Hi, guys!
Yeeey, I've got myself a white Samsung Galaxy Note. Lovely little thing. BUT, I am on Giffgaff (was/will have been), and the Note is locked to Vodafone. I am in the UK and it is for Vodafone UK. I checked and it won't accept any other card (T-Mobile, nor Giffgaff).. It is 2.3.6 Gingerbread.
Sooooo... I searched this forum and yes there a few threads that give solutions, but some of them aren't quite clear on whether certain method applies to this, other, or all countries...
My first question, before I as noob that I am attempt to unlock my Note, is "does the Note need to be rooted in order to unlock it using that one app that unlocks the Note?
And what is the simplest UK version?
Do I need to have a Vodafone sim too, before I can unlock the Note?
For some reason can't connect to my wifi (password in and all, but when it connects, then saving, then disabled), so how can i download the specific app on my laptop and then install it on the Note?
Thanks folks!
to release the notes no brand, you have to download a firmware stocks here http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/ ... Install Kies on your computer, connect your phone and make sure that all the drivers installed correctly.
Extract tar file from the ROM(remember to extract it till tar, dont go deep). Put the phone into download mode (vol. down+home+power buttons), Start odin, then only connect the phone via USB. Choose continue on the phone, Now ID:COM box shud turn yellow
Make sure that only two boxes are checked in odin - Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time.- If your downloaded ROM contains single file Choose PDA button in Odin and select tar file you extracted before. Download odin here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=771703&d=1320429195 ... - If your downloaded file contains multifiles Choose CODE in PDA, MODEM in PHONE, Multi CSC in CSC ... Choose START button.
The phone will reboot after the flash. Done. no matter you have permission of root
So, I have to root, no matter what? I was thinking there was a way of doing it (only the UNLOCKING part!) somehow less invasively...
Will this method you described, leave me with the Note as it is in terms of Gingerbread, apps installed, etc., minus of being unlocked and rooted?
If I'm gonna step into the territory of rooting my Note, why would I not go straight for the Rocket 4.1 Rom , or KingDroid whatever latest version for Note?
On these forums and da internet they seem to get most positive attention and reactions, no?
I'm in no rush (not a mater of hours, but I'd like to do it till Sunday evening), so I am willing to follow longer, safer way of doing stuff...
Anybody from the UK to voice their opinion?
Thanks...
Please install cooked rom if you want (es.cyanogen). with root permissions and recovery then follow this guide carefully : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 ..

Hey there,
I was trying to update my Vodafone Samsung Galaxy S to Froyo via Kies with Registry hack. It failed and I used Optus firmware from Samsung-Firmware via Odin.
I don't think 850MHz works well with Optus firmware (written on the back of the box it's supported). I tried to install Telstra firmware from the same website but it doesn't seem to work on my mobile as well.
So, now I want to go back to use Vodafone Australia firmware. I couldn't find this one available anywhere on the web. Someone on the forum suggested to use ROM backup software to copy from someone else who's also having the same phone.
Actually my wife does. I found that Rom Backup Manager requires rooting. I understand this changes product code (or something like that) on the phone and since she's not interested in changing this, and I heard many people in other forums complain the root methods they used were not 100% clean when they UNrooted, I wanted to ask here if you know any root method that has 100% proven undo / unroot way?
Maybe the root/unroot built in XDA SuperPower app??
Alternatively, if you can find me the official Vodafone Australia ROM to use, that`ll be just great of course .
Fear not, there is an official Vodafone AU ROM floating around the Whirlpool forums.
To go back to it, you will need to repartition with the 512.pit, and flash back to a previous un-branded ROM (PDA & MODEM). I went to the european JF3 (found on samfirmwares.com), as this was released before the VAU ROM (JG3).
Then, you can flash the VAU ROM's PDA & CSC files.
You NEED to go back to JF3 first, or you get "Unable to mount /data/DBASE" & other errors... Going back seems to fix that problem
DISCLAIMER: This worked for me, but may or may not work for you. Before you do ANY flashing, you should always backup your /efs folder, contacts & ensure you can access the 3 button recovery mode (Home, Vol +, Pwr). I will not be held responsible if you follow my advice (correctly or incorrectly) and you brick your phone. By following the procedure below, you acknowledge this disclaimer and any risks associated with reflashing your phone's firmware. You have been warned!
That said, it worked for me, and I thought I'd bricked my phone at one point whilst going back to stock. (I didn't revert to JF3 on my initial try!)
Before anything, make sure all lag-fixes are removed! Root is OK.
Remove your SIM card & SD Card
Then...
1) Enter download mode & Re-partition using ODIN & 512.pit (Phone will power off after)
2) Enter download mode & Flash to JF3 (PDA & Phone, re-partition unchecked)
3) Enter recovery mode & Factory Reset / wipe data
4) Enter download mode & Flash to VAU F/W (PDA & CSC, Re-partition unchecked)
5) Enter recovery mode & Factory Reset / wipe data
6) Enjoy your stock phone!
Hope that helps everyone
Bought a Galaxy S of ebay and its Vodafone branded and I am on another network and its very heavily branded. I just want the standard 2.2 but am having trouble finding any info I have I9000GVODJM3 at the min, can I just change this using the Kies registry patcher to another UK code?
you could try samfirmware.com and get the fimware you want... this way it will be just samsungs own firmware and not modified by the nasty network operator people.
or you could get root explorer (if your rooted) and manually remove them.

