Hey guys (and girls but i dont think that there are many present^^)
As far as i know you should NEVER do a full wipe with the CF-Kernel on an ICS Rom.
But: Is it safe to do a full wipe on a GB ROM with cf-kernel?
Thx for your help!
* You can do, just flash the kernel + 4.0 Abysnote every time you want to do a backup or restore. This is also the safe way to restore a backup nandroid Gingerbread, after you have finished playing with ICS. There are some caveats, if you do a backup of ICS and forget to reflash the kernel ICS, we will try to boot with a kernel ICS Abyss .... method,1
- reflashed CWM,: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26212001&postcount=2203...- flashed AbyssNote 4.2 kernel - reboot recovery - flashed checkrom v6 - full wipe. method,2_ PC Odin is the only 100% safe way to install a fresh kernel.
And that's the other BIG problem with this guide - why is it telling a user to go from a dangerous kernel to YET ANOTHER dangerous kernel (XXLPY-based?)
The safest way to get away from ICS is: Use PC Odin or Heimdall to flash a safe Gingerbread kernel with working CWM (NOT a full firmware package, and DO NOT mess with repartitioning), such as a Gingerbread CF-Root release. From there you can wipe and then flash whatever you want.
To be clear - JUST flash a safe kernel and then wipe/flash using that - don't flash anything else in PC Odin. If the full firmware package you flash has bootloaders it could hose you.

I've searched the entire forum and Google as well, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24656901 should provide the best explanation on how to revert back to GB.
However, in that thread, he mentioned that I need to flash abyss 4.0+ kernel first before restoring the backup. How about if the backup file is corrupted for some reason, are there any alternatives to revert back?
Also, if my phone was bricked one day(assume I can enter downloadmode but not CWM, which means I can't flash the abyss 4.0+ kernel), can I use the USB jig and flash the ics leak according to Dr Ketan's guide?

Yes. Download any custom GB rom to your PC (Darky, Cassie's XL, whatever), pull your SD card out, slot it in SD Card reader, transfer the GB rom from your PC to your SD card. Put the card back into your phone.
Boot into CWMR, flash Abyss, reload Recovery to get the Redpill one.
Do your wipes (data, cache, dalvik).
Tap 'install zip from SD card', navigate to your GB rom, and flash.
Reboot when the flash is done.
Pour yourself a stiff drink.

I wouldn't recommend that. I'd flash a rootable stock Rom via PC Odin, root it, flash the 1st ICS repack and flash the ICS rom of your choice. It's safer this way.

However in that situation I got a bricked phone with other kernel not Abyss Kernel.
People just emphasize flashing Abyss Kernel b4 reverting to GB, is that really viable to flash stock GB rom via pc odin?

If soft bricked (you can just reach the Download mode, not the Recovery), flashing Abyss is out, because you have no recovery to flash it from.
The only way to get yourself out of the sticky situation without triggering the binary counter and getting the triangle is the PC Odin and stock Rom. That way your binary counter stays at NO (meaning 0).
Hey guys, hope you guys can help me answer my question.
I always am not able to update any rom via the zip file.
For example i am now on Ice cream sandwich Kingdroid. I want to flash abyss kernal but it hang in the recovery saying updating files.
My only way of changing roms is to use ODIN to downgrade to factory gingerbread and go back up again to any rom i wish to use.
This happen with any rom, liquid or anything, i just can't flash any rom in CWM.
Is my phone partially brick from fullwiping on a icecream kernal previously?
I don't think so, you should flash stock GB rom with Odin (the rom must have 4 files, PIT, CODE (PDA), CSC and Modem (PHONE).
You must enable "repartition" on Odin.
After that your Note will be like out from factory.
I think you are not fully rooted, flash franco kernel and from franco recovery flash abyss kernel and then do full wipe and then install any custom rom and see wether you are fully rooted????
Hi guys,
I have been on Stunner ICS for past few months. Every thing is well and fine except the feeling that I don't use recovery anymore because of a fear of potential brick.
Now that CM 9 seems to have matured well, I want to switch to it and get back my freedom with using custom recovery.
Is there a safe way to do it?
I'm thinking on the lines of...
1. Titanium backup of non OS apps.
2. Desktop Odin and flash a rooted stock GB ROM.
3. Now proceed on standard procedure to install CM9 from GB.
Are the above steps riskfree or is there still some risk of hardbrick in this procedure?
Will I be completely free of hardbrick once I complete desktop Odin step?
I really don't want a brick... So guys please advice Whether I can go ahead, or should I stay put..
PS: did any members report hardbricks during desktop Odin process while flashing on effected kernels?

