[Q] ow to tell if my GN has eMMC damage? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
When I posted a query in the general forum, I was informed about the possibility of the eMMC damaged on my GN. It happened after I hard reset it after upgrading it to the stock ICS (N7000XXLPT/ N7000XXLQ2).
My question is, before I try to fix it by the offered suggestions, how do I know for sure that the eMMC in fact is damaged? The only issue I've with my GN is that my data connection with straight talk is all over and hade to change the APN settings a few times.
Thank you all for your help!

You wont know unless its affected.
But dont go about wiping etc just to find out, though thats the only way to really know.
You can also download Chainfires brick bug app to see if you have a dangerous emmc chip. You can find it in apps/themes section.

me again...
You may or may not have caused damage... it does have a random characteristic. Like I said just don't wipe, factory reset or try to flash or restore anything while on that stock kernel.
Aside from some complicated ADB command lines that try to write to all sectors, you don't know if you are damaged. You are probably ok, in that your phone is mostly working for now! The damage usually show up when trying to use PC odin to flash a full ROM.... it gets stuck at writing the factory image.
Just take your time, study up, wait for more expert help, and don't make a stupid mistake.
My advice if you want to stay on ICS
1. Root it (follow guides for rooting stock ICS)
2. Then flash speedmod or france kernel from CWM or Mobile Odin
Probably safer to flash safe kernel only from PC Odin. Thats what I did. And I think triangle away works now also.
If you scared and want to get back on GB Rom, do what I did and PC odin a CF GB kernel only.
Wait for others advice:....

Thank you, both! I did download an app called "got a brickbug?" which gladly told me that my eMMC chip indeed was at risk of being infected
When I look under the storage, this is what I see:
Device memory
Total space" 1.97 GB
Applications: 360 MB
Available: 1.56 GB
USB storage
Total space: 11.07 GB
App: 50 MB
Available: 11 GB
Do these numbers look right, or am I being paranoid?

Those numbers look perfectly fine.

Ty, Belfia!

[Q] pls techies help me out I9000 internal sdcard issue

Hi,techies customer brought the fone in restart condition on galaxy s screen with wrong flash.i flashed almost all the firmwares available from samfirmware using odin, with pit and without .pit it gives me the error :
E:cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk01p (no such file or directory)
E:copy_dbdata_media:can't mount SDCARD.
fone starts up normally when flashed with JPJPM but the internal sd caard shows unavailable and cant run any apps and camera.after adb and got the output of
busybox df -h as below.Pls techies sort out this issue as i am not that much familiar with CMD's
I would like to help you, but this is very serious and technically complicated way to solve your problem.
So, first, go to the Google.com, and you have to read all FAQ and help located There
then, if you'll gain enough techie skills, you should buy a small plasma burner, and steel plate, 1.5-2mm thick, 15x20cm.
When you will have this equipment, you can use Google first, asking your question, it should direct you to This thread on XDA here.
And now most complicated thing:
while applying the patch given in this thread, use your plasma burner to cut the sentence: "I will ALWAYS use Google to help myself FIRST"

thanks for response,I have applied the patch file very first attempt, googled every post,
resurrected in riff, flashed with nearly dozen firmwares with and without pit at last used EZodin to flash EZboot_gingerbread and froyo as instructed in guides.
I have searched the google already but with no results
Strange, as it would definitely clarify this specific issue...
Have you tried to:
factory reset;
ginger flash with repartition
apply this patch?

