kernels won't flash - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

--sorry for the noob issue ...
i've unlocked, rooted and s-off my Raider, but can't get kernels to flash. It's an otherwise stock phone running stock ICS and kernel. Thing just boots back into the stock kernel.
So i unzipped the KangBang kernel updater and rewrote the scripts to write all their intermediary files to the sdcard, put it back together, ran it in recovery, and discovered that the utils in the update zip that unpack and insert the zImage into boot.img don't seem to run, or at anyrate output nothing.
dd outputs a 16M boot.img, but that's it. unpackbootimg and mkbootimg produce nothing.
the mkbootimg.sh script does produce a createnewboot.sh file.
Could anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong and how to fix it? --Thanks.
Sent from my HTC-X710a using XDA

-- i did also rewrite mkbootimg.sh to produce a createnewboot.sh that'd operate on and output to files on the sdcard where i'd gotten the updater-script to put the boot.img.
neither mkbootimg nor unpackbootimg would run in a terminal shell on the phone when it's been normally booted; dunno if that's default behavior.

You can use the flash image GUI tool from the market just extract the kernel on the sdcard use the the tool to flash the image.

Sounds like you don't have busybox properly installed.

Thank you for your good suggestions guys.
Nothing works so far, including installing busybox 1.20.1 in both /system/bin and
/system/xbin.
so far i'm only trying to put in one of the kernels from these xda forums. Thot that'd be easiest. ...Little did i know...
Have tried all the major recovery mods.
Currently have TWRP 2.1.10 installed.
No joy so far.

i dunno. It still looks like the utils zipped into the kernel updater zips, aren't doing their thing. They're statically compiled binaries looks like, shouldn't depend on libs or busybox.
What do i know.
... not nearly enuf, obv.

I have the same exact issue. This happened to me after using the De-Sensed rom. Then I had boot loop with one of the kernels so I fastbooted relocked my device, RUUed back to factory.
Still S-Off in HBOOT and security flag is 0.
So I unlocked my device again, flashed CWM, rooted, flash stock rooted ROM. Tried flashing fauxes 007 kernel but it wouldn't flash. The script executed in CMW without error, but still stock kernel it did kill my wifi and I had to manually copy over the stock system\lib\modules\bcmdhd.ko file to get wifi back.
So I manually tried flashing the zimage using fastboot flash zimage zimage. I get some failed error from fast boot basically permission denied jargon.
I am at a loss, only thing I can think to do is to relock, RUU back to stock, S-ON.
Start over from scratch unlock, root, S-OFF steps.

If you are s-off, does your hboot say locked, unlocked, or japunabear? If it says locked then you still have to unlock it using through HTC dev and you'll be set.

[Q] Help - Nexus One Recover Image

Hello:
I justed unlocked my nexus one for the first time. i was successful in unlocking it, but after flashing my phone with the recovery image: recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img, i'm getting a triangle with an exclamation sign.
did i use the wrong recovery image? what i'm i doing wrong?
anyhelp?
Thanks
DoN
ps: i got my recovery image here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611829
well this is because your stock Android is still pointing to the stock recovery,
There are two ways of overcoming the problem you have,
Step 1 would be to flash recovery again
Step 2 would be to boot the phone into recovery (without booting into the stock OS) after completing step 1 and flash a custom ROM or you need to delete a few files.
Instructions for deleting the files can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000357
Hope this helps.
To get into your custom recovery without booting, just follow the on phone menu options, BOOTLOADER then RECOVERY. Once in recovery, flag this, and it will delete the two files that restore stock recovery:

Is it possible to flash a recovery without using ADB? Possibly directly from the phone using the terminal? I have my phone at work on a computer without ADB, and my phone has its bootloader unlocked but has not been rooted.

Short answer is no...
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to use fastboot, which requires connection to a computer. On phone methods require root access...
If you have a usb cable you could do it from your works computer (all you need install is the driver).

