I was on stock, rooted 5.9.902 and was just prompted to Download and Install 5.9.905 OTA. I backed up root with Voodoo OTA Root Keeper, temp unrooted, downloaded and installed 5.9.905, let the phone reboot, then restored root using Voodoo OTA Root Keeper. All went smooth and am now on the official OTA with root. I noticed the addition of Google+ as a preinstalled app. I am assuming, however, that there is no difference between the 5.9.905 that was pulled from Motorola's servers a few weeks back.
Thanks I was wondering what I should do about the root. Went back to unsafe mode, unrooted with backup thanks to rootkeeper, and now I'm waiting for the update! Cheers.
You will need to remove safestrap and may even have to FXZ or fastboot your preinstall partition before the OTA will succeed.
that's what i was afraid of... can i just download the update and do it myself with safestrap installed? I'm not the complete expert so step by step instructions would be appreciated.
I will wait for the OTA notice. if I have to reroot and reeinstall Safestrap I will.

You don't have to remove Safestrap, or un-root as long as you haven't removed any bloatware apps. They can be frozen in TB and it will install. You will lose root, I used Motofail to re-root, then you will have to rerun the install for safestrap recovery. 15 minutes and your good to go.
Agreed. I just removed safe strap, didn't bother to unroot. Tried to force the update repeatedly with no luck. So i took it from the Phandroid news link. Flashed in stock recovery. Kept root (used for3ver root to root I months and months ago). Reinstalled safe strap, then switched back to my safe side which was DroidTheory's ICS, but now with a better radio now. Radio synced immediately...whereas normally it takes a minute or two. Loving this update.

hey just fyi if you flashed it back to 902 stock and took the update you can use the 902 one click root to reroot, i just tried it
Still rooted
I just let the 5.9.905 ota run this morning on my rooted Bionic. No unroot, no backup, or nuthin. I know, not the wisest thing to do but hey, I was caffeine deficient and spoiling for a fight Anyway after the reboot:
Root check shows it's still rooted.
Opened a shell on the handset with Terminal Explorer and successfully su.
Opened an adb shell and successfully su.
I haven't had a chance to explore what's changed yet, but I did notice that Google+ is no longer un-installable.
I might be the exception, but it appears that the ota doesn't affect root on a previously rooted handset. All seems good in my little piece of the world.
Every time I try to update, it says I need a valid Motorola account. I'm on stock, but have done many customizations to it, along with the webtop. I know how to get back to plain stock, just haven't felt like doing it yet. I suppose at some point I will have to when we finally get ICS.
the funny part is that I never had any issues with my data connection until 905 came around, but I have been having them for the past 2 weeks or so.

Non-rooted Bionic constantly trying to download 5.9.905
The past few days my Bionic has been constantly trying to download an update. I came online to investigate the reason and found that 5.9.905 just got released. The download symbol has been in the notification bar all day for the last few days and the battery is always dead when I wake up.
I have looked online to try to update manually but all the filenames of the 5.9.905 download links are actually labeled Blur_Version.5.9.902.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip. Link this one here at xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297714&page=40. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
The filename is in regards to the version over which it can install.
You just have to download one from may or later, I believe. Pick a page that says it's the 905 update, download the zip file with 902 in the name, put it on your external sd card, and reboot into stock recovery (I use adb reboot recovery), press both volume buttons in, then "install zip from sdcard" use power button to select. go down to the zip file we just put on the sdcard, hit the power button and BING BANG BOOM 905!
Re: Non-rooted Bionic constantly trying to download 5.9.905
Thanks, 5thAgent. I'll give it a try.

I went back to stock from liberty so i could install the official update. In the process of installing the update, i lost root. Am i able to reroot or am I stuck for the time being. I know i should have used the forever root, but i didn't. I just want to know if I'm able to root again or am i stuck for the time being. I really hope i can but if i cant, i will live with it.

