Most stable ROM/kernel and reception/3g problems - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'am currently using Darky's ROM Extreme, the newest version. And well, from the moment I started using it my internet & reception started to work very poorly. Connectivity to 3g is dying almost always (And I live in LONDON. How's that possible?) and reception bar's jump from one to max frequently. I am not quite sure that this is Darky's fault but well - when I was running stock ROM + speedmod it was just perfect.
So yeah two questions from me:
1) What's the best ROM in the matters of 3g and reception? It also need's to have the tether function (all ROM's have that right?) 'cause I'm using that quite a lot.
2) If not because of the ROM, any idea where from my problems might be coming from?

Try putting in #9900# in keypad
Disable fast dormecy and exit (may need to do this everytime you restart phone)
or
search the #197328640# code on here I use Ario Rom as I dont like ICS type roms
Its stable fast and no issues with 3g or wifi..
..and it has tether w/semaphore
See if that helps.

SGS/Doc's Rom Questions

Just cooked and installed a rom on my Telstra GT-I9000T handset and I couldn't be happier. The speed has more than doubled and I am free from Telstra refusing to release updates and their bloatware. Any way I have some Questions.
I'v installed Doc's 9.6.6 Rom and it's going quite well.
1. The GPS has improved but I think it could still be better. I see there is an APP out there called GPS Aids and I was wondering if it would improve my GPS functionality or would it not work with a custom rom like mine?
Are there any methods to make my GPS better? I feel that this is the phone's achilles heal.
2. I now have the option under settings > About Phone > Software Update. I guess Samsung or Google will make Gingerbread avaliable for the SGS soon. When it is will i be upgraded OTA with this software update feature?
3. Any word on when gingerbread is coming out and if/when it will be avaliable in the RomKitchen? I know it's in Beta testing at the moment. Can't be too long before it starts to get released around the globe.
1. You could try a newer rom/modem as they definitely help out with GPS. Currently on JQ1 I get a lock within 5 secs accurate to about 10m. You could also try Faster Fix from the market
2. Upgrade will happen when Samsung releases it.
3. Supposed to be coming out March but no one really knows.

GPS Aids do works on Doc's ROM. What it does is speed up satellite discovery. So in theory you'll see satellites faster, but this doesn't necessarily means that it will be locked faster.
On my SGS it takes an average of 20s to lock using LBSTestMode. Some navigation apps takes longer though (not sure why). Also as utsmaster18 said, fasterfix helps too.
Latest DOC's ROM is 9.9.5 (based on JS8) and I've read (can't remember what thread) that ZSJPG modem is very good. I'm using JS8 + JPY CSC + ZSJPG modem, with Damian Kernel. I have gps aids and faster fix and I do love the GPS performance.

I don't think this function works at all. Even on my stock ROM this was useless. At least for me. I'd say you'll be best served by the XDA comunity.

Rumor says it would be out this month. In fact there is a leaked beta ROM already out and many custom ROMS built on top of it. But an official *golden* ROM from Samsung, I think that even they (samsung developers) can't tell for sure.
This is my ROM:
XWJS5_Wipe-v9_6_6-23-29-22-04-03-rM9FJUquQU
I got the GPS working.
First I used an ap called GPS Status to reset my GPS data as Dialing *#*#1472365#*#* does not work for me.
After I cleared all my GPS data I used FasterFix to add the fix although I am not sure if FasterFix was necessary as maybe clearing the data was all I needed to do.
GPS is really good now though.
I also got the compas working in GPS Status. First time I have had a compas work on my phone.

I have a mate with an old Nexus phone and he recieves firmware updates OTA. I never had this with my stock firmware (2.1-Update1) but Telstra probably removed it.
It will be interesting to see if I am able to update this way.
I may be wrong, but I guess Nexus firmware comes from Google itself, while we have to wait for samsung to release it. That's why we probably won't get updates through that menu.
At least on stock froyo (JPY) that menu hasn't worked for me. Not even to tell that I was running the most updated firmware. All I got was errors connecting to the server, or some other words with the same meaning
I'm pretty sure you're right and nexus firmware comes straight from Google.
GPS Aids and Doc's Rom works well together and gave me GPS lock in 2 minutes or so.
That's with JPE modem.
Now using Darky's 9.4, JQ1 modem without GPS Aids and getting locked in under 30 seconds with Google Maps and Navigation.
But I'm not knocking ROM creators around here, GPS Aids and Doc Rom FTW!
And yes, Nexus handsets get OTA directly from Google, no mobile operators in the damn way.
I might try GPS AIDS.
The clearing the data method with GPS Status then using Fast fix has made my GPS super accurate but it takes forever to get a fix and actually start working.
Just another question. Not really related to the OP but my provider has released 2.2 and there is a new modem JP9. Is it worth flashing this to my phone. I am running JL2 and it seems fine. Has any one compared JL2 to JP9?

