Got the chance to play with the blackberry playbook and this thing is amazingly fast almost as fast as ipad2. Multitasking is mind boggling i tried running 4 hd videos simultaneously and never had a single hickup. I love the interface a lot better than an ipad and android. Hulu works in the browser as its a full web browsing experience. The lcd screen is as good as the ipad if not better as the color is more saturated the only downside is the fewer apps available. The dual core texas instrument 1ghz processor with parallel multitasking does makes the difference its so much fun to use.

Curious, how does one run 4 HD videos at once?
Seems okay but still think I will opt out for the ipad2 just cause its more well put together tablet and it just works. Like the fact you will be able to run some android apps on it, don't like the fact that you MUST have an blackberry(with the bb data plan) to fully use the tablet at times.

I got the first gen iPad but the lack of full web functionality turned me off after a while. Not being able to view... practically half of the internet because of the lack of flash was a big thing for me. That and the fact that, while it's a great machine and great for what it does, it's kind of limited in what all it can really do.
iOS is boring; to me anyway. And after the initial magic and shine wore off... there was really nothing interesting to do with the device.
Yeah I think I am on the same boat. Ios is very limited. Looking into getting the playbook this weekend.

If anyone is looking for a tower defense game with a twist I suggest checking out Lonely Turret for the Blackberry Playbook (I know the dev ). I've tried the game out on a simulator and became addicted quickly - looking forward to trying it out on the actual playbook myself. But definitely give it a look if you have a playbook and want a good game.
Intesting. I had only heard bad things about the device until now. I wonder if they'll backpedal on the whole "you need a BB phone" fiasco. It really makes no ****ing sense.

I don't think they'll quite go back on it; doing so would look bad for the company and show Co dimers a big feature they worked hard on just to To can in the end.

So, coming from Blackberry World and posting from my Playbook, RIM has definitively said the Bridge requirement will be gone by mid June. The standalone PIM apps were demo'd multiple times. And, of course, a Sprint LTE version is coming then as well.
No specific date on the Android player yet, although it was demo'd live as well. The Android apps that were shown were brought over without assistance from the original devs and no source required. It's just a repackage of the apk.
This hardware is fantastic and QNX is blazing fast.
Yeah I really like the look of this tablet. Also all of the things that are flaws with it atm, seem to be getting ironed out by RIM soon. The intuitive way RIM have even done the controls for the Android player are awesome. The only thing I'd say is they could have brought it out in a 7" and 10" model just for choice as if you're really looking for compact, you could pickup the 7" but if you're looking at buying it for the media aspect you could just buy the 10". But it's RIM's first tablet so I can see why they only brought out the one size... Now to start saving.
Oh yeah I'm also wondering how RIM are going to handle the updating of Android apps. It would be cool if there was a program made that would convert the apk's to what ever file type is needed for the QNX OS.
Oh and of course, what hacking (if any) is going to be like. All to look forward to.

A 10" version is planned. Expect it before the end of the calendar year.
Also, the .bar file format on the Playbook is not much different from a .apk file. It is just a compressed file with some metadata. All the developer has to do is unzip and rezip their current release essentially. I am sure there is a tool in the SDK for developers to rezip their app.
I would imagine it won't be long before an after the fact tool is available to users so they can take an apk from their phone and turn it into a bar file.

Do you know when QNX will be showing up on the smartphones ? I heard OS 7 will be mixed with it ( QNX ).
The Playbook definitely looks tempting, too bad you can't get it here in Australia plus the lack of a 10 incher now means I'm looking for a transformer

Well that's really good to hear. The sadly I haven't had any time to spend with the tablet itself but from what I have seen it looks like a great product.
The next time I'm around a best buy ill definitely drop by and take a look.

Mine showed up totally unexpected yesterday. It's fast and different. Rooting is done by a switch near the battery. Comes with 100 mb (verizon) free for 2 years. However, got it working with AT&T today.
Would love it to be compatible with Android apps, however, it can be dual booted with Android or most any other OS.

You got an actual chromebook?! I'm assuming not a CR-48 as that was all supposed to be done ... and I keep hearing June 15th or whenever for the official ones ... ?
I'm exited to get my hands on one. I love my little CR-48 but it can be as slow as an old dog. The latest updates have really helped though, I notice the time it takes to reconnect to WiFi after sleep has been cut in half, if not more. I just think the single core kind of holds it back for the most part. Not a whole lot of difference from some of the newer specs I had seen, but apparently they are quite speedy. A dual core will do that, considering the OS itself is so lite - such a minor bump would obviously result in a pretty drastic performance boost.
The update with a more 'official' file manager and media playback was nice to see, if not late.
I'll never be pulled from my desktop, or even more proper notebooks, but the Chrome OS angle is definitely a neat and handy one at that. In terms of practicality, some things just aren't the same / comparable.
And I think the cloud term sort of swings people for a loop ... the cloud is essentially the internet. Obviously. I just think the term results in people over-thinking it. When you explain it like that people seem to 'get it' more.
As best as I can tell it's the CR-48. It has a codename of Mario. Non branded.
Cloud computing is a different paradigm than traditional. However with Dropbox, box.net and Sky drive, I have about 40gb of storage available.
There are some interesting sites on the web about Chromebook. The facinating (but somewhat confusing) thing about the entire concept is the lack of a "desktop". Running everything from a browser is clunky.
I am going to re-check my CB to see what it's packed with.
I was pleased that I can use my AT&T sim and that I am not married the Verizon. Would love to use as a phone... better yet, will be trying to dual boot Android to use the apps available.

