when i go to veiw a picture(meaning im looking at the picture) it wont rotate. bkmo said the problem was the stericson lockscreen. because when he put back the stock lockscreen it rotated again. so i think the solution there. but since the viewing isnt that big of a deal to me, plus i love the stericson lockscreen, im gonna keep my lockscreen so this is more for people wondering about the same problem...
google apps and themes:
if you flash a theme that modifies the google apps, flashing 4.1.999(and up) wont restore the stock app. clearly its cause he doesnt have the copies of the apps in there anymore. how do you restore? im not sure. i flashed a theme that themed my market red and black, then flashed his rom, then another theme, but the market stayed the same. im guessing that flashing the htc recovery, then the rom, will probably restore the google apps to stock, but im not sure if it requires a wipe.
does it?
because if it does ill just keep the themed market. its not really a problem, im just a little annoyed since im not sure if this has any negative effects. can anyone help on this? i dont wanna try because if i need to wipe, i dont have time to set everything up again. and i dont want to find out i did need to wipe and end up with having to wipe anyway. plus someone told me its possible to lose root somehow, and i only have 1 phone. otherwise i'd try this out myself for you guys. please someone try, or give some professional input on this. thanks!
Yes. I finally rooted my phone.
After 6 months of use.
Anyway, I used the "Super-One-Click" method to root. Got SuperUser permission and all that. Which, apparently, signifies that I have root access now. amirite?
k
Now. I downloaded a rom/theme I want applied to my phone. Called "Minimal Magic."
It's like sleek and simplistic. Black and white. Which is what I want for the Launcher that I'm using. (Launcher7)
So after a little research on my own.
I know that I need:
-a version of CyanogenMod.
-to back up current ROM stuff.
-reboot in recovery? to flash the rom.
Rooting wasn't hard and I didn't feel like I would brick it or lose any data/files.
But seeing the process of flashing a rom AFTER rooting. Idk. It's making me a little iffy.
From my understanding. It's going to "wipe" the entire rom that I'm currently running on my Fascinate. [2.1-update]
And flash this CyanogenMod rom? (Was thinking about getting CM6)
So when it flashes and assuming everything goes well, it's gonna be like a factory reset, but with a different rom, which I can apply the .apk I downloaded earlier of Minimal Magic for CM. But my launcher or settings won't be loaded, so I'd have to go back in and re-add everything? Update all the settings again and get everything back to normal, just with a different theme.
Maybe someone can walk me through this?
You need a rom that has the theme chooser (cm7) which minimal magic os compatible with. I'm running the theme right now. Yes you have to wipe, factory reset & all & yes you need a recovery to do this. When I first rooted I used the free app from the market called rom manager & I flashed the recovery that rom manager has which is clockword. I used this to backup my current stock rooted rom then I flashed the first new rom I used then after wiping. True enough you're responsible for what happens to your phone but I can say as long as you don't do anything really weird or stupid you should be fine...now I still use that recovery & I'm running aospcmod on my hero cdma sooooo roms, the process & blah blah could be different for your phone ....I hope this helps some

So, contacts, sms, photo ID's. Stuff like that will be gone?
I wish I didn't have to re-apply all my settings.
Also, I saw a video of a guy flashing a new rom. All of his apps were gone, since..obviously it was like a factory reset. That means I'ma have to install allll the apps I downloaded before, again? D:

Yes, but you can use apps like Titanium Backup (its not free, but the best there is), to backup all your apps and restore them later.
It also backs up sms, etc. but it is not guaranteed that it can be restored on a totally different rom.
btw: Use edit for a more descriptive title please something with your device and maybe CM7 and minimal magic.
Hello, I'm using Semaphore + CM10 JB for few weeks (installed with your support).
However I have a problem. The stability. My phone likes to resets byself, even few times per day. It happens irregularly. What's interesting, sometimes phone resets to the CWM. Sometimes resets and backs to work, sometimes totally offs the phone (and i need to pull out the battery) or freeze on cyanogenmod start screen (but not on normal start, only when resets)
Sometimes it happens when i'm using the phone, sometimes not. He likes to do that when i'm sleeping (for example, goes to the CWM and discharge the battery by whole night on full bright).
And much smaller, but maybe important issue: when the phone starts, shows the message Warning! A problem was detected with your device. Your device IMEI number is invalid. And invalid IMEI number could cause network issues including the inability to call emergency numbers.
Firstly I installed CM10, i had the problems with the network, but after @xsenman's help (reinstall with older ROM before flashing CM10) everything works correctly and i can see IMEI too. I made an EFS backup in that old ROM, should i use that? This message doesn't intrude me, but i'm just thinking if this could be connected with reseting problems. My SGS works really nice, but that one issue is really annoying.
100 views and really no one can help?
Come on, i feel so lonely
I'd recommend flashing a clean GB stock, restoring your IMEI, flashing CM9 twice and then flashing CM10 ROMs (if you want them lol). Always be sure that you wipe your phone after installs.

