Just got the 16GB Tab a few days ago...
Well after scouring the forums for all sorts of info, the amount of research done on the Tab by you people is amazing ........ and still searching for more info day by day....
I wish to know which version of gingerbread is the "most stable one" ??
The asian ones which have been recently released ? Or the latest european firmware ?
Because I wish to run a stock samsung's own GB version before straightaway going in for a custom ROM like Overcome...
Also if I want the closest stock ROM based experience should I go for -
[ROM/Kernel][GSM][Android 2.3.3] ROM based DXJPE (build 23 June) by DiP7 ???
ANother newbish question will be -
If I flash a ROM and install the provided kernel with it ? Do I need to also flash a new modem file via ODIN ? or the original file stays there ?
And do I need OCLF after installing a stock/custom GB based ROM just for some speed improvements and/or does the EXT2 file system conversion give boost ? (because OCLF in my Galaxy S SL i9003 really did make overall performance better) Also the lagfix to be applied is V1+ right ? or do I also go for applying V2 lagfix in OCLF?
Thanks for reading all this and I would love to hear your ideas over these questions ....
No , no need to for the modem file after flashing rom.
I see you are in India ( me too ) so Asian rom will be better .
No need of lagfix and oc overcome is very smooth .
P.S :If you flash Asian GB please tell whether it contains Indian languages .
A good stock GB rom choice is JQ1 because it has the proper, safe bootloaders, and can be easily rooted using the Chainfire CF-Root v3.3 kernel.
From there you can go in any direction.

ive been using it quite a while now and havent switched, im using a diferent kernel however, devil 14.2 but i hear 1.1.5 is just as good haven't tested yet
i would just use default settings and tweak as you get used to it, you can download nstools from market for tweaking also voodoo sound for audio tweaking
As above but don't forget to do a Nand backup. Some people have lost there IMEI numbers flashing Team ICSSG. (myself included - if it wasn't for the backup it is a mission to get the emia number back) I tried Team ICSSGS first and haven't looked back.
Semaphore 0.9.1 or Semaphore 0.8.1 are both great kernels. They both have similar speed as devil but have better battery life. (I've tried Devil 15.1 & 14.2, Semaphore 0.8, 0.8.1, 0.9 & 0.9.1)
ICSSGS RC4.2 doesn't have IMEI missing issue.
I tried installing top of stock ROM.
Just do a backup of "efs" folder which holds all the device identity details.
Incase if you loss your IMEI, you can simply replace "efs" folder to resolve the issue.
Hi guys,
I was a bit confused about flashing and many questions stormed my mind.
Ok my current situation is like this --> I have a rooted galaxy note.
I am on stock ICS 4.0.4
I have kingdroid v3.0 and cynogenmod 9 with me.
I know basics of flashing and will be able to flash them.
My question is that,
Is kingdroid rom safe from the emmc chip bug?
Which method is safer- flashing through ext storage or through odin?
If kingdroid is unsafe, then is it really worth flashing CM9?
Thank you in advance.

Kingdroid is based on CM/AOSP right ?
In order to flash that you need to be on GingerBread, GB is safe from the emmc bug so you wont have any issues.
flashing through CWM or ODIN are at the same safe / risk level, Theres a chance you can brick your phone using either.
However, You will only get the brickbug if you are on a Stock ICS kernel, You shouldnt encounter this as you will be flashing from GB.
Just follow the instructions on the ROM thread and you will be fine.

I agree with the azzle.
Steps:
-Dowgrade to GB
-Flash the abyss kernel [which will also "install" CWM]
-Wipe and flash a rom...
-\0/
I dont know anything bout this Kingstuff, but CM9 is great, or paranoid rom if you want the tablet/hybrid mode stuff.

