I rooted my phone with Motofail and then installed the OTA update to 2.3.6. And no, I don't have a Voodoo Rootkeeper backup because I simply forgot to do that. Dumb I know.
The superuser app is still in the app drawer, but cannot grant permissions. Is there any way I can reroot, or do I have to SBF and start over from scratch?
Thank you.

As long as you are still on GB (.215 or .219) the motofail exploit will work.
Thanks so much.
Rerooted and immediately did Voodoo backup for when ICS comes along.

Okay guys my friend updated and he still has super-user, but it does not work.
I ran superoneclick newest version, it said it was rooted. I rebooted manually and his phone was stuck at the Droid anamation screen,
I finally figured out our to factory restore Power+x, then at the ! Trianlge with phone; hit power up and camera.
I restored it, rebooted and he still has super-user. So i tested it with root check and titanium back-up, did not work. I unroot with superoneclick and it does nothing.
So I came here and started reading I found out that 1.7 is needed to root. My question is will it still root even though super-user is already installed, but not working?
Verizon Droid A855
2.2.3
Buildnumber is : frk76
Baseband is c_01.43.01p
Thanks for any help.
No one has done this or has knowledge?

I have had the same problem. Even superuser was denied superuser permission. Go figure. I am eager to hear if anyone knows how to get back to root.

Have you tried superoneclick 1.7 rageinthecage exploit? I read it will root the firmware. What I have not read is people who had root lost it and re-rooted. I know someone here has to know, this I would think It would be a common issue with the og droids.
For some reason I can't find anything on it.

A while back I had a update and when I updated it removed my root, but I still had superuser. I did a system restore and rerooted fine. Recently the Milestone X got a gingerbread update and I wasn't updating because I was hearing that a lot of people were having problems with their rooting and wireless tether afterwards. A couple nights ago I accidentally hit the update button and now system restore doesn't bring it back to the original OS. Looking into this currently. I will post again if I find a way to get this working.
There is a simple, one-click re-root app from the market that lets you quickly re-root after the OTA update. Of course, you have to be rooted first.
Before doing your OTA, download the free app "ota rootkeeper" from the market. Run this BEFORE the OTA, and it'll stash away a copy of all your root stuff. Then, after the OTA, go back to the app, and with one click, re-rooted! Lots of phones it won't work on, but it DOES work on the Droid 3!
Worked perfectly for me, re-rooting after the OTA. Neall
Just wanted to confirm for other users that if you updated to frk76 firmware. On 2.2..3 and were rooted. Supeoneclick. 1.7 will. Re root even if superuser is showing up.
Download 1.7 superoneclick
Run rageagaintsthecage exploit.
If it locks up, turn usb debugging off then back on. ( ie have the window open). I had to do it.
Re boot and good to go.

Hey all!
I have a 4.0.4 Atrix HD that I have rooted with OTA Rootkeeper and am ultimately looking to install safestrap and Joker ROM on to. To do this, I need to update to JB but need to retain root. I have read every step by step of the process I can find and they all vary slightly so I am looking for the most updated version of this step by step. Some of them have mentioned copying su over to system from data. Some have said simply update SU and the bin. Others have said to unroot using OTA Rootkeeper before updating SU.
This is the most detailed thread yet however at the top, he mentions only needing to update SU and its bin. Is that in addition to copying over APK to system from data?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995207
So what I understand thus far is this:
1. Root
2. Update SuperUser through Play Store
3. Update SU bin through SuperUser app
4. Install OTA Rootkeeper, root, unroot, reroot through OTA RK
5. Install OTA JB from ATT
6. Reroot through OTA Rootkeeper
7. Done!
Is this correct and the most up-to-date process? Are there any steps I am missing? I just want to make sure to get this right as we are locked out of root on JB.
Thanks!
Your correct. Just make sure su and voodoo are up to date

Did it and it worked great! Thanks for the help
You're right. And once you regain root from OTA RK. I recommend installing superSU as your root app.

