Hello. I Completely switched to GO sms and GO launcher pro, so I was wondering if I could freeze the messaging app and the adw app. If so, which messaging app do i freeze? There's two and i dont want to mess with any settings.
/system/app/mms.apk <-- stock messaging apk if you freeze won't be able to send picture messages but sms will still send. Better alternative is just disable any notifications.
/system/app/vzwsms.apk <-- don't freeze this or can't send anything
/system/app/org.adw.launcher-1.apk <-- adw launcher

I think it's the other way around that you can't receive mms but you can send. Least that was my problem when I did.
Turn off notifications
Can't you just go into the stock messaging app and turn off notifications? It sounds to me like that's what you want, but I may be wrong
Go SMS had an option to handle sol SMS/mms functions if the stock SMS app is uninstalled. Idk how good it works. Gosms also should disable stock notifications.
Honestly, you could uninstall adw. Just don't do a fact reset. You'll have no launcher. Iirc.

ever since i started using Hancent SMS, my Default Messaging app doesnt show threads/messages, even when i compose one from the Messaging app, how do i fix this?
stop using hancent sms! Nah... I'm just kidding.
Check with developer (you should be able to get en email either from the app itself or from the market). It could be a known bug or an undocumented feature of the app.
Good luck
im still having this problem. When i open handcent SMS i have like 50 threads of messages, but when i open default Messaging, it doesnt show any, just Compose New Message.....whats goin on?

Just out of curiousity....
Handcent is a default sms/mms replacement application, so why the love affair with the default app? I'm thinking its probably meant to use one or the other, not both. Perhaps once Handcent is installed, it routes everything in the mmssms.db file over to its directory and when its uninstalled it reverts back. Just a thought, of course, it doesn't really help you.
i wanted to start using it since Ted themed it to look more like Hero MMS, i use backuo for root users, so i backed up SMS/MMS and uninstalled Handcent, and then restored SMS.MMS but still wouldnt show up in MMS app

Did you reboot after the restore? You could also try pushing the backed up mmssms.db file from the backup for root users folder directly to the default messaging app's database folder, reboot and see if that works. The default messaging app folder is located here:
Code:
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
i tried that and still nothing, also when i unistalled Handcent, i went into Messaging and tried to send message to myself, and never recieved it, same when i sent myself message from friends phone, somethings not right

I just rooted/cyan'ed my phone and when reinstalling handscent sms I found that both handscent and stock sms notify. I solved this before by uninstalling messaging, but with cyanogen/donut 1.6 doesn't give me the option.
Does anyone know what I can do to disable stock messaging or manually uninstall it.
at all threads in messaging >menu>settings>uncheck "notifications"
Ahhhh...I'm a genious, thankyou!!!!
I have the EVO and I uncehcked notifications and set Handset to auto recieve and mine were still coming to my main one. I just deleted the message icon on my home screen and replaced it with Handscent. I'm only getting one notification but the message was still going to my HTC message one. But it's ok since I replaced the Handscent SMS icon with the messaging one. Handscent is cute.

I have the same problem with the Droid Eris. The screens shots that Hanscent sends are not the same as the phone, when trying to disable the Droid messaging software vs. Handscent. Does anyone know how to disable the Droid messaging software?? I would be more than willing to pay someone who can set up my phone correctly. I live 10 mins. south of LAX in L.A.
Whenever I get a message using Handcent I also get a duplicate message in my stock msgr. How do I disable this? I have Handcent set as my default msngr.
have you tried going into stock app then
menu > settings > auto retrieve > off ?
might only apply to MMS tho and not regular SMS...if that doesn't work, dunno
On the stock msgr, you go into settings and turn off the notifications under settings, like sound, vibrate etc.
if you are rooted and wanna use handcent sms.. rather than the default then just use root explorer go to system/apps then delete the mms.apk

How can I get the native mms to stop popping up with handcent mms? I've tried disabling auto retrieve along with removing the mms.apk, but it still pops up.
Any idea on how to make sure the native mms doesn't popup when receiving a new message?
default messaging application > settings >In the notifications settings , uncheck the notification bar.

Be careful with that, you will most likely kill mms, unless one of the recent handcent updates has changed something.

+1
I remember reading that deleting important apk's like that via root explorer can be dangerous. If you decide to delete it that way, make a nand backup first.

I've been using handcent for quite some time now. I simply go into the stock SMS application and turn absolutely everything off, including auto-retrieve, notification sounds, notification vibrate, etc.
My settings are backed up through Titanium Backup, so when I flash a new ROM, I just re-apply the backup of the settings. Works wonderfully for me.

Tried this, but then I can't get MMS (messages with photo attachments). Everything else works, but MMS stops working.
To begin with, I am only getting messages duplicated when they come through a gateway such as [email protected]. The ones that come direct from other people are usually fine and I get only 1. I've searched and searched for the answer for this and can't seem to find it.
Does handcent load super slow for you guys. Had to stop using because of that.

ok I am having the worst luck with TINY problems on this D4. so I was having a problem where blurcontactsync was causing my contacts to crash if I tried to use them, I found a simple fix to rename the apk to .bak, and it worked
Now I noticed that when I get a text message I do not receive any kind of notification. No smiling message in the notification bar, no notification tone, no vibrate. I have gone into text message settings and set the tone, I have gone into general settings and set the tone. I even went into titainium backup and froze "Messaging, and Universal Inbox" because I thought they might be interfering just like the blur contacts sync. no luck Still do not receive any kind of indication not even the LED flashing.
all my other notifications work fine, if I get an email, or a missed call I get a notification tone and a flashing green light....I extensively searched XDA and people were having this problem with the droid X but it was some kind of update bug and was fixed with a new patch....anyone have any ideas what I could do to get my notifications working again??
Hmm I can't replicate this problem on mine but do you use the stock text messaging app? Try a third party texting app like Handcent and then send a test to yourself from text.vzw.com and see if you get the notification.

yea I'm currently using the stock app I was hoping to avoid a 3rd party app but I guess Im going to dive into that. I can just freeze my stock msg app right?

I wouldn't freeze the stock messaging app, I believe that's still necessary even with a 3rd party app (speaking of, I highly recommend GoSMS, but have also been happy with Handcent in the past).
I remember seeing over on DroidForums.net that someone froze their stock messaging app and wasn't receiving any texts after that. Give it a shot but if you don't get any texts for a while I'd unfreeze
Like the title says i'm using Chomp SMS as my default SMS app and it works great. However, the stock messaging app notification won't go away, even if i open the app. I'm on 4.4 rooted t-mobile if it matters.
Thanks

if you open the stock messaging app and set it back as the default msg app then open settings and uncheck the notification box then check all the msg in the stock app to make sure it goes away.
then back in chomp set it as default again and everything should be OK if you are still having issues then you can try freezing the stock MSG app with titanium Backup and that should def stop it.
I have a Sprint Moto x and i froze the stock msg app and it has not caused any issues receiving msg's so it should not on yours.
hope that fixes your issue
