APN Problem - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every time I Flash A rom I cant connect to any network, I have no signal, nothing. Can some explain to me why this is happening? It just recently started happening. Ive flashed back to stock multiple times and I DO have signal with stock. But when I flash a rom, I lose signal. There is nothing under APN list

Flash a modem. Jk4 is kind of a standard one for I9000 roms. Look in the modem thread. Also, cm/ics roms use a different install script as regular (stock base) roms. Be sure to get the right one,k or it still won't work.

Ive flashed a modem it doesnt help, When I go into phone info mostly everything is either N/A Or unknown. I flashed back to stock. I have never ran into this before. I dont know whats causing my phone to do this. I started 2 days ago when my phone randomly started rebooting. So I flashed back to stock(With bl) and now whenever flash a rom everything is unknown.
Whats the standard SGH-i897 modem?
Also this started happening after I started using Devil kernel inside my own roms.

I've had this exact issue before, right after I flashed GB bootloaders I flashed them again and it worked.
On a side note, are you restoring a nandroid?

No I usually flash back to stock before I Flash a new rom Ive already flashed stock 2.3.3 WITH BL and then I flash a kernel with CW and then I flash a rom. Ive never had this problem before. And I dont know how to fix it

Try the KK4 One Click I put together here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912
Just curious...what specific Stock package were u flashin back to before? It sounds like that stock package did not contain the default apns...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

Are you flashing the right type of modem? Aosp (cm, MIUI,ics) uses a different install script in the zip. It installs to a different place. Samsung based roms can actually use Odin to flash them, if you make a tar.md5 file for it. If you use the wrong type of install script, it won't work.

I flashed the I897UCKF1 from that post. Ive flashed my OWN rom, which means I control the modem, It just started doing this, and I am stuck on Stock until I figure out whats doing this. Ive tried multiple modems, Nothing gets and APN or Network operators on either list.

Try starting from the kk4...then flash kk4 corn kernel to get cwm then go from there.
Worth a try.

Wait, when you open the apn menu, there's nothing there? Try resetting to default apn.

i am having the same problem. the only rom that ive been able to run that i have signal with is Team Nyx (ICSSGS) RC5, all the others ive tried i get no signal or data. does anyone have any ideas why this is? if you could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. i don't know too much about the whole process, but i followed the instructions written in the threads, just this one problem...
im sticking with Team Nyx's ROM for now but i would like to be able to run custom ROMs, not just stock ICS. Thanks for any advice.

ODIN question

I have been flashing ROM's for months but it has been forever since i used ODIN to go back to stock. I am wanting to try Cyanogenmod 7 but I want to work out how to go back. I have ODIN3 V1.0 and I know I am to choose repartition option. Since I havent done this in forever, I am not sure what to choose for PDA, Phone, CSC, PIT. Maybe I am using the wrong version. I am assuming I cant use the Odin one click downloader to go back to stock.
I knew all this at one point but it has literally been 4-5 months since I did it so if someone would clarify these points it would help. I REALLY hate to post this question but I simply do not remember.
Thanks.
Odin one click to stock should work if you are build 1009 and lower.
Only if you are trying to get rid of cm7

I am build 1007. I have looked into this more and it states that I need to check repartition and you cant do that through the ODIN one click downloader that I can find.
I doubt I would got back to other ROM's but I want to have the option and frankly I should know how to do this anyway. Must be getting old or something, they say the memory is the first thing to go....or something like that....cant remember.

Just for the record, Build 1008, at least in my case, took being one-clicked very poorly. I've used v3 ever since and had no trouble... at least with flashing back to stock. I do use the 1-click to master-clear, however.

You might want to read this.
That is the definitive guide to bricking. You will probably find all the answers you need to get yourself out of that soft brick and to get back to a place where you can get to 2.2.
In theory, according to the guide, as long as you still have the 2.3 bootloaders in place, you should be able to flash a 2.2 rom

Yes, GB bootloaders work just fine on Froyo based rom. Just make sure you flash a froyo kernel first, get in recovery (don't boot the phone normally) and flash the 2.2 based rom you want (beside cognition as it flashes the sbl.bin)

As long as the froyo rom does not flash a secondary boot loader, you should be fine.

Correct ... To check the rom for a secondary bootloader, open up the zip look in the updates folder if you see "sbl.bin" that would be the secondary bootloader. Don't flash that rom.
Well since infant use .bin files can I just delete that file form the Rom? Or will it get corrupted

Yes ... You might also have to go into the script "Meta-inf" and delete the lines about sbl.bin, not sure if it is in the script to flash it individually or just the update folder...but the only rom I know has it is cognition. But I'd still check every rom I was going to flash, better safe than sorry.