Im just stating here that I will generally know what you are talking about, im not a noob when it comes to android modding/roms/rooting, however i have always been worried with my note because ive seen lots of threads on devices being bricked.
basically i want to root my note, get CWM recovery onto it, and then flash whatever ROM/s i choose, without getting my phone bricked in the process.
i want someone to advise me on the best way to go about this whole thing, thankyou!
my device:
Samsung galaxy note (not sure if international or not, i bought from kogan.com.au, i live in australia, and have a telstra sim in it, however i think kogan ships the intl model)
android version: 4.0.3 ICS (stock)
baseband: N7000XXLPT
KERNEL VERSION: 3.0.15-N7000XXLPY-CL474507
BUILD NUMBER: IML74K.XXLPY
carrier: telstra (prepaid, and phone is unlocked)
the main confusion i have here is finding the correct threads for my kernel version, however i couldnt find what i wanted, and was unsure of which was safest, so thanks all for helping me out!

Hello Good Dr. I am about to try rooting via method 1.Rooting with stock recovery. After this am i correct in saying I should flash notecore kernel ? I would be using Mobile Odin to do this as I dont have Windows PC.
What would be safest method to get to ParanoidAndroid JB or CM10 JB from there ? After the Kernel is flashed. Would I have to downgrade to pre-rooted GB rom first then flash ParanoidAndroid ? So your method 1 > flash kernel > downgrade to pre-rooted GB rom > ParanoidAndroid ?
Kind Thanks.
If you want to downgrade to prerooted rom then no need to get root, except you have no option to use pc. In this condition just root n use mobile odin to flash prerooted rom. After successful flashing wipe cache n data and flash cusyom ROM.

So please just to clarify Dr.ketan. If I follow your method 1 to root my ICS Note and then I flash safe notecore kernel via Mobile Odin then I could flash ANY custom rom ? No need to flash a pre-rooted GB rom ? If this is correct would I need to wipe cache and data before flashing custom rom ? Please could you clarify which cache I should wipe ?
Thank you very much.
[Resolved via DM. Thanks Dr.Katan]
After flashing note core.you can.flash custom rom if that is ics based.
Otherwise i recommend to flash preroored gb rom first and wipe all (cache, data and delvic cache)

Can I flash pre-rooted gb rom with mobile odin ? do I need a tar file or will it work with zip ? or should I use recovery mode and a zip ?
Thank you.
Stephen
Mobile odin can't flash zip.recovery.files. You can flash tar file, and prerooted gb rom is in tar. You can use mobile odin for that

Is this safe to do on mobile odin ? Please could you provide me with a link to a pre-rooted gb rom in .tar format as the one in your sig is in .zip
Stephen
Just extract that, n you will get .tar file.

Well guys. It looks like my flashing rom days are over before they have begun !
Tryed flashing the pre-rooted GB rom via Mobile Odin. This is what I get http://twitpic.com/an6zbi
This isnt right is it. Surely the other sections should be filled in not just System ? This is a real problem as I dont have Windows and can get my head around Heimdall. Im stumped. Is there a file I can use via Restore to install the rom ?
Hope someone can help !

I have read a lot but I'm still a bit confused...
Hello dear friends,
I'm just a newbie here, so please be patient ...
1) I'm planning to root+CWM my n7000 and also (and finally) want to flash CM9.1 (stable) on it. Right now I'm on GB 2.3.6 (not directly rootable) it's ZSLA2... for what I understand from Dr. Ketan's rooting guide is that I have to first downgrade the device flashing a pre-rooted+CWM'ed GB ROM from Chainfire..... ok, no problem.... but, my main question is: once I already have this pre-rooted gingerbread rom, can I (must I) do a hard reset/wipe prior to flash a custom rom?... and, can I FINALLY and DIRECTLY flash the CM9.1 + Gapps files from that chainfire's gingerbread rom version/kernel?... or do I have to upgrade again to a new GB ROM and then flash the CM?.... or even further: do I have to upgrade to a newer GB ROM then to an ICS ROM and only then I would can flash the CM file??....
2) The obligated dumb question: Once I finally flash CM9.1 ROM, it's a must (or a recommended practice) to flash a safe kernel like Franco, Speedmod, Notecore (for safety and/or performance)??
Thank you for your time! cheers