Here's how I do it.
You should first take a Nandroid backup of your stunner setup, should you want to come back to it (I did). Use the stunner kernel (LP6) to do it, no issues. To restore it, flash abyssNote kernel 4.2 with Redpill recovery via mobile Odin (or PC odin) and restore.
To flash CM9, just flash the CM9 kernel (which is safe) via mobile odin, reboot into recovery and flash from there.
I've attached both the kernels for you. Note that I don't have a tar for abyssnote kernel, so you'll have to extract the zimage from within the zip and flash using mobile Odin. The CM9 kernel tar file can be used on both mobile and desktop odin.
The only thing you need to be cautious about is to NOT do a WIPE/RESTORE from LP5/6/any leaked ICS kernel.
Also, the method I've outlined doesn't need you to wipe data, and CM9 will work with the stunner data and vice versa.
I know there is a Stock Gingerbread pre-rooted ROM..But is there a pre-rooted Stock ICS ROM with a safe kernal so the only thing I have to do flash it using PC Odin?

Unfortunately, the only safe way for the moment to root ICS is to flash a custom kernel in PC ODIN...I suggest you flash Speedmod or Notecore. Then you can use triangle away to reset the binary counter and get rid of the triangle.
Im on CM9 at the moment.. Just to be sure, Flash stock ICS (should I wipe/factory before or it doesnt matter?). Flash a kernal. Then do a wipe/factory since it´s safe now.. Am I right?
Or another thing, Is there a custom Touchwiz based ICS ROM which is safe from the EMMC bug and is rooted, if yes then which do you recommend for speed and stability?

Ok CM9 is safe to wipe...only if you are using the CM9 kernel. ICS is not safe for certain even running a custom kernel. The safest way to do a full wipe is flashing a GB kernel, wiping and then flashing the custom rom.
There's no Stockish rom that is safe from emmc bug...just the safest is to flash a known so far safe custom kernel and run the custom rom or your choice. I am still running stock rom with notecore kernel and it works great...
Is this safe following?
2. Long, No raised couter OR Exclamation mark
-Downgrade to Rootable GB ROM and Root it. OR Download This pre rooted GB ROM and flash using PC Odin
-Wipe cache, data and delvic cache from recovery
-Install Mobile Odin Pro
-Copy ICS ROM file in .tar (you want to flash) to Internal SD card (recommended, but you can have it on EXT too)
-Copy one of custom Kernel in .tar file e.g.Notecore, Speedmod, CF root kernel Or other any with same function.
-Open Mobile Odin Pro
-select open file
-Point to ROM file you have copied
-All fiels will popup and feel automatically
-select kernel and point to custom kernel file you have copied
Flash.
Done!