Yes i have factory reset numerous times for every flash before and after, flashed with JHJV6 gingerbread, but i can't remember i have applied patch after this GB flash,ok any how i will give a try now and let u know.any how thanks for suggestions.
Hmm.. make sure that ROM contains bootloader too...
Yes offcourse it has the boot.bin file .And for correction it is JPJV6 and not JHJV6 as i mentioned in my previos post.some where in the forum i have found the guide for this and i'll try after i go to office and let u know.
******************
Found this guide:
Basically like everyone else my SGS (I9000M from Bell) died due to an internal SD error, but in my case I haven't updated the phone since I got it in September 2010 (it had the JG9 firmware). The good thing is I was able to flash it to the stock Froyo 2.2, and I'm currently using it as normal and can access the internal SD without problems.
Summary of steps that most likely fixed the problem:
1. Go into recovery mode and "wipe data/factory reset". If your phone boots (but still have problems accessing the SD card) then it's a good indication that you maybe able to fix it.
2. Flash JL2 (from samfirmware.com) using ODIN. Not sure if this is needed, but you may need to ask ODIN to Re-partition. You still get an error "Can't mount DBDATA", and the phone won't boot. That's ok.
3. Flash the SpeedMod Kernel using ODIN (I used SpeedMod K12J with HZ=256). Your phone should boot into JL2 and the SD card should be accessible again.
At this point your internal SD card is fixed and you should be able to flash whatever you want. Just note that Kies will sometimes not work properly with the SpeedMod installed. In my case I flashed 2.1 (JH2) again (this won't work if you have 2.2 without speedmod kernel), then used Kies to update to 2.2 (JL2).

Need advice on how to completely reset/clean/unroot my KL7 Note

I am getting lag lately and KL7 upgrade didn't sort it so I think something is messed up.
As with computer I think the easiest way is to backup apps + settings + custom files + SMS and delete everything.
Now as this is the first time on an Android device what steps do you (please) suggest me to follow without going to brick my Note?
My device is rooted and I have Titanium (if needed).

When it comes to backup you can always use titanium backup and stuff or if its just the apps you are looking at then you can back them up @ Google Server itself.
Un-rooting your device please follow the steps here -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Now when it comes to clean/reset of your device you can by two methods:
1. Go to Settings-->Privacy-->Factory Data Reset
2. Dial *2767*3855# (Note: This will erase your Storage card too.. Everything will be back to factory)
PS: Its a bit strange because KL7 is virtually lag free.
Hope this helps.

In fact I was having it already since a couple of weeks with KK9 (up since day 1) and when I upgraded to KL9 that was the proof it's not a firmware lag issue.
Thanks mate, your help is appreciated.

Your Welcome
I meant internal SD card. External SD card is not an issue since you can always pop it out before the wipe.
I would suggest you do a complete wipe. Reflash the ROM/Kernel etc (dont OC or experiment too much) and monitor things. As of now KL8 is up ;maybe you can give that a shot.

Wow that was quick!
Maybe Samsung itself had to hurry at fixing all the bugs we have encountered.
Hmm going to try the new firmware before the complete wipe then.
Thanks again.
Hi there,
trying to unroot my Note with KKA kernel. I know I have to place the zImage of the KKA kernel in the zImage folder...thing is, where do I find the original kernel? Is it the zImage that I downloaded when rooting and CWM'ing my Note (the KKA file I got from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)
Reason why I'm trying to get back to the original kernel is that I want to use Rom Manager as it's refusing to let me do anything as long as I don't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. I do have that installed, but apparently not the one Rom Manager wants to use. I used Rom Manager on my Nexus S and it was nice to use and easy to try out different Roms so I'd like to use it on the Note as well.
I have CWM Manager 3.0 installed and it looks quite the same as Rom Manager except that it hasn't got the Download Rom/check for new updates feature. Or is it just that Rom Manager isn't compatible (yet) with the Note? Or is there a way to make Rom Manager believe that I have the correct CMR installed?
When thinking about it...I think I have the original kernel installed, but that that's not the reason why Rom Manager doesn't let me use it.
Thanks,
Dimitri
Problem solved meanwhile.

Can my Galaxy Note be saved?