Just use Rom manager and first flash an old version of clockworkmod, which is located on the bottom of the app. After that flash amon ra recovery which is the option above the clockworkmod option.

just s-off and flashed a new kernel now no wifi

i am on stock ICS rooted unlocked and now s-off i recently flashed a kernel not only did the kernel not take, event though recovery says it did but indicated by setcpu (set cpu max shows 1.2gz) but now my wifi doesnt work, im using the same sd card i used when doing s-off could this be the problem
Boot sector is screwed up. Fastboot flash an unsecured boot.img, then try to reflash whatever kernel you were trying to flash in recovery.

[Q] what am i doing wrong?

hey there everyone
i have s-off,bootloader unlocked, updated to hboot 1.85.2525, root enabled, usb debugging, wcx revocery
im coming from stock rogers rom. sick of waiting for ics.
but whenever i install a custom rom i get boot loops. did i miss a part? i've tried 3 or 4 of the main custom roms. all the same, stuck at boot loop or hangs there. i've done everything right from the bootloader unlocked to s-off(wire trick) then updating hboot, flashing a recovery (wcx), installing superuser
do i have to install an att or bell gingerbread ruu then update from ota? then install a custom rom? shouldn't just installing the custom rom work?
coming from a nexus one.. so much more stuff to do just for a custom rom....
I was having the same issue with my friend's Rogers HTC Raider. (When he was running the stock Gingerbread)
Last night, we put everything back to normal (Bootloader re-locked, etc.) and installed the stock Bell ICS. ( RUU_HOLIDAY_ICS_35_S_BM_3.38.666.2_Radio_3.04.4740.11_34.29.701040.22_release_255916_signed )
Then did the usual procedure of unlocking bootloader, installing clockworkmod recovery, and installing a rom. The rom we did was Desensed 1.1. It booted fine and is pretty feast. Wifi isn't working on it (I think mainly because his phone is S-ON and that causes kernel issues when flashing).
I hope this helps.
S-on or s-off does not effect WiFi working or not, they are 2 different things.
If you are s-on flash boot.IMG thru fastboot, flash Rom thru recovery. Sometimes u have to reflash boot.img

No, he was right. With S-On, when you fastboot flash, modules are not usually included. Thus, when he just flashed the zip, the kernel wasn't flashed, and the ROM's modules most likely don't match.

well in those past two years you have updated to the .13d spl and this a hacked up spl to give you more ram. it isn't fully s-off but rather you are limited.
not sure what you have done to your phone so I can't tell you how to fix it. my suggestion would be to fastboot -w or superwipe from recovery, then flash your rom again (and whatever kernel or mods you want to) also maybe stay away from rom mangaer and also movd to amonra recovery. again only suggestions being I don't know what you did you may as well start fresh

But now I can't use all of the apps I bought that require root access anymore. This kinds of defeats the purpose of having root. And I also still have the SU icon in my app drawer.

Well have you done the steps I suggested?
1) flash amonra recovery
2) either fastboot -w or superwipe or both
3) flash new rom via amonra recovery
Any problems you have had should be fixed now
If you can explain to me a bit better what you did I may have a simpler way of fixing things but if you can't the above method should do the trick

I know I won't lose apps the point that I was trying to make was that I can no longer use theses apps because they require root access permission to run/work.

I can't push files via ADB/USB port anymore because the USB port on my phone has taken a nose dive.
well you can flash the new recovery via terminal emulator if you want, or you can attempt to do it with rom manager (not a big fan of rom manager, kinda sucks)
superwipe scripts can be flashed via recovery (cw or amonra) flashing the rom again in recovery
again not sure what you did, you only said what dosent work, this should make your root apps work
just wiping clean and and a clean install of the rom should make them work