Didn't Work
I tried this and it didn't work. When I download root checker some actually say that I have root access when other say the complete opposite. Any ideas on what's happening?
I had to root and un root a couple of times in it's rootkeeper before it stuck. Installed Safestrap which requires root so I know it worked.

I am on rooted stock ics, when I get the update after I try to install is says installation failed. Do I have to unroot my bionic to install update or unistall safestrap?
Nope.....have to FXZ ICS .. root.. then voodoo to keep root . then update....if you choose just to FXZ then upgrade you will have to do the linux root process. but not as easy as using motofail in ICS....easy as 1.2.3
I was having the same issue. Uninstalled SS and still no go. Was frustrated to say the least. Thanks for the info.

If su is still there (/system/bin/su or /system/xbin/su), all you need is SuperSU, which you can install from the Play store. (Without an "su-ish" app, apps can't get root, even though su is installed.) If su isn't still there you'll have to root again.

No, if SuperSU is still there and you don't get root, the su binry is evidently missing. That mans that you have to root all over again. (You need to be rooted to install the su binary, which you aren't, so ... which is why rooting uses an exploit [a different one in each line of phones] to get temporary root so it can install su to get permanent root.)

i have tried with odin but it keeps failing should i use the kingo root insted ?
at this stage what would be the best way to re-root
thanks in advance
Are you following these instructions? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715
Everyone else seems to report that this method for getting root works.
Kingo root works (though some people don't like Kingo)
Also - always freeze OTA update app after you root, otherwise you'll lose root with every OTA update.
If you're expecting an OTA update, you can unfreeze the app, then use SuperSU survival mode, then let it update, and then turn off survival mode to get root back. But ofc it's too late for that now in your case.

Kingo is fine. The Heimdall and Odin one is a pain in the but and risky. Mostly for restoring. I used kingo and its just fine. If you mess up then you can go to that other link and restore with or without root.

your right odin is a pain sometimes. kingo just worked first time boom one shot done
and i want to thank all the developers for there hard work and time for any program that allows us to do things we love to do with our phones
So I was having issue with my note 3 ( bluetooth issues ) I upgraded to 4.4.2
AT&T sent me a new / refurb phone and it has 4.3 on it.
So Im curious on what you guys would do?
Upgrade to 4.4.2 and stick with all this stupid bloatware
or
Root, and rom it?
If that latter, does anyone have any links to do that ( I used to do it with my S2, S3 and S4 )
thank s
Root it. It's not worth the grief to upgrade it to 4.4.2.
You can root it and use safestrap to install custom ROMs, or just enjoy the stock setup with root.
Sent from my locked down Note 3 via the tapatalk app
ROOT AND ROM it!
I was ROOTED and ROM'd, but I got bit by the OTA Upgrade bug... I went through all the hassle of downgrading, unrooting, resetting, then upgrading.
Now I've got the fresh new bloated OTA official 4.4.2 and NO ROOT.
Should I use Kingo? is that still safe for the Note 3 on 4.3?
well I rooted it with Kingo, However I'm having issues with SafeStrap.
Downloaded the APK and Busybox.
Installed SafeStrap and installed the recovery. When I manually reboot or reboot into the recovery via the app, it just boot as normal
Root it!
I rooted with Kingo, no problems, the first day I got the Note 3 and took the Nb4 update. I was so lucky to catch the KK update and froze it mid-download with ttb. I am so glad!! I wouldn't be able to use this thing without root. I have installed safestrap and roms without issue. (staying on 4.3 roms mind you)

try uninstalling ss then install it again, make sure it is 3.71 not 3.72. 3.71 doesnt need busybox if im not mistaken.

I am going to use Kingo tomorrow as well I think. How does get root? Will it have superuser on it after it roots or do you have to put it on the phone yourself?
Thanks.

Did you try rebooting into recovery via a power menu? That is what the tutorial says it should do. Hold power to bring up the menu and it should then have an option to reboot into recovery. I am going to try safestrap too I think.