[Q] No soloution anywhere i look, needs some serious help guys.

hi all,
when i first got my galaxy s it was locked to Orange (UK Network) and i unlocked the phone to be used on any network, and have been happily using it for well over half a year, i also attempted to flash the F1 SG2 Rom, however, there wasnt enough space on the partition so i flashed the phone back to XXJVQ (which i had on the phone before trying to install the F1 ROM) however, now my phone doesn't recognise the SIM that i put in, im wondering if the flash had anything to do with it or if the phone has locked itself. i have been researching around and some people have said that its something to do with efs or IMEI, i have no clue what that means but its sounds important, they also say that you need backups of these and that they contain phone files, however, if they were important there would be more emphasis placed on backing them up...
anyone who has had the same issue or someone who knows whats going on please help. everything else works fine, so is there a way to get my phone to read the SIM again without risking totally bricking the whole thing??
an (easy to understand) guide on how to fix this would be much appreciated...

Have you tried reflashing your rom?
If all else fails, i would recommend a flash of jm9 with odin. Files can be found at samfirmware.com. It's got me out of some deep black holes in the past!
Don't stress too much mate, there's been plenty of times that my phone hasn't recognised my sim when flashing cm7.
Reflash your rom, if that doesn't work, flash jm9, and most of all, relax.

Worth trying the simple things, take out sim, clean and reinsert, this has worked for me in the past, and when you do get going again get sgs toolbox and with that you can make a back up of your efs folder, check your imei against the label on box that phone came in

Jm9 helps everything - trust me.
When you flash a rom with odin it completely wipes your phone. The process of getting cm7 2.3.4 on your phone involves flashing back to froyo or eclair first.
You seem hesitant, if you're worried, i suggest you spend a few days reading up. Try the sticky on rooting/flashing in the development section.
P. S. There's a thanks button at the bottom of every post.

There are methods to root gingerbread, but they tend to be more involved then earlier versions of android. I correct my earlier statement that root is necessary. I'd highly suggest it if you want to back up apps etc, but it isn't required. I'd suggest downgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 and use the superoneclick utility. Supposedly this tool works on gingerbread but I haven't had any luck with it.
Sent from my glitched ICS Captivate using XDA App
The easiest way is probably to flash Corn kernel, because you get the option to root in CWM. And you will have corn kernel, so it will also be easy to flash from there
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
If you want to flash a custom roms, flash back to stock, then flash a custom kernel via Odin, reboot to system, put the rom on root of sd card, reboot to cwm, do a nandroid backup, wipe data/factory reset, then flash zip from sd card. That's the basic of flashing. Search around in the captivate section and you will find your answers. There are so many topics about flashing roms. Most of the time the rom dev, posts detailed instructions on flashing his/hers rom from start to finish.
Almost every custom rom comes pre-rooted. No need to root once you flash the custom rom.
Also, if you want to save your contacts, you should do so before you flash back to stock, or before you flash the custom rom. If you want to backup all of your apps, then you will need to be rooted, and have titanium backup installed from the market.

[Q] 2 Galaxy S - one with full bars, the other without... baseband problem?

Hi,
I've had my Galaxy S for ~ a year now and have never had a problem with signal problems. I bought a second Galaxy S for my wife, and it gets a very weak signal. I've tried switching the sim cards, but have the same issue - the new one has low signal, my older one has full bars.
They are both running cyanogenmod nightlies (ver. 9)
The only difference I see is baseband. The one with full bars is running I9000XJVK the one with weak strength is I9000XXJVT.
Is this the problem? Can I change the newer phone to I9000XXJVK?
Hey man this is what you are looking for. Grab the jvk zip from here and flash it in cwm that will change your baseband to the same as your phone. Baseband is your modem. Build is the firmware that phone is running. This will fix it guaranteed.

I've used Odin before. I can try to flash it back.
I was looking at the back of the two phones - beside the sim card there is something that looks like a sticker, it looks like this has been pulled off on the one that doesn't work as well. Could this be the issue? Based on what I've found, the antenna is around that area...
Seems like hardware, but I would flash it back to stock gingerbread. There is a thread in general with all the stock roms and odin and pit files. Grab the odin download with pit files. Use 512 pit. Grab the Ugkg3 download under north America in that thread its 2.3.3. But let's just see if it fixes it. Before doing the flash I would go into cwm and wipe cache, dalvik cache and factory reset. Also reformat internal sd under settings. The only way to completely eliminate a software problem is to make your phone bone stock.
