Turning airplane mode on and off increases data speeds - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have observed this but don't know why this happens. Sometime, my data download speeds lag to really low speeds of 50 KB. When I turn the airplane mode on and off, the data speeds increase drastically to around 2.6 MBps. Does anyone know why the data speds change so much after the airplane mode and why it lags in the first place?
I am on LQ2, stock ICS, LPT modem, AT&T (US).

Have you tried flashing a different modem?

I think what you are experiencing is either traffic shaping by your carrier or the tower you are connecting to for data is overly busy. By cycling your radio with the airplane mode you are actually re-registering your handset on the carrier net and this may also cause you to connect to another tower that has less traffic on the backhaul link.
Some of our local networks are sometimes saturated and one can't get a connection to make a call. So what some people do is dial the emergency 112 and then drop the call, this prioritizes the handset on the tower and one can them make a call.

If you can't find a proper work around for this problem, please download the app "restart connection" from the play store. this app disconnects and then re registers your phone within 3 seconds so you don't have to manually enable and then disable airplane mode all the time which can be frustrating.
you might also wanna install "network monitor mini ", this app gives you a live reading of your data transfer on your screen in a pretty non intrusive way, so you can always know the speed of your data transfer.
I have the network monitor mini live widget at the right bottom Corner of the screen and I check it occasionally to see my connection status and whenever I am on a congested tower or if iam getting low speeds, I click on restart connection icon on my dock, and my phone gets re registered on the network and I get better speeds.this set up has helped me numerous times.
Both of us basically do the same thing, its just that my set up is a little bit easier and less annoying. I Hope you find it helpful
Good luck

I'm looking for an app like this (see inside).

Required:
- Running on N1
- Silently in the background, continuously, doing a very little and bandwidth limited download process
- The download process will not use SD space at all or will use a very little space and not growing in space
Optional:
- Can set the timer of that continuously download process
- Have an icon (widget?) to monitor it
Why do i need that?
Because i want that H "downlink and uplink icon" go online all the time even when my internet is idle. Currently, if my internet is idle, H icon will empty, and then when i'm trying to use internet there is an annoying establishing connection process for like 10 or 20 seconds before i can actually use the internet.
Thanks before.
you want to be connected to hsdpa all the time , hmm i get the point but wouldn't it drain the battery faster?
Yeah. But sometime i need that, for example when i'm tethering it while i'm charging it next to my laptop.

tethering has priority over sleeping, im pretty sure its supposed to stay on and connected when tethering. If it is losing connection its probably a signal strength/location issue.
Yeah. But also, there are other scenarios where i prefer speed over the battery.
Any idea what app i should look?
Run "ping" from a command line to any server out there (www.google.com for example), and enjoy constant connection
But I suggest looking into your settings, there is no good reason why HSPDA connection initialization should take more than a couple of seconds.
Complaint to your network operator!
The network operator should manage the connections timers to avoid long connections times...
If the amount of data in buffer is below some threshold the configuration in the network shold move you to a low capacity common channel (FACH), after that, if the amount of data is zero, you change to a state called cell_pch, where you still have the connection but don't use physical resources. You should be in this state for a couple of hours before being disconnected.
it shoudnt takes more than 1 sec to be on HSDPA again!!
Complaint to your network operator!
Yeah.
Thanks for the help guys.

[Q] Anyone else having issues with being on 4g but no data moving

I just wanted to see if this is just me or not before I call tmob about it. I have no problem being on 4g and one less then max on the signal but when I request anything even just google.com it sits there till it times out and watching the data movement I see it try to send the request but nothing. If I do it ten or twenty times it may work for one page.
I have the same issue but I'm using the t-mobile note 4 on cricket. ?
I have been experiencing this issue for a few months now with little resolution. I have contacted Tmo and went through the entire ticket process without change. I notice it the most when I am unable to load emails in-app. Usually, when this is happens, I turn on wifi and immediately receive emails and notifications that were waiting to be delivered.
It appears the connection is going dead, and it requires a request to connect(Data off, Data on) to reconnect. Best part(or worst) is I can see the top of the T-mobile(they confirmed it) tower from my front yard.
I have similar issue but pertaining to wifi and 4G LTE my download speeds have not reached greater than 5mbs but my upload speeds go to 6mbs on my wifi tried restarting going in and out of airplane mode searching for new network connection and still nothing faster than 5mbs
Any thoughts?

So far I found installing a new rom onto the phone helped a lot. But still not perfect or very fast, even got my note 3 back out and it runs faster. I've replyed to a message from samsung so we can wait and see what happens but what really gets me is that if I use speedtest, it works at 10mbps no problem. Open chrome and goto google and it just sits and sits and sits annnnd times out.

constantly looses internet connection only Aeroplan mode helps!!!