Best Settings??

Hello All,
Have just started using this forum and failed to introduce myself previously, my name is Jay; I am 27 from DC but in Afghanistan for a few more months (yea..sucks) new to rooting, flashing and all that but I have recent interest in it and it passes the time better than most thing we are "allowed" to do over here.
I just switched from a HTC Desire to a Galaxy Captivate
So far...I have unlocked it (via cellunlocker.net), upgraded to the leaked 2.3.4 Gingerbread, Rooted using the 10step method posted here, Installed Victory v1.5 Rom, tried flashing Talon kernel but bricked the phone and had to redo the above...
My question is to those more knowledgeable than myself with all this...what is the best Kernel, Rom, Modem...whatever else...that I can have on this device to keep it running smoothly, fast and reliable?
I do all the basic call, txt, surf...play games, watch movies, use apps, etc...not a developer but want my phone to be tweaked as much as possible so it does not seem outdated or lag with new things being added.
My current settings are:
Baseband I897UCKH3
Firmware 2.3.4
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKH3-CL461307
Build VictoryRom_v1.5
There is nothing wrong with the phone...as I said above, if I could do more to it and have an overall better device and pass some time here I would enjoy that. Victory seems great but all I notice myself is the battery indicator has changed and...thats about it (a lot likely goes unnoticed by me)
I do have one problem with the phone that maybe a different modem can fix? (I hope) for some reason my GPRS will not work out here with my browser...I can use the market and apps that connect to the internet but my browser seems to be WiFi only. I have changed the settings from usa to europe since I am using a sim from over here but no luck...and added the gprs settings to the phone which allowed apps internet access but zero for browser..any ideas?
I really thank anyone who takes the time to reply...I am sure teaching a new person in this is annoying just as showing the new guy here how to clean his weapon...lol...but we were all new at everything once and I thank you all for reading my novel
-Jay
Jay,
Thank you so much for your service and contribution to our freedom, I know it must be hard to be away from the life you once knew. Hang in there It's not for nothing. Hopefully someone will be able to help with your GPRS settings. I am running the same setup on my captivate only I have used Boogs kernel to install clockwork recovery as well. You can flash boogs kernel over the kernel you have now and that will let you flash roms or speedmods later. If I were you I'd keep my eyes peeled for GPRS settings in your area and wait for EXT or speedmod kernel for the 2.3.4 They are saying RFS is pretty quick to begin with though. It may be hard to beat but im sure one of these great Devs will figure out a way to make 2.3.4 smokin fast. Once again thanks for doing what you do. Keep your head down Soldier!
Steve
If you like using your mobile providers Net, you might give I9000 ports a try. They allow for better Upload speeds but you will sacrifice Audience chip support (noise suppression processor that only I897 have). Also since I9000 source usually drop first they have all sorts of kernel mods like Voodoo sound, Voodoo color fix, BLN, init.d files tweaks like V6, among many more. Sadly I897 native roms always play catch up with I9000's.
Personally I prefer native rom, because they tend to run smoother for longer periods of time (I9000 tend to slow down over time on my phone, but thats just my experience) and I don't use ATT's network a whole lot (90% of the time I'm around a wifi connection) and I like the audience chip, it is a phone before anything else.
Edit: Also there isn't a "best" rom, kernel or modem. Each rom has their own pros and cons, same as Kernels. And no 2 phones are the exact same so not all of them take well to all the tweaks, mods, etc. And most of the time i9000 kernels wont work with i897 roms, at least in GB.