thanks for your answer. However, maybe it's not a ROM problem? Maybe some application makes an issue. Is there any log where i can check that?
That IMEI stuff definitely isn't app-caused. I can only repeat my statement above. Don't worry about data, you can backup everything using Titanium Backup and SMS Backup+.
Btw: What ROM are you on?
Best regards

True, IMEI not, but it's not a real issue for me. Actually, i'm absolutely satisfied of my i9000 (maybe flashlight absence, but it's hardware). Everything works fine, but reseting problem makes me nervous when I use the phone as car dvr or for endomondo ect.
I use Cyanogenmod 10, one of october's nightly versions.
So basically you don't want to change anything but you want us to help you? Sorry, that's not the way a community works.
You didn't understand me. My problem is phone reseting. I want to find the reason of the issue. Because without it, i can install new software and still have the same problem.

Since when has this problem occurred? I doubt an app makes a phone reset itself.
Edit: I looked around your post history and you seem to have posted in the semaphore thread. Maybe something is wrong with the kernel?

Thanks for your answer. It's hard to say because I've flash a ROM and out of hand I installed the applications. It's the worst type of problems, because it doesn't happen instantly or regularly. Actually since i wrote the topic, i didn't see the problem, however i saw two-three times the attention about IMEI, so i think, the phone resets, but not seen.
/// amerkiller: you are using i9000 too, could you recommend me any other ROM? Probably I will need to install a ROM and wait, two-three days and check if the ROM makes any issues.
/// maybe, but how can i check it? It looks like work nice, my question in Semaphore's thread was about the features
I use Remics-JB, you can try it out if you want a Samsung touchwiz feel, and apps from the S3.
Slimbean if you want a minimalist ROM.
Hopefully, the problem will disappear.

Edit: regarding the kernel, you can flash Devil and see if the problem persists.

So I will try Devil + Slimbean, thank you

Ok, so i want to reflash my i9000. So - i have JVU's gingerbread ROM, is that correct stock ROM? Should i make the WIPE here? I'm not sure about restoring IMEI. Should i do that in GB's temporary ROM or (as I think) later in JB's? Of course, earlier I need to backup the efs folder with IMEI so i think i should do that in GB's and restore it in CM10 (or in Slimbean which I want to test). And one more doubt. You said flashing CM9 twice. Why is that? And how can I do that if i'm installing the ROM in CWM?

You can find tutorials about flashing to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
Flashing the stock ROM will recover your IMEI number if you currently don't have it and will wipe your personal files. Backup your IMEI while you're on GB and if you lose it, then restore it. Fyi I never lost my IMEI, it's not common. You should flash JB / cm10 twice, ICS/cm9 should be okay after one flash. Remember to wipe if the instructions say so.
When you'll attempt to flash cm10 in recovery, you'll get a warning about partition change. You'll have to chose to flash second time, this time it should work and the phone will reboot into a bootloop. Pull out the battery and enter recovery and flash cm10 again. This time it well install and reboot successfully.

It's everything working nicely? Asking out of curiosity.

Hi, thanks for your interest
Two days ago I made a re-flash Stock > CWM > CM9 (twice) > CM10
Attention about IMEI doesn't longer appear
I've installed apps. The phone has resets for a one time when I was using some app. It is not a big problem for me if SGS makes that from time to time (maybe some apps are not adapted to the JB very well). However today I used him to record my drive (dailyroads voyager) and when i tried to stop the recording, he doesn't backs to life (just I needed to pull the battery out) and video file was corrupted. But when I was getting back to home it worked correctly. I have no idea why that's happen.