Hey guys,
First of all, I'm new to this, so please bear with me. To cut a long story short, I attempted to install the CyanogenMod RC on my Galaxy Note N7000 today. I followed the instructions I found on the web somewhere (can't remember of it was XDA) and after attempting to wipe my device from the ClockwordMod, I appear to have bricked it.
My Note no longer gets passed the startup screen. I've tried everything I can to revive it, and I've been searching XDA all day for a solution, with little success. I've tried flashing a number of kernels, and a number of ROMs, including stock GB and stock ICS. I can still get into both Download and Recovery mode (which I'm hoping is a good sign) but when I try to flash a ROM with Odin, it gets stuck on the "factoryfs" stage.
I've tried flashing the PIT repartition file at least four or five times, but that doesn't seem to be helping at all.
Does anyone have any other ideas? I'd really just like to get back to stock ICS. I just fancied playing around with CyanogenMod for a bit, but I wish I hadn't tried. Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes, downloaded via Kies.
I think you have fallen victim to the infamous eMMC "superbrick". Contact Samsung, they are well aware of this problem and will surely replace it for you as it's plaguing devices running their stock ICS. The problem is with their kernel and the eMMC chip to it doesnt even matter what were you trying to do.
When they do replace it - first, flash a GB rom via Odin, and then install CM9. CM9 kernel is safe and superbrick bug free. Whatever you do - never try doing a wipe/factory reset on stock Samsung ICS rom.

Yeah, I feared that was the case. The problem is, I now have the yellow warning triangle on bootup, and my "binary count" has increased to 9. Does this mean Samsung won't replace it?
if that's the case, is there any way to reset the binary count and remove the triangle in its current state?
You might try resetting the counter with a jig. I don't know if it will work in its state, but you may not have much to lose.
Sent from a guy on a buffalOOooo.
Generally - USB Jig is the only way to reset it on a bricked device.
There is one way other way though:
http://www.mediafire.com/?5bmrc6cf81w5mya
This kernel is supposed to reset binary counter, and many users reported that it actually did the trick - mind that this kernel also causes hard brick. It's a last effort for people whose devices are already bricked.
You nees to flash it via Odin, disconnect and go into recovery. At first boot you will still see the triangle - in the recovery, select reboot. Now the triangle should disappead, and binary counter should be set to "no".
Remember that this kernel causes a hard brick. Use it only if your device is already bricked and you intend to send it to Samsung. It will work only on ICS devices.

Thanks very much for your help. I really appreciate it.
So do you think it's worth contacting Samsung first - before trying to reset the binary - or do you think they'll refuse to replace it once they know I tried flashing an unsupported ROM?
Thanks again!
I think you might try contacting them first, just ask all the info you need without giving them the serial numbers - before you send the phone in. They might replace it anyway - they know very well it happens because of their defective kernel/emmc chip. Although i'm afraid they might find out and refuse to fix it for free.
If they turn you down, then flash the kernel and contact them again. If you're going to do it in person and they refuse cause they "remembered you" ( shocking, but it happens... ) then simply get a friend or family to bring them your phone.
Just say that Kies messed up your phone - they'll know what the problem is
Hope they'll get it fixed for you. Let us know how it went.

Stock recovery? Where would I find that?
The problem is, I cannot flash any ROM. It just hangs during the "factoryfs" process in Odin. When I try to install stuff via ClockworkMod recovery, it fails. Sometimes I get an error like "cannot mount (or access) /system."

Not true I'm afraid...
If you've damaged the eMMC chip:
- You can still get into recovery.
- You can still get into download mode.
If you did a factory reset on stock ICS kernel and can't flash "factoryfs" data because Odin gets stuck at this point, and repartitioning does not help - that's the "superbrick".
It happens because using data wipe on stock ICS kernel runs a format procedure which damages Note's defective eMMC chip. If it happened, repartitioning won't help as parts of the storage are corrupted and Odin simply cannot put data there. I seriosusly don't know how could Samsung not see that the format command introduced in ICS ( it was not present in GB, that's why GB kernels are safe ) damages the chip... didn't they test the software at all ?
Take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28048062
This guy managed to recover his device, but what he's left with is Note with 3-4GB less storage, and remember that once the eMMC chip is damaged, it will never be completely reliable again.
Here's a guide on how to revive superbricked Note. Bear in mind it might not work though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26285877&postcount=12
It's still best to try and get it replaced though. If Samsung won't replace it for free - then try reviving it.