[Q] IncS MIUI 2.4.13 - GPRS/HSPA keep changing

Hi all,
I'm using latest MIUI ROM atm and love it. however there's a problem of the signal sign which stays on G all the time unless i'm doing any data-related task such as browsing or facebook. at that moment it will quickly change to HSDPA.
not sure if it's a feature or a bug by MIUI?
i have used trinity, coredroid and icecold, they're all good staying in H/3G
Just wondering if anyone else experiencing the same issue with MIUI rom?
I already tried the 27/28/29 radio as well
thanks for the replies

That's weird.. I had never experienced that, when I were running it..

Does this happen everywhere or only in certain locations?
am sure you are aware that gprs/3g is dependent on the network strength.
so it could be cos of a low signal strength area.
since you have tried a couple of radios, try any other rom & check if the problem persists
My phone behaves like this too. But I believe it's carrier specific because when I was using the previous operator the signal always stay in H. Once I begin using current operator, the signal stay in 3G and will switch to H if I access mobile data.
Hi all,
yeah I did try other ROMs and it works alright (trinity and coredroid + icecold)
with the MIUI, the problem persists everywhere even when I change the radio
very hard for me to change MIUI because of the feature and the smoothness
now I set it to use 2G only to save battery
I guess it's not a feature in MIUI since changing between GPRS/HSPA drains the battery?

Actually you can try changing some settings in /system/build.prop. Look for these two settings:
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=6
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
If they're of different values, change them, reboot and see if there's any difference. Don't worry, if anything goes wrong, just change them back.

[Q] A ROM that simply works[Solved]

I'm currently using CM7.2 by Mebitek and I must say it is running very smoothly with stability. But recently, I've been having problems with my wifi and 3G data not connecting. It's probably because of the Kickass kernalizer script.
Anyway, I wish to know which is the most stable ROM and which scripts or mods can be used with it. Also, which scripts should one stay away from while using the said custom ROM. Doesn't matter if it is CM7 or stock based.
Here is what I use my smartphone for: calls, sms, email, web browsing, YouTube, and Amazon Kindle. I use wifi and 3G.
Please suggest something. I've messed around with a lot of Custom ROMs(I had fun while doing it) and now I wish to have a phone that I can rely on in times of need.
TL;DR: Need to know which is the most stable custom ROM and which scripts can be used with it.
Solved:
Mebitek's CM7.2.0 RC1 v1.0
With:
1) Slaidyboost V2.3
2) Darktremor's a2sd
3) Beats Audio
4) BraviaMegaBass
Issues: Google Play Store error 492. Unable to delete dalvik-cache. Unable to uninstall an app.
Issues 2: Getting system FC sometimes in v1.2.
MORe ROM with Slaidyboost:
1) Rebooted while I was showing off. So embarrassed.
Andro-ID v3.2 without any scripts:
The most stable and smooth ROM among all of the above.
Andro-ID v3.3.1 without any scripts:
Stable but a little slow sometimes.
you can try MORe v1 by godell
stable, fast, and it includes slaidyboost script too
RC 5.3 with slaid shuld give a good battery and stability
Andro-id 3.3.1with slaid but I still dint test that rom for connectivity issues...give it a try..
Cyanmobile and sliad was good for me...well of course I had a force or sleep of death atleast once a day, rather than that, everything shuld be fine.
Emanon V3 with slaid is good too..
P.S -- Sucks to say but I don't use 3G coz I like airtels connectivity and it sucks in terms of 3G coz thhey rob us....lol
And off-topic - does docomo has good 3G plans? Want to change to 3G badly...
Cheers.. give a try to all these roms and suit yoursrlf...

no rom runs video streaming better than the stock rom in my experience, if i wanted that i would go back to a stock rom (it's been fine tuned by the vendor)
stock worked best for me, but it's not performance i'm interested in, it's the features, that's why i use cyanmobile atm
Thanks guys. I'll give it a try and post here.

I'm using the Rs. 246/month plan(Prepaid). It gives 720MB of data, which lasts a month if used for browsing(With pics) and Google Maps. The plan includes 250 minutes of calls to local/national and roaming. It also includes 100 smses(I replace this with the Rs. 7 plan which makes SMS cost Rs .05 paisa). So, at only Rs. 246, I don't have to recharge for a whole month. Check the attachment.