same here. I went from Shift3r to stock, flashed the update, lost root, now can't seem to re-root.
Yes, most ppl are reporting that it works - you may have to yr twice, and after the phone rebooted the first time after applying the update, it's not a bad idea to reboot it again manually before starting anything.
So I definitely forever rooted before applying the update and lost root after the update as well... I really hope that I don't have to flash back to re-root and then take the update again...
Lost root
I was on stock 886, rooted. I flashed forever root and updated, but still lost root. Then I flashed back to 886 and now I can't seem to re-root. Rawr!
root is possible after update
follow "dfib"s manual method to get root back:
copy and paste: androidforums.com/bionic-all-things-root/460668-can-i-re-root-after-5-8-894-broke-root.html[/url]
I had a never rooted droid bionic that received the OTA update and try to get root with Pete's Motorola Root Tools and R3l3AS3DRoot and both failed multiple times so i tried the manual method to gain root and it worked!
-as always make sure you run command prompt as "admin"
-and highlight code to make sure you include all "spaces" (some are hard to see)
-when extracting exploit.zip extract to desktop
happy rooting
Yep, I followed dfib's instructions (although credit goes to P3) and it worked perfectly!
Will Pete's unroot work or will you have to manually unroot?
Thanks. I was really upset the first time i lost my data network after installing the update that was supposed to fix that and was the only reason i installed it.

Yeah I still lost my network as well after update. I always had HTC phones prior to this. Next year I'm diching the Motorola junk and going back to HTC. I never had issues with HTC whether it was Windows Mobile or Android.

This worked! XDA Forum is just the most awesome of all times. I reopened my Titanium and it prompted the superuser for me to grant access. I'm rooted again!
Says my SU Binary is out of date in Superuser, and force closes when trying to update the SU Binary. When I try to update Superuser, it says the signature doesn't match. And SU Update Fixer keeps failing. Is there another way that I can update the Superuser.
Update:
Tried the process again, and this time, I cannot get past "./zerg". Says cannot copy boomsh permission denied.
Root Check says I am rooted though. I think the Superuser is the problem
Second Update: For whatever reason, after doing the above, R3L3AS3DRoot worked and got me rooted and Superuser working properly. It pushed the sytem back to before I updated also.
I got the Bionic on Tuesday and one of the first things it asked me to do was an ota update. 893. I tried rooting at that point and couldn't. I just proceeded to upgrade to. 901. Now i ask can i still root or do i need to roll back first? Is it even possible?

use the bionic path saver it will roll you back 886 root you and push 893 and 901 to your phone. you do not have to install 901. after you flash 893 root and forever root the make sure forever root keeps after a reboot. using root explorer go to system/bin/mount.ext.sh or something like that and make sure you have 3 lines at the bottom that start with chmod 4755. if they are there then install 901
I've also tried the path saver, and after installing 901 I still lose root. I also tried installing 893, rebooting, noticing that I kept root, and then after running the 901 update I lost root again.
Edit: GOT IT! I used the pathsaver to restore to 893 and then I used ROTA893 to root and the r3l3as3d tool to forever root. now I'm on rooted 901! Thanks guys

pathsave then rota893.. good to go to 901 with root.

do I have to go through this whole process again?

I also had a hell of a fiasco when I tried to upgrade liberty rom to .901. Took me half a day at work to get my phone back up and working again. I'm at .901 stock unrooted and I think I'll stay here for a while. Gun shy at this point.

I am running 901 unrooted temporarily as well until a new exploit is available. The path saver did root the previous build for me but the second I pushed the 901 update root was lost.

By exploit are you referring to the path saver? I am not very familiar with Macs and what files they are able to run but if I had to wager a guess I would say no. Perhaps via bootcamp though.
This may sound dumb and noobish but I have an idea I would like to put out there. Is it possible to look at the code from Motorola's update files and copy said signature into the superuser file? This, in theory, would fool the phones factory recovery into installing the file and thus rooting the device.
Just brainstorming here
Hey all.
I've tried to perform the recent OTA update that came out last month, but have been unsuccessful. I had at one point uninstalled much of the bloatware that came with my Bionic, but I believe I've reinstalled them. I unfreeze everything on my phone, I have used both the Voodoo temp unroot and the Superuser temp unroot and OTA survival, but no dice. i'm not sure where to go from here. maybe unroot completely with Pete's root tools, but I would like that to be a last resort if possible.
Only way the OTA will take is if all stock bloatware is there and no apps are frozen. If you did not make a stock nano back up before making all those changes then you will need to rsd the phone back to stock. I have my wife's phone rooted and debloated flashed it to .902 and took the OTA .905 with no issues.
What is the exact error you are getting and how are you applying the OTA? Usually if you apply the OTA manually it'll give you an error specific to why it won't install. As stated above you need to make sure you're fully stock or the OTA will fail. It does check for root. Mine failed too even with Voodoo unroot. It would keep detecting that the file was incorrect. I had to manually go into file manager and modify the root file which fixed my problem with OTA not installing. You may need to go and do a FXZ to get back to full stock.
So I've been searching through the forums for last several hours trying to figure out the best solution to my needs with relatively little luck. I'm currently running Safe Strap 1.07 on Android 2.3.4. Ultimately, I'd like to be running latest version of safe strap (3.11) along with the latest OTA on my unsafe system.
When I boot to the unsafe system it lets me download the OTA, but attempting to install the OTA always fails. Do I have have to completely reset my phone to factory via RSDLite or is there another way?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

