first i am with stock 2.3.6 and then ota updated to ics ... then rooted and by mobile odin i used to flash speedmood kernal ...
so i am with ics ...then i flashed a ics custom rom by using abyss kernal...
now i am with custom ics firmware... so can i flash this gb custom rom ???
if yes how ??? like again using abyss kernal...full wipe and flash any custom gb rom ?
switcing from custom ics to gb will give problem
Which ICS custom ROM are you on?
You can use PC Odin to go back to Gingerbread and then root it and flash a custom GB rom.
Or you can flash Abyss and then reboot recovery and flash a gingerbread custom rom. If you aren't on a stock ICS rom, you can probably just flash gingerbread rom from CWM (like if you are using CM9, franco kernel, or speedmod kernel).

This rom uses an unsafe kernel but for now there is no evidence that a kernel flash can hardbrick the phone. However, I think it's safer flash a secure one (like last speedmod or franco's which should be safe) with odin or mobile odin (extract the .zip until you have te zimage, then flash it), then flash a GB rom.
Otherwise, you can still flash a GB stock rom DIRECTLY ROOTABLE with odin (or MO), then obtain root + cwm and finally flash a gb custom rom with cwm safely.
Gingerbread custom ROMs
Hello Friends, I have asked this question before in another thread but unfortunately there have been no responses.
What are the various Gingerbread custom ROMs available for the Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000? CyanogenMod 7 is based on Gingerbread but unfortunately the Galaxy Note is not officially supported.
I am presently on stock Gingerbread and I will be rooting my device in the coming few days. Having played around with stock Gingerbread, I would like to do the same with custom Gingerbread firmwares.
One more query, considering my current Android version is 2.3.6, am I subjected to using a custom ROM which is 2.3.6 or am I free to use any 2.3.x based?
I humbly request you all to respond to these queries of mine. Awaiting your apt replies.

I currently have a rooted phone with custom 2.2.1 based rom.
CWM recovery is also installed.
I'd like to know if I can flash a stock rom via recovery.
You need Odin/heimdall to flash a stock ROM. Look in the development section stickies, or do an official update
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
So if I downloaded I897UCKJ2.rar I can only flash it via ODIN ?
You are on Froyo bootloader...with froyo rom...for GB roms u have to flash GB bootloader...there is a whole thread in Dev section with different options to flash GB...I would suggest flash KK4 with bootloader and then Kernel with CWM built in...and u will be good...NOTE: Falshing bootloader might brick your phone...but u just have to do it once...
If you just want the latest "stock" gingerbread you can just use the samsung kies mini to get kk4 and it will give you bootloaders and the stock rom
hey everyone
im flashing my phone back to stock in order to flash a new custom rom (themidteam 1.1) and i must start from GB or ICS based on LP5, now, as the rom im using is not based on LP5, i have to flash back to GB and start all over agine, now, my question is, how to flash the stock rom? do i simply flash it using odin? or there are other proccess?
and is there anyway to make my ICS rom (midnote 2.0) which is based on LP1, based on LP5?
sorry for these noob questions
and thanks
Yes Odin is the way
Flash stock GB (or one of the pre rooted stock GB) using Odin, get CF Root for that ROM and then follow the flashing procedure described in the OP of tue ROM you want to flash