Yes Rivan_92, that is a long yet safe method to root a stock Ice Cream Sandwich firmware. The shorter safe method would be to flash anyone of the safe custom Ice Cream Sandwich kernels listed in the quote, via PC ODIN. After that, download Triangle Away from the Google Play Store to get rid of the yellow triangle.
@Rivan_92
Yes this is one of safest method, N i am sure you copied it from one of my thread.
Still want more detail about procedure find 'ROM switching" on my signature.
Thanks you guys!
Yes dr.ketan, i did copy the text from on of your threads =D also thanks for the thread in your sig. for switching over.. Very detailed and helpful!
First of all, HI guys and sorry for my irregular english.
I read since a long time XDA Forums to prepare me in flash and root methods for my galaxy note.
At now, i'm using this stock rom:
[ICS][4.0.3][Stock][OpenGermany]N7000XXLPY_N7000OXALPY_N7000XXLPT_HOME.tar.md5
+
CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LPY-v5.6-CWM5.tar + SuperSU
but i came from a stock rom: N7000UBKK2 with default kernel KK1 from Samsung and Movistar. and i have only a nandroid backup of my default Samsung/Movistar rom.
I have another gingerbread samsung stock rom, for emergency cases:
N7000UBKK8_N7000WEKK1_N7000PETKK1_HOME.tar.md5
But my point is:
I wish test some roms, before to decide which one use in dual boot system:
- Stock 4.0.4 (LRG or you suggest me LRK or another more recent ?)
- AOKP
- Criskelo
- Chrack
- Paranoid
- Cyanogen 9
And i have ready to use: Odin 1.87, Odin Mobile, SuperSU (if is necesary), Abyss 4.2 (CW/Red) for recovery, Abyss 4.2 CW for odin and CF-Root for LRG (if is necesary i can find one for LRK or another recent)
But i'm confused about how exactly do that. Yes i know there are many... MANY topics about that but, I only need a bit of help guys to understand the exactly process and avoid EMMC BUG...
If i understant correctly, i must follow this method, please correct me if i'm grong:
01 - Check if i'm root and settings are in depuration + unkown sources
02 - Because i'm using an ICS Kernel i need first downgrade to Abyss for continue
03 - Reboot in Recovery and flash Abyss4.2 CW/Red, after "reboot recovery" and make wipes
Which one should i use for this CW or Red Version?
...
But after this i have problems, because i have ever red: before flash a custom rom you need a same base. Then ok i think for use for example CM9, or Paranoid, or Criskelo, I need a 4.0.4 rom then i have a:
[ICS][4.0.4][Stock][OpenGermany]N7000XXLRG_N7000DBTLRG_N7000XXLRB_HOME.tar.md5
Ready to flash but...
If a this moment following the previous steps, i'm in recovery of Abyss CW/Red:
Should i reboot using this Abyss kernel in download mode to flash a stock LRG ?
...
Or in another reality, is not needed flash Abyss to flash a stock rom using Odin ?
I wish first test the Stock 4.0.4 before any other custom to make a base point of comparison
...
And after, using 4.0.4 LRG + CF-Root, is safe use install from zip file in recovery to flash any other rom like CM9 for example ? or i need use abyss recovery (before flash it using CR-Root recovery) to flash any other rom (ICS) ?
Again i hope you can help me with these questions, and really sorry is the text is so long but i prefeer to know rightly how to procced before brick my phone, because i still waiting for a JIG (you know, for emergency...)
Tnks to all.
First of All You need to know that there is no need for the same base to flash the ROM.
Second thing You have to use Abyss Redpill 4.2 Original Logo Recovery(It uses GB Kernel) If you are not going to downgrade to GB and want to flash on top of your current ROM
Third Whenever you want to flash CM9/AOKP/AOSP first downgrade to GB(Pre rooted Rom) OR GB then Root it and then flash the rom by going it to CWM recovery.
Fourth thing is Never flash Abyss using PC Odin.
Proper Way to Flash CM9/AOSP/AOKP for a clean install (You will lose data)
Download a prerooted GB Rom from here ===> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Reboot your phone is Download Mode. (Vol Down+Home+Power)
Open Pc Odin on your Pc/Laptop
Connect your phone to PC via USB Cable
A Small Box in Left Upper turns Yellow. It means your phone is recognized by Odin
Now Select GB File under PDA Tab (Do not change any settings)
Start Flash
YOU WILL HAVE A GB ROM ON YOUR PHONE WITH ROOT
Now Go to Recovery
Install Zip from SD Card
Flash Rom
Flash Gapps
Do All 3 Wipes (Cache/Dalvik/Data)
Reboot System.
you might wanna root first and backup efs before jumping to any rom that is different csc then you previous one.

Tnks to all, at now i'm testing some roms and kernels, looking for a "perfect" mate for my paranoid android (tableted rom), and in my tests i still looking for a decent kernel because (may this is my imagination but...) CF-Root LRG kernel in LRK Rom (Chrack's Rom) consume excessively batery but i will test in an ordinary day because may is not problem from rom, this should be a problem from kernel...
I read before: SpeedMod kernel was developed just for this situation: low batery comsumption + high perfomance...
