xda rocks: You guys got i all wrong. I am not blaming the developers for anything? And i am the first to say thank you for their hard work. What i ment was that i was fed up with the problem that I was having? there is / should be a huge difference...?
Anyways, thank you guys for defending the developers...

Good.
Glad to hear that. Coz i only feel the blame on ur first post.
But since u clear it up, lets just forget it.
And good luck.
Any probs just post back.
Remember to full wipe if u change rom.
I always do that, and come with no probs at all.