My old sd card went bad so I had to replace it with a new one. I also clicked on the github link he has posted in the forum and I downloaded amonra_bootable_recovery folder/file as a zip. Should I also update the SPL?
Sent from the Redlight District.
well updating your recovery doesn't have much to do with updating your spl but it doesn't mean you shouldn't
the most updated spl for the dream is the .13d
if you have something else then I suggest it as you get acess to additional ram if you do (~14mb)
if you do make sure you first have the appropriate radio or you could brick your phone, either the .25 or the .08 are the only radios that work with the .13d spl
to check what you have right now, power on while holding the camera button
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I have that info on my first post of my thread. Is what I've posted the correct SPL & Radio for this to work?
Sent from the Redlight District.
you have the most updated radio and spl, although with the .13d hboot you can not flash a new recovery via fastboot, but you should still be able to via terminal emulator or if you can find the proper image in a .zip and be flashed through your current recovery. of course you should also be able to flash an alternative (amonra) recovey with rom manager. choose whatever way is easier.
and remember that flashing amonra recovery is only a suggestion and will not by itself fix your problem, I just prefer it over clockwork on the g1
mostly you should be concerned with backing up what is needed, wipeing fully, and the flashing a new rom

ummm, sorry if I wasn't clear, any change to you hboot/spl/bootloader (all the same thing) would be a downgrade. the only benifit you may get would be the ability to use fastboot to flash a recovery (or other partitions) if this really is what you want, flash the orange.nbh (found in ezterrys 2708+ thread) but after flashing a new recovery I would suggest going back to your current radio/spl as it is supperior in every other way

like isaid earlier you have the best spl for the dream, the only downfall is the semi s-on. but this is only in the fastboot sense, it isn't true s-on and with th is spl you can still have root
easiest way to boot to recovery (if rom allows) hold power, choose reboot, choose reboot recovery. you can also reboot recovery via adb (adb reboot recovery) or various apps allow this too
if this is to much info, power off. then power on while holding the home button

Sounds strange! What kernel are you trying to flash? Did you also make sure your download's MD5 is correct; could be a bad download.
Yes, md5 sum is correct. I'm trying to flash anything strange is that after full wipe and reflashing Rom I can flash anything before first boot. After first boot can't flash zip files, like Rom cleaner or kernel. Phone always reboots just after flashing starts.
Once I've found that someone had such problem and formating something through adb helped...but can't find this info again
I tried flashing almost every kernel available.

I think Rom Cleaner should be flashed before first boot anyway, but not the kernel. Are you clearing cache and dalvik before trying to flash?

Weird
Just for the sake of trying, a couple of ideas:
1- wipe the cache from recovery (not fastboot) and also wipe dalvik, then immediately flash kernel
2- perhaps there's a permission issue with the zip(s) / folder(s)
EDIT: perhaps you need to update recovery?
I reflashed recovery, tried CWM, TWRP...same on both think about going back to stock with RUU, then trying everything again from the start:-\
First advance...tried.
Second...U mean fixing permissions? Don't know if it's related to that problem, but of course will try.

Though I don't think custom recovery would have issues with permissions (since it's su privilege), it could be the folder where your zip files are doesnt have rw permission, and the recovery attempts to access the folder, is unable to, and therefore just reboots.
Try putting the zip file in a different directory (or maybe even the root folder) and try again.
In root folder? Don't understand where exactly...tried to place it on different locations in storage.

Obvious question, but the kernel is for your version of Android isn't it? You're not flashing a 4.3 kernel on to 4.2.2?
of course not I'm on android 4.2.2 and flashing the 4.2.2 kernel version
---------------------------
as for now everything's ok. Frankly speaking I didn't do anything new. reflashed recovery for the third time i believe, did the full wipe also few times, flashed arhd, rom cleaner and the kernel one by one and it works...for now
---------------------------
and no..it's still the same. After first boot, I rebooted into recevery, tried to flash different zip and what....and reboot just after flashing:/ it makes me sick...:/
Thanks to one and all. I was facing the same issue of being unable to install the Bulletproof kernel on my HTC One having ViperOne 4.2.0 custom rom and TWRP 2.6.3.3 recovery.
I followed the advice here and wiped 'Dalvik cache' and 'cache' and (without rebooting) directly dirty flashed the Bulletproof kernel which did the trick.
Hope this helps someone else too.
Got the same problem. Tried with TWRP 2.6.6.3, 2.6.6.4 & actual CWM with failed tries to flash kernel, bootscreens, themes & the 360 camera fix.
Also tried to flash these recovery via fastboot and at least the m7&m7ul versions.
It happens suddenly
Btw: i'm on an tampered,unlocked hboot 1.54
Any help or ideas are much appreciated