Yeah sounds like a CR-48. Lucky guy, heard they ended shipment a while ago. I love the look of the unbranded notebook myself, totally sleek and totally sexy.
Finding workarounds for most tasks can be a little overwhelming, but once you spend some time looking around you get some good suggestions from people on what may be a good method / alternative.
I like the idea myself, a lite and speedy OS that doesn't require 'protection,' fast boots and returns from sleep at an amazing rate and also not having all sorts of **** shoved down your throat.
It's obviously not going to be a legitimate replacement for all, but as a secondary notebook it can hold its own. And for those that have netbooks for simple and not so demanding tasks, this could easily replace their devices. 'Cloud computing' isn't as complicated, or daunting, as some want to make it out to be.
Just another option for the people, and something I could see being pretty successful for a select group / market share.

AOKP got this request recently.
Seems a Cornerstone build would be the only way out...which is unlikely.
I'm fully aware this would probably be quite difficult to port, and likely quite time consuming.
Having said that, I also want this. It makes so much more sense on a 7 inch tablet then a 5 inch whatever.
This works with a handful of Google Apps, no other apps. I don't see the point.

Running 2 apps at the same time. Seems like a great idea to me. It supports a limited amount of apps, but unlike Galaxy Note 10.1, you could probably hack in other apps to work.

Yes, but the Galaxy Note 2 supports all apps in multi-window mode...
This would be *nice* to have but I don't know how much easier it would be then to just multitasking between 2 apps now and having the apps full screen. I can see some of the benefits like watching a youtube video while chatting on Google Talk. There are some good alternatives such as popup video players and notepads that overlay on top of current app and typically are resizable and movable.
While it makes sense this would be better on a 7" then a 5"... it really would be best on a 10". 7" barely gives me enough breathing room for 1 app. Plus most of the "compatible apps" are simple things like a calculator and notes
Well it seems VERY useful to me.
It's better than popup apps in my opinion - more app options.
Overscreen browser is a great alternative for now

No, it's not.
This allows multiple apps to run side by side, Overskreen is just the browser. Also, it's not even compatible with Jelly Bean, so no one who owns a Nexus 7 can use it.

No, as I said, handful of specific Google apps. Read up on it. Will the list grow? Maybe? I'd have to guess it is a sdk used to support the function, is it worth app dev time to do it and possibly maintain multiple versions of their app?

Now for the bubble burst. The reason they work on the galaxy note is the new QUAD Core cpu and 2 GB Very fast ram .. samsung tried to release a less ram/power version of the 10.1 note with a higer res display. they backed the display down and increased the cpu//ram. this is also to support the WACOM S PEN..
I have been reading alot about the device because mine will be here Monday. So the above if from my reading and research. I can update you more mid next week.. I do not see a need for split windows on a 7 inch screen .. get the overscreen browser and try it.. JUST Does not work for productive work...

Dude. Overskreen DOES NOT work on Jelly Bean. And it is just one app, vs an entire suite of Google Apps.
Also there's no need for window management.
Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor too, just less RAM - which isn't even a problem, it still can handle side by side apps.
And you're telling some weird stuff here. We are talking about Galaxy Note 2, which allows more apps, and works better. AND it works on a 5 inch screen, so it'll be awesome on a seven inch.
So yeah, please don't come back with your 'research' to tell us that you think that this feature is unnecessary.

While i would love to have or port this it simply isnt possible, it requires a lot of changing to the frameworks and it would be hard to decompile all of samsungs sources and extract it.

Stock android not, but there are a few roms with cornerstone, i think mainly on 10 inch tablets.
Web os did this kinda on a dual core wish android would absorb that multitasking feature right now running multiple apps kinda is a hit and miss

Since updating to 4.2, my screen brightness keeps going up and down from moment to moment, things generally run a bit slower, the lock screen is buggy and Quickoffice can no longer save changes to files. Not exactly a forward step.

Google released a bad update, I don't know why people yell at others for being upset. We didn't see threads like this at all for 4.11 or 4.12. Its obvious that Google obviously needs to work on this as people don't post threads like this for no reason.

If it was really a bad update, why doesn't it affect everyone? I have a stock locked tablet, and simply flashed Google's factory image.. No issue whatsoever!