Restarts shouldn't happen that was some unusual circumstance. The video problem is weird, post here if it happens again, lets hope its just bad luck.
Ok, I'll look on it.
I have one other question and maybe you will know.
Call recording. There are two options for use this feature. Simple MIC recording apps and 'two-way call recording' which is much better, however it needs kernel with handle of it. I didn't find anyone for SGS, so I want to use MIC recording. There are many apps in Google Play. However any of them makes 0kB files of record on JB's CM10. When I was using gingerbread it didn't worked too however files were good, but the second side of call didn't hear me.

In regards to two way recording, i don't think it's solved...

I never needed that feature, so i won't be much help, try different apps and remember some apps are on XDA, not only the play store.

I saw that, but it is only for Froyo, when i installed it into gingerbread i needed to re-flash my SGS
I tried a lot of apps, however it looks like being locked (if worked they made 0kB files)
Hi guys, I am knew and have started to browse this forum in an attempt to optimise my stock I9000.
I am overwhelmed by all the possible stuff that you can do.. to the point where I have no idea where to begin. I made this to ask for a bit of direction!
This is what I`m using as my 'map'.. but no damn clue where to begin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
So... where the hell should I start???
(ex. start backing up data?.. flashing ROMS or finding the ROM of my fone just incase i need to back flash... a couple of example replies just incase you miss understood me)
you should first set your goal what you want to achieve.
Do you want to boost up your current stock ROM, or do you want complete new experience? Do you care about the data in your current ROM or are you ok with full wipe?

I cannot give you a simple answer...
I want to make my ROM as good as possible... i.e. as much features as possible but without sacrificing stability whilst increasing speed.
I care about the data (by that i mean, contacts, pictures, stuff in my calender and docs) but i`m guessing i could save them else were and do a full wipe... but then again, what exactly would i be wiping if i did?
when you're doing full wipe you are losing all apps and their settings and all system settings. You don't lose your contacts and calendar entries - as long as you have them synced with your google aaccount. You also do not lose anything saved on you SD card (both internal and external) - pics, docs, music and stuff...
If I were you, I'd go for Cyanogenmod 10 stable (or perhaps latest nightly), or if you're bit of adventurer, you can try Cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly. Installation guide and download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778526

CyanogenMod is an entity where some developers develop Rom for andriod platform where as Odin in android community is better known as a software to install ROM, firmware, Rooted Kernel and so on. It will be easy for others to help if you can provide more information about your device and what you want to achieve such as root and update your ROM. Some one may be able to guide you to right direction. Stick posts have lots of useful information already.
Are you OK with rooting your phone?
For starters, You could go to Settings>about phone and see the version of your android OS.

You definitely need to check CM10 or CM10.1 at some stage when you get a bit more familiar with rooting flashing download and recovery modes etc. No way you will be back to any stock roms.

Hi all,
I wanted to give cyanogenmod a go as I really liked the security guard idea so I used the HTC sync manager to backup my contacts and messages and set about getting cyanogen installed.
All went to plan (pretty much) until I tried to retrieve my contacts etc. I didn't realize the Sync Manager was dependant on Sense which obviously isn't there anymore so the phone won't sync with the software.
What can I do?
I think I can revert to stock if I can find an image and then retrieve the contacts, is there then another way to back everything up?
I hope you can help because my phone's looking very empty and sorry for itself
Thanks
Sync your contacts with google and back up your messages with an app from the play store. I use SMS Backup and Restore.
Thanks, do I need to 'de-root' my phone or can I install a stock image? Would I get this image from HTC?
I went into bootloader and clockworkmod to try and restore the original rom from there, does cyanogen not make a backup of the previous rom?
No ROM makes a backup before it Flashs that is up to you to do yourself. You will have to flash a stock based ROM.
Thanks for the reply. I did a bit of reading before installing and CM seemed like a quick and easy option to get the job done and try an alternative ROM. I even said over on their forum that I had backed up using the Sync Manager and no one thought to mention that I wouldn't be able to restore any data. No one said make sure you take an image yourself because CM won't do it for you.
And to top it all off I'm not that happy with CM, the battery life is atrocious.
Ah regrets!