Thanks, and can I just pick any Europe firmware in there?
if thats where your from yeah you can..
Or choose a UK network phone brand and spoof Kies to that .
Method would be downgrade via Odin to Eclair .
Use Kies Registry Patcher to spoof an O2 product and upgrade Froyo to that .
O2 adds on wallpaper and bookmarks for a few O2 sites is all .
If useing Kies reg patcher you can back up the downloaded firmware .
O2 spoof product details .

Ok, My brain is fried, I've been at this all afternoon and got no where, Help, I am a total newbie to galaxy S, never had such a headache with my desire.
What I have tried is, downloaed Kies 2.0 and registry hack, it doesn't work with 2.0, so back to kies 1.5, I enter registry hack and detected etc etc XEU code and it says no update is available for this product. Grrr. I know there is an update available.
As for Odin that looks like a headache, I am running 2.1 atm
Flashing with Odin is actually very straightforward and generally much easier than faffing around with Kies. I've attached the Odin 1.7 files to this post for you, you'll find detailed instructions on how to use it in other posts but basically you launch Odin and select the ROM you want to flash (I recommend the one in this link, it's the latest v2.2.1 and is good for the UK, I'm running it on my phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10892253&postcount=305) Select this ROM as PDA, and do not select a PIT file or check re-partition. Put the phone in download mode (power off and then hold the volume down, home and power button), when you seen the 'Android at work' screen, connect the phone to your PC. You should see that Odin recognises the phone and providing it does you can start the flash. Don't disconnect your phone until the flash finnishes fully! Good luck!

Pleased to hear it mate, welcome to the wonderful world of ROM flashing!!
Still on Eclair here and am considering flashing to this ROM. I too have a Vodafone UK Galaxy S (16Gb) version. However, still not sure whether to proceed as I use a number of bluetooth devices, including SE mw600, QED Audio receiver, and an external GPS mouse. I have no problems with bluetooth but I have read alot of issues with bluetooth driver in JPY. Also happy with OCLF and built in task killer keeps my phone free from lag.
hello,
my phone is branded to orange in the uk. i have been looking into this for the past 3 days.
i am now at the point where i am ready to flash with odin but i am unsure which firmware to flash with, and i have read so much info im getting my head all wrapped around the situation
basically my current firmware is
PDA:I9000 BVJS4
PHONE: I9000 BVJP4
CSC: I9000 ORAJS4
version 2.2.1
i have looked at http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm and the amount of firmware staggers me not one all i am requesting if someone would be so kind and reply saying "flash this one mate"
i may have already read the answer but i have spent 3 days trying to figure it out for myself.
it was locked to orange but i have since unlocked it. it is currently rooted.
im not particularly bothered about warranty because i can add it to my home insurance to cover loss or damage. and from what i have read the phone is difficult to brick fully,
i have the download mode already, its just a case of get the firmware and flash.
i apologise for the very long post and i hope someone can help me
thanks for reading.
EDIT: i already have a backup of the efs folder
in my opinion don't use odin only , only if you want stock or root . Go to Doc Rambone's kitchen and build yourself your desired rom . I suggest JS8 wipe (you will lose all your data) or nonwipe ( you will have crappy data from previous rom ) , select your own csc if you want APN Settings , hardcore/SuperCurio/DamianGTO(never tested this) Kernel at your own desire , an european modem , themes sounds and boot amination at your own desire and need , and at apps and tweaks choose what you think you will use. SORRY FOR CRAPPY ENGLISH ( I'm not a native English speaker and I wrote very quickly .
I agree you can choose a CSC to suit your network .
CPW CSC covers all UK networks .
XWJS8 v9.9.5 WIPE base rom
CPW csc
Hardcore's Kernel *RECOMMENDED* kernel
JPX modem
Apps choose what you want .
Themes and boot animation choose what you want .