I have almost only good experiences with the 4.2, generally feel more stable and haven't noticed any sluggish behaviour. Only problem Im having is with bluetooth, it won't remember profile selections for my paired devices. So everytime I connect to my phone for internet access I need to go and tick internet access under profiles

The majority of people come here for solid technical advice, and some of this discussion hardly inspires confidence. We also need confidence in Google as we have invested in their product and it is perfectly legitimate to raise concerns about the 4.2 update that they pushed to our devices
If you use Bluetooth, for example to tether, then you will have been thrown by the changes to the interface. It was not obvious how to connect, and is actually quite inconsistent in that clicking the device name disconnects which is different to what's needed to connect.
One of the advantages the Nexus has over the Mini is the 16:10 screen great for widescreen movies. It's no surprise then that loss of USB mount (a feature available when many of us decided to buy the Nexus) has hit us hard. Yes there is a paid App which might allow movie streaming but I use the USB to extend storage for the huge game files we must download and so this is a major loss.

On a serious note. I am yet to face any problems with 4.2. I like it alot. Battery life is great, keyboard is great and quick settings i love.

Screen brightness is an isolated issue I suspect not caused directly by Android, as most people don't see it.
Everything runs just as fast as 4.1.
Quick Office has a coding problem, not Android.

I have only seen 1 real bug in 4.2 and that's the missing December bug.

It is most certainly NOT as fast for me, just because it is ok on your device please don't assume everyone else's is the same!
I actually love 4.2. A little lag here and there, but I owned a Huawei Ascend with like a 500 mHz processor, a Samsung Sidekick 4G with a 1 gHz processor, and a Kindle fire. Seriously Google isn't perfect (but they are damn close) they released an update you don't like, does that mean you should cry and hit the new thread button? No, it means you should just flash 4.1.2 and save server space. Especially when there are 100 other topics exactly as useless as yours. We don't need more of them.

Has nothing to do with Prism, the heuristics on the backlight seems to allow it to ramp up and down faster than it did before. In fact before the N7 seemed to be very stubborn to change levels, now it's a little too fast perhaps.
No matter what version or ROM I'm using I don't use automatic brightness. I use the lowest setting and adjust when I need to.

Hating it and loving it ? - wow these are strong words for an OS. Just like W8 people just can't work out whether its the cool thing to be for it or against it yet even though there's no need to take sides or feel possessive about it - we're all here just users equally dependant upon the working of Google aren't we?
One sure thing though - bugs will iron out but things like the way Bluetooth works now and the loss of USB mount are major hits for those of use dependant on those features for the last 4 months.
USB mounting was never part of 4.1... why are people suggesting it was? You needed root and stickmount or a custom ROM.
Stickmount will update eventually. Stop blaming Google for breaking something they never supported in the first place.

Cant comment on adb or alike as I use my windows 7 machine for that. But still dislike the 8.1 start button, I just use the start 8 app.
Well any problems about connection with your HTC ONE were resolved with the Android 4.3 update. Been running 8.1 for a while now, and i can barely tell between the previous version. Except for some shortcuts that are much easier to open now on 8.1. I also like how updating your apps is much easier and faster. Now you can set default apps for things like the Web browser, e-mail client, music player, video player, photo viewer, calendar provider, and map address which i thought were very useful. Also now you can disable hot corners.
Honestly, if you could get it for free its worth it...but not if you had to pay extra $$$
Is this literally happening tomorrow? Can't wait. I'm looking forward to the free upgrade.

Well, they announced that it is a free upgrade for all current Windows 8 users, so I will probably go for it, especially if it doesn't effect my ability to connect to my One.

I had a bunch of issues with 8.1
Printers (only hp) would not stay connected. Was unable to see other computers on network. I kept it at home but had to go back to 8 at work.
Twain drivers would not load either. I am waiting some time before going back to 8.1 for now.
Got mine installed. So far, so good. I haven't done anything with my phone, so I don't know if the tools will work in that regard. But it's running nice on my archaic Dell Inspiron 1545.
Got a Satellite L505D series lappy and am awaiting the installation of updates for 8 to see how it fares on it. I had a copy of 8 for my Quad Core AMD APU that ran amazing and this DC Athlon X2 64 ran well on Vista and 7 but haven't had much time with 8 at all. Soon upgrading to Turion X2 64 ZM-86,87 or 88(Haven't Decided Yet). Will update how well 8 and 8.1 runs on a 5 tear old Dual Core processor in a little.

Funny thing is I have been trying to install it all day, it downloaded to about 55-60%, then hung. I guess the tech gods want me to stay on 8 for now...

Only issue I have had is their Virus Auto Scan from Defender scanning. It could be all of the updates from WinUp but why would you go ahead and scan all of that with Defender since it is coming from MS AND it is already the slowest update system around lol

Idk why a lot of people have been hating on windows 8, I love it.
A lot of people hate on it because it is such a drastic change from what we are used to. Yes, people understand that they can rid the OS of a lot of Tue MetroUI but people don't want that. They want something that is going to be what they want without any manual altaring. For example, people will always prefer purchasing a laptop from a Big Box Store versus building their own due to being convenient that things are all set and ready to go.

I too came from the 8.1 preview, I just had to re-install everything. The only thing that bugs me is that the drivers for adb will not recognize. Other than that, its not to bad.
8.1 broke so many things for me trying to revert back to 8 right now with restore