Yes Abyss Kernel is a GB kernel, you can flash it on rooted GB ROMs and even keep it if you like it
After you flash ICS ROM (or restore an ICS backup) Abyss kernel will be over written by the kernel provided in the ROM zip (or backup zip)
until now that i read about the bug with the ics roms have i didnt bother to use them....i am using asylum because i read that the cm kernels are safe......i was just wondering if now is safe to flash some touchwiz roms ?
to flash touchwiz ROMs you will need a samsung based kernel, I assume you want to test out some TW ICS ROMs ?
If that is the case, Upgrade to ICS using ODIN, Once completed, let the phone boot, then reboot back into download mode and flash a safe ICS kernel made for Samsung ROMs, Such as Speedmod.
Dont use a CM kernel on a Samsung ICS ROM, And DONT wipe using a Stock ICS ROM.
with this that you told me i assume that the speedmod and franco ics kernels are now safe as before the ics ?
Yes both kernels are safe from the MMC_CAP_ERASE bug which bricks the phone.
However, to flash these kernels you should already be on ICS, Of which i assume you are ?
i am on cm9 asylum 15
ok, well if you want to flash a TW ICS ROM, you will need to:
1) Wipe your phone in CWM
2) Download ICS for ODIN
3) Flash ICS in ODIN
4) reboot, then reboot to download mode
5) Flash a SAFE kernel, Such as speedmod
6) Flash the ROM of your choice
NB: Installation instructions may differ, providing which ROM you want to use, Always double check on the ROMs Thread !
Its been sometime since I have bought the note. I was wary of installing custom ROM's due to the various hardbrick issues. I have installed custom ROM's on other android devices (Galaxy S, Dell Venue) hence do have some basic knowledge. I am on stock rooted Indian ICS ROM :silly:
Two questions before I start:
1. I am sitting on a potential dangerous ROM, and I know it. Has there been any light on EMMC hardbrick bug by Samsung, (I have not tried any OTA updates in fear of bricking the phone). I am on Android version 4.0.3 (baseband version N7000DDLP4).
2. Is the CWM hardbrick bug sorted?
So I intended to follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Flash stock GB ROM through ODIN.
2. Root and install CWM (Is CWM the only method of installing custom ROM's)
3. Install the custom ROM (I was looking at Liquid Black ROM based on CM9)
sounds ok
use pc odin to flash GB tar file
CWM is the only way to install/flash zip files of custom roms that are available here.

1. No rom is dangerous, it is just the Kernel, change stock kernel with some safe kernel and you will be okay.
2. Yes, use safe kernel like Speedmod or Notecore, they have safe cwm too.
Maximum of custom roms can be installed using cwm recovery only, but look for Alliance rom, it can be flashed with odin too.

Wouldnt the custom ROM packages include the kernel too? If I am installing from stock GB ROM, are you infering the kernel will be what Samsung released when it came out with the GB update?

It does, that's why I said flash safe custom kernel and you will be good on stock rom too!, so basically its just the kernel which is faulty and no issue with rom as long as you use with safe kernel. You can also flash stock firmware using mobile odin and can inject custom kernel at same time.

Yep you are good to go as GB kernels are safe. You can also
1.If you are on stock ICS : Root it and install abyss kernel (Its a GB kernel so your phone wont boot).
2.Reboot recovery & Wipe data
3.Install your CM9 ROM.
Best of luck

Well referring to my given procedure (If you follow it) after flashing Liquid Smooth you will have its kernel (CM9 kernels are safe for wiping) as far as in case you consider flashing TW custom ROMS just make sure it has a safe kernel (Speedmod or notecore) before wiping.
Thanks, the inputs are appreciated.
A final question, I read that stock ICS rooted through CWM.zip is unsafe. Unfortunately I had rooted my stock ICS installation the same way, phone is working fine till now. Anything I should be wary of before proceeding (yeah am nervous about bricking the device).
I am planning to install a pre-rooted GB ROM as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20963718&postcount=2
I am planning to download the N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000CPWKK3 -----------United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)----- Download version, and flash it as posted by Dr Ketan.
I will follow the method to root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
I flashed gingerbread and rooted my note a long time ago using dr.ketan method and now i want to flash a custom ICS with all the bloatware removed,
Ive forgotten the procedure now as its been so long, basically im worried about the unsafe kernels and also now ive read about the CWM.zip not being safe I have CWM installed on mine as well as HC-kTool, can some kind soul show me the steps to get a safe ICS running?
ive listed all the info below
many thanks
to root i used - DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su

All gb kernels are safe to flash
So you can simply do all wipes and flash a custom ics rom
If you flash stock ics rom, then you need to flash a safe kernel. All stock ics kernels are unsafe to wipe