1. always advisable to do all three wipes ( data , cache, dalvik) in CWM if you are on GB and planning to flash another rom from there.
--- yes, you can directly go from pre-rooted Gb to CM 9.1 with g apps
--- when you are on CM and want to go to a custom ics then best to follow the method specified in opening post of the rom thread by developer. all CM kernels are safe to wipe and flash from generally...
2 . Franco , notecore, speedmod are all Touchwiz kernels. a CM rom will not boot with it, its not compatible.there are other CM kernels available that you can use with it, refer kernel repository by Chasmodo

TW and Cm roms have varied/different and many simillar features
you must read through the rom threads for identifying them and choose your rom accordingly
I'm sorry if this question has been answered before, but I couldn't find it by searching.
I'm running 4.0.4 rooted, and would like to unroot it since I have to take my Note to be fixed on warranty. I rooted with temporary CWM and because it's considered to be dangerous now, can I run the Unroot_SuperUser-Busybox-Uninstaller-Update2-signed.zip from Dr. Ketan's root/unroot thread from stock recovery ?
Just wanted to make sure before I do anything stupid. And yes, I know I could flash to stock GB, wipe and flash to stock ICS but if I could unroot straight from recovery it would be a lot easier. Thanks in advance.
Yes you can, but remember if you have flashed custim kernel then first replace with stock. As well if you have update supersu from market, then first uninstall that from setting -appl -all

hi
here is my version:
-Galaxy S GT-i9000
-2.3.6 XXJW4
-some 2.6.35.7 kernel
my question is can i flash this kerner to one of those below?
mngb0.5.6
Devil 0.08
Glitch 13.1
SpeedMod Gingerbread
Semaphore 2.7.4
and which one do u prefer for speed and performance?
sorry for my english
Semaphore is standard in a lot of GB Roms
Speedmod would be my preference.. but why?
Are you having issues with it?
You are on JW4 2.3.6 - JW9 is out

yes im on jw4 2.3.6.i thought jw4 is for europe so i downloaded it.can i flash jw9 over this one or do a fresh one?
are there any improvements in jw9.
thnx for reply
got my sgs on december 2012 and this was my first flash ever :/ so like i told i have no experience with this for now, but its not so hard.
I am a fan of GB roms, easier to mod :silly:
Phone slow as in how?
It all depends on what you use the phone for as there are roms out there for multitasking, games, overall use etc...
Im on GB Saurom JW9.. Its stable and well balanced (my preference, I am in the UK)
Or the MesoRom, there are many.....depending on your needs
Flashing a kernel can cause issues, a lot of people have crashed there phones cause they flashed the wrong ones
Read up or PM the developer of the Rom to see whats suited to your phone and other peoples posts.
Flashing another Rom :
If its a GB rom that you want to flash then its JVU First, then Root JVU then Flash your Rom that your wanting to use.
SEE HERE
Let me know if you need more help

thnx for reply i will try that link u gave me tonight.
the gt uses too much RAM and its a bit laggy.i dont use it so much but i like it smooth.on AnTuTu Benchmark i had 3777 score and on Quadrant can remember but i think it was 17xx.
i have like one or two games on it and some apps that i use every day.got rid of some system apps, was experimenting little and i was suprized.had like 190-200 free RAM always.but when i instaled google play it droped like hell 100-140.
after flashing with JVU i can flash any rom i like?4.2.1 JB???
in this curret 2.3.6 i dont have recovey mode.couldnt fix it .tryed 100 times, all possibilities.
i want this ROM to install on my sgs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2041928
so can i flash it after JVU???
Yes just follow my Walkthrough and you can install any Rom you wish : HERE
Also If you like my themed rom of JW9 Saurom Thats HERE if you wish that i am using with no lags etc...
Do not flash GB from JB. You need to install ICS first, even for 5 minutes..
Flashing from GB directly to JB will likely lose your IMEI number and that will, depending on your country, leave your phone unable to call, text etc lol
If you know how to restore efs then you can miss out ICS without problem.