Yeah, I'm certainly going to speak to Samsung over the next few days. I'm going to wait a little while for my JIG to arrive and try to remove the binary count, then I'll give them a call. I don't see how they can refuse to replace it really —*it is their software that caused this (I think).
Keeping my fingers crossed.

JIG is probably the best thing to do. Clear the counter, get rid of triangle and send it in. As you said - it's Samsung's kernel that causes this, and they know it.
Good luck mate.
Okay, here's a surprise: Because I can still enter download and recovery mode, I decided I would try to reset the binary counter before my JIG gets here. So I downloaded the kernel from another thread, and it worked perfect. I then tried to flash the stock ICS ROM so that there was no evidence of another one, and this time it didn't get stuck on "factoryfm" in Odin.
So I now have a working Galaxy Note. I have no idea how that happened (maybe the PIT I flashed earlier kicked in), but it's working.
Now the question is, do I attempt to install CyanogenMod again, or should I just stick to a working Galaxy Note and be happy?

How much capacity do you have on your internal storage? If it is less than 11GB you may have a damaged chip and just managed to unbrick it.
I think if you can flash GB with Odin you should be fine, and once you get to GB everything is (relatively) safe.
I had a similar problem when I was trying to flash GB from stock ICS using odin, it stuck at FactoryFS and I thought I had superbricked it, but it turns out I was using a dodgy USB cable and using a good USB cable I managed to flash GB again and recover it, and now I am using CM9 - Never going back to stock ICS after this.

Regain memory after repartition?

Is it possible to regain memory lost after repartition? My laptop died while i was using odin and this hardbricked my phone and i brought it to likfe using hg42's Q1_20110914_16GB-patched.pit Is there anyway i could regain this memory and if so how? Sorry if i have reposted but i have searched for about half an hour now and found nothing, thanks for you help xda users
Read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740672
There are some ways of regaining some of the space lost, There is also a way to swap internal SD with external SD, So your 32gb SD card (say you have one) will become internal memory and vice versa
Its a tricky process that i dont know much about, It requires time and patience.
good luck :good:
Would i be able to flash over a stock non rooted gingerbread with a stock ics and a regain pit file? Would this work? I was able to revive my phone before using a regain pit file but this time it didnt work. Thanks again azzledazzle
AFAIK it is possible, But you will have to flash the patched pit file too, Flashing to ICS wont recover the lost space, The blocks are damaged so the pit file repartitions the blocks around the bad blocks, Hence why you lose 2-3gb of space.
I believe if you just flash a stock ROM without the patched pit file you will just simply put your phone back into that bricked state.
Im no expert on this, Luckily i havent bricked my note.......yet, So im just guessing this is correct based on what ive read / seen on XDA.
But do look deeper into it if you are considering it, As not everything i have said may be 100% accurate.
Have a look at this thread, entropy has been in talks with Samsung on a possible solution to fully restoring damaged emmc partitions, worth reading and keeping up with it. There should be another update soon.

[Q] N7000 emmc bricked can now only run GB

Hi,
I was quite happily running ICS4.0.4 (rooted) when I decided to try a different ROM (and/or JB - can't even remember any more).
After I did a wipe (I know, I know!!!) it got stuck on the boot logo screen.
I had the phone fixed by a 3rd-party repair shop, who installed ICS4.0.3 on it and, while at the shop, I used the phone a bit to make sure it was ok.
It kept crashing intermittently, so they had another go at it and now they tell me they could only install GB on it.
So, keeping in mind that the phone had the emmc bug and I tripped over it:
Is there anyway I can install ICS again on it?
I could use some of the tools floating around to detect damaged partition blocks and work around them.
What procedure should I use to go from a stock GB (non-root) to ICS?
Specifically,
- is there a safe way to root GB (given the emmc damage already), so that I can flash the other ROM/kernels (below)
- what kernel should I use
- what ROM should I use
I would greatly appreciate any help on this. I have been eating humble pie for a week now, so I hope there is no more 'why didn't you pay attention' coming my way
Cheers