thamks guys, i have used odin to flash the new jvk firmware, (there is an app on market for my apn settings (im on giffgaff))
i have used criskelo's rom in the develeopment forum with his theme.
it really does amaze me when only 2 weeks ago i didnht know anything about odin or flashing and now i can downgrade/upgrade my firmware using odin, root it. and its all thanks to this wonderful website!
i even know how to install different themes etc and now i just installed a battery im just astounded.
there are a few other questions:
1) if i want to change my theme, can i just install it over the old one using cwm?
2) is there a thread/website etc where i can download certain mods? (ie i see a few of the themes have the market in different colours, different lock-screens, i just wondered if there was another place where i can get these from to install)
3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=934729&highlight=theme+creator i have found this but there doesnt seem to be a guide or anything, i cant get it to download the framework from my phone? i have tried in usb mode (kies and mass storage) download mode and mounting usb storage from the cwm. what i havent ried is with debugging mode on.

hi gazza1988, good to know u were able to debrand and flash the firmware through ODIN.
I also got my SGS through 3 UK. Its unlocked now.
But i am not am not able to install any apps and market is also not working. I also want to remove the branding.
My current config is :
PDA : I9000NEJP5
PHONE : I9000NEJP2
CSC : I9000HCGJP5
I want to flash to a stable stock firmware. Some people on forums suggested to flash JS8.
I downloaded I9000XWJS8 from samfirmwares.com but it has only one file - NEE.tar (which i guess is PDA file).
Will my current modem and CSC be compatible with I9000XWJS8 ?? Do i need to include .PIT file and select repartition ??
hi, if you want to debrand you will need new complete (ie 3 firmwares csc pda phone etc)
i assume you have odin already
if you want to debrand then download the jpu firmware (has all 3 files) here http://hotfile.com/dl/99955459/dea6962/I9000XXJPU.rar.html password for archive is samfirmware.com
once you have flashed that one go back into download mode and flash the NEE.tar as PDA to update to JS8.

Thanks for the quick reply man !!!
Do i also need to select PIT file and select re-partition ??
Also samfirmware has listed I9000XXJPU firmware download as 1 file only. Link
Like this :
I9000XXJPU ## | 512.PIT | Version 2.2.1 | 2010 December | DOWNLOAD | 1 file select NO .PIT
I've have started the download anyway, so lets see.
As i'm using my SGS in India, is it better to flash an Asian firmware with CSC which has info about indian networks ?? Can u tell me which Asian firmware on this page has all 3 files ?
possibly would be better to flash asian but what the effects of changing from one region to another are im not 100% may be worth startin a new topic in this forum as people are less inclined to look in here as they think my issue is being seen to by someone else.
the asian firmware for india is DD (ie I9000DDxxx so i would guess that the I9000DDJF2 would contain all 3 files to flash then you would have to flash I9000DDJP6 to get indian stock froyo firmware. but i would ask a more experienced person about moving regions i was a noob at this 2 weeks ago.
i am 90% certain that flashing indian firmware would debrand and enable the market, it may be worth adding a post to this thread detailing what you have now and what you would like (ie branded uk firmware to stock indian firmware - it may also be worth asking if you can use european firmware with a indian csc as i have read the indian froyo is not very good)
the reason you cant download apps from the market would be your location (ie the phone's firmware is 3 UK and you are in india so it get "confused". do you have 3g connectivity.
i have researched some of this and the CSC (country specific code) is what holds the apn settings etc so you would need an indian csc