Sure, no problem.
For CM7 RC5.3, should I install the updates too? There are 4 updates there. One says "(Outdated. Do not install.)".

Apply 1st 2nd and optional updates....no need for outdated one as its included in 2nd.. also dwnld slaid...its working wonders for me
I have just tried lots of different Roms.
I've finally settled on emanoN version 6. this is the only rom I've tried that has had no force close at all.
it does have issues with disappearing icons from the draw and the home screens, installing adw launcher totally cured it.
I don't tinker with any settings and am not interested in over clocking as performance is ok.
I use wifi and 3g intensively and have had no problems with lost connections.
I use aldiko for most books, and coolreader for books in plain text format.
also installed the gingerbread keyboard.
would highly recommend it.
I'm unable to turn off the 'Automatic Brigtness' option in RC5.3. Can someone please help me with that?

The mini has got no auto brightness sensor. So don't care about the option. The option is only for phones which support it.
The developer hasn't deleted the option. You can try kittenlunix cm7. He has deleted unsupported options from the rom.

Oh that's fine. I want to turn on the 'Status bar brightness control'. But the option to turn on the status bar brightness control is grayed out and it says 'Automatic brightness is enabled'. I attached a screenshot of that in my previous reply.
Hm i cant remeber that option. Squads rc 5.3 is a long time back.
On the other cm7 roms, like mebiteks, the option for changing brightness via statusbar is working.
Maybe you should try another version of squads rom.

It's hard to recommend since I also use the Mebitek's version (from Kittenlinux), I would suggest to remove that script and go for slaidy. For me it's the longest installed ROM I've used, the only nag is the Mobile Tethering is buggy (when I select it opens but you can't turn it off unless you start wifi).
But the stability is hardly compared by other ROMs.
Tree DreamW Rom batteri life 2g 3g umts all work nice overlocked at 740 go to 806 but i recomand 710 max 740

I'm currently testing the RC5.3 with slaidy and it seems to be very nice. I was just thinking about using slaidy with Mebitek's CM7.
When I was on Mebitek's ROM, I was using V6 supercharger and Kickass Kernelizer. I had problems like:
1) Settings would not stick. Example: Go to settings>Sound> Turn on Audible touch tones. Press back. Go to Sound again and see that "Audible touch tones" is off.
2) Google Play Store error.
3) When on wifi connection: Turn off wifi and wait for it to connIf it does not then turn on airplane mode, then turn off airplane modeect using 3G. If it gets connected to 3G then great. If it does not then turn on airplane mode, then turn off airplane mode. It should connect. OR just reboot with wifi off.
After sometime if you try to turn on wifi again: Error. Bang head on wall.
If it does not then turn on airplane mode, then turn off airplane mode
I suspect that the above problems I faced were because of the Kickass Kernalizer script, beause the script came with a warning.
Did you manage to handle the wifi hotspot issue? By using a third part app or something?

[Q] Noob with unanswered questions

I've just ditched the BB (hooray!), have rooted and flashed CM9 and working out what to tweak next... I HAVE read loads of posts but still have a few questions.
1. Modem.bin files : there doesn't seem to be a list of differences, and people says some are better than others. I flashed XXKB3 and it works well. Better than others, I don't know. Does anybody know what differs in the versions?
2. GPS - Is there any way to fix the poor reception (have Fasterfix). Anyone modded the aerial or similar?? Otherwise can recommend a good GPS puck for the car
3. Supercharger V6 - yes or no? I only get redraw a bit, but always with Firefox Beta so maybe it's just that app. I understand the principles behind it, just not whether it is worth bothering on the I9000
Thanks so much (in advance) and to everyone keeping the I9000 alive and up-to-date. Still a fantastic bit of kit even if 2 years old!
H.
1. The difference is that some modems have better/worse signal in certain locations. E.g i live in Europe and i might get 1-2 bars with one modem and full 4 bars with another.. so just test them out to find an optimal one.
2. Dont know anything bout this, i think it varies between different roms. But i dont personally use gps that much that i have a need to figuree it out.
3. Definately install V6! I got to a point that i had constant redraws and the phone started to lag, etc. Installed V6 and working sooo smooth now also the dev has made an additional 3g booster script, this worked good for me also, though the speed increase wasnt very big but even an slight speed increase isnt bad , eh?