This is drives me nuts!!! Connection status showed as H+ and very often suddenly internet dissapears!!! And it's not going to work again before I switch all phone to Aeroplan mode and back!!!
Today I thow my phone at a wall Hoping to break it to have a reason to buy a new one without this problem.
Anyone else?
What mobile provider do you have, and does it happen in more than one location so it's not just an unstable transmitter in your neighborhood?

Yes it happens when Im at home, probably with not so strong signal. What seems to be the the bug is that signal status in systembar shows that all is well with connection. But internet is absent. I use two sim, and it happens at all combinations of slots
Probably a solution to this will be a script that periodically check some online url and switch Aeroplan mode on/off if internet is absent.

Meaning what exactly? Just having the H+ symbol, or showing a bar or 2, does not mean much. I often will get a bar or reception showing on this phone when in remote locations, where there is no usable data signal. My wife's iPhone is the same way, shows that there is a phone and data signal, but no actual internet connection. The signal is present enough for the phone to see it, but not strong enough for any data to get through.
Go to phone Settings>About phone>Status>SIM status>Signal strength; and see what the actual dBM signal strength reads. This is much more reliable than any of the signal status indicators.
Thank you. Buut problem is that Android don't recognize that internet is lost before I switch to Aeroplan mode and back. I can wait for internet forever but as soon as I switched it connects immediately....
Really hate this piece if **** of a device!!!!!!!!
Do you still get this running on LineageOS 16? Can't say I've experienced this, running LOS and with keep mobile connection enable while on wifi-setting enabled in advanced development options menu.
Unless it's specific to your operator/mobile network. Have you checked your APN settings? Try deleting them and re-create from scratch.

Aggressive WiFi to cellular handover

Does anyone else experience their pixel 5 deciding that a perfectly good wifi connection is "low quality" and using cellular instead?
I have this happen very often. Have at least 50% of the wifi symbol full on my fast home network (that nothing else struggles on) and my pixel 5 just labels it as "low quality" and switches to cellular. I normally just have to go to airplane mode and turn wifi on. Toggling wifi (without airplane mode) will get it to reconnect but it'll quickly do it again on occasion.
I remember in the past there was a setting for aggressive WiFi to cellular handover but that's gone now. Not sure if that would solve this anyway.
What are your actual wifi stats? Just because the icon shows 50% doesn't mean you actually have a good signal.

count your blessings. in my experiences, android tends to hang onto bad wifi connections for faaaarrrrrrr too long. i'll be a half mile from the house before it finally switches over.

I wish that was the case for me. Mine will pick a single bar of LTE over my near full wifi signal. I've never had another phone do something like that. I basically have to use my phone with airplane mode on at home.
Unlock the developer settings and turn on verbose wifi. It should give you better wifi signal and band information to work with.

Question Wifi <-> Mobile switching?

I have this strange issue that has been with me almost since the beginning. I haven't been able to trace when it happens, but it now seems almost 100% of the time.
I only have WiFi in the house (wifi6, if it matters). If I go out, I only have 4G (I left only 4G and disabled 5G). I have no data until I put the phone into airplane mode and back, or I disable and re-enable mobile data.
Same thing when I go back in the house: no data until I disable and re-enable WiFi.
I've disabled the option for 'always-on mobile data' or similar, it's quite a battery drain if there's no cell signal.
Seems like a very strange bug, I don't have this with any of my other phones.
So you have both WiFi and 4G enabled and they don't switch seamlessly?
Exactly. I always have to restart each one of them, usually by toggling airplane mode. Was wondering if anyone else ran into this issue.
Ok this really is strange. There are 2(!) different toggles to enable data switching between WiFi and 4G, but for me it works flawlessly without them! As soon as I get out of my home WiFi range, 4G kicks in, and when I get in range again, the phone connects to my WiFi...
Hi, i have this problem too but it's not always.
I have a wifi 6 router too.
I also have problems switching from wifi to 4g. Need to toggle airplane mode on/off. 5g deactivated. No wifi 6 here.
I always assumed my vpn is causing problems during the switch to 4g. But hearing others have the same problem i would assume its zenfone problem.
I never had any issues in this area with my ZF8. With the option to have cellular always on I could walk out of my WiFi zone during a video call and no drop or short pause would appear.
With this off the network need a few second to work, and some apps need to be refreshed/restarted to gain connection. Never needed to toggle connection for this to work.
Maybe a reset would be enough or check for updates.
Ah, exactly! It does not necesarily need a network restart, but some apps just lose connection for a while, which can be from a few seconds to >1h. Which is even more weird as the icons are showing full connectivity. I would go out of the house, do stuff, come back later and I would only get the notifications when I'm back inside the house.
Rarely I had the connection drop completely (no signal) when switching, but I haven't noticed this happening since the last update.