Yes, i have 3g, but not able to sign in to google account even with 3g. And the strange part is that i can't even directly install most of the apk files. Adobe flash player apk didn't install. Even asphalt 5 didn't install. I was able to install Winamp for android. I downloaded many apks for the internet (some of them specifically packed for SGS) but 99% of them don't install on my SGS.
I have started this thread, so lets see.
Is I9000XXJPU a Unbranded firmware ?? I think we can safely assume that if I9000XXJPU firmware is designed for factory unlocked phones sold by samsung in Europe when i could solve the market issues. And i can manually enter the APN settings of my network. The issue currently i think is the 3 UK crap.
Hi,
I am new to this forum.
I bought a new Samsung SGS from Orange network UK which is locked.
I unlocked it in India and am using it.
I wanted to wipe off the memory as there are unnecessary apps installed.
If I do the wipe off will my mobile get locked or will it remain unlocked.
I also want to know how to wipe off the memory without getting my mobile locked..... Plzz do help me guys.............
One more thing ..........
My mobile firmware version is 2.1-update1
Baseband version is I9000BVJF3
Build number is ECLAIR.BVJG2
Can any one suggest me the themes that I can install in it and waht are they???
Hello,
Before you start flashing themes, Have a cruise around the forum and do some research regarding firmwares and flashing.
The first thing you need to do before any themes, is download a nice solid 2.2.1 firmware for your phone.
There is also a 2.3.3 that was just leaked, but is still in a late beta stage.
There's a ton of information on this forum. Take some time and do a bit of reading. You'll be flashing in no time.
ThankYou for your suggestion.
Sure I will go through the forum.
But just let me know one thing if I upgrade my SGS will it remain unlocked or will it be locked as I mentioned earlier that I unlocked it earlier.
It will stay unlocked.
After you unlocked it, check can you enter download mode press and hold volume down, menu, and lock-power button for 10-15 sec.
If you can't than you need to enter download mode on the phone from PC:
-Install Kies from official Samsung site(it has drivers).
-Download adbDownload attached to this post.
-Download Latest Firmware (with bootloader files).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
-Odin and pit (512).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
-Archive for enabling Google Earth and Maps rotation and tilt attached ...multitouch...zip.
-Kernel, recommended:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011146
and you good to go for the best user experience at the moment.
p.s. All instructions and how to are provided on the liks.
Hello
From what ive seen on here and other forums this is a very common problem with no real solution!?!
Am thinking that theres no fix but thought id ask before i give up so here goes!!
I have a samsung galaxy ace gt-s5830 which was originally on o2 uk that i wanted to use on vodafone uk
I managed to root the phone and get the unlock code from the phone via the bml5.img and the XVI32 Hex Editor
I then unrooted the phone put in the new sim and entered the unlock code
The phone now says vodafone uk on the lock screen but doesnt have any signal!?!
It still has an imei and baseband number and ive checked that the imei number isnt blocked
Ive also checked that all locks are off via samsung code *#7465625#
I have flashed the firmware to UK Gingerbread 2.3.6. using odin 4.38 and a one package tar.md5 file, wiped caches and rebooted etc
but the problem still remains!?!?!
Other than the no signal problem the phone works perfect and also when i take the sim card out theres signal?!?!
One other thing When ever i reboot the phone /system/csc/o2u/system cant be found although ive read this has nothing to do with the signal problem?!?
If anyone has any ideas or needs any further info then please let me know
I am new (probably pretty obviously!) to all this so please keep replys as simple as pos!!!
Many thanks
Matt

hi matt first of all..
1. did you try another firmware?
2. you follow correctly the method to flash firmwares on odin?
seems to me that your download was corrupted, or you didn't flash properly on odin.
Its not a good thing to touch the bml5 partiton wich contains our imei ... even tough u unlocked it successfully you may have made some files corrupted wich can cause that ...
A major way to know this is ... does your previous sim aquire network?
And just to inform the error message is really not relevant ... csc function is to "inform kies" so it can do update your android version to the rom of your Country/Carrier.
Hello and thanks for both your replys
Firstly to answer matias.s
These are the instructions i followed to flash the fw
Flashing the Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 Firmware
1/. Enter Download mode by pressing and holding Volume down, select and power button simultaneously
2/. Connect phone to computer and open the Odin Multi Downloader v4.38 (it should show the com port it is connected on)
3/. For OPS, browse and select Cooper_v1.0
4/. For One Package, select the MD5 flash file attached and click start. (The attached firmware is for UK Gingerbread
2.3.6. You may use any firmware at this stage)
5/. Enter Diagnostic mode by pressing and holding select and power button simultaneously and clear caches
6/. Root the Samsung Galaxy Ace using the root.zip update
7/. Download, install and Open Root Explorer (File Manager) from Android Market
8/. Add Directory csc/system/XEU/system and move files over from CSC/system
9/. Enter Diagnostic mode again by pressing and holding select and power button simultaneously and clear caches
10/. Unroot the Samsung Galaxy Ace using the unroot.zip update
11/. Enter Diagnostic mode once again by pressing and holding select and power button simultaneously and clear caches
Odin came up with pass at the end
The only instruction i didnt follow exactly was 8
Firstly it wouldnt let me create the folder and then when i went into my directory there was already a /system/csc/XEU/system which had files
Could this be the problem?!?
And to answer snowpluralism
The sim im using works fine in other devices and as i said in the op the phone even has signal until a sim is inserted!?!
Update...
I flashed the fw again with a vodafone one package md5 via odin Odin passed the download and the phone is now branded with vodafone logo and apps
It is now on android version 2.3.5 build number gingerbread.buks but still has no signal
One strange thing when i first turned the phone on after the download it updated and downloaded vodafone apps and in the phone status said it was connected under mobile network state even though it still had no signal?!?
Thanks again for your replys and any ideas again please let me know!!
And thanks to snowpluralism for explaining about the csc error That explains why kies cant update my fw!!