I currently have GB v2.3.5, (SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS) which works well, it would seem.
I'd love to get ICS back on it but need to gather info (such as that from yourself) before I do anything.
A bit more info on the state of the emmc storage: Using 'adb shell' and executing the command DD did in fact find bad blocks in partitions 9-11 (can't recall right now exactly which ones), so there are issues there.
The partition that is in place now, __appears__ to have successfully skipped those bad blocks.
And on something slightly tangential to the current topic, I know that doing a 'WIPE DATA' from the recovery menu zaps emmc, but does that also happen when you do a factory reset from within Android? From memory, when doing so, it seems to go into recovery mode and do it, so I'd expect that it'd also damage emmc.
Cheers

As opposed to all alarmist and contradictory posts about eMMC bug on stock Samsung ROM : GB or ICS, I never got any issues with this so called eMMC bug and never got bricked G-Note as long as I kept at using the stock kernel, nevertheless I made various and numerous wipe whichever the ways (from recovery or the settings)...
For rooting, I always used the temporary Touch CWM to flash (which has been may be removed from XDA, I guess as it was supposed to cause bricked devices) anything : superuser, busybox, and other custom ROM... ^^
BUT when I flash a custom ROM, I always removed the custom kernel (so called "safe"), and replace it for a stock kernel and never got issues with it.
The first and last time I flashed a custom with custom kernel I got my G-Note bricked (just forgot the replace the custom kernel for a stock one... ^^) !!!
So, if you want to flash an ICS version, get one from Sammobile, and flash it with PC Odin !
You shouldn't have any problem with them !!!
Get all root and busybox files from dr Ketan, and if you can find it again use the temporary Touch CWM which has NO kernel inside : it WORKS quite fine !!!

Unfortunately there are no high trees on XDA beause you should look for one before typing this utter personal nonsense that could brick anybody's Gnote.
Taking your own convictions for thruth is one thing, sending innocent ppl into the jungle is another...
What you are saying is: If there is a lightning storm, just go into an open field en enjoy. I cannot say it is 100% safe, but I never got struck....I think they removed the tree i used to seek shelter from the rain, but if you search real hard you might find it anyway.

Hi,
I was quite happily running ICS4.0.4 (rooted) when I decided to try a different ROM (and/or JB - can't even remember any more).
I have been eating humble pie for a week now, so I hope there is no more 'why didn't you pay attention' coming my way
Cheers

Actually you should be happy that they revived your Note after brick even if it's only running GB for now.
However if you are a brave person you can do the same trick on ICS.
Just read and understand the thread that is a guide on doing so.
You can root your GB without a problem, but there is no obligation for it to install ICS with odin.
However what you do need is the following (besides a lot of patience and courage) :
1. get the ICS files you want to flash including the pit file.
2. get a program called PIT MAGIC to recreate a suitable pit file
3. determine where your bad blocks are located
4. Load the pit file into the magic program and alter the stock pit file
with the values needed to ommit your bad emmc area
5. save it and then flash your note in odin with your newly created pit file and repartition ticked.
@OP: could you please check your internal storage capacity? Is it aroung 8GB?
Arobase we are not going to rediscuss this matter for another 556643 pages.
Just ask yourself : if there was no problem then why did samsung patch their JB kernels for it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34933643&postcount=683
Also nobody asks you to reconsider your own experience and beliefs, but the day someone follows your instructions and bricks his phone, are you going to pay for a new motherboard ?
I'll stop this discussion here, and just hope nobody will get struck under the tree.