What version of software do you currently have? The OTA isn't supposed to push until tomorrow(04/15).
If you have any stock apps frozen you'll need to thaw them out. If you've deleted them you'll need to do a FXZ to get back to stock.
You won't get the OTA to JB unless you are on ICS. Google "House of Bionic" for the best support to get you where you want to be.

I just updated my unsafe system to 5.9.905. How do i go about getting it to the latest version?
Its been awhile but if memory serves that's the last update before you go to ICS then JB. Are you rooted? Have you tried downloading the update yet? What have you tried etc?

Go to unsafe side, and uninstall ss from within ss app. Then uninstall app.
Use Samurai's HOB to get to ICS, and obtain root.
Update SU binaries
Backup root with VOODOO OTA Rootkeeper and Temp Unroot.
Go into "system settings" -> "about phone" - > check for updates.
If the update is available, let it update your phone, then use voodoo to hopefully restore root.
I haven't taken the OTA, as I am very happy on CM 10.1, and have no interest in being stuck on stock. So I don't know if you can keep root, but if you want to get JB, and try to keep root, IMO this is your best bet.

Worked!
This worked like a charm. My phone is currently on JB and rooted! Note, if it's not letting you get the OTA, just download it from somewhere else and place it in your SDCard. Then boot into stock recovery (volume up and down, select recovery, and hit volume up and down together again), then select update.zip and find your update.
Now I only have 1 more question...when I FXZ'd I forgot to uninstall safestrap from within the app. I believe this isn't a big deal since FXZ wipes everything. However, I am worried that this may cause issues when installing safestrap again.
Also, I only had safestrap 1.07 before I did this all. Does anyone know if a roms I've backed up with safestrap 1.07 will still be flashable in safestrap 3.11? I just really want to avoid bricking my phone because if I have to FXZ again I will loose root.
Thanks!

The post by herrsmoothe.
The short version:
Use "House of Bionic" (requires 3 large files on PC and USB cord) to update your GB to ICS (should not lose any data if you do it right)
Root
install Voodoo's Root Keeper
When ready, do the OTA JB update
Then swap the file back to keep the root (see the above instructions)
Voila, rooted JB OTA.
I think I might have painted myself into a corner on this one. I got my phone rooted on ICS & have been loving it. I used TitaniumBackup+ to do a full system backup and then proceeded to nuke the bulk of Verizons apps. All was well. Now, the Jellybean update is out. The OTA update hasn't hit my phone yet. So I went and downloaded the official build. It turns out the upgrade won't run without the missing Verizon apps. So I went to my backup folder & lo and behold: they didn't get backed up.
My fear is that the OTA update just hasn't made it to me yet & will also fail because those applications are missing. Right now, it's stuck on BackupAssistantClient.
Someone suggested I go and get gapps, but that won't install either.
Does anyone know where I can find copies of those apps or am I just SOL? It's not TOTALLY awful. It just means I have to wait until November for my contract to be up.
Thank you in advance!
Google "House of Bionic" read all insructions, download program, and use it to FXZ back to stock ICS with all the apps then you'll be good to go.
It should be nice and simple in your situation.
1. Use RSDLite plus the 6.7.246 FXZ file to put the phone all the way to stock.
2. Get root on ICS and then install OTA Rootkeeper. Make sure that the only things you do are root and install OTA rootkeeper.
3. Use Stock Recovery to apply the JB update. Check for root, which should hopefully have stayed.
All should be well after that. I've done some reading but I'm not 100% sure if it's safe to downgrade flash back to ICS after you take the JB OTA.
The House Of Bionic works perfectly! I did lose root though. I used the Voodoo app to back it up, but for some reason it just didn't protect it. I'm ok with it for now as I was more interested in JB than having root. All I really used root for was to get rid of the bloatware in the first place.

STOP!
Use HoB to root as well. In the main menu, it is under utilities. THEN update the superuser binaries and use Voodoo to save root.
Then you should be able to run the update from the stock recovery and restore root when you reboot.
No need to keep the annoying bloatware! Or once updated you can add Safestrap and try out some of the cool JB ROMs.
